Who is Shakti?! plus Navaratri STOREWIDE SALE! SV Ayurveda Newsletter Oct 18, 2018, # 40, Vol 8

The 9 day recitation of 700 verses narrating the exploits of Goddess Durga and her victory over the demon Mahishasura constitutes an annual festival in India that is probably as old as time itself. It is known as Navaratri. The earliest Mother Goddess figurines unearthed in India have been carbon-dated to approximately 20,000 BCE. Thousands of female statuettes dated as early as c. 5500 BCE have been recovered at Mehrgarh, one of the most important Neolithic sites in world archaeology. 
Navaratri is a celebration of the Goddess Durga or Chandika, the manifestation of cosmic creational impulses in the form of Shakti – dynamic energy or power. Shaktism does not mean favoring the feminine at the expense of the masculine. In fact, both male and female are said to be inactive in the absence of Shakti. In the Devi-Bhagavata Purana, a central Shakta scripture, the Devi declares:

“I am Manifest Divinity, Unmanifest Divinity, and Transcendent Divinity. I am Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, as well as Saraswati, Laxmi, and Parvati. I am the Sun and I am the Stars, and I am also the Moon. I am all animals and birds, and I am the outcaste as well, and the thief. I am the low person of dreadful deeds, and the great person of excellent deeds. I am Female, I am Male, and I am Neuter.” 
Shakti is the creative energy at play without which Shiva or the power of silence cannot express itself. Adi Shankara, South Indian Vedic visionary, poet, and philopsher, says it best in his famous hymn, the Saundaryalahari (c. 800 CE): “If Shiva is united with Shakti, he is able to create. If he is not, he is incapable even of stirring.” In this sense they are co-dependent, or in the words of the nineteenth-century saint Ramakrishna, one of the most influential figures of modern Bengali Shaktism, they are actually one: “Kali is none other than Brahman. That which is called Brahman is really Kali. She is the Primal Energy. When that Energy remains inactive, I call It Brahman, and when It creates, preserves, or destroys, I call It Shakti or Kali. What you call Brahman I call Kali. Brahman and Kali are not different. They are like fire and its power to burn: if one thinks of fire one must think of its power to burn. If one recognizes Kali one must also recognize Brahman; again, if one recognizes Brahman one must recognize Kali. Brahman and Its Power are identical. It is Brahman whom I address as Shakti or Kali.”

Now is the Time for transdermal Vit D!
Autumn is here and for most of us it is time to resume using our Transdermal Vitamin D – as the days get shorter and we have less opportunity to expose our skin to the sun. 
Most people who live far from the equator will become depleted in Vitamin D – you can test your levels through blood work.
You do not want to take Vit D orally as everything you swallow has to be processed by the liver and the digestive system and this puts a great strain on those organs – specially since Vit D is a highly condensed fatty molecule. In addition, this is definitely not what our ancestors would have recommended. Flooding the bloodstream with high doses puts a strain on the liver and can result in different imbalances. 
Fortunately, Vaidya Mishra, my Ayurvedic mentor, developed a Transdermal application to be taken from the skin directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver. This not only supply Vit D safely and effectively, but the formulas also contain a blend of ancient ayurvedic herbs to help support the body in its absorption of this heavy fatty molecule.
Vitamin D – which in fact is not a vitamin but a secosteroid – is not only good for the bones but prevents autoimmune reactions and depression, and so much more. Many times, even when you are orally ingesting high doses of Vit D your blood work shows that levels keep going down. This is because the body is not able to process and absorb it along with other reasons. And yet, as you’ll read in my upcoming book on Ayurveda and the Thyroid, Vit D is crucial for thyroid and glandular health.
With Vaidya Mishra’s transdermal formulations it is now as easy as rubbing it unto your skin or remembering to use your daily deodorant because Vaidya made some Vit D deodorants since the armpits contain fatty hormonal glands that further facilitate the absorption of the Vit D molecules! Apply the cream or the roll-on on the lower arms from the elbows to the wrists – this is an easy area to access. But remember you can apply it anywhere. Use at least one half teaspoon for each application. You can’t overdose when using transdermally as the skin will absorb exactly what it needs. Use twice a day for best results.
How Much?!
SVA Vitamin D TD (transdermal cream) contains 3400 iu (International Units) of Vit D3 per gram. This cream is based on an ancient formula from Vaidya’s family tradition used to treat severe cases of Vit D deficiency. Of course, it contains herbs and other ingredients that deliver and facilitate the absorption of Vitamin D without exerting a load on the internal organs, especially the liver. So when you use one gram of the SVA transdermal cream, your body will be receiving 3400 IU of Vit D3. For practical purposes, this amount approximately equals to 1/4 tsp. You can use a designated spoon/scooper to get an accurate amount each time you use it.
You may apply this cream and gently rub it on the pulse areas of both wrists. Alternately, you may apply it on your armpits.  The armpits’ area contain fatty glands that can facilitate the absorption of Vit D. This i one of the reasons Vaidya also formulated a deodorant that contains Vit D. 
When you are applying the Shea Butter base cream, be sure to ‘melt’ it by massaging it onto your skin, since it has a thicker consistency. 
Measuring the exact dosage of the Vit D roll-on, in terms of Vit D content, is a little more challenging. We suggest you use the transdermal cream in addition to the deodorant.

Multiple Food and Environmental Sensitivities : the SVA Solution

This is another one of those health problems that weren’t necessarily written about in the ancient ayurvedic texts: what to do with patients whose immune systems are hyper-reacting because of disruption of the digestive/immune systems due to overuse of pharmaceuticals in the past? Through his insight and deep ayurvedic wisdom, Vaidya Mishra recognized the hetu, or underlying cause, for these hypersensitivities. He also taught us how to fix it. Let me explain.
 I have seen thousands of patients over the past 30 years of my practice who have developed numerous sensitivities to food and airborne allergens/toxins. The common pattern that always emerges in these patients is a history of taking too many antibiotics in their youth. Or there could be a history of several years on birth control pills, or both.These medications destroy the friendly bacteria in the gut and overheat the liver as they course through it. This combination of interfering with both the liver and the gut creates the perfect medium for food sensitivities/allergies.

Many of these patients report to me that they feel much better avoiding gluten, dairy and numerous other foods. What I tell them is that yes, while they may feel better avoiding the foods, the real problem is not the food, but their body’s reaction to the food. This is what needs fixing. And by addressing the various problems at their root level, the sensitivities will go away so they can go back to eating the offending food(s) and can tolerate airborne allergens better. If you just identify and avoid the foods, fragrances, etc. that are bothering you, in reality you are not fixing anything, you’re just letting your out-of-control-immune system push you deeper and deeper into a corner. Many of the people I see have dozens of food allergies and report to me that they can only tolerate a few food items.
 
The immune system is intelligent — it knows to attack viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. And it knows not to attack foods, pollens, dust, and your body. However, if the various parts of the immune system get disturbed, then the immune system goes into attack mode and now all bets are off! You start realizing certain foods bother you, so you avoid them. Then slowly but surely the list begins to grow, adding more foods to the list of potential food allergies. Then you notice perfume bothers you, or exhaust fumes, or you can’t walk down the aisles in the supermarket which smell of cleaning agents…and the list becomes longer and longer.
 
And, if you’re like this patient, you go to the top immunologists in your area (she went to the Chief of Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania), they run tests and tell you all the tests were great, there are no food or airborne allergies, so you are left to leave the office feeling frustrated, or perhaps all these symptoms are in your head. Sometimes doctors will recommend antidepressants when they are at a loss in cases like this, which only adds fuel to the fire.
 
The other scenario is that your doctor finds dozens of food allergies, has you avoid the offending foods and puts you on antihistamines and steroids. You might feel fine for a while, but since you are not actually fixing the immune system, the symptoms come back once you finish the medications.
 
What needs to be done is to fix the imbalances created from all those medications in the past. Besides antibiotics and birth control pills, immunizations, acid reflux medications, and steroids also disrupt the normal immune system functions.
 
The problem I encounter when trying to teach people or doctors a protocol for fixing a particular problem, is that there is no protocol to use in each patient. But I can give you an idea of some of the things that need to be done. The trick to treating anything is that you have to identify what needs to be done in your particular case. Even if you don’t think you could come up with your own treatment plan, at least you know you can reach out to an SVA practitioner and let them guide you in dealing with your situation.
 
So here are some problems that might need attention, so that you can slowly reverse your hyper-sensitive immune system:
 
  1. First address the gut flora. Vaidya made “Prebiotic Drops” which act like fertilizer, to be taken before lassi, takra,yogurt or the Protren probiotics we recommend. These drops encourage the growth of the friendly bacteria.
  2. He then made “Pro-Apana” drops, which fix the lining of the gut so the friendly bacteria can grow. What we noticed was that people who had taken so many antibiotics in the past had not only depletion of the friendly bacteria, but also the lining that the friendly bacteria grows in. Keep in mind: the gut is basically a mucous layer with friendly bacteria growing in it. The friendly bacteria train the immune system to stay intelligent and not hyper-react. The mucous layer is where these friendly bacteria live. Pro-Apana helps to build up the mucous layer, or you could drink some slippery elm tea (1 tsp in a quart of boiled water, sipped slowly for four hours after making it). Slippery elm also heals the lining where the friendly bacteria grow.
  3. “Bhumi Amla drops” are tremendous in cooling the heat in the liver and bringing the intelligence back to the liver so it stops reacting to food and instead does what it’s supposed to do: break down the food when you swallow it, processing the food and transforming it from rasa dhatu to rakta dhatu. This means that it converts the blood plasma to the blood tissue. Keep this in mind: everything you swallow has to go through the liver. The problem here is that the liver is not only the seat of detoxification, but the seat of digestion. So when it overheats from too many acidic toxins found in the pharmaceuticals and fast foods, it starts to attack the food, which is why you feel reactions to the food. The liver, in essence, is oxidizing your food, turning it into ama visha, or poison, rather than processing it correctly.
  4. Many people aren’t making enough digestive enzymes. The answer here isn’t to take the digestive enzymes, but to fix the enzyme system in the gut. To do this, Vaidya made “Apana Agni Balance” drops. You might also try eating a one-inch cube of papaya or pineapple after lunch or dinner, utilizing the natural enzymes found in these two fruits.
  5. Many people have old fat-soluble toxins (such as birth control pills, steroids, and numerous other pharmaceuticals) stuck in the liver, disrupting its function. Many people state that they took these medications years ago and don’t think they should be bothering them now, but the fact that they are fat-soluble means they can be stuck in the various tissues. This is because unlike the water-soluble toxins which are dumped out in the urine, they have to be processed out by the liver into the bile and if the bile isn’t flowing, they keep reabsorbing back into the physiology. Which brings me to my next point:
  6. Bile sludge: This is a huge issue that I see every single day in my practice. And yet I don’t hear that much about it in both the Ayurvedic literature and the literature available to holistic doctors here in the West. Which is why I wrote a whole chapter on the gall bladder in my upcoming book. It is amazing how easily the bile becomes thick and sludge-like — this can happen numerous times. My book will go into great detail as to what causes this, what can happen when the bile doesn’t flow, and what we need to do about it. For the sake of brevity, I’ll mention a few things here. 
     
           If you are belching, have gas, acid reflux and a dull ache under the ribs on the right, then
your bile isn’t flowing, as it is now very thick. You can thin it out by sipping plain hot water, or hot water with a pinch of Indian Sarsaparilla in it. Try taking triphala tablets, or Triphala for High Pitta (only on www.chandika.com)  if there is any excess acid in the digestive tract. Avoid foods which would thicken the bile more: cold dairy, ice-cold foods and beverages, nut butters, red meats, soy products, and hard aged cheeses. Other good remedies to try are Haritaki as in the Prakrit tablets, or SVA Easy Lax, and Neem herb or drops. Try eating cooked red beets, as they are the best food for promoting the flow of bile out of the gallbladder. If your bile isn’t flowing, then the toxins that the liver dumped into it will reabsorb back into your body, as just stated.
     7. If you have a history of taking any of these pharmaceuticals, it is necessary to clean out 
          the liver, but you must keep it cool as you do so. You can try Liver Pro Drops, or  
          Guduchi Satwa, which is excellent for removing old residues of pharmaceuticals out of 
          the liver.  
      8. Cooking with vegetable oils, such as mustard, peanut, safflower, sunflower, corn, canola, margarine, and ghee made from margarine will give you a fatty liver. Stop eating these immediately and take “Mankand drops,” as it will regenerate your liver. Favor olive oil (cook with water, never alone), or Mom’s Ghee, or some sesame oil when you want to saute things.
 
 
These are the numerous problems I see on a daily basis with our patients. By first identifying and then fixing these various problems, the immune system will settle down and work the way it’s supposed to: protecting you from pathogens but not hyper-reacting to everything in the outside world.
 
By incorporating these various tools Vaidya Mishra has left us with, I have been able to help thousands of patients like the one depicted in this video, even when modern medicine has failed them.

Emotional, Mental, Vibrational & Physical Health!
In Vaidya Mishra’s Shaka Vansiya Ayurveda lineage, the health of the channels is very important. Circulatory channels have to be “in shape” – maintain elasticity and aperture for flow; in addition they have to maintain optimal intelligent functionality – sending and receiving messages. Wait! What does all this mean?! What “channels” are these?
In classical Ayurveda we find a discussion of two kinds of channels:
  • vibrational channels, called nadi-s; 
  • physical channels, called srota-s. 
The nadis carry the unseen vibrational energetic materials, including sound, that cannot, as of yet, be visible or audible through or experienced by our physical senses of sight or hearing; the srotas carry physical materials – microscopic as well as macroscopic.
You may be making the best of health promoting choices and decisions with the best diet, the best lifestyle and routine, but if you do not address the health of your channels – physical and vibrational – ensuring that they are in top shape and functioning optimally – you will not get the health benefits you are seeking.
Why?
Channels need to fulfill their task of circulating content – physical or vibrational – in terms of time-bound reception, time-bound circulation, and time-bound interaction. Things move in our body, and all things need to move harmoniously together, in relation to eachother, almost as in symphonic rhythm. Channels can be slowed down due to several factors. If some channels are slow, or blocked, or shrunk, and if they slow down the process in an even minimal way, it affects the health of the entire physiology. Maintaining the intelligence of our channels 100% is a too often overlooked disease-inducing factor. The reception, delivery, interaction, and elimination of materials has to happen in a timely and complete manner.
Both types of channels, physical and vibrational, have to interact with each other through a non-invasive natural flow, without overwhelming the body. The channel pathways and systems in our physiology are highly sophisticated and need optimum intelligence for full maintenance. “Intelligent maintenance” includes external and internal factors. We live in the midst of poisonous, toxic vibrational materials saturating the environment, such as: EMF, EMR, toxic fumes emanating from chemicals found in the raw materials are homes are made from, in the materials our cars are made of, in the clothes that we buy, or the clothes that we wash with toxic synthetic cleaners, etc. In addition to this, negative emotions and energies such as anger, stress, depression, disturb our vibrational channels, muting the agni in our emotional hearts, and further causing damage. Ingesting toxic food that makes ama, or amavisha, or that contains garavisha disturbs both physical and vibrational channels – all food that you eat nourishes and nurtures the brain and nervous system. When you ingest polluted food, you diminish the intelligence of your own nervous system and affect the functioning of your vibrational self.
But how can you tell that your channels are in trouble? 
The immediate response and reaction from clients whenever channels are mentioned is: “the doctor told me my veins and arteries are not clogged!” We are always happy to explain to them what we mean by the health of the channels in SVA by asking them the following questions:
1. do you ever feel that your breathing is not 100%? For example, you want to breath but feel a certain tightness in your chest – without having any known medical reason(s)? When you want to breathe deeper but are just not able to? When you feel your breathing stays shallow?
2. Do you wake up with stiff fingers, hands, joints overall? Achy muscles and body? Or even swollen hands and feet? (Keep in mind again this is only in the situation where you do not have a diagnosed medical ailment).
3. Do you feel foggy, emotionally and mentally unsettled and ungrounded? Seeking clarity and yet not being able to achieve it? 
If you answered yes – or even “maybe a little” to any of the above, then you are experiencing physical and/or vibrational channel clogging. Looking into your diet for culprit food items that are known to be physically and/or vibrationally clogging by nature, and eliminating them, would be your first step. Some of these food items are specific members of the nightshade family, such as: potato, tomato, bell-pepper, eggplant. Otherwise soy is also highly clogging, since it is derived from a large bean, the soy bean, that is known to carry heavy properties, like other larger beans, such as: garbanzo, lima, navy, kidney beans, etc. Avoid all large beans and favor lentils instead (mung, red lentil, French lentil, etc). ALL processed foods are clogging. All left-overs are clogging. So are large bananas! Try to eliminate or minimize their use.
Otherwise, doing some gentle daily yoga exercise to support overall circulation can only help you in all ways.

Why Do you Need Transdermal Magnesium? With Dr T; SVA in Puerto Vallarta with Carol Nace, and always more! SV Ayurveda Newsletter Sept 13, 2018, # 35, Vol 8

What’s Magnesium & Why Do you Need It?
Magnesium is a key mineral that your body can’t do without: it helps produce energy, in addition it regulates blood sugar and chemical reactions in the body. A great number of bodily functions depend on Magnesium levels: Magnesium supports the functioning of more than 300 enzymes in the body.These enzymes are responsible for managing the functioning of our DNA and regulating cellular energy production in the brain, muscles, and heart. We also need magnesium to produce many key proteins, and even for the production of glutathione, the body’s “master antioxidant.” But there’s more!
SV Ayurveda Pulse reading is an amazing diagnostic tool, that gives the practitioner access to information that would otherwise not be available. One of the many things I love about it is it allows you to detect hardening of the arteries.
The arteries have 3 layers to them all of which contain muscle tissue to help pump the blood through, as well as elastic fibers that help the arteries stretch and recoil with the pumping of the heart.
Magnesium is found in the muscle layer that contracts in order to allow the blood to flow through. But Magnesium is also present in the elastic layer that keeps the arteries nice and pliable to keep the blood pressure down. 
So it is not a surprise that Magnesium deficiency is associated with such a wide range of conditions: insomnia; chronic fatigue; stress and anxiety; restless leg syndrom; high blood pressure; osteoporosis; fibromyalgia; migraines; hormonal imbalances; even diabetes and cancer.
Watch Your Stress Levels, Diet, & Caffeine Intake
As we age our magnesium levels may drop due to many factors: stress; any/all pharmaceuticals deplete magnesium; or a diet poor full of preservatives and/or deficient in Magnesium content. 
Studies show that Magnesium deficiency is rampant in America. It’s been estimated that more than 50% of adult Americans don’t consume sufficient foods high in magnesium to get the required daily amount. This is directly correlated to the high amounts of processed foods Americans consume. Too much alcochol or caffeine on a regular basis also depletes Magnesium levels. 
The Role of Magnesium in Relation to Calcium
But there is a very quick and important other factor that I like to address with patients in my clinic as well: as magnesium levels go low, calcium slowly infiltrates into both the muscle and elastic layers. One of the roles magnesium plays is to layer the outside of the cells and keep calcium molecules from seeping in. Magnesium softens and calcium hardens. Without Magnesium to fulfill this role, you may end up with hardening of the arteries. 
This can be reversed! We teach the patients how to use various transdermal magnesium products applied/rubbed unto the skin to revert such hardening. After several months of consistent application you can actually detect the hardening in the arteries dissipating. The arteries become pliable again.
In general, the arteries of young people tend to exhibit elasticity and are pliable, while in elderly patients they can become stiff and hard, although I have found some hardening in younger patients as well. 
It is most rewarding to experience an older person’s pulse literally feel elastic and young again as their magnesium levels go back up and their arteries become pliable again.
This is one of many reasons why magnesium is also good for lowering blood pressure, as the arteries can now expand easily again as the heart keeps at its constant job of pumping the blood.
So How Much Magnesium Daily?
How much Magnesium should you be having daily? According to the National Insitute of Health, here’s a table for the daily intake of Magnesium based on age:
  • Children 1-3 years: 80 mg
  • Children 4-8 years: 130 mg
  • Children 9-13 years: 240 mg
  • Teens 14-18 years: boys 410 mg and girls 360 mg
  • Adults 19-30 years: men 400 mg and women 310 mg
  • Adults 31+ years: men 420 mg and women 320 mg
BUT Why not Magnesium supplements?
They are available over-the-counter at most supermarkets and pharmacies! But you can overdose if you are taking them orally. In addition, Vaidya Mishra always reminded us to go for the gentler way: it is preferable to eat whole foods containing magnesium naturally to prevent a magnesium deficiency. Any oral supplementation needs to go through the digestive organs including the liver and puts additional strain on the system, so it’s best to avoid. So it’s best to supplement through your diet, or transdermally (unless you have a diagnosed health condition, or have to take medications that may lead or result in Magnesium deficiency and need medically approved doses). TRANSDERMAL supplementation is the best safest route because YOU CAN NOT OVERDOSE! This was the ayurvedic genius of my mentor, Vaidya Mishra, he taught us that the skin will absorb and let in only as much as it needs. If for no other reason at all, this is why you should always only go the transdermal route with supplementation!
Magnesium Rich Foods
Here’s a list of Magnesium rich – as well as SVA recommended – foods you can add to your diet. Make note that some food items that are also promoted as being rich in Magnesium are NOT on this SVA list! Such as soy/tofu; large bean (black); edamame; pumpkin seeds; etc are NOT part of this chart.We have learnt through SVA that they slow down digestion, clog the channels, and also in the case of soy, interfere with hormonal balance. In SVA terms, some food items may be rich but hard to digest and absorb and therefore are less or not at all recommended for daily consumption. 
Magnesium Rich Foods
  • Almonds are nutrient-dense and full of healthy fats and protein. Their high fiber content helps regulate blood sugar and reduces hunger, making it a great snack for those looking to manage their weight. Better yet, just one ounce of almonds contains 80mg of magnesium! Make sure to soak and blanche them for more flavor and digestibility. Or dry toast them. Or even better, saute in some Mom’s Ghee with Mom’s masala and add a squirt of lime and fresh chopped cilantro! 
  • Avocados contain 58mg of magnesium in a single fruit. Healthy fats present in avocados are great for heart and brain health and actually contain more potassium than bananas! Anyway you eat them they are great for you. Try to avoid eating at night as they can be heavy. Avocados have 58 mg of magnesium per fruit which is 16% of your needs for the day, and they also contain healthy fats (which are good for heart and brain health). Avocados are high in B vitamins and Vitamin K as well.
  • Raisins are a delicious super-healthy snack. They carry 14 mg of Magnesium in a 1.5 (a small box) of raisins. You can soak them along with almonds for a healthy daily snack on the go! Or saute them as well with Mom’s ghee and some Mom’s masala and a pinch of Soma Salt for a great sweet sour salty and spicy snack!
  • Quinoa: is a delicious seed that can be prepared like rice, and mixed with rice! It’s known for its many health benefits, including a high protein and mineral content.One cup of cooked quinoa has 118 mg of magnesium.
  • Cashews: Another healthy snacking nut, cashews are also a good source of magnesium. One ounce has 74 mg of the mineral. Eat cashews by themselves or add them to a side salad for dinner.
  • Wheat, oatmeal, bran cereal: most whole grains are a good source of magnesium, but whole wheat flour wins with 160 mg per cup. Use whole wheat instead of white flour for baking, and buy whole wheat bread at the store – or even better, make your own! 
  • Cultured yoghurt – plain and preferably home made and fresh with no additives or fruits or sugar. Yoghurt contains 30mg of Magnesium per cup and is a superb source of protein. Omega-­3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and probiotics, which are all also found in yogurt, make this one nutrient-rich, gut-­healthy snack.
  • Spinach is packed with Magnesium, providing 157mg in a single cup. Additionally, this leafy green has many other vitamins and minerals that help optimize magnesium absorption. NEVER EAT SPINACH RAW! Here again, Vaidya reminded us to always cook leafy greens such as Spinach, because they are rich in oxylic acid that that pulls out and may deplete your body of Magnesium when used raw. This is why Vaidya recommended that you cook the leafy green in his delicious Green Protein Recipe before blending them in into a smoothie texture!
  • Sesame seeds: You can dry toast sesame seeds and add a tsp to your breakfast or any meal throughout the day. They are a great source of calcium and one tablespoon of sesame seeds has 32 mg of magnesium.

Synbiotic SVA Skin-Care: What’s That?
If our body creates its own friendly bacteria, why do we need to use symbiotic (prebiotic and probiotic) foods, supplements and skincare? It’s simple; we are depleting our own friendly bacteria through the use of antibiotics, environmental toxins, poor diet, parabens, preservatives, highly acidic food, acidic personal care products, excess alcohol intake, too many anti-bacterial solutions in skin products, chemical peels and more. The overuse of antibiotics is of particular concern as antibiotics not only kill germs and disease, they also kill beneficial bacteria. Simply put, antibiotics kill without prejudice. Over time, these etiological factors have altered our friendly bacteria so much that we have depleted our immune system and we are more susceptible to disease and illness.
The use of probiotics as a complement to a healthy diet and lifestyle is not new, and has been documented in the Vedas and used for thousands of years for digestive, gastro-intestinal, urogenital, auto-immune and skin ailments. Up until recently, probiotics have always been ingested internally, but are now available as topical solutions that directly improve the composition of the skin’s microflora and friendly bacteria. A growing body of scientific evidence and research is showing that in addition to certain foods and supplements, topical creams, ointments and clays containing certain live and friendly bacteria can alleviate and prevent a variety of skin conditions and symptoms. (see list of sample references at the end of this article).
Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and is full of little ecosystems that need to be balanced in order to function optimally. Through its layers we absorb the universal pranic energy we need to sustain our life, as well as protect us from hazardous effects of environmental toxins such as chemicals, EMF and EMR (electromagnetic fields and radiation). Our skin also supports our immune system helping to prevent infections. By supporting our skin with prebiotics and probiotics we can reestablish a state of balance and optimize the naturally occurring friendly bacteria in our bodies. Remember, our food is our medicine and our skin is an organ, so feeding our skin adequately with nature-derived nourishment will help restore its balance, luster and vibrancy.
Low levels of friendly bacteria in our skin shows up as symptoms of dry and rough skin, thinning and scaly skin, lack of resistance against environmental and seasonal changes and allergies, and flare-ups related to auto-immune conditions. Common bothersome and often painful (both physically and mentally) skin conditions include; eczema, acne, psoriasis, rosacea, allergies, dermatitis, rashes etc.
Synbiotic Skin Care
The symbiotic approach of using prebiotics and probiotics in skincare is a straightforward one; reduce the amount of bad bacteria, while preserving and supporting the beneficial bacteria that protect our skin from infections and other environmental effects. But it should be noted that for optimal results, the application of synbiotics on the skin should be a coordinated one as bacterial equilibrium on the skin can be easily disturbed. The topical application of prebiotics will promote the growth of beneficial bacterial and inhibit harmful bacteria. The topical application of probiotics provides a preventative and alleviating effect of skin issues. Together, they provide a balanced approach that improves the function of the skin and supports the overall immune system. The skin acts as a barrier against harsh chemical and vibrational environmental effects that we sometimes cannot avoid and therefore requires our long-term care and attention.
What are the key differences between conventional antibacterial skincare products and synbiotic skincare products?
Conventional anti-bacterial skincare products reduce all bacterial growth, good and bad. Synbiotic skincare products fight and limit the growth of infectious bad bacteria, yet preserve and stimulate beneficial and friendly bacteria. Probiotics also aid the skin in absorbing nutrients, sooth inflammation, and boost immune function.
When evaluating your use of synbiotic, prebiotic and probiotic skincare, it is important that you research the validity of the products and educate yourself sufficiently. It is also key to understand that true health is not simply about treating symptoms – it is about considering the mind, body and soul as a whole entity.
The Charak Samhita[1] teaches us that Ayurvedic healing should have a three-pronged or tri-sutra approach; we should understand the etiological factors of those we are healing (hetu sutra), we should analyze the symptoms (lingam sutra), and third, we should use therapeutics (aushadhi gyanam sutra) to prevent and heal. Etiological factors are risks factors that contribute to the cause of a disease and those specifically related to our skin may include; the use of antibiotics, unnatural preservatives, acidic food, intake of high sulphur foods, excessive alcohol, chemical-based personal care items, makeup and sunscreens. The etiological factors will cause symptoms that manifest as dryness, roughness, premature wrinkles, lack of resistance to environment fluctuations, lack of glow, flare-ups related to auto-immune deficiencies, as well as thinning and scaling. Therapeutics should be offered as guidelines in avoiding etiological factors, using safe cleansing agents for our skin, and supplementing our skin with prebiotics (discussed below) and probiotics to support the friendly bacteria.
Vaidya’s SVA Probiotic Line
Vaidya Mishra has developed the SVA pre-and-probiotic facial cleansers, clays, creams and soaps to target common skin ailments, provide anti-aging benefits, and support an environment for healthy and friendly bacteria to thrive. The proprietary formulations are based on ancient Vedic texts, time-tested research studies and practice by the SVA Ayurvedic lineage, as well as basic universal truths and philosophical concepts.
