SV Ayurveda places great emphasis on the health of the channels, both the srotas (physical channels) and the nadis (vibrational channels). The nadis support all the physical organs and systems – including the physical channels – by delivering prana (life energy) to them as well as to the mind and senses. When pranic flow is optimal we experience a state of inner fulfillment and freedom from dis-ease.

However, in today’s world our vibrational channels get disturbed and corrupted by stress, unhealthy lifestyles, bad or wrong food choices (such as nightshades), electromagnetic radiation, and a host of other factors. CONSTIPATION

An SV Ayurveda Answer

I see so many cases of constipation in my busy Ayurvedic practice, and just like everything else I treat, the underlying causes need to be addressed — we don’t just want to take laxatives since they can be habit forming and sometimes, especially if they have been used for too long, they can even damage the nerves in the gut, making it literally impossible to move your bowels.

And, as I always say, the underlying causes of any disease in any given person are usually more than one, and they are usually different in each patient. This is definitely true with constipation.

The ancient doctors said before any prescription is written for herbs, you must first see what the patient is doing wrong and tell them to stop doing those things. Otherwise the herbs might not be so effective. So, let’s see what some of the more common causes might be, and then we can discuss how we might treat those underlying causes.

One of the most common causes of constipation is if the Apana, the subdosha (or subsection) of Vata which resides in the intestinal region moves upwards. Apana Vata is a downward flow which moves the bowel movement down, as well as the menstrual flow and even babies during delivery. So if Apana moves up it can make it difficult to move your bowels. In the case of the menstrual flow it can cause painful periods and even endometriosis as the blood mistakenly moves upwards, into the fallopian tubes and out into the abdominal cavity. And if your Apana is moving upwards at the time of labor, it could prolong the labor time, making it difficult for the baby to move downwards through the birth canal.

Apana moves upwards if you have too many thoughts in the mind, if you hyper-analyze things, talk on the phone too long, or talk too much in general. Prana Vata is the movement of thoughts through the mind, so if the thoughts become too much, the Prana Vata sucks up the Apana to give it more energy. Apana can also move up if you rush through the day, multitask and push yourself without periods of proper rest and early bedtime. And in general the Vata can go out of balance if the diet is too light and dry, especially if you eat lots of raw foods and salads, as well as other cold foods, since Vata is cold, dry and light; therefore a cold, dry and light diet can aggravate Vata.

To balance Vata, you need the opposite: warm cooked foods and an unctuous diet, which includes ghee, olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds. Which is why boiled milk is perhaps the most Vata-pacifying food of all, as long as you can digest it properly. This is also why you feel every cell in your body unwinding and relaxing as you sip on the boiled milk — this is what it feels like when the Vata settles down. In fact, a common treatment for constipation in Ayurveda is 1 cup of boiled milk with 1 tsp of ghee stirred into it to help lubricate the bowel more.

Another reason for constipation, which is also related to Apana moving up is that the gall bladder might not release bile as the stomach contents squirt into the duodenum, which is the beginning of the small intestines. The bile flow gives you the urge to move your bowels. There are many reasons why the bile might not squirt out of the gall bladder. Let’s look at some of those reasons, because this is a huge underlying cause of constipation. If you just take a laxative to move your bowels it might work, but what you might really need are herbs and/or foods to promote bile flow. Luckily nature gave us so many of these herbs and foods which I use all day every day in my practice.

So here’s the reason the bile may not flow: One reason is that your bile may become thick like a sludge — this happens if you eat or drink cold foods and beverages. Think of it this way: all the fats in your diet, plus the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, the fat-soluble toxins and even hormones like estrogen which is made from cholesterol, all have to go to the gall bladder to be processed. So any cold foods and beverages you ingest can solidify the fats being held in the gall bladder, causing them to congeal resulting in bile sludge, where the bile, instead of being like a thin flowing liquid becomes thick like a sludge or a toothpaste. Then it can no longer flow easily out of the gall bladder, creating constipation.

Also, the sphincter in the gall bladder, known as the Sphincter of Oddi, must relax and open to allow the bile to flow through. In order for the sphincter to relax you have to be relaxed yourself. But again, if your Vata is high and you are feeling anxious or nervous, the sphincter might not be able to open and allow the bile to flow through, also resulting in constipation.

Also, the sphincter opens up under the presence of magnesium, which relaxes the muscles of the sphincter. If magnesium is low, which is a very common deficiency in the majority of the population, then the Sphincter of Oddi might not be able to open up to allow the bile to flow through, again, resulting in constipation.

You might also get constipated if you don’t drink enough water. If you aren’t taking in enough water your colon will pull water from the stool to keep you hydrated, which will dry out the stool resulting in constipation. Extra water in the stool makes it softer and helps it to pass more smoothly. I’ve had many people tell me their bowels move much better once they increase their water intake.

And you might also get constipated if you eat too many dry foods, such as chips, rice cakes, pretzels, or starches such as rice, oatmeal and other grains. Pastas and breads are especially constipating as the white flour they contain can slow up the bowel movement. All grains are somewhat binding, so if you are constipated try eating less grains and more fresh fruits and cooked vegetables. The fiber in these types of foods can help to soften up the bowel movement so it can flow better and be less hard.

Ayurveda does not recommend a low fat diet, but instead a diet which contains fats that will not clog the arteries or any other channel. A diet rich in beneficial fats is important for numerous reasons, one of which is that it will keep the bowel lubricated which prevents constipation. Always remember that the seat of Vata, that element of dryness which can literally dry us out, is located in the intestinal region. As we age, we must combat this tendency to dry up by keeping an unctuous diet, which is somewhat confusing to some people since we’ve been told our whole lives that we need to follow a low fat diet. This incorrect information has led many people to develop all kinds of health problems, one of which is constipation as our bowel movements dry up as we go deeper into the Vata stage of life which occurs after age 50 and beyond.

SV Ayurveda recognizes that supporting healthy, daily elimination starts with understanding that the colon is a highly intelligent organ central to the health of the entire body. The colon is not a ‘dumb tube’ that can be ‘flushed’ to clean it of residual feces. The colon actually ‘decides’ what materials to receive and what to release. This means you SHOULD NOT manage constipation or other bowel disorders by torturing or forcing your colon to release its contents, ‘cleanse’ it. Besides that, everyone’s bowel tendency is different. Nature has given us many herbs and foods to help facilitate bile flow and bowel movements. It’s best to work with your Ayurvedic practitioner to learn how to use all these herbal treatments since you don’t want to aggravate the other doshas, such as Pitta or Kapha, for example, as you take herbs or change your diet.

But once you learn how to tailor a protocol for your own personal imbalances, you will be amazed how you healthy you feel as you keep your whole body balanced.

One final note here: constipation can come from other reasons which are more serious than those mentioned here, which is why I hesitate to mention all the herbal treatments and foods we use for constipation. If you have irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease, gastroparesis, or other more complicated digestive diseases, very careful and specific measures need to be taken than is required in just treating constipation in general.

So you must proceed with caution since some of the herbal formulas such as Triphala can also scrape their way through the bowel, removing old fecal material and toxins stuck in the walls of the bowel, but this scraping action might be too irritating for those patients with intractable inflammatory bowel disease for example, or those recovering from food poisoning, parasites or other intestinal bugs.

I hope you can see that constipation can be treated successfully if you first identify all the underlying causes and then work with your Ayurvedic practitioner to come up with a treatment plan which will work for your own unique individual imbalances and not create harm as you address these issues.

Cellulite is very hard to get rid of, because we never really understand what it is and how it comes to be in the first place! Vaidya Mishra formulated unique effective ayurvedic creams that address the mechanism of adipose or fat tissue malfunctioning and accumulation.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

Ayurveda has a deep understanding of the causes of cellulite as well as how to manage it.

At the deepest level it is said that the vibrational energy is not received through the body’s nadis and marma-s, the body’s vibrational centers which receive and distribute the flow of prana, or life energy. And if the vibrational energy is not received and circulating, then the process of cellulite formation will begin. It is also important that the three doshas, vata, pitta and kapha are balanced, as well as their subdoshas, which are various areas around the body that these doshas control. Please read my book, “Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda” for a more thorough explanation of the vibrational and physical channels, prana, vata, pitta, kapha and their subdoshas and what they control.

A good diet is necessary for optimal fat metabolism, but sometimes we also need local herbal infusion and transdermal application. This unique SVA formulation contains famous ayurvedic herbs such as Guggulu, Gymnema, Punarnava, and the most famous of them all: Lodhra.

Roll-onto cellulite-ridden areas of your body, or just areas with some fat accumulation. Couple the use of the roll-on with a good SVA diet and regular exercise and watch your fat melt away!

Ingredients:

“Fat Formula Synergy” (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary blend), with Guggul (Commiphora wightii), Gymnema sylvestre, Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Hibiscus diffusus, Lodhra (Symplocos Racemosa), Grapefruit and Sweet Orange in distilled water with Vegetable Glycerine, Beeswax and Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) oil.

So first off we need to make sure the vibrational channels are functioning properly because they control the body’s physical channels, which carry all the bodily fluids such as blood, lymph, sweat, tears, food, etc. And then at the same time we need to keep the doshas and subdoshas balanced.

Next, we must look at digestion: if it isn’t working properly toxins, known as ama (partially digested food which clogs the body’s physical channels) and ama visha (which results from the ama rotting and fermenting and turning into a hot inflammatory acidic toxin) can deposit and accumulate under the skin in the muscles, fat and fascia which is one of the main causative factors in cellulite formation. So to prevent cellulite we must address and fix the patient’s digestion to prevent the toxins from forming and depositing into these tissues.

We must also learn various ways to open up the fascia — the network of fibers, also known as connective tissue, through which the prana and other fluids flow. If our fascia gets stuck and congested, the prana and fluids can’t flow properly, resulting in stagnation in both the physical and vibrational channels, allowing toxins to deposit which create cellulite in specific areas around the body.

We also have to see how clean the 7 tissues are: the blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and reproductive fluids. Toxins held in these 7 tissues contribute to the toxins being held in the 7 layers of the skin. So we have to teach the patient how to keep these 7 tissues clean. For example, there are several processed foods and chemicals which can create toxicity in the blood plasma and blood; poor quality protein causes toxins to be deposited in the muscle tissue (like processed meats, heavy red meats, many of the protein powders currently on the market and leftover proteins which have oxidized, for example); bad fats such as vegetable oils (which cause inflammation in the fat tissue), bad salt (which causes retention of both toxins and fluid in the blood and skin). Poor quality sugars can also trigger cellulite formation, as well as heavy, channel-clogging foods and leftovers. We have specific herbs, teas and dietary recommendations to keep each of the 7 tissues clean.

Even mental and emotional stress can cause toxins to form in the blood, which also contributes to cellulite formation.

Poor circulation is another contributing factor due to a sedentary lifestyle resulting in slow metabolism and accumulation of toxins in certain body parts due to lack of movement. So we must instruct the patient on the best type of exercise for their body type.

Hormonal imbalances can also form cellulite since the hormonal system especially impacts the hips, buttocks and thighs. Here again, we have many herbs and dietary and daily routine recommendations to offer our patients to balance out their hormones.

And, this is not fair, but cellulite formation is rarely found in men since the connective tissue is arranged in a criss-cross pattern which keeps their fat layer from expanding, which prevents the superficial puckered appearance of the skin seen in women’s cellulite deposits. Women’s connective tissue is more perpendicular allowing cellulite to form more easily.

My teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra’s specialty was dermatology. Treating cellulite was the last course he gave to his doctors and lay people before his untimely passing in 2017. Thanks to his genius in treating all skin conditions, he left us with a 4-step approach to treat cellulite. The first step is to massage the cellulite with a specific type of raw silk glove, which will break down the toxins stuck in the fascia and at the same time allowing more circulation and movement to open up the flow of both the vibrational and physical channels to allow the stagnant prana and physical toxins to move out.

He then made various transdermal creams to be placed directly onto the areas affected by the cellulite. The first cream opens the channels to the affected areas so those areas can be detoxified and nourished. The second cream creates new collagen synthesis to aid in restoring the skin health by tightening up the areas of cellulite and sagging skin. And the third cream restores the fitness and elasticity to the fascia. The approach also re-enlivens the skin, giving it a healthy glow.

When we combine this with proper diet, daily routine and cleansing techniques we have great success in both preventing and treating cellulite.

So you can see from this discussion that in order to properly treat not only cellulite, but any disease process in the body, we need to take a greater perspective on the problem and not just treat the most superficial symptom. In the case of cellulite we want to make sure we don’t just address the skin and fascia, but instead look deeper to see why toxins are forming in the first place which will then get deposited into the various layers of the skin and fascia forming the cellulite.

I hope this information helps you to understand how to always step back, look at the health problem from the deepest perspective possible, thinking outside the box, so you can properly treat these problems at their various root causes.

IS IT FOR YOU?

Intermittent fasting is all the rage right now where research has shown that limiting your intake of foods and calorie-containing beverages for only a window of 8 hours a day may be beneficial to your health. You abstain from food for the remaining 16 hours, but you’re still allowed to drink water and other non-caloric beverages like plain coffee or tea. Of course there are many variations on this theme. Some people fast on alternate days, some do it periodically and many others do as just described: on a daily time-restricted feeding schedule.

Research shows that it can help you lose weight and lower your blood sugar, among other things.

Let’s examine this a little further because I’d like to present an argument against intermittent fasting, based on the guidance from my teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, one of India’s foremost Ayurvedic physicians who I trained with for nearly 20 years.

Let’s start this discussion by talking about the changes that have occurred to our physiology over the last several decades. But first you should know about the four types of toxins and the difference in the type of toxins the average modern patient is harboring compared to our counterparts within the last several centuries.

The four types of toxins we identify in SV Ayurveda are: ama, ama visha, gara visha and electromagnetic frequency toxicity.

For a quick review: ama is a cold, clogging toxin. The word ama refers to food that doesn’t fully digest and remains as a residue stuck in your intestines because either the food you ate was too heavy and/or there might be problems with your digestive tract. Ama is cold and clogs not only the digestive channel but all other subsequent physical channels. An example is that you would eat some ice cream, and then feel clogged up in your sinuses, throat and lungs (all physical channels) due to the fact that cold dairy is too difficult to digest and forms a sticky clogging residue that clogs all the body’s physical channels.

The next toxin is known as ama visha: this very hot reactive, acidic and inflammatory toxin results when either the ama sits in the digestive tract too long and ferments, or the food turns into ama visha immediately by a very hot reactive liver. Don’t forget, your liver has to process all the food you eat, so if you have a history of either eating processed foods or taking too many pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, vaccines, acid reflux medicines, birth control pills or steroids, for example, the liver becomes very hot and reactive and then when the food comes in, instead of intelligently processing it the way it’s supposed to, it has a temper tantrum on the food and oxidizes it, turning it into ama visha immediately. This very hot reactive toxin which forms in the digestive tract can then pave the way for autoimmune diseases and cancer, both of which happen when the insides of the cells are acidic and not alkaline and cool, the way they’re supposed to be.

The third type of toxin is known as gara visha. This type of toxin comes from the outside world from chemicals we expose ourselves to, in the form of pharmaceuticals, processed foods, air pollution, pesticides, and skin care products, for example. The word visha means poison so both ama visha and gara visha, toxins produced from inside the body and those which we are exposed to from outside of the body, are both highly acidic, reactive and hot. Let’s keep this in mind as I present my argument against intermittent fasting.

The fourth type of toxin is electromagnetic frequencies, which come from computers, cell phones, and radiation from cell phone towers, smart meters and so on. In an upcoming video I will be talking about why these types of toxins are harmful and how they react in the body. But for now, it’s good to know that these types of toxins are also very hot and dangerous, and can create cancer as well, which is why we have to limit our exposure to them as much as we can.

So think about this: 3 of these 4 types of toxins, ama visha, gar visha and electromagnetic toxins are all very hot, acidic, reactive and inflammatory, capable of causing autoimmune diseases and cancer, where the inside of the cells is hot and acidic.

Now, in this modern era, especially within the last 100 years as pharmaceuticals have been developed, and as the food industry has grown so large and started churning out food with preservative chemicals and flavoring agents our ancestors would have never eaten; in addition, as we have allowed over 80,000 chemicals into our environment with air pollution, pesticides, skin care products, and more — nowadays we are overloaded with hot reactive toxins, which is why autoimmune diseases and cancer are at epidemic high levels — our bodies are letting us know they are filled with inflammatory hot toxins, the liver is overwhelmed and overheated and the insides of our cells are acidic, all contributing to this epidemic of cancer and autoimmune diseases we are witnessing.

So now think about this: the liver is the main filter of the body — it is the liver’s job to have to deal with all these very hot new modern toxins that enter it on a continual basis. So what happens when the liver filters out hot reactive inflammatory toxins all day every day? It gets hotter! Then what happens when the liver gets hot? Well, many things. But here is one thing that is happening to just about everyone: the liver is not only the seat of detoxification but the main seat of digestion, which means that in addition to filtering out all these very hot toxins it has to process all the food we are eating.

And in case you didn’t know, the liver contains 5 digestive fires so it can burn up the food you are eating. Compare that with the stomach, which has one digestive fire. Both organs have to cook and transform the food you eat so it can absorb easily into the bloodstream.

Let me reiterate here: the liver has five digestive fires. The liver is already a very large organ, the second largest organ in the body, and it is already hot and poised to burn up the food you eat with its 5 digestive fires stoked at all times.

Now, in this modern era the liver is even hotter, due to all the hot toxins it has to deal with.

When I sat with my teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, he would take the patient’s pulse and then dictate to me their protocol which I would write down for them to follow at home. The directions that I wrote over and over all day were, “Never skip or delay meals.”

Why? Because the liver, a fiery organ ready to process food. And in this day and age it is extra hot and needs food ON TIME to pacify it. By avoiding foods when it is time to eat the liver gets hotter and hotter. Then since the liver makes the blood, the blood gets hot, which can make you feel angry, give you rashes or digestive upset, and many other symptoms. One thing in particular that can happen is that this excess heat or agni as it is known in Ayurveda, can burn the Ojas. Ojas is the delicate compound produced after all the food you eat travels through all the 7 tissues, which takes about 30 days, unless it’s good quality boiled milk, in which case it makes Ojas immediately. Ojas is produced after the 7th tissue is nourished.

Ojas gives you strength and stamina. It gives you immunity to disease. It is your neurotransmitters and hormones. If there is too much agni or heat in the liver and blood, you could actually burn the Ojas, leaving you with weak immunity or imbalances in your hormones and neurotransmitters, which could upset how you think and feel all day.

We see it in children — just deprive them of food when they get hungry and watch how angry they get as the heat in their liver and blood rises.

The problem in America is that the diet is so processed, so toxic and heavy, that ANY change in the diet might make a person feel better! So going without food after being overfed “toxic” food for too many months or years might make you feel better, but over time, as the pitta rises, if you don’t stop the practice soon enough, you will probably create a pitta imbalance, burning your Ojas and creating anger, rashes, and furthering your autoimmune tendencies.

So think about it when you hear everyone talking about how they deprive themselves of food on a daily basis. And try to stay in touch with your body to see if you think the prolonged intermittent fasting and depriving your hot liver of food to burn up, are starting to impact your health.

It’s always good to hear the other side of the story. My teacher was a true seer and great healer. He would always discourage the patient from fasting to regain their health. Instead he gave them warm nourishing foods to eat that are easily digested so he could both nourish the body and keep the liver happy, without overloading the patient with heavy, hard to digest food. And it worked! All of our patients described how healthy they felt.

In conclusion, while fasting might help initially as you transition to a lighter diet, it might make more sense to nourish your body, mind and soul, and listen to your bodies’ cues when it feels it needs food. It could save you from developing bigger imbalances later on down the road as your liver heats up from continually depriving it of much needed food.

I hope that this information comes in handy as you try various methods to improve your health, but it’s good to consider Ayurveda, a time-tested ancient source of wisdom.

The Healing Properties of Spices

In the Western world we think of spices primarily used to make the food taste good. But it turns out that they also have healing properties, just like the herbs and foods do.

They are very good at helping out one’s digestion as well. I have had many patients tell me they want to take digestive enzymes when they can’t digest their food properly. While they might find some relief from them, in Ayurveda, we give spices to create enzymatic activity within the digestive tract — to ignite the digestive fire in that way rather than giving the enzymes which their body already makes.

For example, we could give cardamom pods to help digest protein, or fenugreek seeds and/or cumin seeds to help with the digestion of fats, ginger is used to ignite the digestive fire, and fennel seed has the capability of bringing the digestive fire up if the flame is too low or down if the flame is set too high. I would add a cautionary note here in that fennel is somewhat estrogenic, so I wouldn’t use fennel in treating your digestion if you have a problem which we call high estrogen/low progesterone, which is very common, and which can cause glandular growths, such as cysts on the ovaries or breasts, uterine polyps, fibroid tumors or a heavy menstrual flow, all of which happen when estrogen is too high.

We use ajwain seeds when the body’s physical channels are very clogged, which can happen if the patient has been eating a lot of hard aged cheeses, red meats, nut butters and unfermented soy like tofu. We also use ajwain to purify the mother’s breastmilk if she did not know that she should do some cleansing before conceiving her baby and now her breast milk contains toxins which are creating problems in the baby, such as acid reflux or eczema. And finally, we use ajwain in our cleanses to dilate the urinary channels so that the coriander tea can direct the toxins that we are pulling out of the deeper tissues into the kidneys.

When we teach our patients the correct way to take milk, we show them how to simmer the milk with cardamom pods which help you digest the protein in the milk and a cinnamon stick, which helps you digest the sugar in the milk. Cinnamon is also used to increase the patients’ sensitivity to insulin. Many people are diabetic because of insulin resistance where they are making the insulin but their body no longer responds to it. Cooking with cinnamon sticks helps to increase the insulin sensitivity by 20%. Which is why it is recommended in many of the Ayurvedic herbal formulas for blood sugar.

Ginger root has always been famous for increasing the digestive fire if it is too low, say, for example if someone has lost their appetite. It is also used for nausea, especially when combined with cardamom pods, in a tea.

Sometimes we encounter a person who has lots of congestion, but they also have high pitta, or too much heat in the body. In cases where there is congestion, usually ginger and black pepper are used in a tea to burn through the congestion in the sinuses and other channels. But if someone has too much heat already in the body, we cannot use ginger and pepper, as it will heat them up more. So in situations like this we recommend the use of whole cloves, both in cooking and in a tea, since cloves can open the clogged channels and create a cooling energy once taken into the body.

Nutmeg is good for calming the brain — it can be boiled into the milk and taken at bedtime. However, you don’t want to do this longterm, as it can dull the brain a little. We also use nutmeg and formulas in teas and beverages to calm down diarrhea since it tells the brain to slow down the motility in the gut. Again, in these cases, we recommend the use of grating the whole nutmeg and not using the ground up version.

Curry leaves are used in cooking to help the liver lower the blood sugar.

Fenugreek seeds are also used to lower both the blood sugar and high blood cholesterol. This is because it helps the liver which keeps both the blood sugar and cholesterol in check. This is also why fenugreek is used to help with weight loss, since it helps metabolize the fats in the diet. We also recommend tea to our nursing mothers combining fenugreek seed and fennel seed in two quarts of hot water to be sipped throughout the day to help bring in the breast milk.

Cumin seed can also be used for fat metabolism, lowering cholesterol and losing weight, which is why we usually have our patients combine cumin seed and fenugreek seed in these situations, always along with other spices and herbs to balance out the formula. Whole cumin seed helps our gut absorb foods, which is why it is combined with nutmeg to help stop diarrhea. And it is because it is so effective in aiding absorption that we use it in our rehydration drinks when someone is dehydrated. Many people say they drink water but it goes right through them, but if you add toasted and crushed cumin seed to your water, or lassi or buttermilk drink, it helps the absorption of that water into the cells.

Saffron can be simmered in milk to prevent Parkinson’s Disease. But again, we caution our patients who tend to have high pitta to be careful with saffron, as it is known to increase the heat in the blood if used for an extended period of time.

The majority of our patients are given their own specific tea formulas — and while there are numerous herbs and spices contained within their own unique formula, which is based on their own particular problems within their physiology, most of these patients will have whole coriander seeds used in their recipes. This is because coriander can remove toxins while keeping the liver cool.

In this day and age everyone’s liver is extremely hot from the overuse of pharmaceuticals combined with the chemicals in their highly processed diet. So we need to introduce detox, but keep the liver cool in the process, to prevent rashes and digestive upset as we clean out these very hot toxins. Not only that, many people will develop a rash as they start their cleansing protocols, but a tea made with coriander seeds can direct those toxins away from the skin and into the urine, thereby preventing a flare-up of the skin.

This was one of the things Vaidya Mishra, my teacher and Ayurvedic mentor noticed when he came to America. Whenever he tried to put a person on a detox program, they would invariably break out in a rash as the very hot toxins would come out through the pores in the skin. It didn’t take him too long to realize he had to give the patient a tea with coriander to sip throughout the day to prevent those rashes.

In addition to all these healing capabilities, spices are also used in the majority of the Ayurvedic herbal formulas because they are catalysts to help create transformations. In other words, they can help you to absorb the herbs in the formula deep into the cells. For example, now we know that black pepper increases the absorption of turmeric into the cells by around 2,000%. That’s quite a lot! This is why you’ll notice many of the Ayurvedic formulas contain spices used along with the herbs in the formula.

I remember Vaidya Mishra was always worried about the American patients who did not know how to cook with the dozens upon dozens of spices like their Indian counterparts. They were never taught the healing properties of the spices. And even in India, sometimes they just handed down the use of spices in cooking or in boiling milk, without themselves understanding exactly why they were putting the cardamom in the milk or the cumin and fenugreek seeds in the heavier dishes.

But now that we have modern science, we can research all the medicinal values of these amazing spices so that it gives us incentives to have more tools to heal ourselves with, outside of the realms of just herbal teas and tablets.

So hopefully you’ll learn how to use more spices in cooking, which could go a long way to help your digestion, in healing your mind and body, and to enhance your detoxification protocols. Don’t just think of spices as something only used to make food taste good.

Daily and Weekly Facial Protocols

Enhance beauty from the inside out with Vaidya Mishra’s daily skin care protocols and pranic facial creams and cleansers.

4 Easy Morning Steps:

In the mornings, do a quick cleanse with Lalita’s Prebiotic Facial Cleanser. You may also use the regular Lalita’s Facial Cleanser.

Then apply Lalita’s Facial Cream Clay, leave it on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water and dry your face.

Apply Lalita’s Facial Toner, spread with the fingertips and gently massage, wipe off any residual drops.

Apply Lalita’s Age-Defying Cream, or Navratna Celestial Radiance Facial Cream – if you have allotted time then it is best to do a facial marma massage with your cream, then spread out the cream from the points onto the rest of your face.

3 Easy Step for Night Protocol

At night before bed, clean your face from the residue of the day with Lalita’s Facial Cleanser (Use the Prebiotic Cleanser to replenish your skin).
Apply Lalita’s Facial Toner, gently massage and spread and dry.

Weekend Deeper Detox & Rejuvenation Protocol

Whether you follow a daily skin care regimen or not, it is nice to pamper yourself at least once a week for a deeper detox and deeper nourishment session.

Start on Friday Night

Clean your face with Lalita’s Prebiotic Cream Clay. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, then wash off. Make sure you add more Cream Clay on and around the nostrils, between the eyebrows, and the chin area, as these areas secrete more lipids and more lipid soluble toxins.
Apply a thin layer of either Lalita’s Facial Oil or Lalita’s Face-Lift Cream. We are using the lipid-based products to oleate the skin so that the lipid molecules can bind the toxic molecules of the facial skin.

In the morning, use the SVA Facial Synergy Steam Pack – directions are included on the label. Be careful not to burn your skin, keep a distance from the steaming bowl. Steam for 8-10 minutes with a cover around your head. The steam process will help you totally eliminate any toxins that were mobilized the night before.

Apply a little thicker layer of toner and gently massage in.
