It is time… time to put down all that is driving us helter-skelter, take a deep breathe, and remember that “to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: […] A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes 3:4).

NOW is the time to dance, to surround ourselves with loving family and friends, to “come out of the circle of time, and into the circle of love” (Rumi).

NOW is the time to celebrate each other, in togetherness, in gratitude for the bountiful offerings of Mother Earth – today and everyday; and the abounding joy that surrounds us unconditionally – may we always chose to find it.

And may we open our hearts – in gratitude – to all that is and will be, reminding ourselves that all that is, is perfect – just as it is.

We are deeply humbled and grateful for the opportunity to share Vaidya Mishra’s timeless teachings and herbal formulations of

6 Tastes for Balanced Health

According to the basic principles of ayurvedic pharmacology – known as dravyaguna – the natural taste of a food item is very important because it gives you information about what it is going to do in your body, what actions it is going to perform once you ingest it. This is why, in Ayurveda, plants and herbs are first and foremost categorized and evaluated according to their taste. In total, Ayurveda says there are 6 tastes: madhur (sweet); amla (sour); lavan (salty); katu (pungent); tikt (bitter); kashai (astringent).

The first three tastes are known to be vata pacifying (the sutra says: “Tatradia marutam granthi” – the first 3 tastes pacify marut/vata or the air principle). The astringent and pungent tastes pacify Kapha, and the astringent, bitter, and sweet tastes pacify pitta. Cooking a perfectly balanced meal is all about the play and proper combination of these 6 tastes. As Vaidya always said, it is all about “samyog and samskar” – what items you combine with eachother and how.

If you’ve spent some time in the kitchen trying to assemble a dish, you will note that it is not possible to have all 6 tastes all the time in one dish! Or even in a couple of dishes. This is where and why, in Ayurveda, we get chutneys, and accompanying side dishes, sauces, or raw condiments, to help bring in the missing tastes and complete the balancing properties.

It is in this spirit that Vaidya Mishra made these fruit preserves and chutneys. Another important attribute they also carry is making sure that the digestive fire remains sharp and support digestion and assimilation. Read more about each preserve below and choose your favorite. The Sweet Orange and Mango chutney contains a balance of both the sweet (madhur) and sour (amla) tastes, therefore, it pacifies all vata aspects right away – body and mind. But does this not aggravate kapha dosha – since only the bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes pacify kapha while the sweet, sour, and salty aggravate it?

Vaidya’s chutney is made of raw sweet mangos that are known to be astringent, and in this recipe, the astringent taste or “kashai rasa” counter-balances the sweet and sour properties of the chutney keeping kapha in balance.

This chutney is also pitta pacifying as the sutra says: “kashai tikt madhura, pitta manyecho kurvate”- astringent, bitter and sweet tastes all pacify pitta. The chutney contains the astringent (kashai) and the sweet (madhura) tastes that pacify pitta.

So, in a way, we can say that this chutney is almost tridoshic when kapha individuals consume it with enough spices and in moderation!

But beyond doshas, this fruit spread is very balanced because it not only contains premium ingredients but these ingredients have been meticulously put together to bind each other out, so for example, the natural pectin binds the micromolecules of the raw organic sugar so the sugar does not go into the system in a fast-forward fashion but rather at a sustained-release pace, so when you consume it you do not get a sugar high and come back for more after you’ve crashed from your high. With the sustained release of sugar, you satisfy your craving and walk away happy with a small amount! The sugar is also balanced by the ascorbic acid and all the other ingredients.

Prunes have a storied history and a big reputation as ‘nature’s remedy’ for constipation. And no wonder! Prunes are rich in insoluble fiber, as well as the natural laxative sorbitol.

But that’s not the end of the story. Prunes are a great addition to any diet, as they have a long list of other health benefits with the least or zero side-effects. Despite not being part of the Ayurvedic tradition, we should fully adopt them into our daily diet.

Dietary Fiber and Pre-biotics

This tri-doshic (balanced for all body types) prune preserve helps normalize apana agni.  This agni (metabolic fire) governing the colon must be sama (balanced) to do its job of selecting what materials to absorb and what materials to reject in the process of digestion.

Garcinia indica also known as Garcinia cambogia (“vrikshamla” in Sanskrit) is mentioned in the ayurvedic “nighantu”-s (or glossaries) as a vata and kapha dosha pacifying dravya or food ingredient. It is known to enhance absorption due to its thermogenic potency; to sharpen the taste buds, clearing away ama or toxic build-up in the oral cavity; and to make the body lighter because it carries the following 3 rasa-s or tastes: amla (sour), katu (pungent) and kashai (astringent). These 3 rasa-s enhance metabolism in general. More specifically, the amla rasa or sour taste also enhances and supports protein metabolism because it enhances agni in the mamsa dhatu or muscle tissue. In addition, the 3 rasa-s together help clear and unclog the channels too. Garcinia’s first property is “amla” or sour, and we know that the sour taste is “agneya” or thermogenic. Due to this property, it pacifies kapha in all the 7 “dhatu”-s or tissues. But it also pacifies thirst because it pacifies vata in the stomach, samana vata, as well as in the chest or udana vata. In general, it is a wonderful fruit that balances the entire stomach and all the dosha-s in the stomach, enhancing coordination amongst them all: samana vata, pachak pitta, and kledak kapha – the 3 principles which support digestion: a) movement of space and air in the stomach; b) enzymatic levels; c) lubrication levels. When the stomach dosha-s are balanced, so many aspects of overall health also follow suit.

While we may need calcium to nourish our bones and teeth, to help our blood clot, to nourish our nerves so they can send messages, and to help our muscles contract, we definitely don’t want it to accumulate in our bodily tissues. 

And since calcium molecules travel through the bloodstream and are carried by every cell, they could potentially cause calcification in almost any part of the body. And it is this depositing of calcium that is responsible for forming gall stones, kidney stones, arthritic joints and for creating hardening of the arteries. 

This is where kulthi lentils come to the rescue. These lentils, also known as Horse Gram, grow on the hard rocky soil in the Himalayan Mountains and not only are they as hard as rocks, they contain the intelligence to break down calcified formations in our bodies. 

The Charak Samhita, the definitive sourcebook of Ayurveda says that the prabhava or ultimate effect of Kulthi is ashmarinashan. Ashmari means ‘stone’ and nashan means ‘to vanquish.’ When calcium macromolecules in the body start accumulating to form a stone, these molecules of Kulthi behave like an enemy and pulverize them. Gall stones and kidney stones are called ashmari. The ultimate effect or prabhava of Kulthi is therefore known to be ashmarinashan — destroying the enemy, destroying the stones — or any other type of calcification that acts in a hostile manner.

Let’s take a deeper Ayurvedic look at the process of calcification. My teacher and mentor Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, whose family lineage was known as Shaka Vansya Ayurveda, or SVA, spent 7 years after graduating from Ayurvedic college studying with his father, also a gifted Ayurvedic doctor. By doing so, his father could impart to him all the clinical experience he had gained in his very busy and successful Ayurvedic practice. One such clinical gem he learned was that the process of calcification occurs due to imbalances in the sandhi or gap occurring in the dhatu agni of the bone tissue, known as the asthi-agni. 

Let me explain this a little further — in the body we have 7 tissues, known as dhatus: blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and reproductive fluids. Each of these tissues gets nourished once food leaves the digestive tract. The food spends 3-5 days in each of the 7 tissues before moving onto the next one. But each tissue actually transforms into the next tissue by way of the digestive fire which occurs in the gap in between the two tissues. So it is in this gap where all of the transformation occurs. And this gap contains a digestive fire, known as the dhatu agni, which creates the transformation from the previous tissue into the next one.

The name of the bone tissue is “asthi.” Therefore the asthi-agni is responsible for all the transformation that occurs within the bone tissue. This agni can be either too low, too high or variable (sometimes low, sometimes high) and when any of these 3 states happen the absorption and transformation of calcium gets compromised, and the calcium goes unused, which starts the calcification process.

The agni in the bone tissue get compromised if you eat synthetic fats (think Canola oil), or too much fat which your body can’t process, causing you to make ama, or toxic buildup in your fat tissue. Toxins from the fat get deposited in the fat tissue. Since the fat tissue constitutes the raw materials for the bone tissue, if it is impaired and not functioning well, then the bone tissue, the next on down the line, will also get impaired. The toxic buildup from the fat tissue gets transmitted to the bone tissue and either puts out or imbalances the dhatu agni of the bone tissue.

You must also not ingest unintelligent calcium from a bad source, such as from eggshells and bone meal, for example, which makes the situation even worse. If your asthi agni is already impaired and you are also ingesting bad calcium that is getting deposited into your bone tissue, you are supporting further calcification problems. 

To add to all this, garvisha, or xenobiotics from pesticides, industrial pollutants, house-cleaning products, preservatives in the diet, and heavy metals, as well as ama visha (food which only partially digested and fermented into an acidic toxin in the digestive tract) can fuse with the unused calcium in your body and form virulent toxic crystals. 

These garvisha or exogenous toxins are a hot and piercing type of toxin and can quickly reach the deepest tissues, including asthi dhatu or the bone tissue. 

These toxic crystals which form from the dumb calcium or lack of proper agni or proper transformation in the bone tissue bind together and result in even more dangerous crystals. 

They sometimes can get deposited in the physical bone or they can float in the bone tissue creating osteopenia or osteoporosis by hindering the proper formation of bones. This toxic brew of ama visha and garvisha combining with calcium can also wind up in our feet as gout, or in our fingers as hard, painful bumpy arthritis nodules or hardening of our arteries and glands.

Vaidya Mishra taught me to recommend that people age 40 and above consume Kulthi lentils twice a week to disintegrate any possible toxic micro crystals floating in their body. 

The Kulthi lentils grow in rocky areas and have the intelligence to break down the calcified crystals of ama visha and gar visha. 

This happens for two reasons: first the lentils can disintegrate and help pull out the unused calcium if someone has been taking dumb calcium. Or, is someone is eating good calcium but has an imbalance in asthi agni, Kulthi can help to correct that imbalance. Even if you are eating good calcium-rich foods you must still have good asthi agni to transform that calcium. Kulthi lentils increases the agni of the bone tissue and disintegrates the calcium deposited there. In this way Kulthi nourishes the bones, breaking existing calcifications and hinders new formations from forming. 

In my practice we teach our patients how to cook with Kulthi lentils, and since they are so great at breaking up toxins we make sure we teach them how to bind the micro toxins so they can be taken out of the body safely and effectively. If the dose is too heavy or you eat them too often the Kulthi can break the stones too quickly and sometimes the disintegrated stones might have sharp edges, which can damage the physical circulatory channels as they pass through and out of the body. Fortunately we are so careful in instructing the patients how to limit the use of the Kulthi lentils to not more than twice a week and at the same time to use the binders to bind the calcium macromolecules to direct them out into the bowel movement.

By using these amazing stone breakers, or Kulthi lentils, I have successfully shown our patients how to break down their kidney stones, gall stones and to even reverse hardening of the arteries.

It is best to contact your SVA practitioner who has training in the use of these powerful lentils so you can eat them in the correct way. Since they are so powerful it’s best to cook 50% Kulthi with 50% mung or masoor lentils along with spices. Combining Kulthi with other lentils is a samyog or intelligent combination that minimizes the potential to overheat the bone tissue, or the asthi dhatu.

It is recommended to use only 2 Tbs of Kulthi per person and to mix it with vegetables, soups, broths, or on rice and other grains. Consume it only twice a week to be on the safe side.

This is yet another powerful tool taught to me by Vaidya Mishra, to help people prevent the negative side effects which come from taking unintelligent calcium, combined with eating an unhealthy diet. Now you know you have some help if you have been diagnosed with kidney stones, gall stones, hardening of the arteries, gout or arthritis. But again, it’s best if you contact an SVA practitioner to make sure you know the best way to treat these conditions so you can be monitored as you gently and effectively take out these dangerous toxins.

Ignite Your Inner Light

During the Darkest Nights of November

It’s that challenging time of the year again when the days become short and dark. The sweet memories of balmy summer nights fade away as the colorful leaves dry up and disappear from the trees. In the past, I used to dread this dark and damp transition time of the year. Thanks to the help of the wisdom of Ayurveda, I have learned to ignite my inner light on most days during the late Autumn and Winter season. Ayurveda focuses on daily routines called dinacharya (and seasonal routines called ritucharya to help prevent health issues –physical, mental, and emotional imbalances. In addition to Ayurveda, I also incorporate my three-year experience of living in Norway to add to the positive aspects of winter living called hygge – a nurturing way to create an experience of being ‘cozy’ something that Scandinavians have uniquely created as an artful way of living in long winter climates that was developed over many generations.

I moved back to the Chicago area almost three years ago shortly before the pandemic hit our world after living on the West Coast over ten years. Spoiled by the mild winters there, I was not looking forward to the intense winters here. I have had to work at creating a different reality by changing my mindset and creatively applying Ayurveda and Norwegian mojo. Here’s how to ignite your inner light:

Being connected and a feeling of belonging is a necessary requirement for both physical and mental health and scientific research shows that isolation is as dangerous to our health as being a smoker and having a poor lifestyle. My mindset meant for me was to use different words that I normally associate with winter – instead of dread and lonely, I use words such as cozy, nourishing, rejuvenating, restful, connective, and contemplative. The winter mindset, much like my Norwegian friends is a positive and fun time, it’s a time where you try to socialize a little bit each day, either inviting people over, going out to a café, taking a class, or attending social activities. When I lived in Norway, everyone baked homemade bread every few days because they would count on having unexpected company. In Norway, no one called to make plans, they stopped by unannounced or you would always be warmly welcomed if you stopped by someone’s home. The older generation held knitting circles – women sitting together, knitting wool sox, hats, and sweaters so that by the holiday time, they had enough to give for gifts. What will you plan to do to socialize during this cold season?

Fire Element – On the day the clocks turn back, is always the most challenging week, so this year I have invited a few friends over to gather and eat together and light lots of candles to create additional warmth. Lighting candles throughout the day and evening is something my Norwegian family taught me. The light of the fire creates a cozy warmth. Last year, I purposely rented an apartment that has a fireplace, there’s something about fire that feels natural and nourishing. The fire element is balancing when the weather is cold and windy (kapha and vata increasing). The wisdom of Ayurveda tells us that opposites balance, and the same increase, so the heat of fire balances the cold and wind. Though not everyone has the luxury to have a fireplace, lighting candles is just as helpful. For health reasons, I do not recommend candles that contain synthetic perfumes due to their toxicity, but instead use the all-natural beeswax or ghee candles.  

I discovered that using ghee candles or ghee lamps refined my experience by uplifting my mood in the winter. Ghee is a purified butter, a golden pure oil that has been used for thousands of years in ancient Vedic and spiritual ceremonies across India and Southeast Asia. You can either purchase a candle made from ghee or you can make your own ghee and purchase cotton wicks to be used in a brass, silver, or copper candle holder. The cotton wicks and brass candle holder made especially for ghee lamps can be purchased at an Indian store or online. If you are a highly sensitive person like I am, you will notice the subtle uplifting benefits of lighting a ghee lamp each morning and in the evening. The ghee light balances your agni, your life energy, and your digestive power. It also soothes the eyes and calms the mind. Fire, also called Agni represents the power and heat of the sun, so it’s a way to connect to the energy of the sun when the sun is farthest away from us. According to ancient Ayurveda ghee lamps purify the environment of stagnant negative energy and produce positive and protection in the environment. In addition, the benefits of ghee light:

  • attract sattvic vibrations
  • bring hope and light in life
  • invites health, wealth, and prosperity
  • contains nanoparticles that nourish the subtle body and channels

Dynamic Movement – Aligning with the Sun – Mentally, I am getting ready to focus on a different type of daily exercise. My daily walks along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan are not an option for me when it’s too cold, windy, rainy, or icy. However, on mild days, walking in the snow is uplifting. I love walking, so this year, I have invested in a treadmill on days when it’s too cold to walk outside. However, for some, joining a gym would be a more social option. Or, do you love music? Moving, dancing, and stretching to music is a great way to move in the winter, as well as outdoor sports such as snow shoeing, skiing, and ice skating. Yoga classes live or online is also a great way to keep in shape. The most beneficial exercise I do is the Sun Salutations also called Surya Namaskar. This ancient flow of movement connects one with the rays of the Sun, even if you do them inside. In the winter, when we are missing the sunlight, we can connect to the life-giving energy of the sun by doing this flow of positions. Ideally, 13 rounds of Surya Namaskar is recommended to ignite the 13 agnis of the body. I have found this practice to be expansive as well for deepened awareness and growth of consciousness, as I do them in the morning sunlight or cloudy weather either inside or outside with my attention on my body, breath, self, and the Sun. It’s a way to connect to the rhythms of nature and the ever-powerful healing energy of the Sun.

Waking up before dawn – Ancient Ayurveda prescribes waking up 90-minutes before dawn called Brahma Muhurta. When it’s dark out in the early morning, there’s a temptation to stay in a warm bed and sleep in – but don’t – it makes matter worse. According to Ayurveda, sleeping during kapha time 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. increase the cold, heavy, sticky energy in the body increasing kapha and thereby increasing a tendency toward depression and weight gain. However, it takes practice for the body to get into a routine. One must be willing to go to bed early before 10:00 pm in order to wake up early naturally as well as a lighter dinner early in the evening to help sleep better. The first thing I do is light a ghee lamp and listen to some uplifting Gandharva music to get me going in the wee hours of the morning. All I can say is try it, you will be amazed how good and how productive and healthy you become from this life changing lifestyle tool. 

Studying pure knowledge – the ancient vedic textbook called the Bhagavad Gita says, “even a little of this knowledge alleviates fear and suffering”. It’s a great time to study Ayurveda either as a self-paced program or with the guidance of experienced teachers and fellow students. There are many opportunities to study Ayurveda here at the Online Ayurveda Amritanam Learning Center, or directly with Chandi.com, and/or Ayurveda Living School. Studying Ayurveda is a great support during challenging times in world events as well as personal challenges. It creates a stable basis to learn all about the non- changing aspects of life and come to know the inner bliss that transcends all changing forms.

Evening Activities on long dark nights – it’s necessary to make the effort to plan things so you have something to look forward to. Either a get together with family or friends, a class either online or in person, a creative project or practicing an instrument and have a good book to dive in. For me, my challenge will be to not spend so much time on the computer watching Netflix or social media. 

Vitamin D – make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D due to the lack of sunshine, lack of Vitamin D can contribute to low energy and depression. I recommend a daily Transdermal Vitamin D roll from www.Chandika.com. Last but never least, one of my favorite things is eating heart warm stews when it’s cold out. The smell of spices, beans, and grains simmering on the stove pot is a nourishing way to share food with others. Here’s one of my favorite recipes:

Tridoshic Winter Dahl Recipe

(1 to 2 servings)

1/8 cup whole mung beans

4 ½ cups water

1 teaspoon soma salt

¼ cup chopped sweet potato

1 or 2 teaspoons of ghee or other vegetable oil

½ Thai green chili pepper (not for high pittas)

1 inch chopped fresh ginger

2-3 curry leaves or 1 bay leaf

½ teaspoon of ground turmeric

1 pinch of ground fenugreek

1 pinch of ajwain seed

½ teaspoon cumin seed

1 kale leaf chopped

Fresh ground pepper to taste

Fresh lime juice to taste

Chopped cilantro to garnish

If possible, soak mung beans the night before or a few hours before cooking. In my original recipe on the video, I did not soak, and it took longer to cook.

Sauté ginger and Thai chili for a few minutes, then add cumin and sauté for another minute. Add the mung beans and continue to sauté a few more minutes, add the bay leaf or curry leaves. Add water and salt, fenugreek and ajwain. Bring the mung bean, water, and salt to boil and then lower to medium heat where there is a soft boil. Add the sweet potato. After 30 minutes add the kale and parsley or other vegetables of choice. Continue to cook for an additional 15 or 30 minutes or until the mung beans are completely soft and mushy. Garnish with lime juice, black pepper, and cilantro. Pour over basmati rice or other grain.

I met Vaidya Mishra in 1995 when I was working for MAPI at a very elegant new Ayurveda Store in Bellevue Square Mall in Bellevue Washington. Vaidya came to the store periodically to train the staff on all of the products as well as give consultations. The first day we met, he took my pulse and said, “we both have the same problem, we are in the wrong culture”. That was the introduction to Vaidya, it was like meeting an old friend from the past and from there he became my teacher. His training in the store was in depth about his products and herbs and how they benefit the subdoshas, dhatus, ojas, or reduce ama as well as in depth his diet and nutrition protocols. I was able to sit in with him during consultations to take notes for the patients and learn how to recommend lifestyle, diet, and herbal formulations. In later years, I wrote MAPI newsletters and interviewed Vaidya for the articles on various topics, so it was a wonderful way to study his deep understanding of Ayurveda. I continued to learn from him over the years deepening my knowledge of Transdermal marma therapy and its applications to health and all the many in-depth courses he offered. When he toured in the midwest I was invited to cook for him in Wisconsin and on occasion in Fairfield which was always an honor to cook food for one’s Vaidya.

Why Is It So Good for You?!

So, if you’ve been listening to some of my videos, or have read my thyroid book or heard me speak in a podcast or a lecture, you know by now that we live in a world in which we’ve allowed over 80,000 chemicals into our environment, in the form of air pollution, skin care products, industrial chemicals, and even pharmaceuticals. We add chemicals into our highly processed foods and in our water supply as well. 

These type of chemical toxins are so hot in nature that they can quickly pierce through the 7 tissues and go directly into the bone marrow. In fact, every time we step outside and breathe in the air pollution it goes immediately into the bone marrow.

Every immunization or flu shot you get: the chemicals automatically go into the bone marrow.

Taking medicine for acne: yep, you guessed it: it lands in the bone marrow.

How about the nitrates in your breakfast bacon, or your corned beef sandwich at lunch, or the pepperoni on your pizza? There’s a reason there’s been a ton of research showing how they cause brain tumors and leukemia. Why? Because this is what happens when toxins go that deep into the bone marrow. The problem is this: if these chemicals build up enough they can trigger autoimmune diseases and cancer.t

And it’s bad enough that we have these toxins invading us from outside the body. We also make ama visha, another hot reactive piercing toxin, whenever we don’t digest our food well. And this can wreak the same type of havoc as the gar visha, making a beeline through the various tissues: blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone and landing into the bone marrow.

As depressing as all this may sound, what if I told you there is an antidote to these dangerous chemicals? What if I told you there is actually a food that can also move very fast, like an arrow, in the body, piercing through the blood, muscle, fat, bone and bone marrow, only this one comes to the rescue — cleaning it instead of polluting it more.  

In the Bhava Prakash, a 16th century textbook of Ayurveda, this food is called shigru, which means, “it moves like an arrow” in the body as it rapidly penetrates the tissues where it has a deep detoxifying capability.

So what is this incredible food? And where do we get it? And how can we cook it?

Well, it is known as drumstick! I know when I tell people that name their mind automatically conjures up pictures of a big hearty turkey or chicken drumstick. But this vegetable is actually the long hanging pod of the moringa tree.

The Moringa tree is known as “The Miracle Tree” for good reason. Several parts of the tree are eaten and it has so many vitamins, minerals and amino acids that it is considered one of the most nutritious plants in the world. Moringa leaves contain 24 times more iron than spinach, 16 times more calcium than milk, 9 times the Vitamin A of carrots, many times the potassium of bananas and every essential amino acid your body needs.

And Moringa contains 46, yes 46! powerful antioxidants which can neutralize free radicals before they damage your cells and cause disease.

Most of the time we eat the leaves and the pod – the drumstick – of the moringa tree. Both are detoxifying, cleaning all the tissues leading up to and including the bone marrow. This means that just one bowl of drumstick soup can clean the blood plasma, the blood, the muscle, fat, bone and bone marrow (the first six dhatus, as they are called in Ayurveda).

Because of its effects on cleaning the liver and the blood, it can prevent high cholesterol. In fact studies have shown that it works as well as simvastatin in decreasing cholesterol and triglycerides and it also prevents a buildup of plaque in the arteries. It prevents tumor formation, it can lower blood sugar and sugar in the urine, it can prevent and dissolve kidney stones. It is anti fungal and effective against athlete’s foot. It’s even famous for detoxifying the eyes. And because they enhance fat metabolism they are very good for cellulite, and are able to heal the type of headaches we get from too many toxins sitting in the blood. The list of health benefits go on and on.

Another amazing fact about drumstick is that it is both nourishing and detoxifying at the same time. There are two phases to our lives: sometimes we want to break down the tissues and detoxify, and then other times we want to build up the tissues after the period of detox is done. But this unique vegetable has the capability to do both at the same time, which is highly unusual.

I have a drumstick here — this is what it looks like — it’s about 10-16 inches long, and like our bones, it is somewhat hard on the outside, but the inside is soft and squishy — kind of like our bone marrow, where its health benefits are most pronounced.

Most Indian markets carry drumstick frozen, but if you’re lucky enough like I am to be able to get it fresh, it has even more health benefits.

They can increase heat or pitta in the body and may aggravate Vata since they have a drying capability, so it is not recommended that you eat them more than twice a week, just to be on the safe side.

And here are the moringa leaves. The leaves of the Moringa tree have even more detoxifying capability, so be careful with them as well. In fact, you should avoid both Moringa leaves and drumstick if you are pregnant as it may cause a miscarriage. If you are breastfeeding, you should also avoid Moringa, because of its detoxifying nature. Plus, it will make your milk very bitter and unpalatable for your infant. And even though it is fully packed with nutrients it is at the same time highly detoxifying and is best not to give to babies. Infancy is a time for nurturing and babies should only be fed soma-genic nurturing food such as squashes, oatmeal, rice, etc. We recommend to start introducing a normal adult diet at the age of 5 years and above.

Here is a recipe for Drumstick Soup from my dear friend, Divya Alter, from her cookbook,

“What to Eat For How You Feel: The New Ayurvedic Kitchen (Rizzoli, 2017). 

In a pot, put 9 two-inch pieces of drumstick, cover it with 4 cups of spring water, and add 3 peeled and chopped taro root, 1/2 tsp each of ghee, turmeric, cumin, coriander and fennel, 6 curry leaves, salt and pepper. Let simmer for about 20-30 minutes, mashing the drumsticks and taro root towards the end of the cooking. Strain into a bowl and serve with fresh squeezed lime.

This recipe will make enough for two people. And even though it is used for detox, it is extremely delicious at the same time. 

And you can cook the fresh moringa leaves in the same way you cook spinach — just take the leaves off the hard stem, rinse them several times, and then incorporate them into soups, stews, dahl and kitcheri.

Both the leaves and the drumstick pods should be cooked and not eaten raw or drank as a juice. Cook the drumstick with cumin and curry leaves to decrease their inherent bitterness. 

If you don’t have an Indian market near you, it is quite easy nowadays to get dried moringa leaves to be used in soup or made into a tea, so you can still receive the health benefits of this amazing tree.

Eating moringa leaves or the pod are a must in our highly toxic world to prevent serious disease from occurring. I’m sure you’ll feel a surge of strength after eating this miracle food.

Have you heard of Moringa? Also known as Moringa oleifera? Moringa is a fast-growing drought-resistant tree native to the Indian subcontinent. In India, it is also known as drumstick tree. In Sanskrit, it is called “shigru.” Its leaves and fruit – drumstick – are edible, but the Moringa tree is key for our health, specially during seasonal detox. Even modern science now confirms that Moringa can help: 

  • Regulate Blood Sugar Levels
  • Enhance Digestive Health
  • Purify/detoxify blood
  • Boost immunity
  • Facilitate stronger bone development …
  • Help prevent Respiratory Diseases
  • Boost female sexual health

But that’s not all! Moringa carries: 

  • 7 times more Vit C than an orange
  • 3 times more potassium than a banana
  • 3 times the amount of iron found in almonds
  • 25 times more iron than in spinach
  • 4 times more calcium than in milk
  • 2 times more protein than in milk

This is why Vaidya Mishra dubbed Moringa “a divine plant.” You can understand why they are divine gifts of Mother Nature – they carry a perfect combination of balancing and rejuvenative properties. Not only do the ancient ayurvedic texts recommend Moringa, but the scientific community keeps publishing papers that attest to the incredible nutritional, therapeutic and prophylactic properties of this ancient divine plant. 

Moringa thrives where other plants and ingredients fail. Although the plant’s many parts are used – leaves, flowers, seeds, fruit and even bark – in the Vedic tradition, the leaves and the fruit are particularly favored in cooking, for daily nourishment and detoxification, alone or with some lentils (mung or masoor preferably). SVA recommends using it daily for nourishment and detoxification because it is very effective in ridding the bone tissue of accumulated toxic waste. Since it targets the bone tissue, it is then also good for the blood and fat tissue – toxins travel through the blood, the muscle and then the fat before reaching the bone as one is built on the other. As a side-benefit, moringa also supports the detoxification of the liver.

There are also additional benefits to consuming Moringa on a regular basis:
  • It is great for eyes, skin – it detoxifies the skin and nourishes the eyes
  • It can help lower cholesterol since it supports the liver and purifies the fat tissue
  •  It can help with joint pain resulting from the local accumulation of toxins because its primary action is to detoxify tissues, particularly the fat tissue
  • Long-term use supports our immune system. 

It is tridoshic – balancing for vata, pitta, and kapha – however, if you are a high pitta body type, make sure to always cook it with a pitta pacifying masala. Alternately, you can use the SVA Moringa Soup Mix which has been formulated to be balancing for all three doshas.

In western cuisines, we associate spices with asian/indian curries, or the pungent taste. We have also forgotten how to cook with spices. Spice should be a staple of our daily meals because when used in specific ratios and with a good healthy fatty medium, our body makes “ojas” out of the food we eat – when it’s cooked with the right spices. Ojas is a fascinating ayurvedic topic: ojas is not just what keeps us alive but also healthy. Dr Teitelbaum explains the relationship between ojas and fertility below.

Infertility & Digestion:

What’s the Connection? 

When I was young, nearly everyone on our block had 4, 5, 6 or more children. Infertility was quite rare, happening only occasionally. Fast forward to the 21st century when approximately 1 in 7 couples are affected by infertility in the United States. That’s about 6.7 million people each year who have trouble conceiving.

To examine why people are having such a hard time conceiving a child, we must consider several factors. And we also want to try to trace all the underlying causes. We do know that hormones play a role, but in Ayurveda we like to look at all the factors which affect infertility — thinking that it’s just a problem with hormones is too superficial a way to look at it.

So to understand this issue at a much deeper level, we must first understand what Ojas is. Ojas is the neurotransmitters and hormones and gives us great strength and stamina, as well as immunity to disease. And, it gives us fertility.

Since Ojas is responsible for reproduction, it’s important that we understand how it is made. And as the ancient Ayurvedic doctors stated, we should always look first at digestion when tracing back the origins of any disease process.

Once you swallow the food, it goes through the digestive tract and it must be broken down into smaller and smaller particles so that it can next be absorbed into the bloodstream. But if either something is wrong with your digestion and/or the food is too heavy, then residues of the food can remain stuck in the gut, forming ama, which clogs the intestinal channel. Then, as a result, there is less food being absorbed into the blood stream. 

Once the food absorbs into the bloodstream, it must spend 3-5 days in each of the 7 tissues before moving onto the next. The 7 tissues are blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and finally the reproductive fluids. Then at the end of the 7th tissue Ojas is made, which is the final end product of digestion.

So, if someone is experiencing infertility, the first thing you must examine is how well their digestion is working. Unfortunately, in this day and age, most people have compromised digestion from taking too many antibiotics, birth control pills, acid reflux medicines, steroids and immunizations, all of which destroy our digestive capability by destroying the friendly bacteria in the gut and compromising the liver from too many toxins traveling through it. Keep in mind that the gut flora and the liver are considered the seat of digestion.

So the first step is to fix the gut and the liver. And any other weak processes of digestion, such as the gall bladder, enzyme systems, and so on.

Then of course your diet must be as healthy as can be, with fresh home-made foods cooked every day and eaten that day, which gives you the most nutritional value from the food and the most prana, or vibrational value that the food can have.

It’s important to know that with every food we eat, it takes a whole month before it can make Ojas, since all the foods spend 3-5 days in each of the 7 tissues before moving onto the next tissue. The only exception to that rule is: milk! This means then that milk is the #1 most nourishing food to ensure fertility. But you must drink good quality milk (whole milk from grass fed cows, preferably non-homogenized with the cream at the top), taken in the correct way (boiled and taken either on an empty stomach or cooked into grains).

Unfortunately so many people can no longer digest milk because of their compromised digestive systems. So in these cases we must first fix their digestion so they can go back to having milk again.

The other problem we encounter is that milk has been so maligned here in the Western world — people call it a poison and say it’s responsible for causing cancer and auto-immune diseases, which has caused so many people to turn towards plant-based milk instead.

This is a big mistake! Milk is definitely not a poison if you have good quality milk taken in the correct way and you can digest it properly.

And keep in mind that the hormones which make you fertile are made of cholesterol. Therefore whole milk and ghee are the absolute two best foods for fertility.

But when you’re under stress, working too many hours, and rushing through the day, you can burn that cholesterol, since all the stress hormones are made from cholesterol. And you can also burn up the Ojas, leaving you feel depleted and fatigued. And infertile.

And this is precisely why when I was young all the women were so fertile. Most of the women back then didn’t go out to work but instead stayed at home. But then in the 1970’s when women entered the work force they quickly became infertile as they burned up their Ojas as they tried their best to both work and still perform all the other chores necessary to run the household. I distinctly remember fertility clinics opening up right around that time, which were pretty much nonexistent before that.

Over-exercise can also deplete Ojas, so while it’s good to exercise your body you don’t want to overdo it by working out for too many hours a week. Periodically take a day off to give yourself a little break here and there in between the work outs. And if you’re already thin to begin with, please don’t jog — it can aggravate Vata even more, draining even more of your strength and stamina. If you’re a thin and stressed out Vata type who might be a little weak or malnourished it’s best to walk or do yoga, but not strenuous aerobic exercise. Pitta types, who are of a more medium build can tolerate a little more exercise than the Vata types, and the more stout Kapha types can do just about any type of exercise they want, as long as they don’t injure themselves. 

Once you correct all the reasons for the low Ojas, and you learn how to rest more, eat more nourishing foods, add whole milk (cow’s or goat’s preferably) and ghee to the diet, then you can also start considering ways to boost your hormones using all the wonderful herbs and herbal formulas Ayurveda has to offer to help you conceive. But if you just try to address hormone levels without doing the work involved to keep up your Ojas, you are setting yourself up for failure. That’s why taking synthetic hormones for fertility don’t always work either. 

The other thing to consider is that if you are having a difficult time conceiving it’s because your body is wise, knowing that your Ojas is low, that you need to fix your own strength and stamina before growing a new body inside your womb. So it’s important you address all these issues so that you can have the healthiest baby possible. I’ve seen some very sick women become infertile, they go to fertility clinics, are then pumped with extremely high doses of synthetic hormones; they conceive, but their offspring are unhealthy because no one thought of strengthening the mother and father before conceiving a new life. You want your genetic material and offspring to be as strong as possible. Therefore you must be as strong as possible before conceiving. 

Many women have miscarriages for no apparent reason. In most of these cases there is a subclinical hypothyroid problem, which means that the thyroid gland is weak, but it might not be weak enough to show up on blood work. Yet it is weak enough to cause a miscarriage. This is because when the thyroid gland is weak the progesterone goes low, which results in a miscarriage. In my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda I outline all the reasons someone might have a weak thyroid. In these cases, we fix all the reasons for the thyroid weakness, and then give them our herbs to keep their progesterone levels up throughout the entire pregnancy. This approach has been proven to be highly effective in preventing miscarriage. 

So there is much more which can be done to enhance your fertility outside of the realm of taking somewhat dangerous synthetic hormones filled with nasty side effects and toxicity. The answer lies in keeping up your levels of Ojas, by fixing your digestion and eating high quality nourishing foods and addressing the stressors you can control, such as going to bed early, incorporating whole milk and ghee into your diet and identifying any and all thyroid issues which might be lurking under the surface, even if your blood work comes back normal.

By following these guidelines you’ll be amazed at how much your fertility comes back. Ayurveda has hundreds of herbs, many of which can greatly enhance fertility. We even have herbs to strengthen the uterine lining so the egg can implant, herbs to increase the sperm count and motility and herbs to help the woman’s eggs develop fully.

It’s always best to conceive a child in the most natural way possible, so they can enter life with their own high levels of Ojas and not start out with chemical toxins which come from the mother’s use of the many synthetic hormones used for fertility. 

And don’t be shortsighted in your approach to treating fertility — don’t just think of it as a problem with low hormones which could leave you to believe that if you just take hormones you will be able to conceive. It’s a little more complicated than that, but it’s also not as hard to conceive as you might think.

Your body is fully capable of healing itself to the point where you can regain your fertility…you just have to nudge it in the right direction.

Navaratri just concluded on Wednesday October 5 – an annual autumn festival that celebrates the cosmic creative energy of Shakti. During Navaratri, Shakti is re-enlivened in women (and men), through the recitation of vedic verses, and offerings into a ritual fire. Vaidya Mishra’s ayurvedic teachings always encompassed Shakti in all her aspects – whether it was in his explanations of the cosmic guna-s, or the action of herbs, or the balancing of our human physiologies. My journey with Ayurveda started as a marma & ayurvedic spa therapist. After I personally experienced a severe burnout and debilitating heartburn, I realized how critical gut and digestive issues are to our overall health.

While I studied with Vaidya Rama K. Mishra and trained as a nutrition & wellness educator, I also worked on my own recovery. A graduate of the Ayurveda Nutrition and Culinary Training Foundation Program (ANACT) at Baghavat Life Culinary School in New York, I now share with my clients the transformative effects that a balanced diet and lifestyle can have.

My Practice

In the course of my personal healing and learning journey, I experienced first-hand the balancing power of S.V. Ayurveda over inflammatory conditions that most of us commonly suffer from. To this day, the wholesome recipes I continually develop based on S.V. Ayurveda guidelines are still supporting me and helping my clients as well.

Connecting with others and sharing what I’ve learned from my own experience has become a passion and it is the mission of my practice.

My practice offers client-centered services that go beyond the typical “herb-for-symptoms” approach. Navaratri translates into “9 nights.” It’s an ancient vedic ritual that occurs a few times in a year based on astrological calculations. Autumn Navaratri or Sharada Navaratri is considered the most auspicious. Auspicious in the sense that it brings renewal to our lives – on an energetic and physical level. Energetically, it is said that creative powers known as “shakti” are more readily available and present in the environment. Even though women are identified as “shakti,” this creative cosmic force is not limited to women’s physiology. A woman is an expression of shakti; but both men and women carry shakti energy in different degrees. In Autumn, that shakti energy is readily available for all to get recharged with. This is celebrated for 9 days and nights. It is a good time to turn inwards, even as Nature is getting ready to transition from the exuberance of Summer nights into shorter and colder Autumn days. It is also an ideal time to do a seasonal home detox, change our pace of work/rest, adjust our diet to changing temperatures, so that our physical bodies can transition and stay and grow strong. Ayurveda is the best tool that helps maintain our health so that we can continue on our journeys of exploring and attaining yogic samadhi or bliss.

About the artist

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE 

 ~ a SV ayurvedic perspective ~

If you doctor finds you have high blood pressure, you will probably be put on blood pressure medicine and/or diuretics to bring the blood pressure down. These are important life-saving medications for sure, but we always want to make sure to treat the root cause(s) of the high blood pressure so that maybe we won’t need to resort to the use of these medications.

There are several reasons for high blood pressure, so once you know the causative factors, try to avoid these pitfalls and then we do have numerous remedies to help bring the blood pressure down. Let’s look at this problem from a deeper perspective:

The Physical Channels 

First, it is important to understand the idea of the physical channels. The arteries are considered one type of channel, the various vessels that the blood flows through. If these channels shrink down, get clogged or inflamed then the blood pressure will go up, much like a garden hose if you step on it, the pressure will go up inside the hose.

Therefore, avoid the foods that shrink the channels: the nightshade vegetables, such as eggplant, bell peppers, tomatoes and white potatoes. They contain nicotine which shrinks all the body’s physical channels including these delicate blood vessels, causing the pressure to go up.

Avoid the channel-clogging foods for the same reason: chocolate, cacao, unfermented soy (tofu, soy milk, edamame), hard aged cheeses, nut butters (peanut butter, sunflower seed butter, almond butter, etc.), winter squashes, bananas, mushrooms and the heavy meats (red meat, pork, sausage, bacon, pepperoni, bacon, for example).

And finally avoid the foods which burn the channels, such as onions, garlic and vinegar. If you desire a sour taste put fresh squeezed lime on the food as it turns alkaline quickly once ingested.

  

Magnesium

I have a one-hour free class on my website (under the subheading “Online Classes.” )  If you listen to this in-depth explanation of magnesium, you will quickly see why even mainstream medicine uses magnesium in the hospitals and emergency rooms to lower blood pressure.

Basically, the arteries have muscles in one of their three layers to pump the blood through, and there is another layer containing elastin. This elastic layer is like a rubber band, which allows the artery to expand and contract as the blood is pumped through.

Magnesium resides in both layers, allowing the arterial muscles to both relax and then to expand as the heart beats. So we always want to keep our magnesium levels up. Stress, pharmaceuticals and other negative influences can deplete our bodies of magnesium, then the arteries lose their elasticity allowing the blood pressure to go up.

Magnesium sits on the outside of every cell, preventing calcium from entering. Calcium belongs in our teeth and bones, but not on the insides of our arteries. Once the magnesium goes low, calcium takes advantage and begins to accumulate on the inside of the arteries, creating hardening of the arteries, which is very easy to feel in one’s pulse. As one uses magnesium, the arteries soften up, causing more elasticity — this is very easy to feel in the pulse and very rewarding as you see your older patients develop the very soft arteries commonly seen in the younger patients.

Of course, we recommend the use of transdermal magnesium, either through creams, rolls-ons or oil massages since the skin will absorb what it needs. When taken orally it can sometimes go through the digestive tract too quickly preventing its absorption.

Bad Oil Clogs the Arteries… 

Most of us grew up on vegetable and other poor quality processed cooking oils: sunflower, safflower, canola, peanut oil, corn oil, margarine, and other processed fats. When you heat these oils they form a plastic molecule which clogs the arteries. Then calcium deposits on top of the plastic, forming plaque, which also raises the blood pressure as the arteries get hardened.  

We have several remedies which can scrape this plaque out of the walls of the arteries but you should be under the care of one of Vaidya Mishra’s trained SVA doctors as you clean it out. We have had several patients reverse their clogged arteries (as seen on a CT scan of the arteries called a “calcium score” using these tremendously effective therapies.

Stress….

We all know how stress can elevate the blood pressure: when we’re stressed our adrenal glands secrete cortisol which shrinks down the channels, allowing the blood pressure to go up. This is why we use Ashwagandha, which prevents the release of too much cortisol when we’re under stress. 

Cortisol also dumps magnesium out of the body, causing the blood pressure to go up as the arteries lose their elasticity and harden.

Salt…

The highly processed salts we use are mainly composed of sodium and chloride, which increases the blood pressure over a lifetime. 

Our Soma Salt contains many other minerals, besides sodium and chloride, which also aid in keeping your blood pressure low throughout your life.

Vata-Pitta-Kapha’s Impact on the Arteries

Learn about vata, pitta and kapha as these three doshas also play a role in keeping our blood pressure down. High vata shrinks the channels, high pitta allows the blood to pound against the walls of the arteries as the blood gets hotter and hotter, and high kappa, if left unchecked can clog the arteries also causing high blood pressure. 

There are numerous ways to treat these doshas, including herbs, diet, daily routine and cleansing — listen to my one-hour lecture on my website which gives a thorough explanation on what these terms mean and how to keep them balanced.

Obesity

Learn good eating habits to keep your weight down as high body weight can cause high blood pressure. Many of my patients’ blood pressure came down just by losing weight, without having to use even herbs.

By following these guidelines you should be able to keep your blood pressure down your entire life, without the use of blood pressure medicines.
