Making preserve out of rose petals is a very old tradition in many cultures – whether in India, in the Middle East, as well as Europe. However, not all recipes and preserves will have a balancing effect. In India, Rose Preserve is very popular and is called: Gulkand. It is readily available everywhere. But it is usually made with white sugar – we know that the consumption of white sugar depletes our bodies of minerals and lowers our pH, so you want to avoid that. Also, many recipes do not use Rosa Centifolia. Other varities of rose have different properties, so you want to be careful when you are purchasing a rose preserve that it was actually made with Rosa Centifolia.
In addition, many times, the recipes use vinegar, or citric acid, as well as synthetic scent or aroma, or color, to enhance the look and flavor. These are all carcinogenic ingredients you want to steer clear of.
Sometimes preserves sitting on shelves get oxidized or fermented if the formula is not balanced enough. You should watch out.
Vaidya Mishra carefully formulated his SVA Rose Petal Preserve according to his ancient ayurvedic precepts. He used natural ascorbic acid balances the sugar molecules. In addition, he used pectine which micro-encapsulates the sugar molecules, so that they do not rush into your blood stream and give you a sugar high. Pectine also modulates the sugar molecules to give sustained release into the body. He added natural essence of Rose Absolute, for enhanced rose properties in addition to organic rose bud petals. Fall in love once more, with and through Vaidya’s SVA preserve jars of pure rose bliss! For a blissful start of your day, you can add some Rose Presrve to your breakfast, but DO NOT ADD to your milk, as the ascorbic acid in this recipe will curdle your milk and cause indigestion. Here’s another delicious recipe from Vaidya for a day-time snack, specially in hot summers, prep time: 3 minutes:
Mix:
4 tsp raisins – any kind you like
4 tsp dry toasted pine-nuts
2 tsp Rose Petal Preserve
Mix all the ingredients together and carry with you in a jar. You can snack on this throughout the day for a sustaining bliss-inducing quick pick-me-up!
This recipe is Pitta and Vata Pacifying. It can also pacify Kapha dosha – add ½ tsp fresh ground Black pepper.
You can keep any unused portions and consume for 3-4 days.

We had our final live-streamed session on April 30: we covered specific formulations for SVA Marma Therapy and delved into additional related topics. It was a fabulous final live session, and we were all sad to conclude this portion of the course. In Ayurvedic terms, how can Collagen and Beta-carotene support the health and beauty of healthy skin? The skin is the result of many complex transformations and metabolic operations. Vaidya Mishra explained that sometimes, in some people, the physical materials, the physical proteins and other molecules to be transformed into the body’s molecular ‘bricks’ are in short supply.
Collagen, Keratin and Elasten
Two of these ‘bricks’ are keratin and collagen. There are three key ‘beauty’ proteins in the body, collagen, elastin and keratin. Collagen is a type of protein, and works with keratin to provide the skin strength, smoothness, elasticity and resilience. It is produced by the skin and other parts of the body. When you are young, you have an abundance of collagen in your body, which is why young children have such lovely shiny hair and smooth skin. It is referred to be the “cement” which holds everything together. As we age, our body’s production of collagen and other structural proteins starts to slow down, our skin starts to lose its elasticity and, sadly, we start to notice sagging skin, wrinkles, and lines forming around the eyes and mouth. 
Furthermore, with time, reactive oxygen molecules, associated with many aspects of aging, lead to increased production of the enzyme collagenase, which breaks down collagen. It’s been found that certain diseases are related to either collagen deficiencies or the lack of its synthesis by the body. Such diseases most commonly arise from a combination of either genetic defects, poor intake of collagen-rich foods, nutritional deficiencies, or digestive problems affecting the production (synthesis) of collagen.  
The key detail is that collagen is only found in animals and there is no plant source for collagen. It is the main structural protein in the extracellular space in the various connective tissues in animal bodies (including humans). As the main component of connective tissue, it is the most abundant protein in mammals. Collagen tissues may be rigid (bone), compliant (tendon), or have a gradient from rigid to compliant (cartilage).
Keratin is one of a family of fibrous structural proteins that occurs naturally in hair, nails and skin. Keratin is the protein that protects epithelial cells from damage or stress. It is the key structural material making up the outer layer of human skin. Depending on amino acid levels, it can be hard (as it is in nails) or soft (as it is in skin). No matter what form it’s in, keratin is designed for protection. In our skin, the outer layer (the epidermis) is made up of a layer of dead keratin cells, pushed to the surface by new keratin cells growing underneath. This outer layer provides waterproofing functions as well as strength and elasticity. The loss of strength and elasticity in older skin is due to losing keratin over the years. When the top level of keratin is compromised, the sensitive inner layers are exposed to damage through heat, chemicals, or friction. When skin keratin is damaged, it results in skin looking flaky and dry. Typically, the healthiest skin has the thickest layer of dead keratin protecting the cells underneath.
Keratinization is the process by which keratin hardens. Without the mesh-like outer layer formed by keratinization, the skin would easily break, resulting in frequent infection by foreign invaders like bacteria. Keratin hardens as keratinocytes, found in epithelial cells, produce more and more keratin. Keratin forms a tight mesh, making it impenetrable unless damaged. As these keratinized cells age on the skin, the body sloughs off the dead or damaged cells. 
Collagen facial creams have been around for decades. But do any of them really work? Not really, because the collagen does not get absorbed, since collagen is quite a large molecule, and it does not penetrate the skin but stays idly on top of it, and gets washed off. Same applies to keratin. Certain creams containing keratin do seem to fair a little better in terms of results but many do not, especially those keratin products made with excessive heat which damages the proteins, changes the properties, and making them useless. The point here is the same as with supplementation. Once it is determined that there is a deficiency, we try to supplement things externally, because the body is not producing enough on its own. But most of the time the oral or transdermal supplementation is neither absorbed nor utilized by the body. So how can we support this? 
All the power of transformation to make collagen and use keratin is supported through the presence of wild harvested Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola) in high quantities in Vaidya’s Lalita creams. Vaidya called this herb a ‘maha twaga’ rasayana – a great or the very best rasayana for the skin.  
Modern science agrees: 
• The centella asiatica (gotu kola) extract asiaticoside is well-known to promote skin connective tissue repair and wound healing. 
• In a study assessing the exact biology of this action of asiaticoside on skin and connective tissue repair, it was found that asiaticoside affected the expression of 54 genes related to connective tissue function!
• Specifically, asiaticoside upregulated the expression of genes related to fibroblast “cell proliferation, cell-cycle progression and synthesis of the extracellular matrix”.
• This, in simple terms, means that collagen cells mature and multiply faster and produce more collagen and other connective tissue proteins.
• In another study it was found that asiaticoside boosted the secretion of collagen type I (the hard collagen that gives firmness to skin and connective tissue) and collagen type III (the softer, “baby collagen”, which is produced before collagen type I and helps with connective tissue repair and regeneration).

Beta-Carotene
Beta-carotene is the one other ingredient also key for beautiful skin. Looking at beta-carotene we find that it is effective in conditions like dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. Vitamin A, being a powerful antioxidant, is involved in the growth and repair of body tissues and hence, protects the skin against damage. When applied externally, it helps in treating ulcers, impetigo, boils, carbuncles and open ulcers, and removes age spots. It also speeds up the healing of skin lesions, cuts and wounds. Beta-carotene helps premature skin ageing by acting as an antioxidant, a substance that reduces oxygen damage caused by UV light, pollutions and other environmental hazards like smoking. Adequate intake and transformation of beta carotene imparts luster, making the skin more attractive and beautiful. Last, but not least, beta-carotene can even help reduce sun sensitivity.   
Please note: as already mentioned, collagen is found only in animals. There are no plant sources of collagen. We use animal collagen sourced exclusively from organically-raised chickens. The beta-carotene is derived from organic carrots.

The human physiology is a work of wonder, a complex system that runs 24/7 on so many levels in such a complex manner. With Ayurveda, we can learn to keep it optimally balanced so it can support us to combat stress and emotional distress. Ayurveda offers us such in-depth knowledge not just of our bodies, but of plants, flowers, spices, herbs. Perhaps your grandmother used to make her special rose preserve, but now, having read up on the incredible health benefits of rose, you understand the value of consuming rose petals for balance purposes. SVA News & Insights: Copper Cup Water?
with Dr Teitelbaum
Note: We get this question so frequently at the Prana Center – “what did Vaidya say about copper cup water? Why is it not good to drink? How come almost all ayurvedic practitioners recommend it?” Here is a beautiful case history from Dr Teitelbaum on the topic.
Case History: Copper Overload
In ancient Ayurvedic times it was recommended to leave water in a copper vessel overnight and drink it in the morning. My teacher, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, advised against it in this modern era due to the fact that most ground water is now acidic (from the acid rain) and the acids in the water react with the copper to make copper sulfate, a potent toxin.
In addition, there is a widespread deficiency of zinc amongst the population which leads to an excess of copper in the blood.
And excess estrogen found in birth control pills can lead to an enhanced absorption of copper.
High copper levels can make you extremely nervous as it can cause too much epinephrine (speed) to be made from dopamine, a neurotransmitter made by your body.
Several years ago I spent a year working with a peri-menopausal woman who was eating lots of tofu to keep up her estrogen levels. She subsequently became extremely nervous, to the point where she could barely function. Her copper levels were through the roof.
I gave her our zinc bhasma (Ayurvedically prepared zinc), as zinc can bind the excess copper and remove it. I had her stop eating the tofu, and gradually watched her nervous system return to normal as the copper levels slowly but surely came down. I learned a lot from this case. I always remembered how the women who are on the birth control pills exhibited a trembling in their hand as I would take their pulse. I saw this on numerous occasions and knew there must be something in the pill which caused their nervousness and shakiness.
I had read that the pill lowers the B vitamins, which can make you nervous, but I also found out that the high levels of copper they were absorbing (from the estrogen in the pills) was stimulating their nervous system, in much the same way as copper is used to conduct electricity, it can also increase nerve conductivity.
I give this case history as yet another warning to all young girls on the birth control pill who are beginning to feel nervous and they don’t know why.
As if you need another reason to stop taking this very dangerous drug as it destroys your friendly bacteria in the gut, paving the way for food allergies and digestive upset, causes lots of breast cancer, upsets liver function leading to autoimmune diseases.
And it is famously known for thickening the blood, causing dangerous blood clots and strokes. This would NOT be something you want to be taking with the Covid virus running rampant in our society, which is also known to thicken the blood causing blood clots.
If you are taking the pill I would ask your doctor if it would be a good idea to switch over to other birth control methods which aren’t hormonal in nature, such as various barrier methods.
I have learned a lot seeing patients over the last 35 years. I want to share these clinical gems with everyone so you can in turn learn how to prevent needless suffering for yourself, your family and your loved ones.

Covid Update with Dr T – Support Your Immunity with Mom’s Ghee- your SV Ayurveda Newsletter June 11, 2020 – #22, Vol 10

Update on Covid-19

We are not out of the woods yet, but almost. Recent research coming from Italy and Germany is suggesting that the Covid pathogen may create thickening of the blood caused by the body’s own immune response – it triggers a “cytokine storm” resulting in inflammation which may cause blood clots in the lungs and other sites around the body.
In response, medical experts are opting for anti-coagulants to help prevent this, along with the use of anti-inflammatories to prevent the cytokine storm. All this, possibly, in addition to antibiotics.
Always follow your doctor’s advice if you find yourself in this situation or suspect you may have contracted the virus.
Otherwise, I would like to go over some ayurvedic tips that can help with thickening of the blood, and that might help reduce your chances of developing blood clots should you contract the virus.
First, and most important: cook with olive oil and ghee. The body is able to metabolize and receive nourishment from both, unlike refined vegetable and seed oils, such as canola, sunflower, and soy oils, margarine and artificial fats. When you heat these refined oils for cooking, they harden up and form a compound that is one molecule away from plastic! They thicken your blood and clog your arteries and cause inflammation.
2) Avoid unfermented soy such as tofu, edamame and soy milk as they contain hemagluttinins (they thicken your blood) which predisposes you to blood clotting.
3) Avoid red meats, hard aged cheeses and nutbutters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc) they are heavy to digest and thicken the blood as well.
4) Avoid protein powders such as pea protein and others – again, they are heavy and thicken the blood.
Instead: 
* take zinc bhasma – Ayurvedically prepared to enhance its absorption, as it prevents a cytokine storm;
* expose your skin to the sun as the Vitamin D created can boost your immunity to all viruse;
*Guduchi Satwa can modulate your immune system, which means that it supports your immune system to fight the infection without over-reacting causing a heightened response and subsequent cytokine storm.
*Always eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Lately I’ve been drinking an apple pineapple smoothie (pictured here) as pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme which can not only keep your blood thin but can prevent a cytokine storm as well.
Apples contain pectin which promote bile flow. Our bile clears fats out of our blood, keeping it nice and thinned out.
Here’s the recipe: make 2 cups of fresh pressed apple cider and put in a blender with 1 1/2 cups of cubed pineapple chunks. Blend for two minutes. Drink immediately.
Be careful as you go back out into the world and stay healthy!

Does EMF Disrupt Sleep? Spring Detox Update – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter June 4, 2020 – #21, Vol 10

Many of us remember dancing to the tune of “The Age of Aquarius” in 1969 and we are now probably wondering wehether it was a premature move? Whether perhaps the Age of Aquarius wasn’t what it was made out to be; perhaps its arrival was miscalculated; perhaps – and we want to believe – that it is yet to come… Cosmic time-scale is after all hard to conceive off. What counts as the fraction of a second in cosmic terms could easily amount to 100 years in human terms… Either way, until we have more concrete signs of a utopian aquarian society made real, we have to deal with “The Age of Zoom”! And lots – LOTS - of EMF exposure. Even for those of us decrying the harmful effects of overexposure of the human body and mind to electromagnetic devices now have no choice but to resort to longer and more involved usage of electronic devices, as they have come to replace our in-operson social interactions and activities prior to Covid. We have very less choice not to do so nowadays. But perhaps revisiting the impact of EMF on our bodies will remind us to reduce and minimize and try to reach out for the printed book instead, or make the effort to stretch more on our yoga mat, and storing away our electronic pads and going for less screentime. 
Because, as we know all too well, the electro-magnetic field suppresses the activity of the pineal gland and reduce melatonin production. EMF also affects our serotonin levels, the circadian rhythm our bodies run on, as well as the endocrine system. Electromagnetic waves from electrical appliances also trigger serotonin and melatonin in the brain and body (positive ions increase serotonin levels in the body the same way Prozac does); melatonin is an important neuro-hormone in the body. In the pineal gland, serotonin converts into melatonin by enzymatic interaction. Serotonin and melatonin regulate the circadian rhythm. Melatonin also regulates the function of all organs of endocrine system. Improper functioning of hormones exposes us to the risk of depression, mood swings, anxiety, sleep disturbances, brain tumors, and other neu- rological illness (Ref:Antidepressant facts: The Serotonergic system, the Pineal gland & side effects of serotonin acting anti depressants). 
So you see, it’s not just about a little longer, a few more minutes… It actually becomes a vicious cycle as your body’s bio-chemical balance gets thrown off and you find yourself spiraling down a black hole! Even the most up-beat irrepressible optimist will find herself in a brooding grey mood.
You know what you need to do. You know where you need to cut screen-time. You know how and where you can cut exposure to EMF. Do it.
Need inspiration? Here are some helpful tips Vaidya Mishra shared with us:
  1. Turn off your wifi in the evenings and reduce/eliminate exposure to EMF ideally after 6pm-7pm. 
  2. Make sure to eat food that’s full of prana or life-force and soma – nothing acidic or with preservatives and synthetic flavors etc.
  3. Go for a walk outside under the moonlight, hug a tree, lie down on soil or sand – initiate contact with prana in nature to support your body’s restoration of natural prana, your best protection against EMF.
  4. Wear raw silk shawl, shirt, head scarf during electronic device usage. Raw silk is a poor/bad conductor and helps protect against EMF. 
  5. Keep your sleep and awakening time set, and go to bed by 9:30 pm latest. Even if you don’t feel sleep, go to your bedroom and lie in bed anticipating sleep. Lower/turn off the light in your bedroom; have good ventilation/fresh air flow in your bedroom; and wear cotton – nothing synthetic – to bed. All these will help support you to fall asleep faster and deeply. If you are still having a hard time falling asleep, try one of Vaidya Mishra’s Soma Nidra formulations. They are all amazing, but some prefer the tea, while others swear by the roll-on. They will help pacify your heart and mind, and settle the nervouse system, so you get restorative nightly sleep, night after night, and are ready to face this brave new world every morning with renewed shakti!

SPRING 2020 DIY HOME-DETOX UPDATE
We concluded our Spring Detox on a high note with bright detoxers sharing their post-detox experiences and their delight at the delicious SVA recipes Vaidya designed for detox and rejuvenation. We promised ourselves and eachother to maintain healthy daily diet and activity routines, and hoped to re-unite online sooner rather than later. BE ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR MANY MORE SVA COMMUNITY COURSES VERY SOOOOOOOON!
We had our final live-streamed session on April 30: we covered specific formulations for SVA Marma Therapy and delved into additional related topics. It was a fabulous final live session, and we were all sad to conclude this portion of the course. We all look forward to when we will be able to get together for our practicum weekend and practice our newly acquired skills. Until then, we will be staying in touch via our virtual classroom and communicating via messenger.

SPRING 2020 DIY HOME-DETOX UPDATE
In our third session, we covered the second type of toxin that can also result from mental and emotional stress in addition to an imbalanced diet. We also learnt and practiced the Samadhi Marma Protocol to help address mental and emotional stress. Then we shared our detox experiences. We had a 4 hour long session animated with a lively Q&A, sharing tips, knowledge, anecdotes, and more! Next week we continue with the 3rd type of toxin as taught in the SVA tradition – garavisha….
