O-L-E-A-T-E: inside-out!
Autumn’s here! The excess heat of the summer accumulated in the environment – and our bodies – results in dryness. We see it around us in nature as trees shed dry leaves, and we feel in our bodies too – dry skin, excess thirst, etc. In Ayurvedic terms, this is the time when we experience high pitta resulting in and leading into high vata. Emotionally we may feel impatient or even short-tempered; mentally we may feel spaced-out and forgetful; we may also have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep. All these things can really make our transition into Autumn pretty miserable when our activities increase. BUT there’s ONE very simple & effective thing you can do daily or weekly to address all of the above: oleate! Inside-out.
ABHYANGA is for the body
This is the best time of year to indulge in self-massages with herbalized nourishing body oils. Nowhere is the science of ayurvedic transdermal healing better illustrated than in the chapter on Abhyanga. Abhyanga is the time-tested ancient method of massaging the body with warm herbalized oils to make the limbs supple, relax and energize the mind, building resistance to physical and mental stress.With unique SVA formulations, you can now safely supplement your body with Magnesium, Vit D, Turmeric, and many more unique herbal and floral synergies. Massage, when it’s done right, relieves fatigue and stress, relaxes the muscles, calms the mind, improves circulation. It is ideal to get a massage a week, or even two! But if you can’t afford to get the time for one, or can’t seem to find that perfect therapist who does not leave you bruised after a too deep-tissue massage session, why not do it yourself? That’s right, you can do this yourself in the comfort of your own home each morning, or at least once, or twice, per week. The benefits are innumerable. It transdermally nourishes the body with minerals and nutrients – depending on the oil you are using;
pacifies all the doshas; relieves fatigue; provides stamina, and induces deep restful sleep at night; enhances the complexion and the luster of the skin; promotes longevity; improves circulation; gives mental clarity; strengthens the immune system; and so much more…
But even simpler than that is to remember to apply oil on your body orifices: oral cavity, ears, nose, anal. Even one drop goes a long long way.
NASYA is for the nostrils
In your nasal cavity, it will take away that irritating sensation of dryness but also calm your mind. The nasal cavity is exposed daily to bacterial infestations that can wreak havoc in many aspects of our health. We can develop allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergies, allergy to animals, dust, etc.); respiratory-tract infection (cold, pneumonia, etc.); chronic congestion; acute or chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses); chronic dryness; bleeding; etc. Your medical doctor or ayurvedic expert may recommend saline water to help clean and disinfect the nasal passage for daily maintenance and for alleviating nasal infections. Saline water, even though effective and many a times necessary, can be, with long term use, harsh, drying, and depleting for the nasal canals. In direct contrast to this, Ayurveda recommends nasya. Apply one drop daily not only supports and balances the nasal pathways, keeping bacterial growth at bay, but it is balances and lubricates the brain and sense organs overall. Ayurveda lauds the use of oils for the nasal cavity, explaining that insufficient lubrication of the nasal pathways can make one dizzy, spacey, and even anxious.
GANDUSH is for the mouth, KARNA for the ears & GUDA for the anus
Gargling with an herbalized gandush oil blend in the mornings will not only help strengthen and ease inflammation in your gums, but it will also soothe your throat; one drop of karna oil on a q-tip applied in your ears will help keep the ear canal lubricated and itch-free! A couple drops on your anal orifice too will give you greater hygiene and comfort.
Then do it internally too. Eat good fat: are you still using canola oil? Did you ever wonder why you’ve never heard of or seen an image of a Canola plant or seed?!!! It’s because it does NOT exist! When you do a search for that, what you get are images of the “rapeseed” plant. Canola oil is an oil that was industrially manufactured in 1978. The word “Canola” was put together to indicate a new selectively bred oil from the original rapeseed. It was first developed in Canada, and the name Canola actually comes from the term, Canadian oil: Can-ola. It’s the commercial name of a genetically modified version of Rapeseed – otherwise very toxic.
There are great health-risks of consuming Canola oil. Here are a few:
  • it depletes vitamin E.
  • increases rigidity of your membranes, which can trigger degenerative diseases.
  • due to its high sulfur content, it goes easily rancid easily, which can exacerbate allergies and bronchial or asthmatic issues.
  • Human studies reveal canola causes an increase in lung cancers.
  • it can shorten the lifespan of animals and lower platelet count.
  • Daily canola consumption can raise your triglycerides over 40 percent.
  • it molds quickly and also inhibits enzyme function.
  •  It opens the door for free radicals, undermining natural antioxidants, and has been linked to increased incidence of many diseases.
  • you can’t tell when it goes bad so it’s hard to tell if you’re consuming it rancid

WHY GO FOR MOM’S GHEE?
Ghee is the best oil to consume all year round. If you haven’t tried Mom’s Ghee yet, it’s time! Ghee is considered to be one of the most health-promoting of all foods. It pacifies all 3 doshas, strengthens the body, improves memory and mental functions, and promotes longevity and fertility. The brain is made of cholesterol and the reproductive hormones which keep us young are both made of cholesterol, which is why the ancient doctors who wrote the textbooks on Ayurveda said that children who ate ghee would be highly intelligent and women would be very fertile if they ate ghee. Also, the cholesterol residing in the various layers of the skin is converted into Vitamin D when the sun hits the skin. Vitamin D prevents auto-immune diseases, like MS, prevents colds and flus, aids in the absorption of calcium from the intestines. Thyroid hormones cannot work inside the cell unless there is adequate levels of Vitamin D there. This is why many people I see have normal thyroid hormone production, but present with all thyroid symptoms, such as hair loss, arrhythmias, weight gain, poor circulation and fatigue. Ghee has numerous medical applications: it is useful applied topically on burns, it is helpful to the eyes, it is used in many herbal mixtures, such as Chyawan Prash since it serves as a vehicle that carries the nutrients across the lipid-permeable cell membranes and into our cells. All the cell walls in our bodies are made of cholesterol. It has one of the highest flash points (485 degrees fahrenheit) of any cooking oil, thus the creation of free radicals and oxidized molecules from high temperature cooking is prevented. Butter got its name from butyric acid and ghee, which is concentrated butter, is the highest known food source of butyric acid (a short-chain fatty acid). So let’s take a deeper look at butyric acid and see why it is so good for us: Butyric acid is the primary fuel for cells of the colon, it feeds the friendly bacteria which helps to boost our immunity and blocks the growth of bad bacteria in the gut. It is a monounsaturated fatty acid that reduces inflammatory conditions, not only in the gut, such as found in Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, but also in the lining of the arteries, thus preventing damage to the artery and consequent plaque formation. It not only reduces inflammation, but aids in repair of the mucous layer in the gut. It reduces leakage of undigested food particles, otherwise known as leaky gut, which is epidemic in our modern society from pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics, birth control pills, steroids and immunizations. These medications damage the friendly bacteria, thus creating the leaky gut scenario. When ghee is made according to the definition given in the shastras, it provides very deep nourishment to all of the dhatus (tissues) of the body and helps generate ojas, the most subtle material in the body. Ghee made according to the definition is also medhya, nourishing to the brain. Without ojas there would be no life at all, and depleted or corrupted ojasgives poor immunity and imbalanced function of the neuro-hormones and neuro-transmitters. Ghee can directly enhance ojas in the body, but only if the ghee you eat is made according to the strict guidelines of the shastras. When ghee is made from old butter or non-organic butter, when it is made from non-cultured butter, when it has become rancid, or does not have a deeply rich, delicious aroma, that ghee is not really ghee according to Charak Samhita, the oldest textbook of Ayurveda. Those types of ghee do not deliver the micro-nutrition and ultimately the prana which the brain and the body require to function optimally. And those types of ghee may even contain toxins which can lodge deep into the fat tissue or the brain, and can lead to disease over time. It is good to learn how to make ghee according to the definition set forth in Charak Samhita in your own home because it will ensure the greatest freshness and will allow you to enjoy the very medicinal takra, fresh buttermilk by-product of making ghee. But making ghee correctly can be time consuming. We give detailed instructions on www.chandika.com. If time is short in your life, we offer this ghee, made according to the definition of the shastras as a way for you to get the benefits of true ghee without doing all of the work.
Enjoy!
