Bharangi is a very old herb in Ayurveda which is famous for helping to restore the health of the lungs and to give good swara (rhythm or sound) to your voice. This in turn gives you better courage.

Bharangi is classified as a divya aushadhi (divine herb) and requires a good vibrational environment to thrive. With the encroachment of modern life on the forests of India today, bharangi has become a rare sighting. In fact, a lot of controversy has come up in the modern dravya guna texts regarding bharangi. Some say it is a tree, others say it is a bush and everyone claims to have the real bharangi.

Vaidya Mishra has been able to find the true bharangi, as his family has known it for generations. You can see a video of the bharangi that Vaidya Mishra uses growing in the wild here. The effects of bharangi are only real if the proper plant is used.

The most important property of bharangi is its ability to restore balance to the lungs when they have become coated with a combination of sleshma (ama-like mucous) and sleshaka kapha (a subdosha of kapha which lubricates the body). When this mucous becomes dried by udana and vyana vata, it gets layered in the bronchial tubes and causes a dry hacking kind of cough (kas) and breathing trouble (swas).

Bharangi works on this situation in the lungs on several levels simultaneously. On the purely physical level, it is ruksha (drying), lagu (light), katu (pungent), tikta (bitter), and ushna (warming). These properties all help to cut the mucous and remove it from the bronchial tube walls.

In addition, bharangi is pachani (stimulates digestive enzymes) and dipani (helps digestive agni, or fire, and all of the agnis of the dhatus (tissues) and of the body in general (improves cellular metabolism). When digestion and metabolism are strong, sleshma and excess sleshaka kapha are no longer produced, which are the cause of the problem in the lungs.

Finally, because bharangi is a divine herb (divya aushadhi), and it is tubera (it travels fast and deep into the body) it helps to supply prana with lots of marut (divine intelligence) to areas that have been clouded by sleshma (mucous). As the bronchial tubes and other parts of the body become more connected to the inner intelligence of the body, they become stronger to throw off imbalance.

How to Use the Course Materials

When you download the zip file for this section of the course (and unzip it using a free unzip program like 7-Zip), you will find a PDF file (which can be opened with the free Adobe Reader) and an MP3 file (which can be played on any MP3 player such as iPod or iTunes).  You can listen to the audio alone, but for the first time through (at least), we recommend that you follow along with the PDF documents to make sure that all of the concepts are clear.  The PDF’s sometimes contain visual diagrams in addition to the Sanskrit verses.  If you learn visually, reading along with the PDF will be helpful.

We also recommend reviewing the PDF, and re-listening to the MP3 file many times, so that you begin to recognize the knowledge and own it.  These MP3 files are especially good to put on your MP3 player so you can listen in the car.  Just as it is easy to remember songs you hear over and over on the radio, you will find that the knowledge in these lectures will stick to you with no effort when you hear them over and over.  You will also find that your understanding of the material deepens each time you hear them.
