SVA News & Insights: Copper Cup Water?
with Dr Teitelbaum
Note: We get this question so frequently at the Prana Center – “what did Vaidya say about copper cup water? Why is it not good to drink? How come almost all ayurvedic practitioners recommend it?” Here is a beautiful case history from Dr Teitelbaum on the topic.
Case History: Copper Overload
In ancient Ayurvedic times it was recommended to leave water in a copper vessel overnight and drink it in the morning. My teacher, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, advised against it in this modern era due to the fact that most ground water is now acidic (from the acid rain) and the acids in the water react with the copper to make copper sulfate, a potent toxin.
In addition, there is a widespread deficiency of zinc amongst the population which leads to an excess of copper in the blood.
And excess estrogen found in birth control pills can lead to an enhanced absorption of copper.
High copper levels can make you extremely nervous as it can cause too much epinephrine (speed) to be made from dopamine, a neurotransmitter made by your body.
Several years ago I spent a year working with a peri-menopausal woman who was eating lots of tofu to keep up her estrogen levels. She subsequently became extremely nervous, to the point where she could barely function. Her copper levels were through the roof.
I gave her our zinc bhasma (Ayurvedically prepared zinc), as zinc can bind the excess copper and remove it. I had her stop eating the tofu, and gradually watched her nervous system return to normal as the copper levels slowly but surely came down. I learned a lot from this case. I always remembered how the women who are on the birth control pills exhibited a trembling in their hand as I would take their pulse. I saw this on numerous occasions and knew there must be something in the pill which caused their nervousness and shakiness.
I had read that the pill lowers the B vitamins, which can make you nervous, but I also found out that the high levels of copper they were absorbing (from the estrogen in the pills) was stimulating their nervous system, in much the same way as copper is used to conduct electricity, it can also increase nerve conductivity.
I give this case history as yet another warning to all young girls on the birth control pill who are beginning to feel nervous and they don’t know why.
As if you need another reason to stop taking this very dangerous drug as it destroys your friendly bacteria in the gut, paving the way for food allergies and digestive upset, causes lots of breast cancer, upsets liver function leading to autoimmune diseases.
And it is famously known for thickening the blood, causing dangerous blood clots and strokes. This would NOT be something you want to be taking with the Covid virus running rampant in our society, which is also known to thicken the blood causing blood clots.
If you are taking the pill I would ask your doctor if it would be a good idea to switch over to other birth control methods which aren’t hormonal in nature, such as various barrier methods.
I have learned a lot seeing patients over the last 35 years. I want to share these clinical gems with everyone so you can in turn learn how to prevent needless suffering for yourself, your family and your loved ones.

Update on Covid-19
with Dr Teitelbaum
We are not out of the woods yet, but almost. Recent research coming from Italy and Germany is suggesting that the Covid pathogen may create thickening of the blood caused by the body’s own immune response – it triggers a “cytokine storm” resulting in inflammation which may cause blood clots in the lungs and other sites around the body.
In response, medical experts are opting for anti-coagulants to help prevent this, along with the use of anti-inflammatories to prevent the cytokine storm. All this, possibly, in addition to antibiotics.
Always follow your doctor’s advice if you find yourself in this situation or suspect you may have contracted the virus.
Otherwise, I would like to go over some ayurvedic tips that can help with thickening of the blood, and that might help reduce your chances of developing blood clots should you contract the virus.
First, and most important: cook with olive oil and ghee. The body is able to metabolize and receive nourishment from both, unlike refined vegetable and seed oils, such as canola, sunflower, and soy oils, margarine and artificial fats. When you heat these refined oils for cooking, they harden up and form a compound that is one molecule away from plastic! They thicken your blood and clog your arteries and cause inflammation.
2) Avoid unfermented soy such as tofu, edamame and soy milk as they contain hemagluttinins (they thicken your blood) which predisposes you to blood clotting.
3) Avoid red meats, hard aged cheeses and nutbutters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc) they are heavy to digest and thicken the blood as well.
4) Avoid protein powders such as pea protein and others – again, they are heavy and thicken the blood.
Instead: 
* take zinc bhasma – Ayurvedically prepared to enhance its absorption, as it prevents a cytokine storm;
* expose your skin to the sun as the Vitamin D created can boost your immunity to all viruse;
*Guduchi Satwa can modulate your immune system, which means that it supports your immune system to fight the infection without over-reacting causing a heightened response and subsequent cytokine storm.
*Always eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Lately I’ve been drinking an apple pineapple smoothie (pictured here) as pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme which can not only keep your blood thin but can prevent a cytokine storm as well.
Apples contain pectin which promote bile flow. Our bile clears fats out of our blood, keeping it nice and thinned out.
Here’s the recipe: make 2 cups of fresh pressed apple cider and put in a blender with 1 1/2 cups of cubed pineapple chunks. Blend for two minutes. Drink immediately.
Be careful as you go back out into the world and stay healthy!

Does EMF Disrupt Sleep? Spring Detox Update – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter June 4, 2020 – #21, Vol 10

Many of us remember dancing to the tune of “The Age of Aquarius” in 1969 and we are now probably wondering wehether it was a premature move? Whether perhaps the Age of Aquarius wasn’t what it was made out to be; perhaps its arrival was miscalculated; perhaps – and we want to believe – that it is yet to come… Cosmic time-scale is after all hard to conceive off. What counts as the fraction of a second in cosmic terms could easily amount to 100 years in human terms… Either way, until we have more concrete signs of a utopian aquarian society made real, we have to deal with “The Age of Zoom”! And lots – LOTS - of EMF exposure. Even for those of us decrying the harmful effects of overexposure of the human body and mind to electromagnetic devices now have no choice but to resort to longer and more involved usage of electronic devices, as they have come to replace our in-operson social interactions and activities prior to Covid. We have very less choice not to do so nowadays. But perhaps revisiting the impact of EMF on our bodies will remind us to reduce and minimize and try to reach out for the printed book instead, or make the effort to stretch more on our yoga mat, and storing away our electronic pads and going for less screentime. 
Because, as we know all too well, the electro-magnetic field suppresses the activity of the pineal gland and reduce melatonin production. EMF also affects our serotonin levels, the circadian rhythm our bodies run on, as well as the endocrine system. Electromagnetic waves from electrical appliances also trigger serotonin and melatonin in the brain and body (positive ions increase serotonin levels in the body the same way Prozac does); melatonin is an important neuro-hormone in the body. In the pineal gland, serotonin converts into melatonin by enzymatic interaction. Serotonin and melatonin regulate the circadian rhythm. Melatonin also regulates the function of all organs of endocrine system. Improper functioning of hormones exposes us to the risk of depression, mood swings, anxiety, sleep disturbances, brain tumors, and other neu- rological illness (Ref:Antidepressant facts: The Serotonergic system, the Pineal gland & side effects of serotonin acting anti depressants). 
So you see, it’s not just about a little longer, a few more minutes… It actually becomes a vicious cycle as your body’s bio-chemical balance gets thrown off and you find yourself spiraling down a black hole! Even the most up-beat irrepressible optimist will find herself in a brooding grey mood.
You know what you need to do. You know where you need to cut screen-time. You know how and where you can cut exposure to EMF. Do it.
Need inspiration? Here are some helpful tips Vaidya Mishra shared with us:
  1. Turn off your wifi in the evenings and reduce/eliminate exposure to EMF ideally after 6pm-7pm. 
  2. Make sure to eat food that’s full of prana or life-force and soma – nothing acidic or with preservatives and synthetic flavors etc.
  3. Go for a walk outside under the moonlight, hug a tree, lie down on soil or sand – initiate contact with prana in nature to support your body’s restoration of natural prana, your best protection against EMF.
  4. Wear raw silk shawl, shirt, head scarf during electronic device usage. Raw silk is a poor/bad conductor and helps protect against EMF. 
  5. Keep your sleep and awakening time set, and go to bed by 9:30 pm latest. Even if you don’t feel sleep, go to your bedroom and lie in bed anticipating sleep. Lower/turn off the light in your bedroom; have good ventilation/fresh air flow in your bedroom; and wear cotton – nothing synthetic – to bed. All these will help support you to fall asleep faster and deeply. If you are still having a hard time falling asleep, try one of Vaidya Mishra’s Soma Nidra formulations. They are all amazing, but some prefer the tea, while others swear by the roll-on. They will help pacify your heart and mind, and settle the nervouse system, so you get restorative nightly sleep, night after night, and are ready to face this brave new world every morning with renewed shakti!

SPRING 2020 DIY HOME-DETOX UPDATE
In our third session, we covered the second type of toxin that can also result from mental and emotional stress in addition to an imbalanced diet. We also learnt and practiced the Samadhi Marma Protocol to help address mental and emotional stress. Then we shared our detox experiences. Whatever you may want to call it, the “new normal” or the “new UN-normal,” bottomline: we are witnessing unprecedented times where we are called upon to make difficult decisions not only to safeguard what we own, who we are, what we stand for, but to survive in a world where all humanitarian minimal established norms and guidelines no longer hold sway. Wedding and celebratory events have been cancelled; the dead are left unburied or tossed into communal pits; death lurks at every corner with every breath we take; the future has never looked so dark and uncertain… How do you maintain mental and emotional clarity when everything you had known to be true and tested no longer holds true?! How are we to muster emotional strength to cope?
We know that chronic emotional dis-stress causes inflammation, and inflammation is at the source of any/all disease… But let’s digress for a moment shall we? Before trying to figure that one out! Here’s a beautiful story Vaidya once told us. It’s the story of a special tree. And a very evil man. Long long ago, once upon a time…..

Ashoka : the Story of a Bliss-Giving Tree 
 …There was a hard-hearted man who made his living by inflicting grief upon others and his environment: he robbed and killed for a living. His name was “sashoka” – “with grief” or “full of grief.” 
One day, he set out on his daily path, and came to a rishi’s hut. He walked straight in thinking to go about his usual criminal business. The rishi was in deep meditation and did not come out of his meditative trance. It was the very first time Sashoka was witnessing the sight of deep meditative trance. The rishi did not heed him at all and stood still glowing in his silent bliss. Sashoka stood there, intrigued, drawn by the peace surrounding the rishi.
When the rishi finally opened his eyes, Sashoka was a changed man. He said to the rishi: “I want to be at peace like you. Give me that peace that can liberate me from my mental torment, the memory of my sins, as well as my sins.”
 The rishi taught him how to meditate but cautioned him: “I do not have the power to get rid of your sins. However, keep meditating. In your next life, you will be reborn as a tree. You will be the tree under which Raavan will come to keep Sita hostage. Sita will be in deep grief, away from her beloved Ram. You will shelter Sita and help relieve her pain. When the monkey God Hanuman finally finds her and comes to give her the news of her imminent release from Raavan’s abduction, he will climb your branches, and through the contact of his body you will gain liberation from your sins. And then, you will be known as the tree “a-shoka:” the one without grief and that removes grief.”
This is the time-old story of the origin of the ashoka tree as told in the Bhavishya Puran.
But there are other beautiful stories about this powerful plant. In the vedic tradition, the ashoka tree is known as a powerful grief-reliever and bliss-giver. The shastras say that one of the arrows of kamdeva, the god of love, was made from ashoka flowers! Buddhists hold that the birth of the buddha happened under the ashoka tree in Lumbini. There is also a ritual in West Bengal that occurs in the Spring, when young girls and women dance around the tree to propitiate a fortunate love-life. 
The Ashoka tree is a divine bliss-giving tree. But did you know that science has found it to have proven properties, such as: analgesic; anti-bacterial; anti-diabetic; anti-cancer; anti-inflammatory; anti-menorrhagic; antioxidant; anti-ulcer; cardioprotective; antipyretic  - and so many more…. Furthermoe, recent scientific research has established a link between inflammatory conditions and depression, and it just so happens (!) that all the key ingredients that Ayurveda recommends for depression also happen to be great anti-inflammatory agents, and carry anti-inflammatory properties…
Vaidya Mishra taught us that the way to address emotional
imbalances is by working on inflammatory conditions arising out of pitta and pitta subdosha aggravations. For example, the bark of the Ashoka tree. As its name indicates, a-shoka, as in “no-grief ” or “un-grief ”- we know the potency of this plant in helping one handle emotional challenges, as the Sanskrit sutras teach us. But if you go in-depth, and look at the properties of Ashoka, you will find that it is highly astringent, that is: it alkalizes the cellular system, and has a deep anti-inflammatory action in the body.
Vaidya Mishra was very well versed in using Ashoka in so many different ways and through different delivery systems. However, he also always added rose petals with it, to create a synergistic vehicle to further support and magnify the healing and balancing properties of Ashoka. The aromatic principle of
rose petals, along with their similar cooling and soothing chemical properties further help support sadhak pitta and soothe the heart and body, calming the mind. Rose and Ashoka together help for a faster and deeper relief from grief and emotional upset. But he also added more. He used DGL, which is deglycerized licorice. Ample research lists the anti-inflammatory properties of licorice and its health benefits. But in SVA, we only use it as a deep pitta-pacifying ingredient for the heart, stomach, liver, and cellular system. One thing is crucial for your to keep in mind, and that is: the epicenter of
pitta is the stomach, and then the liver. So the health of the stomach and the liver support the health of sadhak pitta. This, in a nutshell, gives you the key to the food-mood secret. If you are eating high pH alkaline anti-inflammatory foods that are keeping your stomach and your liver balanced and cool and happy, then you will be able to overcome any/all emotional
challenges. We learn with Ayurveda not only the importance, but also what it means to have a holistic approach to a health issue, and how and why it needs to be addressed that way. Now in practical terms, here are some things you can do if you are experiencing some emotional ups and downs. Feeling blue? Here’s what you can do! Make sure you are eating good SVA food – preferably prepared with SVA Pitta Masala and pitta pacifying ingredients such as summer squashes, coconut, good healthy protein. Adding takra, or fresh buttermilk to your lunch specially as the weather warms up is a must. Do not skip or delay your meals to keep all pitta doshas in check. If your liver is hot, apply DGL on your liver every night before bed. But more than anything else, make sure to add Ashoka to your daily life and routine, because now you know all about the wonderful properties of this ancient plant as confirmed in the Sanskrit sutra-s. Stay safe, but most of all – be happy, no matter what comes your way…. You can do this!

RESILIENCE this Sunday; Protect Your Eyes; REPLAY of “Cook SVA with Divya”; Spring-Cleanse: It’s Time! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter April 23, 2020 – #15, Vol 10

We are witnessing times of rapid radical change on so levels of life on earth. Greatest of which has been an accelerated dependence on electronic devices. While this has introduced new recreational dimensions to our sedentary lives during lockdown, as well as productivity, it has also shifted ways in which we are made inordinately dependent on electromagnetic devices and technology. 
Through SVA, we know that this technology carries more agneya (fiery) energy, and can deplete our soma – the life-giving and supporting nourishing aspect of nature. And this on many levels. But specially for the eyes. In Ayurveda, the eyes, or “chakchu,” are a predominantly agneya organ, characterized by transformational energy. Through the eyes, we not only see, but we also “cook” or transform what we see into information and experience. The eyes are run by several sub-doshas, but “alochak pitta” is the primary subdosha to address when trying to keep your eyes healthy. Alochak pitta works in tandem with all other four pitta sub-dosha-s that govern our body: pachaka in the stomach, ranjaka in the liver, sadhaka in the heart, and bhrajaka in the skin. Alochaka, however, shares a special relation with ranjaka and sadhaka. In this sense, if one of them those go off, the likelihood of the others going off is greater. Now that we are all connected and spending so much more time on our computers during this lockdown, it is important to keep our most precious organ, our eyes, healthy and doshically balanced. 
To keep our eyes healthy, there are several things SVA recommends locally, as well as generally.
Diet: is always key for pacifying subdoshas, and particularly so for pitta. Avoiding pitta-aggravating sour, pungent, acidic foods, salty foods, and instead eating lots of colorful vegetables, as well as seasonal sweet juicy fruits can work wonders. Also, not skipping or delaying meals will help keep pachak pitta in balance in the stomach.
Take care of sadhak and ranjak pitta: taking care of of our sadhak pitta and ranjak pitta can work wonders for the care of your eyes. Sadhak pitta governs the heart, and processes our emotions and thoughts. Ranjak pitta governs the liver and processes the food we ingest. Making sure that both sadhaka and ranjaka are cool and balanced will help support the eyes. All the things that help keep your emotions happy and healthy will keep your sadhak pitta in balance: from garnering positive mental habits to avoiding horror movies, going to bed on time and making sure you get some laughs and down time daily, you can keep sadhak pitta in check. Ranjak pitta gets affected by mental and emotional predisposition as much as bad food, and stress. So putting attention on managing your life and diet will help keep ranjak pitta in check.

Ashoka, Arjuna, Rose, DGL, and more: can play a central role when used daily and properly. For example, Ashoka, Arjuna, Rose, De-glycerized Licorice, are wonderful herbal support for pitta subdoshas. SVA formulations that can readily help you pacify pitta subdoshas: the Samadhi Set (cream or roll-on) with Ashoka; rose is a balm for pitta! You can use it in any form or shape as an external transdermal application, as an aroma therapeutic addition, or ingest it in the SVA Rose preserve form. Then DGL – either as a loose ingredient to make tea with (1 pinch DGL powder, 2 rosebuds, 1/4 tsp fennel seeds, 1/4 tsp coriander seeds – these proportions are per cup – drink no more than 2 cups a day); or as a cream or roll-on to apply on the liver area. Of course, SVA Pitta Tea, and SVA Pitta Masala are always great delicious additions to daily diet. Other ingredients that are also known to be of great help for the eyes, for example: Triphala if of course well-known for its three-dosha pacifying, detoxifying and nurturing effect on the eyes. Vaidya has made a special formula for the eyes that has Triphala and SVA Mom’s Ghee made from raw cream (not butter). Ghee made in the traditional method is particularly considered best for the eyes, because ghee carries a balanced amount of soma and agni. When Triphala is infused in the ghee it becomes nectar for the eyes! It will then not only nurture but also pacify alochak pitta and support alochak agni. 
ALA and Triphala Ghee for the eyes: Vaidya has also formulated Alpha Lipoic Acid cream which is great for eye care. Due to chronological aging, or the extensive drying effect of EMF on the eyes, the circulation of blood to the optic nerve and retina gets slowed down. Alpha Lipoic Acid has been shown to have the specific beneficial ability to enhance the blood supply to the nerves. The eyes being an agneya organ (fiery and hot organ), ALA is ideal for soothing without overheating or stimulating the eyes further even as it enhances blood flow and circulation. Ideally, if you have tired sore eyes, it is great to do the marma protocol at night with SVA Triphala ghee, and then, in the morning, do the marma treatment with the ALA cream. The ALA cream is also a great cream to use for eye care and eye marma massage, as it works like a gentle non-greasy facial cream base. You can do the eye marma massage with ALA and then continue your usual SVA facial marma massage with Lalita’s Facial oil or Age-defying cream.
Yet other wonderful formulations are: the amalaki berry (Wild Amla Capsules), Calcium (Soma Cal capsules), Triphala (Triphala for High Pitta Capsules).
Staying safe means supporting and protecting our most precious organs, our eyes. Do not over-indulge in external viewing, instead, take time to close your eyes and explore your inner landscape. SVA Sinus Cough’n Cold Inhaler 
This inhaler contains natural essential oil that are known for millenia in Ayurveda to help unblock the nasal cavity and support the lung channels. Anti-bacterial Immuno-supporting Uses of Tribindu
