When temperatures drop in the Fall, our micro- and macro- circulatory channels shrink, trapping in excess pitta, keeping the nutrients and heat from circulating evenly, and resulting in cravings, specially for sweet and heavy. And if our agni is not sharp and balanced, we end up making ama. With our channels being clogged, the evacuation of toxins is also blocked, and you guessed it, our immunity crashes and we catch a cold or develop a cough. There are many things we can and should do to ward off the seasonal cough and cold. Here are some key practical tips:
  1. Mind your channels: your physical and vibrational channels need extra support when the weather gets colder. Don’t skip your morning self-massage. Even if you have to cut it short in case you are running late, do at least your arms and legs. Some light yoga and/or exercise will do wonders for your circulation as well as mental and emotional balance.
  2. Don’t skip or delay meals: this will further aggravate your pachak agni or digestive fire, make your vata dosha higher resulting in more sugar cravings. Keep your cravings in check with light easy to digest protein – if you are vegetarian, Vaidya’s Vegan Protein shake with Vaidya’s Vegan Protein Powder for example. 
  3. Be Dosha-wise: “dosha” means “fault” or “imbalance.” Nothing more. Being a body-type only means you have the propensity towards particular imbalances. And you can ward those imbalances off before they accumulate. Being a vata type or dosha, for example, only means you are prone to slow digestion, dry skin, a restless mind, etc. This can be corrected. It is not who you are unless you allow your body’s propensity for imbalance to take over. 
Following these three primary tips will help your immunity stay strong so you don’t contract infectous diseases, however, if you find you are contracting something, there are many ayurvedic remedies you can use. In particular one!
Vaidya’s SVA Tribindu spray is a must-have. Tribindu stands for – “tri” for three, and “bindu” for drop. Tribindu is made of 3 ingredients: Camphor, Ajwain, and Peppermint. Vaidya has brought this ancient formula back for us, adding another holy ingredient to it: Tulsi, to make it even more potent. 
How do you use Tribindu?
In India, during the rainy season, disease can be rampant in village settings because of the prominence of water and air-born infections. Vaidya’s ancestors used this formula to keep infections at bay within the individual or in the environment. They would recommend different ways of using it to either cleanse the environment or strengthen an individual’s immunity.
The ancestral SVA healers long knew about the powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties of Camphor, Ajwain, and Peppermint. They also used this formula to help with insect and mosquito bites. In addition, they recommended it for extreme cold weather conditions when the body’s physical circulatory channels are known to shrink. In this case, simply inhaling this Tribindu would help relax and open the channels and support overall immunity – open channels release toxins much more easily and readily. Spray it on a cotton scarf or handkerchief and inhale gently. Or spray it in the room – if you get it in your eyes by mistake rinse off with cool water. Spray it on the soles of your feet at night and wear some loose socks and feel the warmth!

What is “True” Healing?
If you’ve been diagnosed with a disease, keep in mind that the name of the disease isn’t as important as what actually caused that disease…
  This is one (of the many) thing(s) I love about Ayurveda: we are able to detect the numerous imbalances that have been building up over a lifetime that resulted into the disease, and work on fixing those before they manifest as a chronic condition. 
While modern medicine offers amazing diagnostic tools which I encourage our patients to use, these methods of diagnosis can’t show or detect the subtle early imbalances which cause the disease. For many reasons.
Number one: the underlying imbalances are numerous: there is not just one cause for a particular health problem; and number two: these imbalances are often far removed from where the symptom is…
For example, most skin conditions come from old toxins sitting in the liver and blood; hair loss is usually caused by depletion of the bone tissue and/or thyroid problems; acid reflux usually is caused by lack of bile flow in the gall bladder; puffiness under the eyes mean the kidneys and liver are weak and overladen with toxicity; etc. 
Sometimes modern medicine can be used in a crisis to suppress and thus “control” the symptoms of a disease especially if the symptom is life-threatening, such as high blood pressure; but don’t forget to roll up your sleeves and fix the underlying cause of the high blood pressure: stop clogging your arteries with the hard cheeses or nut butters or red meats which cause the blood pressure to go up. Don’t start out your day with coffee which causes the release of cortisol, adrenaline and epinephrine from your adrenals, which shrinks down the arteries causing the blood pressure to go up. Thin out your blood with medicinal herbal teas; clean and support the congested overworked liver; restore the depleted magnesium; identify all the reasons in your particular case as to why the blood pressure is high and work on fixing them….
Adopt this approach to any disease and you’ll be surprised to see that our bodies are fully capable of when given the opportunity to heal themselves — we just have to nudge them in the right direction…

What’s Shroto Shuddhi Tea
& Why & How to Use It?
The Ayurvedic texts are clear about the importance of the physical circulatory channels: ”shroto mayo purusha,” – “the whole body is nothing but physical circulatory channels or shrota-s.” Vaidya taught us that only when your channels are open, and free from acidic toxins, can health be truly yours. Only when your channels are open and balanced can nourishment reach deep into the body and can toxins be flushed out regularly & completely from the body.
Shroto-Shudhi Tea compliments Vaidya’s Shroto-Shudhi Masala, but can be enjoyed on its own anytime by anyone, specially when the weather cools off! The masala targets channels in the body which carry “earthy soma” (food materials) and, when cooked with a good fatty medium (ghee, olive oil) it supports the metabolism of lipid soluble materials. On the other hand, the tea addresses “liquid soma” (water soluble materials) and gives you an immediate boost of energy and oxygenation. Both products open the channels and burn ama (partially digested food material) without aggravating amavisha – the reactive toxins sitting in the body.
When/how to use it?
You can start your day with it: start with a pinch for a cup of water (8oz) bring to a boil and enjoy. You may add almond milk (or cow’s milk) or a sweetener – or not. You can also have this tea after lunch, in the afternoon, or after dinner! Anytime anywhere anyway! It is tridoshic – for all body types. Should You Vaccinate Against the Flu or Not? Be an Informed Decision-Maker with
Dr Teitelbaum
 
Flu season is in full gear! We are currently in the middle of flu season and many people are wondering if they should hunker down and get a flu shot. Many have heard some negative things about the shot and are expressing concerns about some possible side effects, and would like me to give them some information so they can decide what they should do.
 
Before we begin our discussion, I do want to make it clear that it is totally up to you to decide which way to go. All I can do is present the pros and cons of both sides. You do what makes the most sense to you and what you feel most comfortable doing.
 
So here goes: the flu is a virus, thus there are no antibiotics you can take once you get it, since antibiotics only kill bacteria. Modern medicine has some medications to ward off the symptoms of the flu, such as decongestants, cough syrups, an antiviral drug, analgesics, and other anti-inflammatory pain relievers, but treatment consists primarily of rest and plenty of fluids to let the body fight the infection on its own.
 
How Does A Flu Shot Work? 
Flu shots are given to prevent infection by helping the body develop antibodies to the flu virus that is going around that year. Having said that…it is also good to know the other side of the argument:
 
First, the flu vaccine is far from perfect as it is only about 60% effective, and some years, such as this one, even much less.
 
Second, the flu shot does contain mercury, which in the long run can actually weaken your immune system, making you even more susceptible to getting the flu in the future. Keep in mind – the immune system consists of 1) the friendly bacteria in the gut – which are the first line of defense for incoming cold and flu viruses, which are in every breath we take; 2) the liver – which makes antibodies to diseases; and 3) the bone marrow – where most of the immune system cells are made – white and red blood cells and platelets.
 
From Ayurveda, we have learnt that mercury, one of the ingredients in the flu shot, is excessively hot by nature, so much so that it burns the friendly bacteria immediately after the shot is given. It also heats the liver, disrupting its normal function, and goes directly into the bone marrow due to its sharp piercing properties. Keep in mind that toxins accumulating in the bone marrow can trigger an autoimmune disease, which is why we ayurvedically explain that autoimmune diseases such as Guillain-Barre (and others) can occur after receiving a flu shot.
 
The body contains seven tissues (or dhatus) which we recognize in Ayurveda: rasa, rakta, mamsa, meda, asthi, majja and shukra. These are the Sanskrit names. In English they are: the blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and reproductive fluids. There are gaps in between these seven tissues so that toxins cannot make their way into the bone marrow directly. Those gaps act as a filtering defense system, but also metabolize the incoming materials from one tissue to the next.We can say that it is Nature’s way of protecting us from developing autoimmune diseases and cancer by protecting and shielding the bone marrow in order to prevent a build up of toxins there.
 
HOWEVER, these very hot, piercing elements, such as mercury, which speedily bypass and penetrate through all the barriers, go directly into the bone marrow, wreaking havoc there.
 
What’s in your Flu Shot?
According to the CDC, here is a list of all the ingredients in a flu shot: four or five different flu strains, formaldehyde, aluminum, gelatin, mercury, chicken egg proteins, and antibiotics. 
 
Why is formaldehyde used in the flu shot? It is included because it is needed to deactivate the virus they are injecting into you to prevent it from actually giving you the flu, and also to kill any other toxins in the flu shot, preventing you from getting sick from them. (Please do keep in mind that formaldehyde itself is both toxic and deadly).
 
Why is aluminum used in the flu vaccine? Aluminum is considered an adjuvant to boost your immune system to respond to the virus they are injecting into you, which is one of the reasons many people will develop an autoimmune disease after their flu shot, as their immune system is synthetically pushed beyond its normal function. Adjuvants are also used to prevent sickness from the diseases after receiving the shot. Aluminum is the most common adjuvant used in vaccines. (Keep this in mind as well: it is a potent neurotoxin, and has repeatedly been shown in numerous studies to cause brain damage, especially Alzheimer’s). 
 
Why is Thimerosal (mercury) part of the flu vaccine? Because it keeps bacteria and fungi from growing in the vaccine which can otherwise happen when a syringe is in a vial. No need for a side note here as we just mentioned how deadly mercury is – in fact it is considered to be THE most deadly compound known to mankind.
 
Why are eggs in the flu shot? The flu virus needs somewhere to grow before it’s in the vaccine. The virus copies itself while in fertilized chicken eggs, and then it is separated from the egg and is now ready for vaccination. But sometimes egg protein remains in the virus after the process, which could be a problem for those allergic to eggs, or those who are strict vegetarians. Also, it is easy for infection to grow in the eggs, which is why antibiotics (neomycin) are included in the flu shot, as they keep bacteria from getting into the eggs, which aren’t sterile.
 
Here are a few other interesting facts to help you make a decision on which way to help you prevent and/or treat the flu:
 
1.      The latest research in the Journal of Virology found that the seasonal flu vaccine may weaken children’s immune systems and potentially increase their chances of catching other influenza viruses (see below).
2.    Children who did not receive a flu shot naturally built up more antibodies across a wider variety of influenza strains compared to vaccinated children.
3.    There are many unanswered questions about whether or not the flu shot is safe and effective as more studies are published showing it is neither.
4.    It is primarily the state of your health and immune system that determines whether or not you will get sick from being exposed to viral or bacterial organisms associated with diseases like colds and flus. Healthy lifestyle choices as indicated here will boost your immunity, whereas vaccinations can be immune-suppressing.
 
Perhaps the study which alarmed me the most regarding the flu shot was from Bodewes R., et al., Journal of Virology, Volume 85, August 31, 2011, entitled, “Annual vaccination against influenza virus hampers development of virus-specific T cell immunity in children.”
 
Here is a brief quote from the article, “Our results indicate that annual influenza vaccination is effective against seasonal influenza but hampers the development of virus-specific T cell responses. The consequences of these findings are discussed in the light of the development of protective immunity to seasonal and future pandemic influenza viruses.”
 
Let me translate: There are two types of immune system cells – the B cells (so-called because they develop in the bone marrow) which produce antibodies, and the T cells (which develop in the thymus gland) which recognize and kill virus-infected cells. And some T cells help the B cells make antibodies to fight infections.
 
It is your T cells which connect to viruses on the outside of infected cells and kill them. Thus they find and destroy infected cells that have been turned into virus-making factories. 
 
The alarming thing about this article is that it demonstrates once and for all that the flu shot can actually suppress the development of these extremely important T cells. What this means is that while yes, by receiving a flu shot, you (or your child) may not get the flu this year (although many, many of my patients come down with the flu after receiving one), in the long run you may seriously disable your immune system in the future, making it less effective in warding off colds and flus. 
 
This is the modern medical model of how to prevent the flu. Let’s switch now to a somewhat less toxic approach used in SVA to both prevent and treat symptoms of the flu.
 
SVA Tips and Guidelines to Protect Against the Flu
First, now that you know the three parts of the immune system, keep them in good working order by either taking a good probiotic such as Natren’s probiotics or making good homemade yogurt from Natren’s yogurt starter and then making lassi or buttermilk to keep your friendly bacteria in good shape. Be careful with having milk and milk products in the Winter time. Always add some spice mixture, or fresh ginger if you can handle and like it, to help you digest milk products and yoghurt fully. Vaidya’s Mom’s Masala is pretoasted and can be added to your lassi (buttermilk).
 
Next, take very good care of your liver, which means watch all the food you eat, the pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals you take, the skin care products you use, as well as your exposure to pesticides, heavy metals and air pollution, as the liver has to clear the body of all these toxins. Seek out advice from an SVA practitioner to see if you need any of our herbs which can support the liver in all its functions.
 
Support your bone marrow through the use of moringa drops, tea or powder, or you can actually cook with moringa leaves and/or drumstick if you can find them (usually available in Indian markets). In addition, guduchi is the best herb for cleaning the bone marrow – available in drops, transdermal creams, tablets and guduchi satwa powder, if your liver is too hot to handle guduchi leaf tablets. Just follow the directions on the bottles for proper dosage.
 
Zinc can dismantle cold or flu viruses, but it must be burnt repeatedly into an ash, called a bhasma, for best absorption and assimilation into the cells. We have two strengths of zinc (called “Yasad Bhasma”), regular and Maha (which is a higher potency) drops. Put five drops in one cup of alkaline spring water a day and drink it down (only once a day is necessary).
 
Melt 1 tbs ghee, add 1 tsp of dried ground turmeric and saute it over a low heat for a couple of minutes to allow the turmeric to infuse into the ghee. Then pour this on your food 2-3 times a day. Turmeric can also kill viruses and bacteria upon contact. This is recommended when you actually have the flu or a cold to kill the virus. Then go back to your regular use of turmeric after the infection is gone. 
 
Some people recommend simmering turmeric in milk at bedtime for a few minutes to ward off infections. Add 2 pinches to your cup of milk and let simmer. Sip slowly after it cools down.
 
Immuno Support capsules can be taken, one after breakfast and one after dinner, if you choose to take an herbal route. These are various Ayurvedic herbs to boost your immune system to prevent a cold or a flu. Or you could choose immune support drops, 3 drops a day in 24 oz room temperature spring water, sipped slowly throughout the day.
 
Amla berry has 20 times more vitamin C than an orange, yet turns alkaline when it comes into the body, and has been used to ward off colds and flus for centuries. This is available in tablet (two tablets a day) or drop form (3 drops a day) as well.
 
Drink 1/2 cup pomegranate juice diluted with 1/2 cup spring water with 1 tsp raw honey added to it to fight cold and flu viruses.
 
For coughs, there are numerous herbs from Boswellia drops to fight inflammation in the lungs to Kantakari cough syrup (not for children under 12) to kantakari drops (for all age groups). Kantakari is a bronchodilator, and works to open up the bronchial tubes if you are having difficulty breathing.
 
And finally, as always, eat a healthy diet and go to bed early, to allow for optimum immune function. By using all these tools, you will be better prepared to both prevent and treat any cold or flu symptoms that might come your way this winter/spring.

Perimenopause and Menopause –
Symptoms & SVA Remedies
Many women start to experience problems with their menstrual cycle in the few years leading up to menopause. There are several reasons for this and it is actually quite easy to treat using our SVA approach. As with everything else however, we need to first and foremost identify the underlying causative factors, which, if you have been reading my articles for the past several years, vary in each individual. Even though different people can be experiencing similar symptoms, the causes will be completely different in each case. 
If you present to your family doctor or endocrinologist with menstrual cycles that are coming every two weeks, or cycles that continue on for 3-4 weeks with heavy bleeding or just a normal regular cycle that is extremely heavy, your doctor may recommend a procedure called a D&C (dilation and curettage) which dilates the cervix and then scrapes or suctions tissue from the lining of the uterus to reduce the heavy menstrual bleeding. Biopsies may be taken to examine the tissue under a microscope to establish the cause of the abnormal bleeding.  
What usually is found is either a fibroid growth or a uterine polyp, most of the time both noncancerous and benign. The doctor may then recommend oral contraceptives or oral progesterone. These may work, however the oral contraceptives, if taken for long periods of time, come with numerous side effects. For severe bleeding caused by a fibroid, they may recommend uterine artery embolization to shrink the fibroids in the uterus by blocking the uterine arteries and cutting off their blood supply. Depending on the size, number and location of the fibroids, your surgeon may choose to perform a myomectomy or surgical removal of the uterine fibroid. Or endometrial ablation may be recommended to destroy (ablating) the lining of the uterus (endometrium) using a laser applied to the endometrium to destroy the tissue, resulting in lighter periods. And when all else fails, a hysterectomy may be recommended to remove the uterus and cervix.
What I do is teach the patients to reflect upon why they may have developed a polyp or a fibroid in the first place, and work on addressing that core issue. Here’s our approach to this problem — first you must understand some basic principles of estrogen/progesterone production.
Estrogen creates growth in the body — at the time of puberty it develops the breast tissue, the hips become rounded out and it also builds up the endometrium lining, which is the lining women shed during their menstrual cycles – when they are not pregnant. While it is advantageous to have estrogen, it needs to be balanced with progesterone, which prevents too much growth or building up of the endometrium – or uterus lining. If you have read my book, Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda, I have described a scenario which creates an imbalance in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone. It is almost like a domino effect where one imbalance leads to another and then another, resulting in heavy menstrual cycles or frequent or unending periods.
Usually, something is affecting the thyroid gland, weakening it: either too much stress; or late nights; other factors resulting in Vata aggravation; drinking fluoridated water (fluoride is a poison to the thyroid gland); too many immunizations – such as flu shots which contain mercury (the thyroid absorbs the mercury and becomes disabled as a result; insufficient protein in the diet (the thyroid hormone is made out of animal protein); and several other reasons I’ve discussed in my book. Once the thyroid is weak, the gall bladder gets impacted and it will not empty the bile well. The bile that the gall bladder secretes plays a very important role. The bile clears out the excess estrogen which the liver breaks down and redirects to the bile, for removal via the bowel movement. When the thyroid becomes sluggish, the gall bladder automatically becomes sluggish, the bile doesn’t squirt and as a result the estrogen reabsorbs back into the bloodstream, creating a situation called “high estrogen/low progesterone.” 
You now know that estrogen builds up these various tissues, and too much of it can create cysts on the breasts or ovaries, uterine polyps and/or fibroids. It also builds up the endometrium lining so you could even have very heavy and/or long cycles or numerous cycles (every two weeks for example) even without the presence of a uterine fibroid or polyp.
So what do you do? The answer is to identify all the reasons your thyroid might be weak and address those reasons, support the thyroid gland with the herbs I mention in my book, and promote the flow of bile out of the gall bladder, thus preventing a buildup of estrogen. We use triphala, haritaki, Prakrit tablets to promote the flow of bile out of the gall bladder. We then use Alodhra, Ashoka and coriander seed tea to recalibrate the ratio between estrogen and progesterone. Sometimes we may have to add White Oak Bark if the menstrual bleeding is too heavy, and if there is a fibroid, cyst or polyp, it is recommended to use Kanchenar, which is available as a crude herb, glyceride drops or transdermal cream. Kanchenar both prevents as well as shrinks glandular growths.
In addition, in cases of heavy bleeding, Vaidya recommended reducing the intake of estrogenic foods. For example, minimize and/or completel avoid: fennel seeds, or fennel seed tea, or the fennel vegetable; as well as asparagus; orange yams; these are highly estrogenic and will increase your menstrual flow. The same is true for the more estrogenic herbs such as: Maca and Shatavari. Stay away from cane sugar which is also estrogenic. As well as pineapple and papaya: these are highly estrogeic as well. And always keep things balanced by adding/consuming progesterone-producing herbs such as: Alodhra, Ashoka and Coriander. Vaidya has also made a wonderful progesterone supporting formulation called “Femi-Ojas” that comes in nectar form as well as a transdermal cream. You can add this to your protocol. Also the Devadaru is a wonderful nectar drop he made that addresses the overall “intelligence” of the feminine hormonal system and reinstates it. It does not supply estrogen or progesteron but works on the overall intelligence and flow of the system, correcting and supporting it. 
However, another possible scenario is that the liver is overheated, and since the liver makes the blood, the blood overheats, which can also contribute to heavy menstrual bleeding. In this case you have to examine what toxins are coming into your body through: pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals (synthetic vitamins), bad food, or even onions and garlic in the diet, etc. The liver has to process all the toxins which you come into contact with via the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat and the skin care products you use – whose chemicals absorb directly from the skin and into the blood. In SVA, we have numerous ways of pacifying and cooling down the liver, including DGL cream down the spine and on the liver, Bhumi Amla, Mankand, and SVA herbalized Liver clay directly on the liver. In addition, we recommend to never skip or delay meals and to go to bed latest by 10:00 p.m. Skipping meals – even for intermittent fasting – and having a late bedtime both create aggravate ranjaka pitta, or the liver, and can result in heavy menstrual flows.  
Also: favor sweet juicy fruits instead of sour fruits; avoid alcohol and coffee; follow the SVA diet, which we always recommend as it is not only alkalinizing but supports overall circulation which is necessary on so many levels. Yellow squash and green zucchini are the best vegetables for cooling down the liver — and especially good is Loki squash (aka “bottle gourd”), if you have an Indian or Asian market nearby. 
If you decide that you want a D&C, or an ablation or other approach to fix your heavy menstrual bleeding, you should still address the underlying reason(s) that caused the bleeding in the first place, otherwise that imbalance could create more fibroids or polyps, or wreak havoc elsewhere in the body.
I hope this article helped shed some light on why menstrual flow can become heavy during perimenopause — which is a common occurence for many women; but it is also known to occur in younger women — so it is best to understand, isolate, and address the root cause(s) of such imbalance early on before they are allowed to becomes too difficult to manage with the use of herbs and SVA protocols.

Cool as a Cucumber with Vetiver and Aloe! 
Towards the end of Summer, just before things cool off, we may feel that we tolerate hot temperatures even less than usual! That’s because we are experiencing an accumulation/aggravation of pitta dosha. This is why the ayurvedic rishis recommended that we detox at “ritu sandhi” – the juncture between the two season – and balance out our doshas before embarking on the next season. You can read Vaidya Mishra’s blog to find out what you can do for the transition from Summer to Autumn – or join our home-detox course (see details below). But in the meantime, there are several quick things you can do to cool off!
Ayurveda offers plenty of solutions to help us cool off. Diet is of course number one. Make sure you rehydrate with fresh fruit juices and lots of lime and fresh mint leaves. You can never have enough rose in the summertime! If you haven’t tried Vaidya delectable rose petal preserve that’s sweet and carries a light tangy taste as well, this is the best time to discover it! Also making sure we are keeping our work load pleasantly light and taking enough breaks to refresh.
Otherwise, there’s more you can do by harnessing the intelligence of natural plants and ingredients. Such as Vetiver. Or Aloe. In Vaidya’s village, there is a long local tradition of using vetiver to refresh and cool things off on hot summer days. That’s what inspired him to put together a brand new SVA lotion, the “Aloe Vetiver Lotion.”
This SVA Summer lotion carries the following herbal preparation:
Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides); Aloe vera; Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis); Saffron (Crocus sativus); Flame of forest (Delonix regia); Devil’s Apple (Solanum linnaeanum); Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa); Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia); Turmeric (Curcuma longa); Gotu kola (Centella asiatica); Brahmi (Bacopa moniera); Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans); Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens); Green tea (Camellia sinensis); Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera); Lemon (Citrus limon); Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus); Asoka (Saraca asoca); Shirish bark (Albizzia lebbeck); Sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica); White grapefruit (Citrus paradisi).

How does it work?
Before the use of Air Conditioning devices was introduced in remote Indian villages, and even nowadays, Indian homes in North India used vetiver grass mats hanging on their windows to cool off from stifling summer heat. Freshly woven Vetiver grass mats not only infuse a delightful cooling aroma to the entire house, but the scented molecules actually carry cooling properties. Ayurveda teaches us that, property-wise, vetiver is: sheeta (cooling); snigdha (unctuous or anti-drying); and sugandha (highly aromatic.) Vetiver nurtures the first layer of the skin called udakdhara (water-holding), and penetrates even deeper to the raktadhara (blood layer.) In summer, the increased agni in the environment increases the heat in the blood. That’s why we experience more heat in the body and brain. Vetiver aromatically cools off the blood and with regular use can even cool the muscle and fat tissues.
 
When you combine Vetiver with Aloe Vera, you get double the power!
Aloe Vera is famous world-wide for soothing topical burns. Mostly water soluble, aloe offers refreshing coolness to the first layer of the skin – udakdhara (water holding) – and enhances the skin’s luster and complexion. Aloe is also known for cooling raktadhara – (blood holding layer) – as well. Transdermally, aloe quickly reaches the liver and spleen, and cools off and detoxifies the liver. 
When combining Aloe with Vetiver, the way Vaidya Mishra has done, in his Aloe-Vetiver Summer Lotion, you get a wining combination of cooling and soothing aromatic herbs ideal for use in the hot Summer days. All of Vaidya Mishra’s SVA formulations contain an intelligent pranic blend of specific herbs that work together to enhance eachother’s actions and results in the body. Each herb carries balancing properties as well. Here is a list of what you can expect from each ingredient. 
Aloe Vera: Calms and soothes the skin through its deep cooling effect on rasa (plasma) and rakta (blood.) It is present in a highly active form.

Devil’s Apple: Increases cellular intelligence of the skin to help our skin maintain its youthfulness against climactic and other factors. 
 
Punarnava: Mobilizes and evacuates toxins from the udakdhara layer (water layer) of the skin. 
 
Manjishta: Maintains skin intelligence & pacifies bhrajaka pitta – the governing factor of the skin that can get easily aggravated by overexposure to the sun.
 
Turmeric: Fights against inflammation of the skin created by over-exposure to sunlight
 
Gotu Kola: Supports collagen synthesis
 
Brahmi: Maintains intelligence of the skin
 
Nutmeg: Maintains normal skin pigmentation
 
Mucuna: Supports dopamine production to maintain coordination between mind and skin (prana and vyana)
 
Green Tea: is a great anti-oxidant for the skin. Prevents free-radicals (amavisha) that can result from overexposure to sunlight 
 
Ashwagandha: supports the tactile nerves of the skin
 
Lemon: checks against excess pigmentation caused by sun exposure
 
Indian Sarsaparilla: acidic toxins (amavisha) released from sweat irritates the skin. Indian Sarsaparilla helps clean the sweat and the sweat glands. 
 
Ashoka: maintains the bliss of the heart and thus helps balance bharajak pitta of the skin
 
Shirish bark: provides long-term slow but steady skin detoxification
 
Sensitive Plant: nourishes and repairs the tactile nerves from the damage arising from excess sun exposure
 
Neem: supports the immunity of skin
 
Rosemary: dilates the channels of the skin without heating things up
These ingredients are added to a synergistic base containing: White grapefruit for natural preservation; Organic Coconut for adding a cooling, nurturing, and lubricating layer; Organic Aloe Juice; and Emulsifying wax; in a base of Kosher vegetable glycerin.
 
This is a great lotion to apply at all times, and it can be used by all body types and skin types. Whether you are exposing yourself actively to the sun or not, go ahead and put it on, the high index of solar energy saturating the environment affects your skin health regardless of whether you are in the shade or not. You may be apply this lotion on your body as well as your face. If you already use a facial cream in the morning, you can use it as usual, and then a few hours later start applying this lotion for added coolness as temperatures rise. Apply liberally on areas of the body directly exposed to the sun.

Autumnal SVA Home-Detox 
“The accumulation of toxins in the body is a naturally occurring phenomenon. The body’s metabolic processes yield waste-products on a daily basis. These are known as mala-s: feces, urine, sweat, etc. It is only when these waste-products are allowed to linger, that they become toxic. This is one source of endogenous or internal toxic build-up.” (Vaidya Mishra, 2009)
The transition from one season to another is known as “ritu sandhi” – seasonal transformation – and this is the best time of the year, specially when going from Summer to Autumn, to support the body in a gentle yet effective cleansing protocol or detox. 
Detox, of late, has become the greatest fad in our culture. Drinking or ingesting specific herbal concoctions, coupled with fasting, or other somewhat harsh practices. In this course you will learn that not only can these practices be harmful, but they may cause long term damage, because there is more, so much more to detoxing! Vaidya Mishra designed his detox protocols to aid us off-load toxic accumulation on your own, without having to spend thousands of dollars at detox retreats or centers. SVA detox is done, by you, in the comfort of your own home, safely and effectively. Not only that, but you also learn how not to accumulate more toxic waste by making the right choices on a daily basis. Because there is yet another very important source of internal toxins comes from poor digestion. Replacing toxic foods and habits with healthier ones is easy once you understand the impact they have on your body, heart and mind! In this course, you will learn the “why-how-when” to detox endogenous, or internal, toxic build-up.

“Nowadays, exogenous or externally induced toxins are just as harmful as endogenous toxins. The environment we live in can be highly toxic, starting with the personal care products we use – shampoo, deodorant, etc.; to house-cleaning products; preservatives and chemicals used in dyes; clothing; furniture, etc. Another kind of exogenous toxicity that affects our overall health has to do with EMF overload from cellphones, microwaves, and the overuse of electric devices such as computers, etc.” (Vaidya Mishra, 2009)
Most detox protocols and fads nowadays are unable to guide you into a full body, mind, and heart detox, because they lack the holistic big picture. With this course, you will learn about all 4 possible types of toxic build-up, and how to minimize/eliminate them, and allow your physiology a full reboot. 
You will see how ongoing daily and weekly detox is an essential part of a healthy happy life. In Vaidya Mishra’s words, “proper detox is essential for long-term health and happiness. But proper detox depends on many factors, not just switching to a better diet and exercising! What will I learn in this course? 
“ You will learn how there are different types of toxins that carry a different solubility based on their own chemical composition. You will then see how you can evacuate toxins based on their make-up or type, and which channels or detox pathways to use to eliminate specific toxins in an easy, safe, and effective way. You will also learn how it is not enough to detox, but it is very important to nourish: when you detox you eliminate toxic waste that was occupying space. You need to replace that toxic waste that was eliminated by nurturing molecules or particles. Detox and rejuvenation are the 2 strokes of one protocol. Neither is complete without the other. The self-detox protocol outlined [here] has been practically applied by many SVA practitioners and followers across the United States and Canada, successfully, for the past several years. Now you can also learn how to do your own home-detox, minimize the build-up of future toxic waste, and rejuvenate!” – Vaidya Mishra, 2009
I would like a little more detail on what the course contains? 
  1. 1. Foundational principles of SVA: Detox and Rejuvenation – the “what, how, why, when” of self-administered detox!
  2. 2. Learn how to detox from FOUR (not just one!) type of toxins – this is unique to the SVA lineage and designed by Vaidya using source ayurvedic texts. Just understanding the different categories will guide you in making better daily choices. 
  3. 3. Step by step: learn how to identify, address, and dissolve these four toxins in your own body
  4. 4.The nature and role of pathways or detox channels and how to use them to eliminate specific toxins in a safe, easy and effective way
  5. 5.How to protect the channels of elimination by bind the toxins and safely eliminating - this includes the rasayana/rejuvenation steps necessary after toxic waste elimination
  6. 6. Taking off: learn how to nourish and rejuvenate your body 365 days of the year – empower yourself for optimal balance and bliss!
  7. 7. 365 days/year guidelines for dietary and routine recommendations: welcome the new you!
  8. 8. PLUS: how to incorporate spices and herbs safely via transdermal routes or through your cooking: SVA herbs, chutneys, spice mixe recipes. In addition, learn how to use specific herbs through Transdermal application for safe and effective results.
Can I do the detox again on my own after the course ends? 
YES! The course will teach you how to detox on your own anyday anytime of the year – you will learn the fundamentals that you can apply anyday anytime of the year – as well as guidelines for when it’s best to do it! 
I don’t understand how the course is structured?
The group will be meeting for one session per week (60-90 minutes) to share guidelines and knowledge, but your detox will be conducted daily – with online 24/7 support with SVA experts whenever needed. 
I already have a lot of the SVA formulations needed for the detox. Can I attend only the knowledge sessions without having to purchase the formulations again? 
YES! If you already have some or all of the formulations needed for detox, you may sign up solely for the knowledge part. The fee just for the education sessions and support is $488 for all the sessions payable by September September 4, 2019 – $550 thereafter.
