CASE HISTORY: Subclinical Hypothyroidism and Intractable Nerve Pain Due to a Bulging Disc
This patient presented with two very basic problems. She was in severe pain after a couple of car accidents in which she suffered spinal misalignments creating bulging discs which were then pressing on nerves going both down her legs and arms. And, what I see on a daily basis in my practice, she was experiencing subclinical hypothyroidism without even knowing it.
She was unable to perform her normal duties for months. Like any Chiropractor, I checked for misalignments in the spine and gently worked on the bones, muscles and ligaments to realign everything, thus taking the pressure off both the discs and nerves.
Next, I gave her Healthy Joints Plus which contains Shringh Bhasma, which is deer antler velvet. This is the alive version of its synthetic cousin sold in the pharmacies as “glucosamine chondroitin.” This is what the discs are composed of, thus by taking this remedy, it helped to strengthen her discs so they would no longer bulge onto her nerves going down her arms and legs.
The Healthy Joints Plus also contains boswellia, whose synthetic toxic cousin is prednisone, or steroids. Thus, this one formula contains both the anti-inflammatory effects of the boswellia combined with the disc (and other cartilage in all the joints) strengthening qualities of the shringh bhasma. Vaidya was so smart to make this formula! It has saved so many of my patients suffering from joint pain.
Since she had shooting pain down both her arms and legs I had her rub Maha Sensitive Plant Cream down along the course of the nerves wherever the nerve pain was and she took Sensitive Plant drops in water every 6 hours.
In no time she was in tears, but this time they were tears of joy! She couldn’t believe that she had suffered for the past few years when she could have easily had her pain relieved in just a couple of months! And, being a nurse, she was amazed that the herbs worked better than all the mind-numbing pain killers she had taken previously, because they were actually fixing things, not just taking away the pain, leaving the underlying problem to foment.
Since I am always in the habit of treating the whole person, I did find that she had weakness in her thyroid gland and wanted to treat that. She was reluctant at first because, again, as a nurse, she regularly had blood work and repeatedly had her thyroid checked, which always came back within normal limits. She told me she had tried on several occasions in the past to lose weight, but was never successful, and I could tell she didn’t take me that seriously when I told her she needed some herbs to support her thyroid.
I explained the 6 stages of a disease process, where the first two stages the physiology is going out of balance, but there are no symptoms yet. But by the third and fourth stages you can get symptoms, but there is no disease. However, if you let the imbalances progress further, by the fifth and sixth stages you can come down with a disease. I also told here that mainstream medical doctors are trained to diagnose and treat disease, so they could be missing this weakness in her thyroid, and the fact that her blood work showed normal thyroid function only meant that they couldn’t find it yet on their testing since she was probably only in the third and fourth stages of thyroid weakness and it hadn’t blossomed yet into a full-blown diseased thyroid.
We have numerous remedies to support the thyroid gland — transdermally we have Magnesium Roll-on or Cream, Ashwagandha Cream and Vitamin D. We also have Soma Shakti tablets if the person’s liver can handle it, if it isn’t overheated (I usually find many people are not candidates to take this powerful remedy which is so heating due to its mineral pitch content. Vaidya tried to make it less heating by putting the mineral pitch as the last ingredient (the ancient formulas had it as the first ingredient), but the modern patient has so many acidic chemical toxins circulating through the liver that this remedy isn’t tolerated as well with most patients nowadays.
This is when we resort to the Multimineral Support Drops and the Shakti for Her, which are the glyceride version of the Soma Shakti supplement.
He also left us with Patrang, which can be used for all endocrine disturbances in women, at any age (not just for the thyroid gland) and Devadaru, which is made from pine needles and helps any of the previous remedies to work better in women’s physiology.
This specific patient was put on Multimineral Support Drops and Shakti For Her Drops.
She was in shock that a) she actually lost 20 pounds without barely trying and b) most of her pain was reduced to the point where she could actually perform most of her functions and walk again! She was thrilled!
As I get closer to the release of my book on the thyroid gland, I will periodically give some testimonials of the many patients who have either normal blood work, but suffer numerous symptoms of low thyroid, such as fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, joint pain, constipation, acid reflux, high cholesterol, etc. Since their lab work is normal, they are left untreated and sometimes made to feel that their symptoms are in their head, or worse, they are given antidepressants since the doctors don’t know what else to do for them (which make them gain more weight, making them even more miserable).
Many times medications are given for all of their symptoms, such as cholesterol medicine, meds for irregular heartbeat, anti-depressants, proton pump inhibitors for their acid reflux, etc., all the time missing the underlying problem of a malfunctioning thyroid.
And sometimes the blood work will show low thyroid function, yet the hormones don’t seem to alleviate their symptoms, since the thyroid gland will just go to sleep once it senses there is enough thyroid hormone circulating in the blood stream.
In either case, all the reasons the thyroid might be weak need to be addressed: gut infections, heavy metals, late bedtime, improper diet, Vata imbalance, etc., etc.
We have wonderful protocols for supporting the thyroid in numerous ways, allowing it to perk back up on its own. Resist the temptation to going directly to taking the thyroid hormone without addressing the thyroid in this way first. You’ll be amazed at how well (and quickly) the body can heal itself if you just know how to nudge it in the right direction.
