Hormones are “apar ojas” in ayurveda. And there are specific recommendation for men and women. For men we have a specific Tribulus, Deer antler, Ashwagandha to support the male stamina, support male ojas. For optimal testosterone levels.
For women: we need to balance estrogen and progesterone. we have Shatavari drops, Zinc/Yasad drops. I also advise to eat more pineapple and papaya, asparagus. And cut out all processed white sugar. 
For men, start with Tribulus. VJK is a great formulation. In addition to Sadhaka Pitta balance drops.

Clinical experience counts for something. When you see over 100,000 patients over a 35-year span of a lifetime, many patterns start to emerge where you can see lots of causes and effects, even before research bares them out.
For example, it became apparent to me early on in my practice that people who cooked with vegetable oils like canola, sunflower oil and others usually developed a fatty liver, even without the use of alcohol. I never saw any research on this, but I saw it over and over in my patients, and when I told them to eliminate the use of these oils and switch over to olive oil and ghee and gave them various herbs to heal their liver, the fatty liver totally reversed.
I saw hundreds and hundreds of children develop food allergies and sensitivities from taking way too many antibiotics for recurring infections, and thankfully watched the allergies go away once we restored the friendly bacteria in the gut and settled down the hot and angry liver. 
I also noticed how my patients who had thyroid problems at the same time had problems with their gall bladder, which I described in great detail in my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda.
When you have a very sick patient staring at you on the treatment table, desperate for help, you don’t have the luxury of waiting for research to discover what you have been seeing clinically for years. You just roll up your sleeves and do what you instinctively know what you have to do, based on the experience you’ve gained from the hundreds of patients who presented before them with the same symptoms.
I remember many years ago I began seeing problems emerge in our menopausal patients who were taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It seemed that many of them were developing breast cancer. It was a very obvious cause and effect that I saw over and over and over again.
I started telling women to avoid it and showed them how nature gave us a bounty of herbs that could help them overcome their menopausal symptoms, without the side effects of the synthetic drugs.

Then, the Women’s Health Initiative study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute found out what I had been seeing clinically: they tested 161,000 women over a span of several years and discovered that indeed taking HRT did in fact increase the risk for not only breast cancer, but also for heart disease, stroke, blood clots and urinary incontinence. Not by a little, but a lot. So much so that they had to stop the study in its tracks because the women who were in the group who were taking the HRT were dropping like flies, developing high rates of all these problems.
Thankfully, an alarm was sent out and at least 50% of the women in the country stopped taking their HRT. And as predicted, the next year the rate of breast cancer dropped dramatically, lower than it had ever dropped before, despite all the breast cancer research which had been done hoping to find a way to decrease the epidemic.
I remember at the time thinking that if we could only take it one step further — if they could somehow get the young girls off the birth control pill, we would see the rate of breast cancer go down even more dramatically.
And again, I have come to this conclusion by seeing so many patients through the years who have developed breast cancer have one thing in common: a large majority of them have a history of taking birth control pills. The longer they have remained on them the more likely they are to develop it.This includes the patches, the vaginal rings and IUD’s all laced with these chemical hormones.
Let’s see why taking synthetic hormones might not be the way to go. First of all, the hormones that your body makes are highly intelligent. They are produced by the ovaries, and are targeted to certain areas to exert their influence. They are then removed from the body and then new hormones are made. All this happens through intelligent feedback loops originating in the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. They sense when the hormones are low, signals are sent out to the ovaries to produce them, and they fluctuate up and down during a woman’s monthly cycle depending on this feedback loop.
All of these functions can be altered immensely by synthetic hormones with grave consequences to your health. Why? Because these are not natural hormones but instead the toxic synthetic versions of the hormones your body would produce. And your body has never seen anything like these at any time in the history of mankind. 
While yes, they might be able to do a few of the same things that hormones do, attaching to your body’s receptors like your natural hormones do, kind of like a key fitting into a lock. But they won’t necessarily open the door all the way. You will definitely get a different outcome from these drugs than the intelligent hormones your body produces.
In Ayurveda we stress the importance of taking in truly natural remedies to heal the body. Remedies such as food, herbs, and spices — all are grown outside, absorbing the intelligent rays of the sun and the moon, which we collectively call prana. It’s this vibration of prana that gets into these remedies which in turn impart an intelligent vibration and action in our cells, allowing the cells to perform all their hundreds of complex functions, and also giving the cells the capability of communicating with each other. Every action inside of your cells runs on vibration. Intelligent vibration, the healing vibration of nature.
This is why we try to avoid synthetic vitamins as much as we can. They too are lacking nature’s healing energy, so when we take them into our bodies, yes, we will get an effect, but over time we will start to see side effects develop as their unintelligent or dumb effects begin to surface.
Which is exactly what is wrong with these synthetic hormones, such as birth control pills. Not only are they not intelligent, but they also break a very important law of nature in that they stop the body’s natural processes. This also is a very bad idea. 
For example, they stop the inherent and necessary rhythms of a woman’s hormonal cycle, making her infertile by preventing the release of an egg during the monthly cycle. They do this by suppressing the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. FSH and LH stimulate ovulation, which is the release of a mature egg from the female ovary. A woman cannot get pregnant if she doesn’t ovulate because there is no egg to be fertilized. I cringe when I think about someone stopping this basic law of nature inherent in all women and the havoc it must be wreaking on the delicately balanced endocrine system. The pill also thickens the mucus of the cervix. This thicker cervical mucus blocks sperm so they can’t swim to an egg. Yet another cringe-worthy thought. 
I always tell my patients — don’t stop any of the body’s natural cycles so your body can run smoothly and intelligently, with all the hundreds of functions happily taking place within the trillions of cells in your body. It’s almost like you get a slap from Mother Nature when you break these basic laws of nature. This is because every cell is physically and energetically connected to each other. So a breakdown in communication in one area usually will initiate a cascade of events which will eventually affect the entire body. We can’t expect to harm one area and think things will be OK everywhere else.
This is especially true with synthetic hormone use. You don’t want to remove the elegant hormones your body produces and replace them with chemical toxins — if you do then you must accept the reality of what might happen inside. 
They have been known to cause life threatening blood clots, strokes, depression and suicidal thoughts; some women develop high blood pressure, some develop osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hardening of the arteries, heart disease, diabetes and insulin resistance, kidney disease and even dementia.
I make it a point to ask every new patient if they have ever taken birth control pills, or worse, the morning after pill which is even higher doses than the pill and wreaks even more havoc. And if they have taken the birth control pill I ask for how long and how many morning after pills were taken. That way, I know the amount of toxicity I’m dealing with.
Always keep this in mind: estrogen makes things grow. The intelligent estrogen your body produces made your hips and breasts grow at puberty, for example. The unintelligent or dumb estrogen found in HRT and birth control pills creates “dumb” growth — growths such as cancerous breast tumors.
Another pattern I have seen through the years is that the birth control pill destroys the friendly bacteria in the gut, just like antibiotics do. Once these are destroyed you can develop food allergies, yeast infections, irritable bowel and autoimmune diseases. It’s important to understand that the friendly bacteria in the gut prevent infection, they also help the digestion of food and they keep the immune system stable so it doesn’t spiral out of control and start reacting to foods or attacking your body which will wind up in an autoimmune disease as your immune system starts attacking you.
And birth control pills also wipe out the strains of the friendly bacteria in the bladder and vaginal tract, causing recurring bladder infections and/or bacterial vaginosis. These infections don’t occur out of the blue — they happen once the friendly bacteria are depleted. Since these beneficial bacteria prevent infections from growing once they are depleted you become prone to any one of these types of infections.
If you have been on the pill for any length of time you must regrow the friendly bacteria in the gut, the vaginal tract and the bladder using targeted types of probiotics for each specific area. You then have to undergo an intense regimen of cleansing. Cleansing the liver, the fat cells, the bone marrow, and the blood, all the places where these fatty hormones deposit and stay forever. 
Since these hormones are made out of cholesterol, there is a very good chance you need to thin out the bile in the gall bladder, as the gall bladder has to process these fatty hormones out and continually dumping this much fat and cholesterol into your bile can overwhelm it, causing a condition known as bile sludge. Normally the bile is thin and flows like a liquid. But when too much fat is introduced into it, it becomes thick, like a toothpaste. You need to thin out the bile using various herbs, foods and teas before it becomes too thick and begins congealing into gall stones. This is why so many women on the pill develop gall bladder disease. Nip it in the bud before it’s too late. Thin out the sludge before stones begin to form, and get off the pill as quickly as you can.
And finally, another pattern you’ll see develop is that many women who have been on the birth control pill will develop problems with their thyroid gland. This can happen for several reasons. First, the birth control pill depletes both selenium and zinc, two nutrients that your thyroid needs to both make the hormones and convert them to their active form. 
The pill also depletes the B vitamins. I remember very early on in my practice taking the pulse of women who were on the pill — I felt so sorry for them because I could feel their hand trembling and shaking as I took their pulse, a result of low B vitamins. And without B vitamins you cannot synthesize thyroid hormones. 
And another huge reason the birth control pill upsets the thyroid function is because it increases thyroid binding globulin or TBG. TBG, as it name implies, binds the thyroid hormone, making it unavailable to your cells, which isn’t a great thing since your thyroid hormones affect every single cell in your body. 
Here’s the way it works: you make the thyroid hormone, but it just circulates around in your body, kind of like it’s sitting in a taxicab just cruising around your body until it’s needed. The taxicab is the thyroid binding globulin. When the body sends signals that it needs more thyroid hormone, the thyroid hormone has to get out of the taxicab and go into the cells where it’s needed. This means it has to become unbound to the TBG so it is free to go into the cell. When there’s too much TBG it’s kind of like the thyroid hormone can’t get out of the cab, causing your body to suffer from lack of thyroid hormone.
Don’t pollute your body like this for just a few days out of the month that you are fertile. Use barrier methods of contraception such as condoms (both internal and external), diaphragms, cervical caps, and sponges. Or you can learn when you are ovulating and refrain from sexual activity a few days before and a few days after ovulation, since the sperm can live a few days.
Many women are put on the birth control pill not to prevent a pregnancy but to treat acne or irregular menstrual cycles. Let me warn you about this as well. The only reason the birth control pill helps acne is because it stops the natural detox process of the skin. This is also not a very good idea. Your skin is the largest organ in the body whose primary function is to let toxins out through the pores all day every day. If you block this very important detox process the toxins turn around and go deeper into the physiology, causing worse problems in the future.
And if your menstrual cycles are irregular, if you skip them or they come too frequently, then you should fix all the reasons that this is happening. Just taking the birth control pill gives you a false sense of security because now your period is coming on time every month. But the real truth is that none of the underlying causes for the irregular cycles were addressed. The only reason you appear to be having a regular cycle is because you get breakthrough bleeding every month when you stop the pill for that week. If you don’t address all the underlying reasons for the irregular cycles then these imbalances continue to fester within the body causing a bigger problem in the future, especially when you decide to start a family of your own.
So, I hope you will think twice before you decide to go on the birth control pill. Yes, it may be easy to just pop a pill each day to prevent a pregnancy, but the amount of toxicity it creates and the health problems associated with it aren’t worth it. And if you are using it to prevent acne or balance out your irregular cycle keep in mind that they are actually doing nothing to fix the underlying imbalances — all you’re doing is sweeping the problem under the rug, creating much bigger health problems in the not too distant future.
I hope this information keeps you away from the pill. I’ve seen way too many victims of the birth control pill through the years. Please. Your health is the most important thing in your life. Don’t throw it away so easily.

The Chinese call magnesium “The Beautiful Mineral.” It is also known as the “Lamp of Life.” And it’s been called the absolute most important nutrient in the world.

I read these words about 15 years ago when I was studying the health benefits of magnesium. At the same time, my teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, award-winning Ayurvedic herbal formulator and dermatologist was researching the use of magnesium as well. After I finished my research I thought I had better call him because I knew he was intent on formulating transdermal magnesium products. I had just finished reading how magnesium chloride was the best form of magnesium to use and I remember thinking I had better let him know this since he was a Vaidya who had just come from a small village in India, and I thought he might not be well versed enough in the latest modern research.
I remember calling him and asking him how he was coming along with his transdermal magnesium products. He said he was very happy with the creams, roll-ons and abhyanga oils he was developing. I asked him what type of magnesium he was using in all the products. And even without all the research I had access to, I was shocked when he replied, “Magnesium Chloride. That’s the best.” From that point on I never questioned any of his formulas! And he knew intuitively that the transdermal use of magnesium was the best delivery system. 
It turns out that the fats in the skin disperse it into the body and activate it along the way, allowing your magnesium deprived cells to bathe in its healing effects. Let’s see why every cell in your body is crying out for more magnesium and why we should learn to listen to these calls.
Let’s start with the fact that magnesium is bound to the center of the chlorophyll molecule. It’s because of magnesium that the plants can convert the sunlight into energy. Which means that all of life, including the food chain, is dependent on the sunlight-chlorophyll-magnesium chain. So we can consider it the source of life since all animals and humans eat plants for their food supply. All of life for billions of years has been dependent on the development of chlorophyll, a molecule that captures light energy from the sun and through a process called photosynthesis transforms it into small energy rich molecules easy for cells to use, which creates all the various life forms on Earth.
So magnesium is seen as the one nutrient which is needed by plants to form chlorophyll, which makes the plants green, but on a deeper level, without magnesium the plants would not be able to absorb nutrition from the sun because the process of photosynthesis would not go on. 
This is why when magnesium is depleted things begin to die: in fact you can’t take a breath, move a muscle, think a thought, or make energy without enough magnesium in your cells. In fact, 800 other functions wouldn’t occur either, since magnesium is a catalyst for all these important reactions throughout the body.
Let’s take a deeper look at what magnesium does for us.
First, it plays a huge role in helping newly formed DNA to repair itself. Toxins can cause oxidative damage to the DNA causing dangerous mutations to form. Magnesium initiates many of the mechanisms that need to occur to help correct any mistakes as the DNA is forming, which will help serious diseases, such as cancer, from developing.
Glutathione is considered the body’s master antioxidant which prevents generation of free radicals. In fact glutathione is one of the few antioxidant molecules which can neutralize mercury. But magnesium is required to make glutathione, so, if magnesium goes low, and I can emphatically tell you from experience it is low in just about everyone of us, then glutathione levels become severely depleted, which is not good because glutathione defends the body against damage from cigarette smoking, radiation, cancer-causing chemicals, alcohol, and just about any other toxin you can think of.
The vast majority of the new patients complain of low energy. There are several reasons for this, and we always make sure to address all those reasons, but keep in mind that the body makes energy by producing ATP. ATP is made in the mitochondria — and it’s made in each of the 100 trillion cells of our body. ATP is the main source of energy in our cells and inside each cell are mitochondria making the energy for all of our cells’ functions. But ATP must be bound to magnesium in order for it to work. ATP is formed from our food through a series of chemical reactions called the Kreb’s cycle and 7 of the 10 enzymes in this cycle are dependent on magnesium. 
And here’s the important thing: Magnesium sits on the outside of every cell in your body always keeping the calcium out. So if magnesium becomes too low calcium can take advantage and quickly infiltrate into the mitochondria, causing it to calcify. This would create lots of health problems since the heart muscles have a never ending need for energy since they are always contracting without a rest. And the mitochondria are highly concentrated in the brain and the central nervous system which is why calcification of the mitochondria is implicated in Parkinson’s, MS and other brain diseases. 
And since the power plant of the cells is in the mitochondria where all the ATP is made, if the mitochondria become low in magnesium and the calcium gains access inside, this calcification of the mitochondria can mark the beginning of the aging process. In fact every function can slow down when the mitochondria calcify. This is why our biochemical age is determined by the ratio of calcium to magnesium both inside and outside of our cells.
The ancient doctors of India said there are two types of hormone problems: either not enough of the hormone is being made, or sufficient quantities of hormones are being made but they’re not getting transported to the areas where they exert their influence.
Magnesium has effects on both of these two aspects concerning the hormones: it is used to both make the hormones and it is also a co-factor involved in transporting hormones into the cells because the hormones can’t pass into the inside of the cell by themselves. So magnesium carries them across the cell wall and delivers them into the inside of the cells. We can make these hormones but if they just sit outside the cell they can’t carry out their intended functions.
In fact, magnesium also allows insulin to transfer glucose (sugar) into the cells. If magnesium goes low the glucose and insulin can build up and the blood sugar can go high.
Many of our patients get tremendous relief from their headaches because magnesium promotes relaxation in the head and neck muscles and prevents spasms in the walls of the arteries, taking away intense headache and migraine pain.
Magnesium is famous for lowering blood pressure. This is because it relaxes the muscles in the walls of the arteries, allowing the artery to open up causing the blood pressure to go down. When we’re stressed the magnesium flushes out of the body which can cause the arteries to contract down causing the blood pressure to go up. Once magnesium levels come back up the muscles in the walls of the arteries relax and the blood pressure goes down as the artery dilates open again.
Magnesium is also an amazing antidote for hardening of the arteries. Any calcium we take into out bodies should only go into our bones and teeth, and that’s it. But calcium always wants to take advantage whenever magnesium goes low, rushing into the inside of the cells, creating lots of problems. For example, if it makes its way into the inside of your arteries it will cause hardening of the arteries.
Normally, when the heart beats the arteries give a little, due to the elastic found in one of the layers of the arteries. It’s just like a rubber band. This dilation of the arteries keeps the blood pressure low when the heart beats. But over a lifetime if calcium has been allowed to infiltrate into the elastic layer it will make the arteries stiff and hard causing the blood pressure to go up when the heart beats. 
The good news is I’ve been able to reverse hardening of the arteries in so many of our elderly patients. If you take the pulse of someone in their 20’s you can feel a lot of elasticity in the arteries, they are very pliable and soft. But as the patient ages, by the time they are in their 50’s or above, the arteries feel very hard due to the calcium which has infiltrated over the years.
Always remember this image: if you put a calcium tablet in a glass of water, it just sits there. But once you put some magnesium in it will break it down and disintegrate it. The same thing happens to the calcium lining our arteries: magnesium can displace the calcium once it enters into your body. So this means that if you are very diligent in using your transdermal magnesium products, the arteries will become soft and pliable again as the magnesium forces out the hard calcium, and the pulse will feel much younger, like when you were in your 20’s! And the blood pressure will go down again.
And think of this: nearly everyone develops cataracts as they age. What are cataracts? Well, they are the infiltration of calcium into the lens. Again! Calcium is trying to get into places we don’t want it. And once calcium enters the lens it becomes very difficult to see. So start out using magnesium to prevent or delay the onset of cataracts.
Now, as far as osteoporosis is concerned, many people automatically think of supplementing with calcium when they hear their bones are depleted. Calcium makes the bones hard and brittle, like a piece of chalk which breaks if you drop it. But magnesium keeps the bones pliable, kind of like a chicken bone — if you try to break it it bends due to the elasticity from the magnesium contained in it. So don’t forget to keep up with your magnesium therapies if you get a diagnosis of either osteopenia or osteoporosis.
And as far as Ayurveda is concerned, magnesium is known as a tridoshic therapy. This means that it is balancing to all 3 body types: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It calms the nervousness of Vata, cools down the heat of pitta and gives energy to the laid-back kaphas who tend to get a little lazy.
And not only that, it has the unique property of being both nourishing and detoxifying at the same time. This is an unusual quality to have because some remedies are either detoxifying, which break down the body as they cleanse the tissues, while others build up the body due to their nurturing capabilities. But magnesium does both. These rare types of remedies which have both effects of nourishing and detoxifying are highly prized in Ayurveda.
We like to apply it directly on the skin where it brings new life into the cells. The fat cells in the skin take up the magnesium and absorb and activate it much better than if it is taken orally where it sometimes travels too quickly through the digestive tract, creating loose bowel movements or diarrhea. 
We use magnesium chloride in all of our transdermal products: abhyanga oils which are used for daily oil massages, concentrated roll-ons and creams to be applied to the specific areas where the magnesium is needed most, such as the lower spine and lower abdomen to prevent painful menstrual cramps, on the lower legs to prevent restless legs and muscle spasms, on the entire back to prevent irregular heartbeats or to lower the blood pressure; down the spine, on the wrists and the soles of the feet and under the skull in the back (in the sub-occipital region) for panic attacks and headaches, nervousness and anxiety. We even use magnesium chloride baths to treat severe body aches and pains, and to calm the nerves and lower the blood pressure.
Epsom salts contain magnesium sulfate, but the sulfate form doesn’t have long-lasting effects like the magnesium chloride does. Plus the body has to convert the sulfate into the chloride form so you might as well use the magnesium chloride in the first place. And magnesium chloride has a stronger effect on drawing out toxins through the pores of the skin than other types of magnesium.
Just about everyone needs magnesium: the cortisol we produce when we’re stressed flushes magnesium out of the body; nearly every pharmaceutical also flushes out magnesium; the soil nowadays is depleted in magnesium. Alcohol, coffee, and the phosphorus in sodas also deplete it. And for every molecule of sugar you eat it takes 18 molecules of magnesium to break it down. 
Transdermal use of magnesium is the safest way to take it: the skin absorbs exactly what it needs without you having to worry if you’re overdosing or under-dosing.

Acne is a condition where the pores in the skin get blocked by excessive oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, which can result in infection and inflammation. 
Each pore of your skin opens up to a follicle. The follicle is made up of a hair and an oil gland called a sebaceous gland. The oil gland releases sebum (oil), which travels up the hair, out of the pore and onto the skin. The sebum keeps your skin lubricated and soft. 
Acne can occur if either too much oil is produced by your follicles, or if dead skin cells accumulate in your pores causing bacteria to build up in the pores. A pimple appears when bacteria grows in a clogged pore and the oil is not able to escape. 
Hormonal changes can contribute to acne. So can certain medications like birth control pills or steroids, a diet high in refined sugars and deep fried foods and chips, and having parents who had acne can also predispose you to the condition.
When I was a young student studying holistic medicine, many years before I opened my Ayurvedic and nutritional practice, I was told that across the board and without a doubt my sickest patients would be those who were on antibiotics for years to treat their acne. 
I remember shuddering at the thought, and then I got to see firsthand all the victims of this type of treatment — how the months and years on antibiotics destroyed the foundation of their immune system — the friendly bacteria in the gut — and all the ramifications that resulted from this huge insult to the body: inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, food allergies, fibromyalgia and other autoimmune diseases. All this happened as the immune system totally lost its intelligence, spiraled out of control and started to attack everything in sight — pollen, allergens, foods and ultimately one’s own body.
And there are other medications for acne which can not only trigger autoimmune diseases, but can cause serious health issues in both the mother and her offspring, even if she hasn’t taken the medicine for several years. With our very accurate pulse diagnosis we can feel the toxins from this drug in both the mother and the child’s bone marrow, which has far-reaching side effects if you don’t know how to pull it out, which thankfully we do.
As I learned Ayurveda I was always eager to discover other ways to treat acne without scarring a person for life. So through the years I have both studied the research on acne and have treated numerous cases. I was very fortunate that my teacher, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, hailed from a family of Raj Vaidyas who treated the royalty of India and always specialized in dermatology. He himself was a dermatologist and in fact taught some of my patients who were dermatologists.
Vaidya Mishra got all the herbs from India for our patients and made specific formulas in the treatment of acne. For example, he was able to make several formulations out of a very specific herb used for acne, known as semal. He made a formula to be taken both internally as well as a clay mixed with semal and other herbs to be applied directly to the acne. This clay pulls the toxins out of the pores which is then washed off with turmeric soap. Turmeric soap can kill the infection in the whiteheads, blackheads and cysts. Next semal lotion is applied which is then left on the affected areas. All 3 of these treatments are to be done once a day. 
We also give Ayurvedically prepared zinc, known as a zinc bhasma, for easier absorption into the bloodstream. The regular zinc molecule is very large and has difficulty crossing across very delicate cell walls, but by incinerating the zinc mineral repeatedly the molecule eventually becomes a very small nanoparticle capable of easily entering the cell. 
Zinc has always been used in the treatment of acne and other skin conditions because its anti-inflammatory properties help the body to reduce the redness and swelling seen in acne patients. Studies show that patients who were treated with zinc experienced a decrease in active breakouts compared to those who weren’t treated with it. Zinc also helps in wound healing so it can help reduce any residual acne scarring and the most important thing of all is that studies have shown that zinc can kill the bacteria that invade the pores which cause the acne in the first place.
We clean and cool the blood with coriander tea, which directs the toxins away from the skin and into the urine, allowing for beautiful clear healthy-looking skin. Since acne is caused from oil clogging the pores we also need to clean the fat tissue since it gets clogged from eating the hard oxidized fats found in vegetable oils and fast foods. The sweat is the mala or the detox product of the fat tissue therefore we have to clean both the sweat and the toxic fat tissue with Indian Sarsparilla root. Toxins in the blood heat it up, causing all the inflammation we see with acne, so we add organic dried rose petals in the coriander tea to cool down the heat in the blood. We also add manjistha which helps with the inflammation at the site of the pustules and pimples because it stops the reactivity of the hot toxins exiting through the pores of the skin and as an added bonus it purifies both the blood and the liver.
We use extra potent Manuka honey directly on the acne to kill infection. Manuka honey is produced from the nectar of the Manuka tree found in New Zealand. Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties set it apart from other types of honey. It contains methylglyoxal as its active ingredient which is what is responsible for its antibacterial effects. It is also anti-inflammatory, which is perfect in the treatment of acne since acne consists of both a bacterial infection from the clogged pores as well as inflammation surrounding the pustule. We use it directly on the skin for about 20 minutes a day before rinsing it off.

We also cool the excess heat in the liver with bhumi amla, and heal liver cells which get damaged from cheap vegetable oils using mankand. Mankand is an extremely rare Ayurvedic herb and we are very lucky to be able to include it in our arsenal of herbs to heal the liver. 
It is also important to both clean the liver and at the same time keep it cool by using guduchi satwa, and we use neem tea when the patients can tolerate it. Neem is great for infections in the skin and for cleaning the blood and liver, all of which are indicated in the treatment of acne. It has somewhat of a hot potency so we have to be careful when we use it.
But I’m getting way ahead of myself because first and foremost, what always needs to be done, before any prescription is written, is to identify the root causes, treat that, and THEN treat the most superficial symptom, which of course, is the acne.
If you just focus on treating the skin you won’t get very far because this is more of a problem with toxins and heat in the blood plasma, the blood and the liver.
So let’s start at the very beginning: Behind the scenes governing all of our bodies’ processes are three organizing principles of our physiology known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These elements come from nature outside of our body and are known as Prana. Prana is the cosmic radiation coming from the sunlight and moonlight creating Agni (hot energy from the sun) and Soma (cooling lunar radiation) which form Pitta and Kapha in our bodies. Marut is responsible for the movement of the soma and agni and inside of our bodies is known as Vata.
Vata, Pitta and Kapha govern all the various functions of our entire physiology. Vata is dry, quick, moving, rough and cold and governs movements of things in our body, such as the movement of the blood through the circulatory tract. Pitta, the fire element gives heat to all the digestive organs since they have to cook the food when it comes in. And Kapha is heavy, unctuous and cold and is responsible for lubricating our joints and brain, among other things.
We have 3 phases of life: we start out with the Kapha Stage when children are growing and there is much lubrication going on inside their bodies as their joints and brain are developing. The Pitta stage occurs in the teens and twenties as heat automatically increases in the blood, liver and skin during these years and hormones come into play. And the Vata stage of life occurs past the age of 40-50 when drying up of the physiology can occur since Vata is a very dry dosha.
As you can see then, acne usually develops during the Pitta stage of life, and if you don’t know how to manage the heat that occurs during these years as well as the fluctuations in hormones it can create skin breakouts as the skin is considered a pitta organ.
So, what kinds of things can aggravate this heat, or Pitta? Well, first would be going to bed past 10:00 PM since 10 at night to 2 in the morning is when pitta is most active in the physiology. We don’t want to be awake during this time or else pitta will become aggravated in the body. Notice here how teens automatically want to start staying up late.
Also, too much screen time on cell phones, computers and video games is problematic because the radiation coming from these devices also creates agneya or heat in the physiology. Notice again how teens tend to get addicted to these creating further heat in their bodies.
Skipping and delaying meals, running out of the house without eating breakfast can upset pitta as the liver has 5 digestive fires and is a very large organ looking for food to digest. When it is time to eat and there is no food there the liver can overheat and this heat can spill out into the whole body because the liver makes blood from the food you eat.
Junk food also makes the liver very hot and angry, resulting in bad skin. In fact, many people in the Ayurvedic community feel that the skin is showing you the condition of the blood and the liver, so if the diet is clean the skin will reflect that.
And finally, children are exposed to an unprecedented amount of pharmaceuticals between their immunizations, antibiotics, steroids, inhalers and other medications, all of which can heat up the liver. Once the liver is hot, the blood becomes hot, agitating the toxins coming through the skin from the blood, allowing them to create much more inflammation than if they weren’t so heated up.
So the first step in treating acne then is to go to bed on time, avoid screen time as much as you can, never skip or delay meals, eat healthy with less processed, deep fried and fast foods, and try to prevent exposure to as many pharmaceuticals as you can.
Now, as far as the herbs go: we have several treatments for acne, but as stated before, the exact protocol for each patient depends on the underlying causes.
So for example, some of the root causes, besides those just mentioned, could be from high testosterone, which can come from insulin resistance, high estrogen/low progesterone, adrenal overload, leptin resistance, and polycystic ovary disease (PCOS). 
After evaluating each patient to figure out which of these causes could be contributing to their acne, we then have to prescribe a treatment protocol to address the various issues in that particular patient. 
Luckily we have a whole arsenal of over 500 herbal formulations to address each and every one of these issues.
So let’s start out by taking a look at how we treat the possible causes of high testosterone, since it is known to create acne in women if the levels are too elevated.
The first problem which ties in with high testosterone is insulin resistance where the body isn’t sensitive to the effects of the insulin that it is making. We have numerous herbs in Ayurveda to overcome this problem, always of course combined with dietary changes. For example, cinnamon sticks can be used in combination with other herbs or used in a tea. Don’t use the ground up cinnamon because it loses some of its medicinal properties once it’s ground and the active ingredients start to break down. Cinnamon makes you 25% more sensitive to the insulin your body produces.
High estrogen/low progesterone can also contribute to high testosterone. in my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda I described the domino effect which occurs from thyroid weakness. I explained that when the thyroid is weak the gall bladder automatically doesn’t empty the bile well, and it is through the bile that estrogen exits the body. So when the bile flow is sluggish you wind up with a situation called high estrogen, low progesterone as the estrogen which is sitting in the stagnant bile reabsorbs back into the bloodstream. And of course, we have all the specific herbs to deal with this situation as well.
Excess output of cortisol from the adrenal glands is another trigger for high testosterone. Whenever we’re stressed the adrenals dump cortisol and other stress hormones which shut down thyroid function and create both high testosterone and high estrogen/low progesterone. So with longterm stress you can develop acne as these hormones go out of balance. There are many ways to take the stress off the adrenals, with both herbs and changes in daily routine, early bedtime and proper rest.. 
Leptin resistance also creates high testosterone resulting in acne. Leptin resistance occurs when the body doesn’t respond to leptin, a hormone produced by your body’s fat cells which is responsible for telling the brain when you have enough fat stored so that you get the signal to stop eating and can burn calories at a normal rate. This system evolved to keep humans from overeating. So when you eat your body fat goes up causing the leptin levels to go up which in turn causes you to eat less and burn more energy. 
So many obese people have high levels of leptin which should be giving them the signal to eat less. But with leptin resistance the brain doesn’t receive the leptin signal and thinks that your body is starving making you hungry so you can eat more and desire less exercise. 
This situation most often comes from obesity where you get trapped in a vicious cycle of gaining weight and becoming increasingly more leptin resistant over time.
The antidote to this problem is to eat a healthy diet, exercise more and go to bed on time and have a good quality sleep. And these are all the things we recommend to all of our patients anyway, whether obese or not. It’s just that as you incorporate these healthy habits into your lifestyle the leptin resistance will fade away.
Polycystic ovary disease is becoming extremely common nowadays and is caused by a weak thyroid which causes high estrogen/low progesterone which may cause growths on the ovaries. Women may also experience insulin resistance as a result. This is why they too develop acne as these hormones spiral out of balance. So, to conclude, once we identify all the various reasons for the acne, we show the patient how to overcome their issues by taking their herbs, both internally and on the skin directly, and eating freshly made homemade food so they can have quality control over everything they eat. Always remember, as you clean up your diet your skin will reflect that, and the blemishes will clear up automatically.
And of course we teach our patients a good daily routine: how to be in tune with nature’s rhythms, which means going to bed no later than 10 PM, waking up before or as the sun comes up, exercising in the morning, and learning the various ways to cleanse the liver and blood, which again, will be reflected in the skin.
Always remember to try to treat the body in natural ways. Save the pharmaceuticals for life or death situations or for a crisis, as they are riddled with too many side effects. This is especially true for acne. Not only is it not a life-threatening disease, but it responds extremely well to natural remedies for balancing the hormones, cleaning the blood, liver and skin and to changes in diet and daily routine. There’s no need to risk your life to clear up your acne when you have time-proven treatments from the world-renowned dermatologists of the Ayurvedic tradition.

Why does Ayurveda recommend seasonal detox in the Spring and Autumn? The sun is our source of light, transformative energy, and heat, When the sun “rises” in the morning, it activates all life. Throughout the year, the changing intensity and concentration of its rays give rise to the seasons of Spring and Summer, Autumn and Winter. In the Winter, the days are short as the sun is low in the sky. The Winter solstice – December 21 – is the shortest day of the year. During the short Winter days the sun does not rise exactly in the east, but instead rises just south of east and it sets south of west. The sun is at its lowest path in the sky on the Winter Solstice. Each day after the Winter solstice, the sun’s path becomes a little higher in the southern sky. The Sun also begins to rise closer to the east and set closer to the west until we reach the day when it rises exactly east and sets exactly west. This day is called the equinox. In the spring we have the Spring Equinox about March 21st. On the equinox, the sun will rise in the east - not just somewhere in the east but exactly due east. This only happens on the Spring and Fall equinox. The rest of the year the sun will rise south or north of east.
As the Sun is higher and stays longer in the sky during summer, the sunlight reaching the surface is more concentrated. In Winter, the Sun is lower in the sky, and sunlight is spread out over a larger area. During Spring and Autumn, both hemispheres receive about the same amount of sunlight. This has significant impact on our bodily functions, the body is in transformative mode, rather than absorbing and holding. For detox, you need the body to perform optimally by transforming and releasing. 
On the Spring Equinox the Sun rises exactly in the east travels through the sky for 12 hours and sets exactly in the west. On the Equinox this is the motion of the sun through the sky for everyone on earth. Every place on earth experiences a 12 hours day twice a year on the Spring and Fall Equinox. This is ideal for the physiology. 
With the Spring Equinox, as the sun assumes its journey back to the northern hemisphere, it warms up the earth awakening her of her deep slumber, and a joyful celebration of life unfolds in a thousand colors, scents, and chirps!… Life comes back as Mother Earth is released from the cold and everything starts to flow and blossom again… Spring is here… In India this ecstatic outburst of life is celebrated as Holi…. A colorful festival where participants engage in coloring each other with clay powders on the streets, drinking sweet delicious celebratory drinks…. This is also when Persephone returned from Hades triggering great ritual celebrations in Ancient Greece… In Ayurveda, this is the right time to set intentions and shift gears. Make Your Own!

Modern medicine has recently confirmed the benefits of a healthy gut microbiome through the use probiotics and yogurt cultures. Now more than ever, we need to address the health of our gut because so much of what we eat and consume, including pharmaceuticals – can destroy a large part of our beneficial bacteria in the gut. Medicines such as: antibiotics; birth control pills; immunizations; steroids; acid reflux medicines; even over the counter “pain-killers.” Thus it becomes critical that we learn how to replenish the healthy bacteria, specially because they can help prevent irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies and even autoimmune diseases. While this is a relatively new field of study that is evolving, did you know that the ancient healers of Vedic India already offered in-depth understanding and great remedies for the health of the friendly bacteria in our gut?
The sourcebook of Ayurveda, the Charak Samhita, famous for detailing ayurvedic internal medicine, discusses the relationship between bacteria and sunlight – modern science h as now confirmed that UV light inhibits the growth of bad bacteria. But even beyond that, the Atharva Veda contains discusses both friendly and unfriendly micro-organisms, and offers many remedies. We categorize these micro-organisms as visible and invisible. In general, the term “krimi” is used to refer to bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, helminthes, and algae. The friendly bacteria are also categorized roughly under this same category. But Vaidya Rampant Mishra, my ayurvedic mentor and colleague from the Shaka Vansya lineage of Ayurveda (SVA), used the term “yogini-s” coined by his father, Kameshwar Mishra, when referring to the friendly bacteria. Why? Because these friendly are responsible for processing and making available the prana or life energy from the food we eat. They act as the bridge between the external world represented by food and our internal body ecosystem. They conjugate the food into energy and prana (life force) in our bodies.
“Yogini-s” – as Vaidya Mishra called them, connect our inner body with the universal body and act like little goddesses that give and support life from both a mental and physical perspective. Vaidya also used to teach that “the brain of the brain lies in the gut.” Strange as this statement might have seemed 25 years ago, we now know it is well documented how the friendly bacteria in the gut make 90% of the neurotransmitters in the brain, which dictates our mental state. In addition, they are also responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream, keeping our physical bodies strong into old age. They also stabilize the immune system preventing it from attacking food or worse, your own body, which could result in both food allergies and autoimmune diseases. It’s no wonder they were considered little goddesses which protect our physical and mental health!

Making your own home-made yogurt is one of the best ways to nourish your body with these little yoginies; however, since yoghurt is a “cold and heavy” food in ayurveda, or more speficially known to be “abhishandi” – it can form ama, or partially digested food, which is clogging to the body’s physical and vibrational channels. We have to be careful as then when and how we consume it. 
This also applies to all dairy products obtained from the cow: milk, cream, yoghurt. This is why we always want to boil dairy or add hot pungent spices to counterbalance its cold, clogging nature. In these instances we are adding agni – or fire – to burn the heaviness of the soma contained in these dairy products, rendering them less capable of forming ama, as Vaidya Mishra explained.
But you should never boil yogurt! Otherwise it will turn sour and become pitta aggravating as well as kill the friendly bacteria contained within it. This is why we find many recipes and methods of using yoghurt: to counteract its clogging effect and mucus forming propensity and yet retain its live bacterial cultures that are so necessary for out health. 
So let’s start at the very beginning. First, it’s best to start out with a good yogurt starter culture. We recommend the Natren Yogurt Starter from a company known as Natren. Natasha Natren is the creator of the brand, and she brought the friendly micro-organisms with her from Russia to America! The strains contained in their powders and capsules are not only unique but they are still alive yet dormant. They get activated with the proper temperature in the proper medium. Don’t forget, these strains of bacteria are very delicate and can die during the processing of both the probiotics and yogurt strains, which happens all too often with most of the probiotic companies on the market.
Vaidya Mishra and I tried several yogurt starters and several yogurts available on the supermarket shelves, and none had the alkalinity he was looking for. The ancient texts or shastras remind us that yogurt should not taste (too) sour, because the friendly bacteria do not thrive in the acidic medium. This is another reason why sour yoghurt can be pitta aggravating. This is why non-sour (alkaline) yogurt is easier on the colon – unlike kefir which carries high yeast and may overwhelm both the immune system and the colon. If an individual has a sensitive immune system they may experience complications or additional symptoms when ingesting kefir. In addition, did you know that unlike kefir, yogurt is not contraindicated for pregnant women? It is great for them to have. According to the ayurvedic shastras, a yogurt starter is better for you than kefir as it has a more satvic nature. Satvic foods are those that are fresh, pure, nutritious and balanced in alkalinity, giving physical strength and mental clarity.
The Natren bottle of the yogurt starter has an expiration date, which is usually around a year, so it can be kept in your refrigerator to keep the cultures live – but if you make yoghurt regularly it won’t last you that long anyways! 

If You’ve Never Made Yoghurt Before
Not to worry, the instructions are on the table of the jar. Basically, you heat 6-8 cups of whole non-homogenized ideally raw milk over a low flame to at least 180 degrees F (82 degrees C) — do not boil. Maintain this temperature for at least 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the milk to cool to 108-112 degrees F (42-44 degrees C). Then place 1-2 level teaspoons of Yogurt Starter into 2 tablespoons of the cooled down milk and whisk gently to make a smooth paste. Continue to add more milk a small amount at a time, blending thoroughly after each addition until all the milk is used. You can then pour it into a yogurt maker or put it in a large bowl covered with a towel in an oven that’s kept warm with a pilot light. Leave it overnight and wake up the next morning to your first batch of beautiful home-made healthy and delicious yogurt.
It might take a few tries, but you want to aim towards getting a yogurt that isn’t too sour. The longer it stays in the yogurt maker or oven the more sour it will become, so it is best to keep it in for no longer than 6-8 hours or so. 
For your next and future batches of yogurt use one cup of yogurt from the previous batch to whisk into the cooled down boiled milk. And you can continue to do this for two months. Each time you make a new batch there will be a little less live bacteria in the new batch, so it is good to start over with the yogurt starter powder every two months to guarantee ample amount of beneficial cultures.
Once you have made your yogurt you’ll be so excited to try it and receive its numerous health benefits – besides the fact that it taste incredibly good! Now you should know that we also do not know how to consume yogurt properly here in the West. We should NEVER have yoghurt with fruit! And never have yogurt for breakfast in the morning. These practices aggravate the heavy and cold property of yogurt and can give us serious chronic congestion and other digestive issues. But Vaidya Mishra taught us that there are several things you can do to counter the channel clogging properties of yogurt. 
First, best way to consume yogurt daily is to make make a medicinal lassi blending one-fourth cup of plain yogurt with three-fourths cup of room temperature spring water with a pinch of ground cumin and three sprigs of cilantro leaves. Blend for a minute, skim off the fat that rises to the top and discard it, then repeat this process again. Add salt to taste. Take sips of this lassi in between bites of food at lunchtime only, when the digestive fire is strongest.
Or you could try wrapping the yogurt in cheesecloth and letting it drip into a bowl overnight in the refrigerator. You can drink the yellowish liquid from the dripping again at lunchtime in between bites of food. The solid yoghurt is home-made pure delicious cream cheese. It’s a little lighter even if still clogging, because it has lost some of its water content. You can add dry mint leaves, some olive oil, and some salt and make herbed cream cheese! 
Or you could also try stirring the yogurt into you dahl or vegetables. But the best recipe ever yet is the one Vaidya Mishra gave us: eat the yogurt with a little bit of raw honey and couple pinches of nutmeg. Both the honey and nutmeg counteract the cold and clogging properties of the yogurt, decreasing its mucus forming quality. In fact, you can even try to boil the milk with a cinnamon stick or a few thin slices of fresh ginger in the very first step of making the yogurt, strain them out and then whisk in the yogurt culture once the milk has cooled down to the correct temperature. Both these spices add some heat to the otherwise cold clogging yogurt as well.
If you are very sensitive to the mucus-forming quality of yogurt, always consume it with some black pepper, or a green chili, and some Mom’s Masala. Otherwise, you can consider consuming it only in the summertime, when the sun is closest to the earth warming up your digestive system and countering its clogging mucus forming effect.
Dairy vs Coconut Yogurt?
Now, many of you are allergic to dairy products and are consuming coconut yogurt made with coconut milk. The problem here is that coconut is a rich heavy fruit which also needs a strong metabolic fire to digest it. So, if you make yogurt out of it it becomes even heavier and colder than dairy yogurt, and harder for most people to be able to consume without making some ama out of it. Using the coconut water obtained from a fresh mature coconut is OK in warm weather. You’ll get the health benefits of the coconut without the clogging properties of the coconut milk. But coconut yogurt has different properties. And this is another thing that the Ayurveda teaches us: different manners of consuming a fruit or edible item in different preparations gives different results. It’s something we have yet to discover in western nutritional science…. For example, like I stated above, there is a big difference between consuming cold vs boiled warm milk in terms of the health benefits for the body. 
How to Make Coconut Yoghurt 
Here’s how you get the coconut water out of the coconut — press into one of the three eyes at the top of the coconut. One will be soft so pierce it with a screw driver, turn it over and strain into a glass. Warm up this coconut water to about 98 degrees, which only takes a few seconds in a pan over the cooktop. Keep a thermometer in the coconut water so it doesn’t overheat because too much heat will destroy the friendly bacteria. Whisk in a teaspoon of the yogurt starter and keep it in the yogurt maker or warm oven for about 6 hours or overnight. Refrigerate it in the morning and each day take 1-2 Tbs every day on an empty stomach. This yoghurt does not have a creamy texture like dairy yoghurt. It will be more of a liquid texture. The point of making yogurt is that it carries friendly bacteria and is lively. So don’t worry if your coconut yogurt does not look creamy like store bought coconut yogurt.

Yogurt does not mix well with fish or spinach. Nor does it mix well with other fresh fruit.
You might ask why not fruit, since many of the yogurt companies have it mixed already with fruit and so many people do combine it with fresh fruit on their own. Both yogurt and fruit are considered somagenic, which means they both contain a high amount of cold heavy ingredients that require a fit digestive fire. In modern terms this translates into sugar content, water content, and other ingredients. Since soma is so cooling it takes a strong digestive fire to break it down and if it isn’t digested properly you can make ama, or partially digested channel clogging residue from this cold food. You will end up with body aches, fatigue, sluggish digestion, congestion and/or cold-like symptoms, and eventually may experience chronic achy muscles and other similar symptoms. 
Always remember ama in Ayurveda is considered the root cause of ALL diseases and if you make ama after a meal you will feel heavy and sluggish. And as it clogs your channels you might feel stiffness and inflammation in the joints and muscles.
While some people might be able to seemingly digest fruit and yogurt together, most people don’t have enough metabolic capacity to properly digest it.
I remember Vaidya Mishra literally cringing when I told him people in America eat bananas with yogurt, both of which are heavy and channel-clogging.
But other than these few little complications, freshly made homemade yogurt is extremely beneficial to your health and is quite tasty — and I’m sure you will reap great benefits as you continue to regrow the friendly bacteria in the gut that became depleted over the course of a lifetime. It’s always so exciting to put your yogurt cultures in your oven or yogurt maker at night and wake up to a beautiful freshly made delicious food hailed as one of nature’s greatest gifts to our health.

Are you slowly but surely poisoning yourself daily through your oral care products? If you mouth-wash or toothpaste carries a disclaimer or a warning sign that says ‘DO NOT SWALLOW’ or provides an emergency number in case of accidental ingestion then it’s best you discontinue their use. Vaidya Mishra explained that “the ancient Indian seers of Ayurveda knew that the oral mucosa – the mucous membrane lining or “skin” inside of the mouth, including cheeks and lips – absorbs anything it comes in contact with. Whether it’s toxic or medicinal. What’s more, these ingredients get delivered immediately to all organs and organ systems in our body immediately. This is why, in ancient India, we never used anything that could be remotely toxic.”
Live plants and herbs and fresh powders were used. For example: chewing the fresh twigs of herbal plants such as Neem (Azadirachta indica), or Kahdir (Acacia nilotica), or Karanj (Pongamia glabra) to brush the teeth – these were the toothbrushes made by Mother Nature! Home-made herbal tooth powder was also made with these and other plants for brushing. Tongue-scraping or cleaning was a daily hygienic habit – using plant stems. Also using a tongue scraper made from copper or even better, silver. Flossing was done with Neem leaf stem. What about toothaches? They were treated with clove or clove leaf oil, and mixtures of herbal oils prepared with spices were used to gargle morning and evening. For gum infection or gingivitis , infusion of neem leaf, gymenma leaf, licorice root, and clove leaf were prepared. Science now also confirms the properties of all these ingredients. But what we tend to forget, adds Vaidya Mishra, is that not only did neem, Karanj, Babool, Shaal, and Sakhua have tremendous dental health benefits, but they also supported the health of the entire body.
Vaidya Mishra added: “I watched my father, Vaidya Kameshwar Mishra help patients with chronic liver problem by recommending they brush their teeth with a fresh stick of Guduchi stem every morning.”
Is this why Vaidya Mishra made his oral care products?

Fatty Liver

There are two main forms of fatty liver disease:
Alcoholic Liver Disease: 
This results from heavy drinking and causes accumulation of fat in the liver. Moderate drinking is defined as one drink a day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. About 5% of people in the U.S. have this form of liver disease.
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: 
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs in people who aren’t heavy drinkers or who may not even drink at all. This condition affects 1 in 3 adults and 1 in 10 children in the U.S. So many of the patients I see have this form of fatty liver — and many of them are vegetarian, eat freshly made homemade food at home, and never drink alcohol or eat junk food. So how could this be? Something is obviously scarring their liver.
High levels of liver enzymes which turn up on blood work are a sign your liver is injured. To definitively diagnosis fatty liver disease your doctor might order an ultrasound or a CT scan of the liver or a liver biopsy to determine how far the liver disease has progressed.
In most cases fatty liver disease doesn’t cause any serious problems or prevent your liver from functioning properly, but 7 to 30% of people with fatty liver disease get worse over time. 
It can progress through 3 stages:
In the first stage the liver becomes inflamed and swollen which damages its tissue;
in the second stage scar tissue forms where your liver is damaged – this process is called fibrosis. By the third stage, extensive scar tissue replaces the healthy tissue causing cirrhosis of the liver. This hard scar tissue that replaces healthy liver tissue slows down the liver’s functioning and can eventually block the liver functions entirely. Cirrhosis can lead to liver failure and liver cancer.
Obesity, metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes increase the risk of developing NAFLD, but by far, the most common cause is the the consumption of vegetable oils containing omega-6 fatty acids. This is what I see everyday in my busy Ayurvedic practice. 
Early on I used to wonder how this could be: I had hundreds of patients present with fatty liver, yet when I asked them if they had ever drank alcohol the reply was “no, never.” Then when I asked them what they ate, it was usually a very healthy diet, cooking homemade food from scratch every day, with no processed foods. I remember in those early years trying to figure out what was torturing their liver. Many of the Americans were taking lots of synthetic nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and processed foods, so I attributed their fatty liver to years of neglect, as the liver had to process all these harsh foods and chemicals. But the people I saw from India weren’t taking vitamins, and never took the high doses of birth control pills, antibiotics and other medications the Americans take which over time disrupt their liver function. It was an enigma. I used to lie in bed at night wondering how hundreds and thousands of my Indian patients had fatty liver when there was no obvious reason for their liver damage.

Then it finally occurred to me! I realized I had never asked them what type of cooking oils they were using. When I did, it became obvious how the damage had occurred. They were all using processed vegetable oils. They all reported to me that they consumed mustard oil, ground nut oil (peanut oil), Canola and other vegetable oil blends on a regular basis. It turns out that when you heat these oils compounds are formed which cause severe liver damage in a very short period of time, even by the time the person is a teenager. Let’s take a look more deeply at this very important issue, because this very same thing is happening to people all around the world, and it causes not only a fatty liver, but also plaque buildup in the arteries as these oils also form a plastic which clogs the arteries once they are heated. 
The term vegetable oil is used to refer to any oil that comes from plant sources. Vegetable oils include, but are not limited to the following: corn, soybean, Canola, sunflower, peanut, cottonseed, palm, mustard, and safflower oils. These oils are referred to as industrial oils. They require the use of chemical solvents such as hexane to extract the oil from the seed. The oils are then hydrogenated at high temperatures and are then deodorized. Processed oils have been pushed past their heat tolerance and have become rancid during their processing.
These oils are rich in Omega-6 polyunsaturated acids. While we may need a small amount of omega-6’s in our diet the best range of omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is 2:1 or even better 1:1. The modern diet has dramatically shirted this ratio up to 15 to:1 and even up to 50:1.
When you heat these dangerous oils they form a poison, and since everything you swallow has to be processed by the liver, they end up damaging it over time, causing this huge epidemic of fatty liver disease we are seeing in most of the industrialized world.
Also, as a side note: avoid flaxseed oil: it contains too much inherent heat, which is especially harsh to both the liver and the spleen. So you must carefully choose the type of oil you use for cooking. Yes, it may be much more expensive than the cheap industrial highly processed oils, but your health is worth it.
Here are some other reasons for a fatty liver, but again, by far, from what I can see in my patients, the use of the cheap vegetable oils accounts for a large percentage of the fatty liver disease.
Other Things To Avoid
Avoid white refined table sugar and agave, both of which are poisonous to the liver. Too much refined sugar and fructose corn syrup causes a fatty buildup in the liver and in fact some studies show that sugar can be just as damaging to the liver as alcohol. Eat the more natural forms of sugar such as jaggery, coconut sugar, maple syrup, succanat, evaporated cane juice and raw honey.
Some people take kava kava, an herb for symptoms of menopause or to help them relax. But studies show that it can keep the liver from functioning correctly and can lead to hepatitis and liver failure. Some countries have restricted its use or banned it altogether, but it is still available in the U.S.
Avoid high doses of Vitamin A supplements as they can disturb the liver function. It’s best to get this vitamin through fresh fruit and vegetables, especially those that are red, orange or yellow in color.
Acetaminophen used for pain, headaches, cold symptoms and insomnia can cause a lot of liver damage if taken at too high a dose or for too long. I once had a patient who took the recommended dose of acetaminophen every night for years to help her sleep, but even at the normal dose it damaged her liver to the point where she needed a liver transplant.
Please be careful of your intake of alcohol because it can definitely cause a fatty liver even if you’re not an alcoholic or addicted to alcohol since it is extremely damaging to the liver.
No medicines have been approved to treat fatty liver disease since, by nature, all pharmaceuticals are toxic to the liver.
This is where Ayurveda comes in. We have numerous treatments to quickly and effectively reverse fatty liver disease, including diet, daily routine, cleansing techniques and herbs to heal the liver.
First and foremost, include organic extra-virgin cold-pressed pure olive oil in your diet. Keep in mind that most of the olive oils found in the local supermarkets are processed with heat and chemicals and have lots of vegetable oils blended into them, making them just as dangerous as the plain vegetable oils just mentioned. Many people think they are eating a heart-healthy oil when they buy these cheap olive oils on the market. Search out the pure, more expensive cold pressed, extra virgin olive oils loaded with polyphenols to keep your liver as healthy as you can.
The ancient doctors of India said that ghee was easier to digest than any oil. Make sure the ghee you get is from grass-fed cows as they make lots of omega-3’s when they eat grass. Most of the cows in the United States are fed grains, so their milk and butter will contain very high levels of omega-6’s as a result, which causes lots of fatty liver disease, as well as cancer and diabetes. So if you make ghee, make sure the butter you’re using is from grass-fed cows.
Keep your liver happy by consuming only olive oil and ghee. Olive oil, avocado oil and coconut oil are considered fruit oils, and while it is true that they are not classified as vegetable oils, and are therefore more healthy, we still do not recommend the widespread use of avocado and coconut oils as they are very heavy, cold and difficult to digest. Just stick with the olive oil to be on the safe side.

Bitter melon, also known as bitter gourd or karela is very good for healing the liver. Its bitter taste helps to pull toxins from the liver. The liver actually heats up when it is holding onto a lot of toxins, so we teach our patients how to cook with lauki squash, which is the most cooling food for the liver. Yellow squash and green zucchini are a good second choice. We also use various liver clay packs and transdermal creams made with deglychrryzed licorice to cool a heated liver.
Cooked beets, artichokes, moringa leaves and the drumstick from the moringa tree are also excellent for detoxifying the liver.

Turmeric is considered the best friend to the liver as it helps it to detoxify, but it quickly becomes its enemy if you take capsules of it, or even worse, curcumin, which is the active ingredient in the turmeric. Both will overly heat the liver, and upset its function. Just cook with turmeric in the diet. It is easiest to assimilate it if you cook it into a fat, such as boiled milk or sautéed in ghee or olive oil. Don’t cook with the fresh root of the turmeric, as it is also too heating to the liver. And be careful of the turmeric sold in some Indian markets as it could be a white or clay powder with a yellow dye sprayed onto it.
Ayurveda has lots of herbs for the liver which can both clean it and cool it down. This is an important issue, because there are many herbs, found in both Ayurveda and other systems of healing which clean the liver, but most heat the liver as they do this. Especially milk thistle, which, while it may have lots of benefit to the liver it also heats it up tremendously in the process of healing it, which can backfire on you in this modern age when the liver is so hot and distressed by many of the thousands of chemicals we have allowed into our environment, all of which are heating. 
So we must pull from our vast array of cleansing liver herbs only those which keep the liver cool as they clean it. 
And the best news of all is that we actually have herbs which can regenerate the liver cells once they have been damaged. That’s the good news about the liver — it is quite good at regenerating, you just have to know how to do it.
Which is why we have an excellent track record of treating fatty liver disease, especially if it is detected in its early stages before it has progressed to severe cirrhosis of the liver.
Please learn how to take good care of the liver as the ancient Ayurvedic doctors considered it the most important organ in the body since it has over 500 functions, the most important of which is that it keeps the blood clean for optimum brain function.
As I just mentioned, the liver is very good at rejuvenating itself, unlike some of the other organs in the body, and you can usually reverse a fatty liver if you put into action many of the methods I have mentioned here. By following these guidelines you can live an extremely healthy life if you keep your liver in good shape, as almost every disease process you can think of begins with weak liver function.
