In today’s world, more than ever, we need the silence of deep meditation to counteract the effect of our continuous exposure to stress and electromagnetic radiation.  If you are spiritually inclined, you probably have discovered a form of meditation or spiritual practice that works for you. Ayurveda is all about supporting the physical body to connect with its subtle self. Vaidya Mishra’s Samadhi Set carries high vibration satwic herbs that help you slip into that experience effortlessly. When applied on the marma points the way he taught us, you can experience the peace and bliss of the heart lotus within minutes – it is all always within us, we just need to quiet our mind and guide it to that experience.
Samadhi Set Supports Yogic Experience
Meditation, or chanting, or recitation of mantras, constitute a yogic exercise – yoga as in connecting the dynamic self with its silent reality – but the body is involved in the process.  In reality, the mind and body cannot be separated.  They are like legs of a table: if you pull one leg the other will come along.  In fact, this is the very means that many meditations adopt:  by settling the mind they are able to slow the body’s breath and heart rate.
It works both ways. We can also support mental relaxation through physical means.  The herbs contained in Vaidya Mishra’s Samadhi Set are chosen specifically to calm the mind, open the heart and relax the senses. Though they are physical roll-ons, applied to the body, they allow the mind the settle more deeply in meditation.
Brahmi for the Transcendent
The original herb, brahmi, which was lauded in the ancient Ayurvedic texts for its unique ability to promote spiritual awakening is now extinct.  However, for many generations, Vaidya Mishra’s family has been using bacopa and gotu kota, which when used together, nearly replicate the powerful energy of the ancient brahmi. When we say brahmi here, it refers to the combination of these two herbs.
Brahmi contains lots of vibrational energy which is both calming and awakening to the mind.  When used in transdermal form, brahmi is delivered directly into the blood stream, without having to go through the liver (which is often corrupt with toxins).  When non-corrupted brahmi reaches the brain, it allows the mind to fully receive the light of the soul which comes to it through the heart.
In Shaka Vansya Ayurveda, the soul is likened to a gem, which becomes attached to the physical heart by the glue of ojas.  The light of the gem, or sattwa, shines through the heart to the mind.  The petals of the lotus of the heart must be open to allow the light of the gem to reach the mind, and the physical brain must be well fed and well balanced to receive the light.  We experience spiritual awakening when the light of the gem is experienced consciously, with an awake mind, as the witness. That’s the experience, as a witness, of own reality, brahmi-hood – universal bliss and peace.
Apply brahmi to the wrists (pulses) before meditation.
Blossom the Lotus in your Heart
If the mind is balanced and well fed it can receive the light of the gem.  Brahmi helps the mind to become the perfect receptacle for the light of the soul.  However, if the heart is closed, no preparation of the mind will be sufficient to give enlightenment.
Good meditation depends on an open heart.  If the petals of the lotus of the emotional heart are closed, there is no way for the light of the soul to reach the mind. Vaidya Mishra has created two transdermal roll-ons to open the heart lotus:  Ashoka transdermal roll-on and Arjuna transdermal roll-on.  You can choose the one that is right for you.
Ashoka is a powerful tree used in Ayurveda for millennia.  It’s special property, or prabhava, is to remove grief from the heart.  Even traces of old grief in the heart can keep the heart lotus partially closed, preventing good experience in meditation.
Arjuna is the the number one herb for the heart in Ayurveda.  It gives both emotional and physical support and strength to the heart and is a rasayana (gives long life) for the heart.  Do not use it if you have a pacemaker, as it is a mild cardiac stimulant.
For both Arjuna and Ashoka, apply the creams to the tala hridaya marma points in the center of each palm and soles of the foot.  These four marma points (sensitive vibrational points in the body) are directly connected to the heart by nadis (vibrational channels) in the body.  When you apply these powerful herbs for the heart on the marma points of the heart, you will feel the heart lotus open almost instantly.  The roll-ons then give a sustained delivery throughout the meditation.
Calm the Senses With Tulsi
We have seen that both an open heart and a healthy, balanced mind are essential for good meditation.
It is also essential that the senses act in a balanced way when one wishes to meditate because the senses, which are often compared to wild horses, can quickly bring the mind’s attention away from the light of consciousness to the objects of the senses.  Without proper balance, the senses will put the chariot easily in the ditch.
Tulsi has a unique prabhava (special property) of balancing the senses.  With the use of tulsi, the senses do not easily overwhelm the mind, and this contributes to good meditation.  Vaidya Mishra’s Tulsi Transdermal Roll-on delivers the prabhava of tulsi and its powerful effect for deepening meditation.  This effect is enhanced by the fact that the tulsi roll-on is applied to the sthapana marma point between the eyebrows-the marma point which controls the senses.
Why Super Sport ?
SuperSport is formulated to help support vibrational and physical channels. It can be used by and for all who would like to or have a physical schedule and need to support their muscle tissue. SuperSport helps release accumulated toxins in the muscle tissue that can result in muscle tightness or stiffness.

The Traveller’s Samadhi Set consists of three herbalized roll-ons (or transdermal creams) that are applied on specific marma points (with the option to choose between Arjuna and Ashoka) to support and enhance yogic experiences-coordinated functioning between mind, body, heart and soul.
Brahmi Roll-on: co-ordinates between dhi dritti and smritti, the different aspects of the intelect.
Arjuna Roll-on: supports the physical and emotional heart and gives strenght to fight against emotional challenges.
Ashoka Roll-on: supports the release of grief (from a-shoka-no shoka/grief)
Tulsi Roll-on: balances/enhances the coordination between Satya buddhi and the mano buddhi (spirit and mind).

Why is Karela, aka Bitter Gourd or Bitter Melon, so good for you?
A SVA perspective backed by Science
One thing that’s especially rewarding for me is how we can now use our modern research methods to verify ancient Ayurvedic wisdom.

This is especially true when it comes to identifying the actions of this unique vegetable, bitter gourd, which can be used as a food or medicine.

Bitter gourd has a reputation as being perhaps the best vegetable for treating Type 2 diabetes.  Now we know that it contains three active substances which can lower blood sugar:  charantin, vicine and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptide-p.

And check this out:  science defines “Charantin” as “a chemical substance obtained from the Asian bitter melon (Momordica charantia), reputed to be responsible for the hypoglycemic properties of those plants. It was identified by Lolitkar and Rao in 1960.” This was amazing to me that a word was created based on an active ingredient found in bitter melon!

Bitter melon also contains a lectin that reduces blood sugar by suppressing appetite, much like the effects of insulin in the brain. It is this lectin that is thought to be a major factor behind the blood sugar lowering effect which occurs after consuming it.

Sidenote:  A Little Bit About Lectins
Lectins are sugar-binding plant proteins that attach to cell membranes. They are found in most plant foods and are proinflammatory, immunotoxic, neurotoxic and cytotoxic. Some lectins may also increase the thickness of the blood and can interfere with gene expression and disrupt endocrine function. And they can contribute to leaky gut by binding to receptor sites on your intestinal cell walls, interfering with the absorption of nutrients from the intestines into the blood stream. Lectins are strongly associated with autoimmune disorders. They can even mimic proteins in your thyroid gland or joint spaces, causing your body to attack your thyroid and contribute to rheumatoid arthritis.  This occurs as they penetrate the gut wall, eliciting very strong immune responses.

Wait – what?  Does this mean that vegetables are bad for you?  Well, Vaidya Mishra once told me this:  “The ancient rishis stated that all vegetables contain compounds that are bad for you – but if you cook them they would evaporate out, making them good for you.”

As usual, modern medicine is proving this quote correct. These nasty little lectins are found throughout an otherwise healthy diet, in the fibers of all the fruits, vegetables, grains and the beans we love. But instead of avoiding these foods, we can temper their effects through proper prepping and…you guessed it, just as Vaidya said…by cooking these foods.

Also, soaking the legumes and grains overnight and discarding the water used for soaking will eliminate the lectins. This is why the ancient doctors said to soak and then peel the almonds, as the skin of the almonds contain high amounts of lectins.

Back to Bitter Melon
A January 2011 article published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology showed that a 2,000 mg daily dose of bitter melon reduced blood glucose levels similar to metformin. It also protects pancreatic beta cells (where insulin is made) and stabilizes insulin levels.

And it is also amazing to me that Sloan Kettering posts the benefits of eating bitter melon on their website. They claim that modern research shows that the substances in bitter melon act in the same way as insulin, by increasing the entry of glucose into the cells and promoting its processing and storage in the liver, muscle and fat. They also state that bitter melon prevents the conversion of stored nutrients to glucose and the release of this glucose into the blood, thus keeping the blood sugar within normal limits. In fact reductions in blood sugar after taking bitter melon can be seen quickly –  as soon as 30 minutes – with the greatest reduction occurring at four hours and lasting for 12 hours.

Sloan Kettering also states that bitter melon extracts were shown to kill leukemia cells in the laboratory and slow the growth of breast cancer in mice. And a University of Colorado study found that over time bitter melon actually resulted in a 64% reduction in pancreatic tumor size.

In addition, bitter melon is one of the best vegetables for treating obesity as it can break down old fat cells and prevent the formation of new ones!  It does this by breaking down fat into free fatty acids (body fat is chemically composed of connected chains of fatty acids), and on top of that it lowers the levels of enzymes required for the formation of new fat.

Here’s other ways it can help you lose weight:

  1. It stimulates the flow of bile out of the gallbladder which helps to metabolize and break down the fats you eat.
  2. It stimulates the liver to secrete its bile, which aids in breaking down fat for you to burn as energy. This process is usually not working well enough in people who are overweight or obese.
  3. It also activates a protein called “AMPK” which modulates the release of insulin, enables glucose uptake by all the cells, including the muscles, inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol and triglycerides, and helps burn fat.

Basically what this means is that it eliminates the root causes of obesity!

In fact, many researchers have shown significant decreases in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol and increases in HDL cholesterol with the consumption of bitter melon. This would make sense since bitter melon is one of the best foods for supporting liver function.  It is one of the many jobs of the liver to keep triglycerides and cholesterol in check (as well as blood sugar).

Bitter melon has been shown to have a positive effect on hemorrhoids. Again, this is due to its effects on liver function. If the liver gets congested or overheated, the veinous blood flow to the liver can back up, creating hemorrhoids.

As you can see, many of the benefits of bitter melon come from its effects on the liver. And according to Ayurveda, the liver is a pitta organ (ranjaka pitta), containing five digestive fires, which gives it a great tendency to overheat. A bitter taste is one of the best tastes to cool down and pacify pitta. Thus, its bitter taste aids the liver in all its functions.

The Ancient texts also stated that the skin can reveal the cleanliness of the liver and blood. Thus bitter melon can actually prove the look of your skin, reducing redness soothing acne, psoriasis and eczema, and create a glowing look due to its effects on clearing toxins from the liver and blood.

And finally, bitter melon is rich in beta carotene and Vitamin A, helping you to ward off problems like cataracts and macular degeneration, and improving vision.

If you can overcome your initial instinct to spit it out, over time, you will probably acquire a taste for bitter gourd, and your liver will thank you for it!

Warning

Karela can have an immediate impact for some people, so if you are known to have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia – feeling light headed, experiencing undue fatigue, or faintness) make sure to monitor your blood sugar levels when eating karela.
DO NOT consume raw karela juice. There is a new fad, particularly amongst members of the Indian community, and a new line of products being promoted by some ayurvedic companies from India, that pushes people to drink the juice of specific vegetables for detox and health. Amongst them is also karela juice.
Vaidya Mishra was very clear in teaching us that anything that impacts the liver and that has to be processed by the liver should be accompanied by a fatty medium (ghee is the best fatty medium, olive oil the next). Consuming liver detoxing ingredients without considering the role of the detox organs can result in greater ill-health.
An exception to this are transdermal creams and Herbal Memory Nectar drops that were specially formulated to alleviate stress and strain for the detox organs (liver, kidneys, etc) – they capture the molecular pranic intelligence of the herbs. They are ok to consume in water as a medium, or in the cream base they come with.

Karela Tapenade Recipe + Video

Karela is a very bitter vegetable that is loaded with healing properties for the human physiology as it is Tikt (bitter), Katu (pungent), Kashai (astringent – has a lot of Marut or space element). Due to these properties it helps counteract the heavy, clogging and ama-genic properties of sugar or high carb foods. But it is easier to speak ab

out incorporating karela into our diet than actually doing it! Its bitter taste is not alwaysdesirable, even if we try to mask it one way or another. Indian culture, and specially Ayurveda, has many recipes, but in Vaidya Mishra’s SVA Kitchen, a new recipe was created, one that has a modern twist to satisfy our western palates as well. This recipe is as tasty as it is easy and we know it is going to please your family and friends with its bitter, sour, salty flavors. You can also improvise on the presentation – you can make small triangles out of fresh rolled roti-s or flatbreads and spread the Karela Tapenade on top and garnish either with fresh cilantro or toasted powder coriander.

Karela Tapenade Recipe

(serves 4 or 2 very hungry karela loving people! )
4 oz Karela (weight by weight) chopped rough
1 tsp Mum’s ghee
1/2 tsp Olive Oil
1 tsp SVA Turmeric
1 Tbsp SVA Coriander seeds
1/2 tsp Soma Salt
1/ tsp Mum’s Masala
2 Green Thai chillies (optional)
1 small chunk of fresh ginger (optional)
3/4 cup water
2 limes
fresh cilantro leaves for garnish (optional)
fresh toasted and ground coriander powder (optional)

Directions:
Add the karela, the ghee, the turmeric, the coriander, the salt, the olive oil, and the water (plus the chillies and ginger if using any) in a pot and cook over slow to medium fire until the karela is fully cooked.
Turn off the heat and add the lime juice. Add the whole mixture into a blender and blend down to a smooth paste (add some more water if needed).
In a separate pan, warm 1/2 tsp of Mum’s Ghee and add 1 tsp Mum’s Masala. After 20-30 seconds pour over the blended mixture.
Next you can choose to put your Tapenade in a plate and decorate it with suggested garnishes or you can just serve it in a bowl.
Try this after heavy sugary meals and let us know how you felt!
Enjoy!

Should You Vaccinate Against the Flu or Not? Informed Decision-Making with Dr Teitelbaum

Flu season is in full gear! We are currently in the middle of flu season and many people are wondering if they should hunker down and get a flu shot.  Many have heard some negative things about the shot and are expressing concerns about some possible side effects, and would like me to give them some information so they can decide what they should do.

Before we begin our discussion, I do want to make it clear that it is totally up to you to decide which way to go.  All I can do is present the pros and cons of both sides. You do what makes the most sense to you and what you feel most comfortable doing.

So here goes: the flu is a virus, thus there are no antibiotics you can take once you get it, since antibiotics only kill bacteria. Modern medicine has some medications to ward off the symptoms of the flu, such as decongestants, cough syrups, an antiviral drug, analgesics, and other anti-inflammatory pain relievers, but treatment consists primarily of rest and plenty of fluids to let the body fight the infection on its own.

How Does A Flu Shot Work?

Flu shots are given to prevent infection by helping the body develop antibodies to the flu virus that is going around that year. Having said that…it is also good to know the other side of the argument:

First, the flu vaccine is far from perfect as it is only about 60% effective, and some years, such as this one, even much less.

Second, the flu shot does contain mercury, which in the long run can actually weaken your immune system, making you even more susceptible to getting the flu in the future.  Keep in mind – the immune system consists of 1) the friendly bacteria in the gut – which are the first line of defense for incoming cold and flu viruses, which are in every breath we take; 2) the liver – which makes antibodies to diseases; and 3) the bone marrow – where most of the immune system cells are made – white and red blood cells and platelets.

From Ayurveda, we have learnt that mercury, one of the ingredients in the flu shot, is excessively hot by nature, so much so that it burns the friendly bacteria immediately after the shot is given. It also heats the liver, disrupting its normal function, and goes directly into the bone marrow due to its sharp piercing properties.  Keep in mind that toxins accumulating in the bone marrow can trigger an autoimmune disease, which is why we ayurvedically explain that autoimmune diseases such as Guillain-Barre (and others) can occur after receiving a flu shot.

The body contains seven tissues (or dhatus) which we recognize in Ayurveda:  rasa, rakta, mamsa, meda, asthi, majja and shukra.  These are the Sanskrit names. In English they are: the blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and reproductive fluids. There are gaps in between these seven tissues so that toxins cannot make their way into the bone marrow directly. Those gaps act as a filtering defense system, but also metabolize the incoming materials from one tissue to the next.We can say that it is Nature’s way of protecting us from developing autoimmune diseases and cancer by protecting and shielding the bone marrow in order to prevent a build up of toxins there.

HOWEVER, these very hot, piercing elements, such as mercury, which speedily bypass and penetrate through all the barriers, go directly into the bone marrow, wreaking havoc there.

What’s in your Flu Shot?

According to the CDC, here is a list of all the ingredients in a flu shot:  four or five different flu strains, formaldehyde, aluminum, gelatin, mercury, chicken egg proteins, and antibiotics.

Why is formaldehyde used in the flu shot?  It is included because it is needed to deactivate the virus they are injecting into you to prevent it from actually giving you the flu, and also to kill any other toxins in the flu shot, preventing you from getting sick from them. (Please do keep in mind that formaldehyde itself is both toxic and deadly).

Why is aluminum used in the flu vaccine?  Aluminum is considered an adjuvant to boost your immune system to respond to the virus they are injecting into you, which is one of the reasons many people will develop an autoimmune disease after their flu shot, as their immune system is synthetically pushed beyond its normal function. Adjuvants are also used to prevent sickness from the diseases after receiving the shot. Aluminum is the most common adjuvant used in vaccines. (Keep this in mind as well: it is a potent neurotoxin, and has repeatedly been shown in numerous studies to cause brain damage, especially Alzheimer’s).

Why is Thimerosal (mercury) part of the flu vaccine?  Because it keeps bacteria and fungi from growing in the vaccine which can otherwise happen when a syringe is in a vial.  No need for a side note here as we just mentioned how deadly mercury is – in fact it is considered to be THE most deadly compound known to mankind.

Why are eggs in the flu shot?  The flu virus needs somewhere to grow before it’s in the vaccine. The virus copies itself while in fertilized chicken eggs, and then it is separated from the egg and is now ready for vaccination. But sometimes egg protein remains in the virus after the process, which could be a problem for those allergic to eggs, or those who are strict vegetarians.  Also, it is easy for infection to grow in the eggs, which is why antibiotics (neomycin) are included in the flu shot, as they keep bacteria from getting into the eggs, which aren’t sterile.

Here are a few other interesting facts to help you make a decision on which way to help you prevent and/or treat the flu:

1.      The latest research in the Journal of Virology found that the seasonal flu vaccine may weaken children’s immune systems and potentially increase their chances of catching other influenza viruses (see below).

2.    Children who did not receive a flu shot naturally built up more antibodies across a wider variety of influenza strains compared to vaccinated children.

3.    There are many unanswered questions about whether or not the flu shot is safe and effective as more studies are published showing it is neither.

4.    It is primarily the state of your health and immune system that determines whether or not you will get sick from being exposed to viral or bacterial organisms associated with diseases like colds and flus. Healthy lifestyle choices as indicated here will boost your immunity, whereas vaccinations can be immune-suppressing.

Perhaps the study which alarmed me the most regarding the flu shot was from Bodewes R., et al., Journal of Virology, Volume 85, August 31, 2011, entitled, “Annual vaccination against influenza virus hampers development of virus-specific T cell immunity in children.”

Here is a brief quote from the article, “Our results indicate that annual influenza vaccination is effective against seasonal influenza but hampers the development of virus-specific T cell responses. The consequences of these findings are discussed in the light of the development of protective immunity to seasonal and future pandemic influenza viruses.”

Let me translate: There are two types of immune system cells – the B cells (so-called because they develop in the bone marrow) which produce antibodies, and the T cells (which develop in the thymus gland) which recognize and kill virus-infected cells. And some T cells help the B cells make antibodies to fight infections.

It is your T cells which connect to viruses on the outside of infected cells and kill them. Thus they find and destroy infected cells that have been turned into virus-making factories.

The alarming thing about this article is that it demonstrates once and for all that the flu shot can actually suppress the development of these extremely important T cells. What this means is that while yes, by receiving a flu shot, you (or your child) may not get the flu this year (although many, many of my patients come down with the flu after receiving one), in the long run you may seriously disable your immune system in the future, making it less effective in warding off colds and flus.

This is the modern medical model of how to prevent the flu.  Let’s switch now to a somewhat less toxic approach used in SVA to both prevent and treat symptoms of the flu.

SVA Tips and Guidelines to Protect Against the Flu

First, now that you know the three parts of the immune system, keep them in good working order by either taking a good probiotic such as Natren’s probiotics or making good homemade yogurt from Natren’s yogurt starter and then making lassi or buttermilk to keep your friendly bacteria in good shape. Be careful with having milk and milk products in the Winter time. Always add some spice mixture, or fresh ginger if you can handle and like it, to help you digest milk products and yoghurt fully. Vaidya’s Mom’s Masala is pretoasted and can be added to your lassi (buttermilk).

Next, take very good care of your liver, which means watch all the food you eat, the pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals you take, the skin care products you use, as well as your exposure to pesticides, heavy metals and air pollution, as the liver has to clear the body of all these toxins. Seek out advice from an SVA practitioner to see if you need any of our herbs which can support the liver in all its functions.

Support your bone marrow through the use of moringa drops, tea or powder, or you can actually cook with moringa leaves and/or drumstick if you can find them (usually available in Indian markets). In addition, guduchi is the best herb for cleaning the bone marrow – available in drops, transdermal creams, tablets and guduchi satwa powder, if your liver is too hot to handle guduchi leaf tablets. Just follow the directions on the bottles for proper dosage.

Zinc can dismantle cold or flu viruses, but it must be burnt repeatedly into an ash, called a bhasma, for best absorption and assimilation into the cells. We have two strengths of zinc (called “Yasad Bhasma”), regular and Maha (which is a higher potency) drops. Put five drops in one cup of alkaline spring water a day and drink it down (only once a day is necessary).

Melt 1 tbs ghee, add 1 tsp of dried ground turmeric and saute it over a low heat for a couple of minutes to allow the turmeric to infuse into the ghee. Then pour this on your food 2-3 times a day. Turmeric can also kill viruses and bacteria upon contact. This is recommended when you actually have the flu or a cold to kill the virus. Then go back to your regular use of turmeric after the infection is gone.

Some people recommend simmering turmeric in milk at bedtime for a few minutes to ward off infections. Add 2 pinches to your cup of milk and let simmer. Sip slowly after it cools down.

Immuno Support capsules can be taken, one after breakfast and one after dinner, if you choose to take an herbal route. These are various Ayurvedic herbs to boost your immune system to prevent a cold or a flu. Or you could choose immune support drops, 3 drops a day in 24 oz room temperature spring water, sipped slowly throughout the day.

Amla berry has 20 times more vitamin C than an orange, yet turns alkaline when it comes into the body, and has been used to ward off colds and flus for centuries. This is available in tablet (two tablets a day) or drop form (3 drops a day) as well.

Drink 1/2 cup pomegranate juice diluted with 1/2 cup spring water with 1 tsp raw honey added to it to fight cold and flu viruses.

For coughs, there are numerous herbs from Boswellia drops to fight inflammation in the lungs to Kantakari cough syrup (not for children under 12) to kantakari drops (for all age groups). Kantakari is a bronchodilator, and works to open up the bronchial tubes if you are having difficulty breathing.

And finally, as always, eat a healthy diet and go to bed early, to allow for optimum immune function. By using all these tools, you will be better prepared to both prevent and treat any cold or flu symptoms that might come your way this winter/spring.

Hope this helped you in making your decision!

Understanding the Flu and What you Can Do –

from the SVA Perspective

Bugs alone can’t make us sick! What makes us fall into trouble? There are billions of microbes floating within and without us all the time.  It can’t be just the bugs or we’d be sick all the time – that’s if we survived their fatal attacks to start with! Our immune system has perfected the art of isolating harmful bacteria and viruses and controls them so they cannot do us harm. We can survive in a toxic environment and allow them to live as well.  As long as we maintain ayurvedic balance, our immune system does its work protecting us and we are and remain healthy.

Vaidya Mishra helped us understand the ayurvedic key to balanced health through the phenomenon of ‘field and seed’ theory: a beej (seed) planted in an infertile bhumi (field, or land) will not sprout. This applies to beneficial and toxic seeds. So by extending the logic, harmful microbes (seeds) will not sprout and root (cause imbalances and sickness) in a body (field) not fertile (non-supportive) for harmful microbes to survive and multiply.

How/Why Do We Get Sick in SVA Terms?

 A Compromised Immune System

Excessive work, late nights, daytime sleep, stress, channel clogging food, low digestive fire and cold weather all contribute to weak immunity. When immunity is compromised, the bugs that would be neutralized as soon as they set foot inside the body end up multiplying… and we get the flu symptoms – achy muscles, congestion, sore throat, fever.

All of these factors that compromise our immunity ultimately boil down to two things: shrinking or blocking of the body’s channels and, you guessed it,  poor digestion! Poor routine and stress shrink the nadis (vibrational channels). Cold weather shrinks the shrotas (physical channels). Low digestive fire and/or bad food result in ama (toxins) which clog the shrotas.

When the channels are shrunken and clogged, ama (partially digested food) gets stuck in the channels and turns to amavisha (poison ama) due to fermentation. Amavisha is a highly acidic toxic material which sparks an inflammatory reaction. The immune system then tries to ‘put out the fires’ caused by amavisha and gets spread too thin to handle the normal invaders which enter our bodies all the time.

Any kind of toxin always makes the body fertile for pathogens.  Ayurveda describes this process with the aforesaid siddhanta (theory) of bhumi (land) and beej (seed).  A toxic body (land) becomes fertile ground for pathogens (seeds) to grow and further weaken their host.

Also, when the channels are blocked, nourishment circulating in the blood cannot reach all tissues effectively, thereby weakening them. And, waste products cannot get out of the tissues and be carried away by the blood as efficiently, if at all.  The result is acidification in the tissues. When invading microbes enter the body, they find a perfect growing environment with little resistance from the weakened tissues.

Boost Your Natural Immunity

Your body knows how to defend itself against invaders. It was born knowing.

It just can’t function properly when it’s loaded down with toxins, undigested food, and blocked channels.

If you want to boost your immunity, the first step should be to look at your routine and diet. Do you go to bed early?  When you stay up late you burn your body’s soma (cooling, nourishing intelligence of nature) and you don’t receive the soma that you would normally get when you sleep. This contributes to a build-up of acid in the body and further weakening of the immune system.

Are you stressed? Everyone knows that stress suppresses immunity.  Be responsible. Do you really have to do it all?  There are many ways to reduce stress… find the ones that work for you and do them.

Do you spend too much time on the computer? EMF shrinks the nadis (vibrational channels) and blocks the normal flow of prana in the body.  This can lead to head pressure, tension, and generalized pain anywhere in the body.  A lack of normal pranic flow also affects the agnis (digestion and metabolism) contributing to more ama, amavisha, and weak immunity.

What foods do you eat regularly? Try to avoid tomato, potato, bell pepper, eggplant, onion, garlic, winter squashes, soy, large beans, and bananas.  These foods either block or corrupt the body’s vibrational and physical channels, which automatically lowers immunity.  Cook with good spices, so that your food is satisfying and you don’t end up overeating and putting out your digestive fire.

Do you have slow digestion? Try eating food that is light and easily digested. Instead of consuming large portions of food, eat smaller portions more frequently.  Use spices in cooking or pre-toasted spices sprinkled on your food.  The Ayurvedic texts say that when agni (digestive and metabolic fires) are balanced no disease can occur.

First Time in Ayurvedic History A Facial Cream with Maha Rasayana Abhrak Bhasma

Abhrak Bhasma is an ayurvedic Maha Rasayana. A supremely rejuvenating substance that requires years to make through the controlled process of the repeated ‘burnings’ of mica – a shiny silicate mineral with a layered structure, found as minute scales in granite and other rocks, or as crystals. In Ayurveda, a very special type of mica is used to make the bhasma – black mica,  called “krishnabhr.”
Vaidya Mishra’s Abhrak Facial Cream contains extremely high potency Abhrak – Sahasra Puti: that means 1000 fold.  Sahasra means one thousand.  Made by one thousand steps of repeated burnings. The burning process is a massive purification process, as each time the mica gets burnt, it is processed with different herbs, and burnt over and over again one thousand times. In this process of making the ash, or the bhasma, the mica interacts with the rejuvenating herbs so this bhasma carries the intelligence of those herbs known for its rejuvenative properties for the cellular system, nourishing the skin by directly enhancing the intelligence of the gaps (sandhis) that govern the transformational vibrational energy of all seven layers of the skin.
By enhancing the ultimate vibrational energy flowing through gaps, the Abhrak Bhasma Facial Cream immediately increases the Prabha (glow of the aura) of the skin. You can choose between a cream that has Abhrak Bhasma and Rose or Abhrak Bhasma and Jasmine. Abhrak Bhasma is a rare item highly prized for its overall health supporting properties. It had heretofore never been used as an ingredient in a facial cream. With Vaidya’s unique SVA formulations, now you can enjoy the age-defying properties of Abhrak in your daily facial care protocol.
Abhrak Bhasma, on its own is a maha rasayana in Ayurveda, because it can travel up to the sixth level of the skin and rejuvenate all the layers, resetting their natural metabolic intelligence – the intelligence of transformation between the gaps of the skin. In addition, however, Abhrak Bhasma Sahastra Puti is also the fastest and most efficient yogvahi – a catalyst carrier. What does this mean? It means that it has the ability to carry along any herbs that accompany it, and make sure that the properties of those herbs are activated and put to use. So when Abhrak Bhasma is combined with the age-defying herbs, all the macromolecules of all the herbs in this cream get delivered faster and more effectively to all the 6, or 7 (depending on whether we follow the Charak Samhita or the Susrut Samhita) layers of the skin resulting in immediate nourishment and cleansing.
Why Abhrak with Rose?
Did you know why emotional stress directly impacts the glow and health of your skin? When your emotions are on the rocks, your sadhak pitta and sadhak agni go off. This impacts all your other pitta subdoshas, stripping your skin of its luster, and slowing down its healthy metabolism. If you are under constant emotional stress, and your skin looks dull and flaky, no external application will help unless it address the heart of the matter, your emotions.
In the summertime, even if things are smooth and sailing well,
But you can fix this if you are using a prana-infused cream that contains Rose! Transdermal Rose can uplift the emotions by balancing sadhak pitta and sadhak agni right away- the sub- doshas and the flame that govern the emotional heart. Rose strengthens the emotional heart so it can better handle emotional challenges. Not only does rose pacify sadhak pitta – even as it balances sadhak agni – it also carries a “somnasya jana” or bliss-enhancing property. All sub-doshas are inter-connected. Any of Vaidya’s creams can be custom-ordered containing 100% pure and organic Rose Absolute. If you are experiencing emotional challenges right now, then you should go with the Rose Aroma.
What’s in Facial Cream, and Why is it There?

Memories and Images from Vaidya’s new Prana Center Inauguration and Birthday Celebration

Thank you to ALL who joined us in person and via live webstreaming. We had a grand time on Saturday August 5, 2017, celebrating Vaidya’s new Prana Center, as well as his birthday. We had a full program and we were live on Facebook for those of you who were following us. SVA doctors and experts shared memories and anecdotes with Vaidya Mishra – Drs. Marianne Teitelbaum, Mark Vinick, Kimberly Hoffman, in addition to dear friend Jerry Jarvis, as well as Lorna Cheng – the SVA guru of the local Chinese community in Southern California. We wanted to keep going, reminiscing about Vaidya and all the beautiful memories he has given us, however, the exquisite Shakti Dance Company, under the expert directorship of Mrs. Viji Prakash, and her daughter, Mythili Prakash, were awaiting to delight us with powerful dances. They performed a dance offered to Ganesha, and to Devi Shakti.
Here’s a clip of the celebratory dances:

We also had a SVA feast – of course! We served Vaidya’s favorite recipe, made from scratch by his wife just the way he loved it: sprouted Mung Beans with home-made paneer, Raisins and Cashews, with Mom’s Masala and Mom’s Ghee, as well as home-made yoghurt from raw milk. After wishing Vaidya plentiful love we had lots of cake with Pitta Tea, and Lime Water made with  his Sugar-Free Sweet Nectars!
The Prana Center now has an on-site boutique with all of Vaidya’s unique formulations on display, as well as his printed and audio and audiovisual educational materials. In addition, we also carry gift items such as silk and wool shawls, and gift items.
Stop by to check it all out for yourself!
We will very soon be announcing our schedule for on-site SV ayurvedic treatments, services, and workshops. Stay tuned!
And once more: thank you for supporting and celebrating Vaidya’s New Prana Center with us, and helping us carry on his SVA legacy. We look forward to a bright SVA future…
Our GoFundme account campaign will conclude soon. If you have not made a donation and would like to do so, now would be a good time!
a heartfelt THANK YOU to all who have donated recently – online or privately. The campaign is still open and accepting donations. Please help Vaidya’s SVA legacy stay alive and flourish in these critical days by making a donation:

Ayurvedic Formulations for Acne-Free Skin

Acne vs SVA: Effective and Permanent Protocols

Vaidya’s specialty was Dermatology. Having said that, he still treated the patient holistically, first testing for imbalances in their pulse and then addressing these imbalances through the use of herbs, dietary recommendations and changes in their daily routine habits.

The skin is an organ of elimination, the largest organ in the body. “It is only doing its job,” he would tell patients with skin conditions. “You are lucky the toxins are coming out through the skin — if they stayed inside they could have roamed to the brain, creating Alzheimer’s there or the liver, creating cancer there. But you are lucky they are coming out.”

The point is, he would teach me, to allow the detox process of the skin to continue, but many things could be done to alleviate the condition at the same time.

The first thing he taught me was to direct the toxins away from the skin and into the urine by making a very dilute tea, 1 pinch of whole coriander seed steeped in one quart of boiled water (usually given in a one-quart stainless steel thermos). Sip on that slowly for four hours, then discard the unused portion and start fresh the next day.

Next, he would bind the toxins and direct them into the bowel movement, using various foods such as taro root, okra, arrowroot, barley (if not gluten sensitive). These foods have the capability of taking the toxins out through the bowel movement and should be eaten throughout the week.

Each patient is individual, so you must evaluate their pulse and treat whatever imbalances you would find there: if the channels were clogged, inflamed or shrunken, you must fix them, for example. If the liver is overheated it must be cooled down with the use of DGL cream down the spine and on the liver (below the ribs on the right) twice a day.  Bhumi amla drops are also great for cooling an overheated liver.

The use of yasad bhasma (zinc) might also be indicated (again each patient must be evaluated individually). Zinc is good for killing the infection in the pores of the skin.

Once we evaluate all possible parameters of that person’s health, THEN we can use the actual herbal formulas recommended for acne, in this case: the Semal Plus Products.  Semal is the herb used primarily for acne. However, if we took the modern medical model of prescribing semal and ignored the other factors which were just described, our protocol would work minimally, if at all. Therefore, a good rule of thumb to always remember is to treat the patient holistically, resisting the temptation to ask which remedy is used for which condition and use that only.
Semal drops can be given, two to three drops in a liter of alkaline spring water, sipped throughout the day. And Semal Plus Clay can be applied to the areas affected by acne, leave it on for about 10 minutes to pull out the toxins. Wash it off with Turmeric Soap (Detox or Neem Soap could be used as well). Then apply Semal Plus Lotion to the same area and leave it in.

If the patient is old enough (18 years or older), you can teach them the cleansing procedures Vaidya has taught us either in his blogs, newsletters and detox booklet. These are daily, weekly and seasonal cleanses using mostly foods and dahls, such as kulthi lentils, to remove impurities from the body. As always we do not recommend fasting, since it heats the liver, ultimately backfiring on the patient. And we do not recommend herbs such as milk thistle, which also heat the liver and imbalance it.

By following these guidelines, usually the acne will recede over time. This approach is much better than longterm use of antibiotics, which can damage one’s immune system, or the use of acne drugs which get stored in the bone marrow, affecting not only the patient, but their offspring too, for years to come.
