L-Dopa, & Depression: Is there a Link?
A recent study confirms the connection between chronic inflammation, fatigue and depression. The research carried out at Emory University explains that there is a link “between the reduced release of dopamine in the brain, the motivation to do things, and the presence of an inflammatory reaction in the body.” The scientists think this is probably the body’s way to optimize its reserves of energy during inflammatory conditions. When we have chronic inflammation (caused by stress or any physical injury) the body needs more energy to heal. […] To ensure that energy is available, the brain uses an adaptive technique to reduce the natural drive to perform other tasks which could potentially drain away the energy needed for healing.” And here is the most interesting part: “According to the new study, the mechanism of this recalibration is immune-mediated disruption of the dopamine pathway, reducing dopamine release.” Reduction of dopamine then results in low mood swings, getting us stuck in a vicious cycle.
