Did you know that cold weather not only gives you dry, itchy, flaky skin, but it actually ages your skin by depleting its friendly bacteria?
With seasonal changes, our doshic imbalances shift to reflect the new temperature conditions. For our skin, this can wreak havoc in doshic terms because vyana vata, bhrajak pitta, and shleshak kapha all go off creating dry itchy flaky skin that is hard to remedy. 
But we’ve learnt with Vaidya that even extreme harsh weather conditions can bring some gift for our physiology! No matter the season, it’s always a great time for health! No matter where one lives, perfect weather does not exist all the time everywhere, so we have to learn to make the most out of existing conditions. And it is possible to get great benefit for the skin and physiology out of any climactic condition – given proper self-care knowledge. Every season is beautiful and every season comes with its own gifts! When cold weather results in dryness of the skin, it is because the body is not able to support and hydrate the skin internally due to shrunk micro and macro channels. The lipid and water components of the skin get depleted as internal nourishment to the skin is slowed down and sometimes fully blocked. If, in addition to this, external weather conditions are excessively cold and windy, they also deplete and dry up the skin externally. So your skin becomes internally and externally starved for nourishment and lubrication. The best route, in this case is to opt for transdermal nutrients – since the internal pathways are blocked off, support can be more effectively given externally and transdermally! In this scenario, the skin is even more ready to absorb transdermally and get fully hydrated and rejuvenated. 
So what actually happens to the skin, in doshic terms, in the wintertime? Here is how Vaidya explained it. 
Vata Goes Way Further Off with Dryness…
 Vyana vata gets aggravated in the winter time due to 2 reasons:
  1. our physical circulatory channels shrink due to the cold weather, and end up getting blocked. When they get blocked, moisture and the shleshak kapha in our cells is unable to move. When shleshak kapha is not free to circulate it cannot complete its task of lubricating the body and dryness results; 
  2. drying cold wind creates even more dryness externally, killing the friendly bacteria that live in the skin, further depleting our skin, and bringing about premature wrinkling and sagging.
It’s ideal to use creams or lotions or oils that carry aromatic channel opening essential oils, such as: Peppermint; Camphor; Ajwain; Sage; Rosemary. These help dilate the circulatory channels, so the Shleshaka can move freely through. Vaidya always prepared these herbs in his ancestral SVA methods to yield herbal synergies that would deeply moisturize the body from within, as they relaxed and detoxed the clogged channels. Open channels and intelligently infused herbal ingredients help keep vyana vata in check. 
Pitta People Get Even More Hot!
Bhrajak pitta gets aggraveted in the cold weather, particularly for pitta type predominant people, because the circulation of heat in the body also gets obstructed due to the shrunk channels. Due to the blocked and poor circulation, their skin becomes more sensitive to the sun. This is further aggravated by the lack of the lubricating factor – shleshak kapha – which is also slowed down or blocked due to poor circulation. Using ingredients such as those in the tridoshic lotion, for example lemongrass, help reduce photosensitivity and nurture pitta sensitive skin. In addition, the Aloe and Vegetable glycerin in the lotion, along with the Neem, all 3 together, help pacify and nourish bhrajak pitta. 
Kapha Gets Heavier and More Clogged Up!
Shleshak kapha gets blocked and accumulated due to shrunk channels. In order to be balanced, it needs plants and herbs with agneya, or warming, prabhava or ultimate action. Vaidya used herbs such as Holy Basil, whose mildly warming properties, along with Peppermint, Rosemary, Calendula, and Citronella, relax our channels to let the shleshak kapha flow through and moisturize and lubricate our channels.
The overall, in-depth cellular nurturing effect and efficacy of Vaidya’s tridoshic massage oils and lotions helps even further with long term use. The benefits of the herbs get absorbed readily transdermally into your skin, traveling deep into your cells, and retain there, supplying moisture and hydration leaving you with a supple smooth skin. Regular use of the massage oils first thing in the morning, even if for a quick few minutes, will also help support the immune system of your skin, nourishing all the friendly bacteria by supplying them with prebiotic, specially when you apply the tridoshic lotion that contains Aloe and Vegetable glycerin that supports their growth. In addition, many of the essential oils used in the formulas have scientific research showing their anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, which makes the oils and the Tridoshic lotion great to use on your feet, to help prevent local fungal infections, as well as keep your hands sanitized when you are out and about in the world during this year’s intense “flu season!”

Auspicious Beginnings! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Jan 17, 2019, #1, Vol 9

Happy New Year! 
Did you know that – as per the Vedic calendar – January 14th is the actual new year day? Dedicated to the Sun God – Surya, it marks the beginning of longer days resulting from the sun’s transit into the sign of Capricorn or Makara Sankranthi. This festival is a solar event, concluding the sun’s southward journey (Dakshinayana). It marks the beginning of a six month auspicious period. Vaidya explained that when the sun is in the southern hemisphere it is more detoxifying, and when it moves to the northern hemisphere is is more nourishing and nurturing. Thus this transition of the sun from the southern to the northern hemisphere marks a more “nurturing” phase of the sun’s relationship to the earth and our bodies. Makara Sankranti is an important pan-Indian festival celebrated with regional variations. People travel to dip into holy rivers, such as the Ganga, the Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna or Kaveri. Bathing in a sacred river, conducting rituals, offering prayers to the sun, are traditional cultural practices all over India. This is a great day to initiate new ventures and projects. Here’s to new auspicious beginnings!

About Irina Petrova
Irina left her natal Ukraine in the mid 1980s, leaving behind a beautiful childhood and home nestled in a quiet orchard with berry bushes and countless patches of fresh fruits and vegetables, surrounded by green forests, clean rivers, and endless fields and meadows of wild grass and flowers. In this pristine environment, she developed a great love for Nature’s restorative powers. Trained as a classical musician from a young age, her love for beauty, aesthetics, and the healing power of Nature and plants found deeper fulfillment through Ayurveda. Before embarking upon her ayurvedic journey full-time, Irina taught classical piano and ran a successful real estate career. She holds a Master’s degree in Ayurveda from MUM (Fairfield, Iowa) 2001. In addition, she has studied SV Ayurveda with Vaidya Ramakant Mishra. She also recently completed an advanced esthetician’s course at the Santa Barbara Cosmetology Academy and received her esthetician’s license in 2017. She is certified in Vaidya Mishra’s Blissful Beauty Marma Facial System, as well as advanced SVA Marma protocols.

HAIR LOSS IN CHILDREN :
A Case Study with Dr Teitelbaum
We would need to conduct thorough studies to determine why so many children are losing their hair nowadays. But in my clinic the most common repeated root cause I encounter entails the body’s autoimmune reaction where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Once the thyroid gland is weakened by these constant attacks, it loses its full functionality and the hormonal output from the thyroid decreases. There is also a preponderance of autoimmune conditions of the thyroid gland itself, mostly Hashimoto’s.
In the same way, there is no good explanation for the huge increase in the amount of Hashimoto’s disease. It has been steadily increasing since the 1950’s making it one of the most common autoimmune diseases and the most common hormonal disorder seen today.
Some people say it is genetic, however that cannot be verified due to the rapid increase in the number of people who have been diagnosed with this disease within the last several decades. 
In either case, whether one has hypothyroid or Hashimoto’s, mainstream medicine will give thyroid hormone supplementation so that the levels of thyroid hormone in the blood work normalize, but the person continues to be symptomatic, or in this particular case I am presenting, bald.
Doctors then inject the scalp with steroids which is the main treatment for baldness today. The treatment for these ailments is the same for everyone: doctors are trained in medical school to follow specific treatment protocols for the specific diseases/sympotms they identify.
This approach, however, does not take into account the underlying reasons each individual patient is experiencing. Ayurveda has always discussed figuring out the hetu or underlying reason for the physiology before attempting to provide a treatment protocol. And, as I usually write in almost every one of these case histories, it is true in every case we see. And virtually every case of any disease you can think of has to be treated individually, tailored to that patient’s unique set of problems creating that disease.  
In order to keep perspective on all this, whatever you or your patient has been diagnosed with, whatever the a “cookbook approach”!
Fortunately, Ayurveda provides us with an invaluable tool in each of these cases: the art of pulse diagnosis. In the pulse you can find the imbalance, which is often far removed from where the symptom is occurring.  
I have treated many cases of baldness in children. I’m sure there are many underlying causes, but it is very common, as in this boy’s case in this article, to see heavy metals disrupting the thyroid gland function, causing the hair to fall out. 
In some of these cases the thyroid hormones will be normal on blood work. But it doesn’t mean that the thyroid is OK — I have numerous discussions in my upcoming thyroid book, “Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda,” so I will not go into detail here.
And in some cases the thyroid hormones will be low. When they are low and the doctors give the thyroid hormones the hair still does not grow back because the reason for the thyroid malfunction has not been addressed, namely the heavy metals.
In fact, I have taken numerous children off their thyroid hormone, figured out what was causing the imbalance, treated that, and miraculously the hair grew back, even without the thyroid hormone. 
In the case of this boy, and many many children I am seeing with weak thyroid gland and either the hair is falling or they have totally become bald, I find heavy metals. The most common metal we find is aluminum, which comes from their 73 immunizations. In a smaller percentage of the cases there is fluoride disrupting the thyroid. In years past mercury was seen depressing the thyroid gland, but now that they have taken the mercury out of most of the immunizations we are seeing mainly aluminum, which doesn’t really matter, because both are serious toxins which disrupt the brain and thyroid gland (and many other areas).
It turns out, because the thyroid gland is programmed to absorb iodine, it gets confused and absorbs whatever heavy metals come into the body, as they are similar in structure to iodine.
You can actually feel this very easily in someone’s pulse: you can feel a very heavy dead weight, almost metallic feel over udana. Sometimes it is throughout the pulse and sometimes you can feel it in ranjaka pitta, as the liver also absorbs these heavy metals.
The most common source of mercury nowadays is in the flu shots; aluminum is found in the majority of children’s immunizations and fluoride is found throughout much of the tap water in America.
In this boy’s case, he was overloaded with aluminum. I am currently treating several people right now who have overdosed in fluoride by drinking untreated tap water. Fluoride was used in the 1930’s to treat an overactive thyroid, but it was so poisonous to the thyroid gland that it totally destroyed it, so they had to discontinue its use. Then they started putting it in our tap water to prevent dental caries. Some people think this might at explain at least part of the reason for such a huge increase of the amount of autoimmune thyroid occurring nowadays. I would have to agree with this.
First, when you see heavy metals, you have to chelate out the metal using Rasa Sodhaka drops or cream. You can also instruct the patient to eat cilantro, which is a great chelator of heavy metals. However, just eat a tablespoon or two a day. Don’t go overboard as you could create a detox crisis.
Then, you have to support the thyroid gland — in this boy’s case we used “Shakti for Him” Drops, Ashwagandha Cream, Magnesium Cream and Vitamin D Cream.
We also used “Actifoll oil” on his scalp everyday for months to activate his hair follicles to start growing hair again. In these few pictures, you can see that his hair has started to grow back. I will give updated pictures as the months go by.
I have so many cases of Hashimoto’s I am seeing right now, with or without hair loss, and in many of these cases they are presenting with heavy metals stuck on the thyroid gland. I usually find too much mercury in the adults who get flu shots every year as the mercury hasn’t been removed in most of the flu shots yet.
We are so fortunate to have solutions to many of the current diseases for which mainstream medicine has no answer. We can thank Vaidya Mishra for totally revamping Ayurveda for this modern era, based on what he saw in the pulses of people living in developed countries, suffering from the dangerous toxins we allow in our pharmaceuticals, air, soil and water.

Ojas in Relation to Emotional Bliss and Mental Balance 
(part 2 of a 3 part article)

In the first installment of my article we discussed the notion of “pragyaparadh” – an experience of seeing life in fragments, appearing separate from the wholeness and source of life as the cause of suffering. In addition, feeling attached to any type of changing relative experience whether it’s being happy, healthy, or clear. Happiness is also a changing relative experience - it comes into our experience and then slips away.  Vedic scriptures say “Knowledge is the greatest purifyer” (Bhagavad Gita, chapter 4). Studying Ayurveda itself is considered part of the protocol for feeling more balanced and healthy in life. Understanding and experiencing the non-changing wholeness which is our core nature is a potent path to greater feelings of peace even admist the chaos of human life. The non changing transcendental level of being as the backdrop to all events, all moods, feelings, and experiences. It does not mean that you will always feel happy once you realize this Being because feelings are not static. Even when one has grief, pain, illness, if the knowledge and experience of the eternal part of beingness is there, we can experience peace. Pure consciousness is devoid of qualities, yet if forms the basis of all qualities.
Effect of Over or Under Use of the Five Senses on Mental Health
Modern culture continually bombards all five senses with outer stimuli, such as: air and noise pollution; indoor florescent lighting; incoming advertising; daily driving; overworking; overeating; and mindless entertainment via technology devices such as the internet, cell phone and television. In addition, many people who live in large cities are no longer connected to the natural world and do not have access to nature, whether through gardening, walking in forests, looking at the stars at night, walking barefoot on sand, visually looking at a distant horizon, or swimming in natural waterways. In the larger cities one cannot see the stars in the night sky due to the city lights. 
From an Ayurvedic perspective, not only do the senses become over-stimulated creating excess vata, but also the individual becomes out of sync with the natural rhythms and cycles of the body, the natural environment, and cosmos. I believe that this lack of physical perception and experience of nature, can lead to a myopic visual orientation and promote limitation in one’s thinking, leading to depression, black-and-white thinking, and a lack of problem-solving abilities, leading to anxiety and depression. An Ayurvedic protocol would be for the client to observe the sunrise or the sunset to connect him with the rhythms of nature. Take breaks from computer work every few hours with a walk near trees and nature, without the cell phone. Perhaps joining a gardening coop, swimming in natural lakes and rivers, or walking outside on a forest trail. 
As an Ayurvedic practitioner and therapist that used to live in Silicon Valley, I have seen the mental and physical damage from individual overworking 60 plus hours on the computer. I remember Vaidya sharing his experiences as well and explaining how “ojas” gets burned from over exposure to EMF radiation and overwork. This is one of the benefits of doing his Transdermal Marma protocol as it helps to lubricate the dried out channels or nadis that carry prana throughout the system.
The Effect of Physical Toxins on Mental Health
Toxins, or ama, form a sticky substance that blocks tissues and bodily channels, disturbing ojas and digestion. In addition to physical ama, there is a type of “mental ama” or mental toxicity that disturbs the mind and can results in excessive anger, fear, self-criticism, greed, or resentment. Undue stress due to intense relational problems, tension at work, loss due to death, divorce, or financial problems can contribute to the creation of ama if the individual lacks resiliency or ojas. Exposure to negativity, violence, and shocking sensory stimuli whether in real life or media increase vata. Ayurveda can assist in reducing depression, anxiety, and memory problems by helping the client eliminate these toxins through Ayurvedic detoxification therapies, diet, and herbal medicines. 
Ojas and it’s role in Well Being and Emotional Balance
The ancient Ayurvedic medical textbooks describe a physical compound produced from good functioning digestion of high quality food as Ojas. Vaidya Mishra explained that Ojas is the connecting factor between universal intelligence and inner intelligence. When ojas gets low in the body, depression symptoms gets high. “In simple words, ojas is the will to live life and when the desire of living is exhausted it’s called as depression” (Hirpara, K. 2016, p. 3). Ojas, according to Vaidya Mishra is a neurotransmitter that is enhanced by consuming healthy fats such as clarified butter called ghee, fresh fruits, olive oil and pure water. Emotionally, ojas is enhanced through loving relationships, sleeping well, laughter, cultivating patience, compassion, and living a sattvic life. (Teitlebaum, M., 2009, p. 205). 
     One of the most important factors responsible for the cause of both physical and mental health issues is low ojas. The strength of ojas is directly proportional to a person’s resistance to dysfunction or disease. Just as in the body, the quality ojas cultivates strength and stability in the mind. “The role of ojas is to stabilize the mind. It allows the mind to resist stress and protects it from faulty impressions that enter through the bodily senses and the external world” (Tabb, K., para 9). When ojas is healthy it helps one feel confident and grounded and allows for feelings of contentment and peace. It is ojas that protects against feelings of depression and fatigue (Tabb, para. 9). Ojas can be observed on the skin as radiance, healthy glow in the eyes, voice and behavior.
    Depletion of Ojas Effect on Emotional Balance
Ojas is depleted or weakened by excessive alcohol, fever, excess ejaculation, overwork, fasting, excessive exercise, anger, poor sleep habits, chronic pain, recreational substances, excessive travel and aging as well as exposure to environmental toxins.
  As a therapist trained in Ayurveda, it is important that the therapist be alert to the signs that indicate low ojas in order to create a treatment plan. Usually when there is depression, anxiety or other types of physical disease, ojas will be low. The goal in an integrative approach is to increase ojas and eliminate ama and make available stress reducing therapies , meditation, herbal protocols, change of diet, behavior modification and Ayurvedic treatments as recommended. Often there is a connection between the level of sattva and ojas, meaning that sattvic (calm) lifestyle can help to increase the level of ojas, and low ojas is be connected to activity that is kapha or tamasic (destructive or stagnant) in nature  The three energies that govern the mind, and living beings are the three gunas–sattwa, rajas, and tamas. By knowing these impulses that govern the mind, the therapist can better understand the nature of the client undergoing therapy and create the treatment plan. 
Ojas is one of many things that can be felt in the pulse.  Once, I had taken the pulse of a young man and received a strong image of him cursing and swearing as well as having depleated ojas. He was surprised how I could detect swearing in his pulse and he revealed that he was trying to over come a life threatening illness.  The cursing, he said, had been a life long type of defense, with every other sentence cursing since he was 11 or 12 years old.  This negativity had gone deep into the vibrational channels of the body, the swear words could be detected within the nadis.   His protocol was to start blessing instead of cursing and also do Transdermal SVA Marma. Vaidya recited the Heart Lotus mantra daily and encouraged us to learn it as well.  There are two type of Ojas, one that you are born with and the other where levels increase and decrease.  Ojas is born in the heart and so the heart mantra which helps to open the heart petals and allow us to have a strong mind is a great technique to increase our ojas and immunity.

Can SVA Help with Chronic Acne?
ACNE: A Case History 
We should always resist the temptation to treat the symptom! This is especially true in treating any skin disease, including acne. Our immediate impulse is to use skin formulations applied locally to control and eliminate the acne; however, the underlying problems causing the skin conditions are actually not rooted in the skin, but much deeper in one’s physiology. So let’s back up a bit as we work our way to the source(s) of the problem. 
The skin is an organ of elimination, evacuating toxins through the pores throughout the day. If you recall, there are four types of toxins: ama (from partially digested food clogging the channel), ama visha (an acidic/hot toxin formed when the ama rots and ferments), garavisha (environmental toxins outside of the body), and finally: electromagnetic toxins. 
The two very “hot” toxins we are concerned with here are ama visha and garavisha. Normally you don’t see the toxins as they exit through the skin, but if they are virulent they will cause inflammation, itching, redness, rashes and possible infections as they get evacuated via the sweat pores. 
So first, we have to think of all the reasons why the normally alkaline blood and alkaline toxins would turn so acidic and hot. The reasons are numerous, which is why you, as a practitioner, have to thoroughly investigate all these reasons and make sure the patient stops doing whatever they are doing that’s causing these virulent toxins, otherwise, no herbal treatment or other protocol will ever be enough to give lasting relief. That’s how things are known to become “chronic” life-long conditions, as the doctors informed my patient (see the video). She was told she had to live with her chronic acne condition for the rest of her life. (read more below the testimonial video)  

The ancient doctors were correct in stating that every disease could be traced back to problems with digestion. Once you swallow the food, as it makes its way through the digestive tract it is imperative that it breaks down into smaller and smaller particles so it can be absorbed through tiny cell walls into the blood plasma. In order for this process to occur properly, one must have excellent digestion, or else the food remains in the digestive tract, forming “ama” or semi-digested toxic waste, which then circulates freely and ends up clogging our body’s circulatory and other channels. If it is not burnt-off, digested away, and allowed to sit in our bodies, it is known to rot and ferment and turn acidic. It is the body’s natural intelligence that guides it to eliminate such toxic deposits. But when the circulatory channels are clogged due to bad diet, stress, etc, then it tries to evacuate or detox through the skin. When such virulent toxins are led to evacuate through the skin, we witness chronic skin conditions. 
One must first identify if there are any problems with digestion: low bowel flora, weak digestive fire or enzymes, lack of bile flow, problems with the liver (the seat of digestion). If there are problems here, the food will automatically turn into ama. 
You must next assess the patient’s diet as there are many foods which cannot make their way into the cells, automatically forming ama. These would include: nutbutters, soy products, hard aged cheeses, chia, hemp and pumpkin seeds, mushrooms, winter squashes, red meats, cold dairy products and bananas. 
Patients should also keep the following guidelines to optimize digestion:
  • sit while eating – don’t eat while walking or driving, on the go!
  • don’t eat too quickly – Vaidya Mishra used to say “give ample contact time with the saliva” – the saliva contains digesetive enzymes that help break down the food for digestion, if we don’t allow for enough contact time while chewing the stomach will have to work harder!
  • don’t overeat: when you get a feeling of satiation, stop eating! don’t continue the extra piece of cake or the next bite just because it tastes good! It might taste good but it won’t feel good and you’ll end up feeling tired, having acid stomach, etc.
  • don’t drink ice cold beverages with your meals: they “freeze” the digestive environment and make it hard to digest anything !
  • look at your food as you eat it: the brain receives a lot of information as to what you are eating and it communicates with your digestive tract to secrete the right amounts of deigstive enzymes needed. Keeping your mind engaged with what you are eating supports digestion. Watching TV or having intense emotional conversations will eating can result in poor digestion or even chronic digestive conditions.
If ama is produced, it quickly turns into ama visha if it is not addressed right away. I’ve seen many of my patients develop rashes during stressful periods of their lives – emotional stress negatively affects our digestion. 
One interesting note here, which is why we must always evaluate each patient individually and not develop a “protocol” to follow for each case of acne we see. Usually, we will see too much heat/acidity in the liver as one of the main causes for not only acne but for all skin conditions and rashes. The skin is showing you how hot the blood is and an overheated liver is usually the culprit behind the scenes heating up the blood. In addition, we usually find the patient has a faulty diet, which also makes the blood and skin impure. 
This, however, was not true in this patient’s case! She was raised in Jamaica on an extremely healthy diet, with two very health-conscious parents. She had no history of frequent pharmaceuticals which would have destroyed her gut, liver or other aspects of her digestion. Her liver wasn’t hot and was in fact very clean. 
The underlying problem in her case was that her thyroid gland was weak, which was preventing her gallbladder from releasing bile. The bile alkalizes the digestive juices coming from the stomach. Therefore, with lack of bile flow, her digestive juices were too acidic, forming acidic blood. So in her case, the overheated blood was coming from her gallbladder, which was traced back to her weak thyroid (which she inherited from both parents). This is why none of her attempts to clear up her acne in the past had worked. None of her doctors had attempted to or had been able to get to the root of her condition. This underscores how important it is to take each case individually as not all cases result from the same cause. 
Once you have figured out the root cause, whether it is digestive problems, diet, and what the patient is doing while they are eating, then you can begin focusing on detoxification – not the other way around! It makes no sense to start detoxifying a patient when they are automatically turning their food into toxins. Plus, these very hot toxins are heating up the liver and burning the channels. So before detoxification is introduced you have to make sure the channels are well lubricated and the liver has cooled down. 
We are so fortunate to have so many products Vaidya Mishra made for us to fix digestion: bhumi alma, DGL and fennel to cool down an over-heated liver, Apana Agni Balance to fix the enzymatic system in the gut, Daruhardira to stop allergic reactions in the gut, Propachaka for low digestive fire, probiotics to fertilize the gut so the friendly bacteria can grow, Pro Apana to fix the lining of the gut so the friendly bacteria can grow. 
We also have many other formulas for treating the skin in addition to herbs and spices such as: coriander tea or drops to direct the toxins away from the skin and into the urine; Manjistha to stop the reactivity of the toxins as they come through the skin; Semal plus products which are directly for treating acne (drops, clay and lotion). 
We also have the zinc bhasmas, which are nanoparticles of zinc, which absorb better into the cells unlike the current zinc supplements on the market. Zinc is great for controlling infection that can occur in the pores as the toxins sit there and are allowed to fester. 
Vaidya Mishra made it so easy to help us help our patients get well, and we will always be grateful for his hard work in developing these wonderful protocols and formulas for future generations to use.

Happiness, Consciousness, and Your Doshas

What advice does Ayurveda offer us for mental health and happiness? Can Ayurvedic protocols help reinstate that elusive state of happiness? Does Ayurveda have deep insights into why happiness eludes so many so much of the time? From the get-go, we can say in all confidence that the Ayurvedic approach is an integrative approach. That means: it takes into consideration every aspect of the individual and addresses all levels as a whole: mind, emotions, physical body, subtle body, environment, as well as “The Self” – the being level of life itself. And this larger holistic frame already carries the promise of a solution – if not many solutions since there are many more reasons things can go off, and many of them can be addressed on different levels. Ayurveda supplies us with a greater understanding of human mechanisms and offers varied tools. 
In this first part of my article, I will explore “mental health” issues in the light of the ancient writings of the ayurvedic sourcebook, the Charaka Samhita, as well as in the context of Vaidya Ramakant Mishra’s teachings – an eminent ayurvedic scholar and teacher. In the second installment, I will introduce Vaidya Mishra’s SVA understanding of “ojas” in its role for mental health and happiness. In the final and third installment, I will offer practical SVA tools and protocols that I’ve personally used successfully with clients to help reinstate emotional balance.
Root Causes of Mental Health Imbalances According to Ayurveda:
Pragyaparadha or the “Mistake of the Intellect”
Happiness, according to the vedic sourcebooks, is not what we take it to be in modern terms! It’s a state of inner well-being that does not depend solely on external factors (health, comfort, etc), but rather derives from a sense of identity. We either know and identify ourselves with who we are at the core, or we mistakenly mis-identify ourselves with that which we are not! That misidentification is the root cause of our misfortune and unhappiness! 
Succintly put in ayurvedic terms, that is “pragyaparadh.” Pragyaparadh is that state of the mistake of the intellect from which a sense of existential malaise, or an overall feeling of being ill-at-ease with oneself flows. 
You are NOT who you think you are – What?  
 In this context, the Ayurvedic approach to the pathogenesis of disease and mental suffering takes on new light and opens up new avenues for approaching the problem of unhappiness. Viewed as the Charaka Samhita presents the root cause: life as experienced within the limitations of the parts, leaving the individual unaware of the whole (Brooks, J. p.89), allows for new approaches and strategies. 
Psychologist, Satya Prakash Choudhary (2013) echoes this sentiment: 
“If one is possessive of true knowledge (sat), then one understands the unity in everything, the oneness of the Self and Universe, and hence, does not suffer from the afflictions of the ego. The erroneous belief of an individual as a separate being… arises out of ignorance.”
In a sense then Pragyaparadha a form of memory loss. We have forgotten who/what we are at the core. What our essential being consists of. According to the vedic sourcebooks, our “true identity,” our Self, transcends ordinary awareness. In the daily humdrum of events, we have forgotten who/what we are and have identified ourselves with the mundane superficial aspects of life, hijacking the deeper levels of awareness of being. Being, or the big Self is invisible but is at the basis of all that is visible. At the level of the intellect, through the five senses, one gets drawn into the material outer world of living, work, family, leisure, conflicts, and the problems of everyday reality. The individual is over-identified with sensory experience and temporal life. In my experience of growing up in and practicing Ayurveda in modern culture, there is not much acknowledgment of this essential Self or being and a pronounced focus of doing and accomplishing as being building blocks of a social and individual identity. 
Psycho-physical Expression of Mental Health Imbalances: The Doshas
The doshas manifest as mind–body types and form the subdoshas located in various organs and systems within the individual. Mental health issues caused by or deriving from physiological imbalances are understood and interpreted in the light of subdoshas. 
Subdoshas connected to depression. In the ancient Ayurvedic sourcebook, the Charaka Samhita, we read: hridaya chetana sthanam (Mishra, 2002, p. 2). Vaidya Mishra translates this verse as follows: hridaya is the heart, chet is consciousness, and sthanama means located/placed. He transaltes this as follows: consciousness is seated in the heart. This means that the mind and heart are intimately connected, since the heart is the dwelling place of consciousness. It also indicates that the sadhaka pitta subdosha that governs the heart, is responsible for processing/digesting emotions (2002, p. 3).  Vaidya Mishra said:
The main cause of depression is the lack of ability to process emotions in a timely fashion. Some people are able to process an emotion quickly, which means they are able to let go of it and move on with their lives. For others, the processing or “cooking” of thoughts is slow so the negative impression remains with them for a very long time and this impacts their current thoughts and emotions, resulting in depression (p. 3). 
Vaidya further explained that the agni, (fire) or metabolic mechanism associated with sadhaka pitta is responsible for the cooking or processing of emotions. The health of sadhaka pitta processes affect the metabolic processes or agni in every cell of the body, as well as the agni associated with each subdosha. The sadhaka agni of the heart is related to neuro-hormones. The neuro-hormones located in the heart send signals to the brain to register depression or happiness (Mishra, p. 3). In this sense, and following in the footsteps of Vaidya Mishra’s lucid exposition of the cryptic ancient ayurvedic texts, addressing and taking care of the sadhak pitta imbalance can help reinstate that original state of total happiness and obliterate that “forgetting” of our original true nature, our core Self. 
An individual can be born with low sadhaka pitta and agni levels are unique to each person. Agni can also become low due to emotional and physical trauma, poor nutrition, environmental pollution, and digestive problems. If low sadhaka agni continues without being corrected for a long time, it can lead to clinical depression (Mishra, p. 3), with symptoms such as the inability to enjoy normal pleasures and even bipolar disease. The solution, from an Ayurvedic perspective, is to offer procedures to increase agni and nourish sadhaka pitta, which are discussed in Part Three of my article (coming soon) for remedial interventions.
Subdoshas connected to postpartum depression. According to Mishra, (2002), after a baby is born, prana subdosha of vata dosha is aggravated and the digestive fire, or jataragni, is decreased to a very low point due to the exertion caused by birthing. This can lead to fluctuating emotions such as anxiety and depression. Ayurveda offers specific diet, daily routines, and massages that increase the agni to help process both food and emotions (Mishra, 2002, p. 7). 
Subdoshas connected to anxiety 
Anxiety is caused by many factors contributing to excess vata, which can be felt in one’s pulse in the subdoshas as apana and prana vata comprised of irregular movement of air and space. Vata’s imbalanced qualities are frenetic, dry, cold, unstable, and changing. Excessive vata shows up in the body as constipation (dryness), poor digestion, fatigue, and restlessness. It can present itself in the mind as disorganization, forgetfulness, anxiety, phobias, insomnia, and insecurity . If it is not corrected, vata can continue to increase and may turn into mania, anorexia, attention deficit disorder, and other learning problems.
   Behaviors that contribute to increased vata are excess stimuli such as overindulgence of internet games, excess cold foods, irregular schedules, excess travel, excessive exercise, and excessive sexual behavior. More serious vata imbalances can results from: trauma, car accidents, fasting, eating disorders, lack of sleep, drug abuse, exposure to constant unpredictable behaviors and anything that overwhelms the senses. When vata goes high, pitta dosha gets disturbed and this in turn makes kapha dosha go out. The way to address this problem is to offer lifestyle recommendations, SVA herbal synergies, Ayurvedic hands-on treatments and diet that will help reduce vata and balance it, all in conjunction to counseling.  
In the upcoming sectino of this article, I will discuss the SVA perspective of “ojas” and “ama” and their role in emotional balance and mental health.

Is Ghee ok to use to lubricate the nostrils when they are dry?

“Dear Vaidya,
I am using 2 drops of ghee daily in my nose especially now in the dry season. Is this the best thing to use for dry sensitive nostrils or do you have something more enriching?

Dear Carol: ghee is good, but it may be a little clogging. In addition, it is good to think of the whole picture and consider not just the physical but the vibrational channels that run through the nostrils as well. In this sense, I would suggest that you use SVA Ida and Pingala oil instead. This will not only lubricate your physical nasal channels, but it will also unclog your vibrational nadi-s, your “ida” and “pingala.” Ida is the vibrational channel that receives and circulates Soma – the cooling and nurturing lunar energy. Pingala, on the other hand, receives and circulates Agni – the fiery transformational energy that runs through your right nostril. Try this oil. Apply two drops at night before bed. If you live in a cold windy climate, then you may also apply two drops in each nostril in the morning. If you need to, you may also apply additional drops during the day as needed. 
  • Facilitates greater pranic flow in the nadis
  • Enhances the coordination between the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna
  • Lubricates the nasal pathways
  • Helps the Ida & Pingala resist the entry of corrupt pranic energy
  • Supports Pranayama (yogic breathing)
What’s in it?
‘Ida & Pingala Nasya Oil Herbal Synergy’ (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary herbal blend) with Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) and Nut grass (Cyperus rotundus) in a base of Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis), and Sesame (Sesamum indicum) oil. 
This oil was designed to balance and enliven the ida (lunar energy reception) and pingala (solar energy reception) nadis (vibrational channels) of the head. It delivers immediate support to these nadis which, in this EMF era, often get into trouble. EMFs enter the body through several routes including the mouth, eyes, and the nostrils with each and every breath. The symptoms of EMF poisoning vary from person to person; but in severe cases it causes muscular twitches, itching, dryness, and burning sensations.  Ida & Pingala Nasya Oil empowers these nadis to receive more pranic energy in a balanced way. Even more, it helps these nadis cope with EMF vibrational pollution, making them more intelligent to filter and resist their entry into the body.
What is Nasya-?
“Nasya” literally is that which is best suited for the nose: Maharishi Sushruta puts it this way: nasya is “the medicinal herb or herbalized oil introduced into the nasal cavity” (Su-chi-40:21)
Nasya Karma: is a vital part of “Panch Karma”
It should be done under the supervision of your Pancha Karma expert. However, there is a gentler form of “nasya” that can be adopted on a daily basis in order to get the Shehara (lubricating effect) of the procedure. Daily lubrification may be done with a variety of oils; however, Vaidya Mishra’s Nasya oil is Tridoshic in its effect unlike most oils, even just plain sesame. It lubricates the nasal cavity without irritation. In addition, it has a gentle thermogenic effect on the nostrils.
There are two kinds of home nasya: 1) Shehara: lubricating; 2) verechara: cleansing. Vaidya Mishra’s Nasya oil carries both properties.
In terms of V.P.K. info – it balances: Udana, vyana, & prana vata; as well as shleshaka kapha. So if you are feeling spacy due to too much mental activity this may help. Vaidya’s Nasya Oil is also a wonderful companion on your flights – a drop in each nostril will help keep you grounded as you take off and travel long distances.
According to the ancient vedic rishis, the best time to do home nasya is first thing in the morning, before rising out of bed. But during cold Autumn season you may repeat as needed during the day and before bedtime as well.
