Devadāru – from the Sanskrit deva, ‘god,’ and dāru, ‘wood’ or ‘tree’ literally means ‘tree of the gods.’  There are currently 126 documented species of pines in the world. In my ancestral homeland of Jharkhand, in North East India, the Pinus roxburghii (Pinus longifolia) commonly known as “chir pine” or “longleaf Indian pine,” decks our landscape with its majestic and aromatic presence. My father, Vaidya Kameshwar Mishra, used pine needles extensively in his practice, but particularly to address female hormonal issues – for women of all ages. In Ayurveda, devadaru is used in many different recipes and formulas as a primary ingredient. 

Best Yogavahi for SVA Hormone-Modulating Formulas and a Great Rasayana

The ancient ayurvedic healers who cognized the health benefits of pine listed how the tree had a long, sturdy, and healthy life and was impervious to seasonal changes:  pine trees display a unique tolerance to climactic change and variations. They easily tolerate scorching summer temperatures, but also thrive in cold weather, snow, and ice. This tolerance to weather extremes translates into this tree’s unique health-endowing prabhava (post-digestive energetic health properties). Let us see what the 14th century source textbook of Bhava Mishra, the Bhav Prakash Nighantu has to say about Devadaru:

Devadāru laghu snigdhaṁ tiktoṣṇaṁ kaṭupāki ca| vibandhādhmānaśothāmatandrāhikkājvarāsrajit| pramehapīnasaśleṣmakāsakaṇḍūsamīranut||25||   bhā. pra. karpūrādivarga

See all the amazing properties of the divine Pine Tree in a word by word translation of this verse. Devadaru is:

Laghu:  Light;

Snigdhaṁ: Unctuous;

Tiktoṣṇaṁ:  Bitter and warm;

Kaṭupāki: Pungent vipak (post digestive effect);

Vibandhā:  ‘Locked up’ or obstructed apana – supports the proper downward flow of apana;

Adhmān:  Samana vata imbalance causing bloating and discomfort – relieves this uncomfortable condition;

Sothāma:  Inflammation due to ama (toxins) – detoxifies the blood and muscles to reduce inflammation these tissues;

Tandrā:  Drowsiness – takes away drowsiness by reinvigorating the blood;

Hikka:  Hiccough – calms hiccough caused by lack of coordination between samana and udana;

Jvarāsrajit: addresses fever – particularly fever due to toxins or doshic imbalances in the blood tissue;

Prameha:  helps balance the loss of useful substances through urination;

Pīnas:  Chronic sinusitis- helpful for this condition.

Sleṣmakāsa:  Cough with mucous expectoration – useful in this condition.

Kaṇḍūsamīranut :  Itchy skin due to vyana vata aggravation – relieves this type of itchiness.

Recently, I was doing some research for additional hormonal modulators for women, and I remembered my father’s teachings on Devadaru. Did you know that devadaru also carries therapeutic aromatic properties? The scent of the devadaru tree is particularly uplifting for a woman according to the shastras. I decided to make a Devadaru or Pine Needle Herbal Memory Nectar Drop to make all its hormone balancing properties available for women.  I also went ahead and revised my Flash Freeze formula and added Devadaru to it to further help with menopausal hot flashes and symptoms.

My SVA Herbal-Memory Nectar drops carry the intelligence of the devadaru; the vegetable glycerine base acts as the best yogavahi (carrier) to deliver the properties of the pine needles to deep tissues. A yogavahi, as my father explained, is an intelligent ingredient that enhances the delivery and interaction of all ingredients in a formula.  Pine Needle carries all the properties of the best yogavahi. But in addition to that, it is also a great rasayana  – it helps reverse aging, promotes longevity, and strengthens immunity.

Why and how do pine needles support a woman’s physiology? 

In general terms, Devadaru pacifies apana vata that governs the reproductive area); it also helps reduces inflammatory toxins by cooling off the pitta of the blood. Overall, it is a great plant for pacifying all vata subdoshas.

On a more specific level:  First, it lubricates all the dry micro-circulatory channels due to its unctuousness and further opens and enlivens the channels with its warmth.  Usually, when we use unctuous herbs and foods, we risk clogging the ‘srotamasi,’ or physical channels.  But pine needles, due to their laghu or light quality can enter into any micro-channel and support the flow of hormones in the channel so that they reach and interact with the organs and organ systems.

Lubricating and enlivening the physical channels is no small point, especially as a woman ages. Due to advancing age, or other factors, the micro-circulatory channels transporting the hormones can become dry, stiff, and narrow. In particular, during the vata time of life, starting the 3rd quarter around age 65 and above, a vata aggravating diet, or vata aggravating routine with poor sleep will do the trick. Great exposure to EMF devices that carry electro-magnetic fields also promotes such imbalancing.  In these situations, even though a woman’s body may still be producing all the essential hormones, the poor flow and delivery of the hormones will be similar to her body not producing any hormones at all, and result in early aging symptoms.

Pine needles are slightly bitter in taste.  Bitter tasting things are made primarily of akash or the space element according to Ayurveda. This is said to help open and detoxify overall circulatory channels.

Pine needles are also known to be ushna or warm, so we know they give deep thermogenic enlivening activity to the channels.

Last but not least the vipak or post-digestive effect is pungent. This helps burn the micro-molecules of ama that otherwise clog the micro circulatory channels.

So you see this is how Devadaru helps a woman’s physiology: it cleans and clears the paths of the micro and macro channels to better deliver the hormones. When my Devadaru Herbal Memory Nectar is taken along with the SVA Femi Ojas, or Shakti for Her drops, it aids in their delivery faster and more efficiently and results are more visible more quickly. In this capacity, Devadaru is a fantastic yogavahi for all these nectar drops as it enhances their delivery and action to further support a woman’s physiology.

The gut-brain axis states that a healthy gut populated by flourishing friendly bacteria can help you think more clearly; it can make you more resolute in your outlook and decision; give you steady mood mode; and helps generate neuro-transmitters that support brain functioning fully.

Friendly bacteria or beneficial microorganisms inhabiting our gut and hosted by our body were a central part of SVA healing in my father’s, Vaidya Kameshwar Mishra’s clinic. We do not find a straightforward discussion of friendly bacteria in Ayurvedic texts, only an indirect one, such as through the discussion of the health promoting properties of yoghurt. However, for my father, this was the missing puzzle in many conditions for patients who came to him with chronic ailments.

As far as I am aware, my father coined the term yogini-s to refer to the friendly bacteria in our gut. Yogini – from the Sanskrit root word “yog” (akin to the English “yoke”) because they are the ones who conjugate the external world with the internal biochemical environment of our bodies. They bring it together through their metabolic activity, by breaking down nutrients and nutritional packets that we ingest, making them available for absorption and use by the body. But not just that! They also add in their own pranic energy in the process, so that the nutrition that gets absorbed is further enlivened and enhanced in its properties for our use.

The friendly bacteria present in the gastrointestinal tract are the foundation of our overall health, the health of our immune system, and more. In skin care supplying and ensuring the survival of these micro-organisms for our skin care regimen is essential because these yogini-s (friendly bacteria) enhance the pranic coordination between the skin and the environment, helping the skin to receive more soma from the environment and thus produce more ojas (neurotransmitters and immune supporting factor).  In turn, more ojas supports the barrier function of the skin, which helps protect the body from infection and the hazardous effects of the xenobiotic (household chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, etc.) and vibrational toxins (EMFS).  Furthermore, their colonization on the skin (just as in the GI tract) protects the skin from the growth of any number of unfriendly bacteria.

Friendly Bacteria on the Inside

Yogurt:  mix 80/20 ratio of spring water to home-made yogurt.  Add Soma Salt to taste and a few pinches of Mom’s Masala. Blend well in a blender.  This is a delicious drink to help replenish your friendly bacteria of the gut. Lassi is reputed for its health benefits for the digestive system.

Takra:  Takra is obtained from the churning of yoghurt into butter. The yellowish liquid that results when the fat content is separated, is called Takra. It is highly populated with friendly bacteria, and is considered a superfood by Ayurveda, because it is very balanced in its ratio of soma to agni – the churning action infuses further agni energy into the yoghurt, making takra by far easier to digest than lassi.

You can make fresh buttermilk or takra by combining 20% fresh yogurt with 80% water (room temperature) and blending on high speed for 5 -10 minutes in the blender. You may then take out the foam top, and sprinkle Soma Salt to taste.  You may also add ¼ tsp toasted cumin seeds or some Mum’s Masala per 8 oz. of buttermilk.  Make sure to drink only with lunch not dinner. Best is to have a sip and then a bite.

Friendly Bacteria on the Outside – Synbiotic Skin Care

The best time to nurture the friendly bacteria of our skin is right before we go to bed.  This is because we have fewer disturbances from computers and cell phones.  The EMF/EMR from these devices suffocate and burn the friendly bacteria.  Also at night our exposure to airborne xenobiotics (external toxins) is less.  This factor also weakens the survival of friendly bacteria.

According to a Harvard health publication, scientific evidence shows certain illnesses — including Crohn’s disease — can be managed with foods and supplements containing certain kinds of live bacteria. The friendly bacteria are called probiotics. Pro and biota meaning “for life.”“People are hearing the word ‘probiotics’ but I don’t think they understand just how important they are for their health,” said Marianne Teitelbaum, who practices Ayurvedic medicine.After a newborn is breastfed, Teitelbaum says, “the friendly bacteria start to grow in the lining of the intestinal tract.”“These friendly bacteria are the foundation of not only our immune system but of our total health because they perform many important functions.” Those are:

1. Training the Immune System

“The immune system has intelligence to know what to attack, like viruses and bacteria,” said Teitelbaum. “Once you lose your frieandly bacteria, your immune system loses its intelligence and starts attacking your food or body,” which can trigger food allergies and/or autoimmune diseases.

2. Defending Against Invading Organisms 

“Every breath you take, there’s infection going in — strep, flu viruses. And the friendly bacteria are the first line of defense against all kinds of these invading organisms. If you have friendly bacteria it decreases your chances of catching colds and flus; mono and HPV,” said Teitelbaum.

A patient emailed me a question about using an herbal glyceride drop and a powdered herb that was not from Vaidya Mishra’s Shaka Vansya product line.  I won’t name the products here but after researching the ingredients, this was my response to him:“The glyceride is in an alcohol base.  The alcohol is used as a preservative. Why is a preservative needed?  Because the ingredients are dead and would rot away without the alcohol.  Also the alcohol is “agneya” meaning it increases Agni.  Once in the gut, the alcohol will destroy the probiotics and heat up the liver. The powder’s ingredients also are dead and therefore contains preservatives.  One big problem is that it uses Magnesium Stearate as a binder.  This ingredient is toxic.

Potentially Harmful Effects of Magnesium StearateMagnesium stearate is formed by adding a magnesium ion to stearic acid. The compound has lubricating properties, which is why it’s often used in the making of supplements, as it allows the machinery to run faster and smoother, and prevents the pills or capsules from sticking to each other.

However, previous research has shown that stearic acid suppresses T cells—your natural killer cells—which are a key component of your immune system. According to many studies, stearic acid causes the collapse of cell membrane integrity—an effect that was found to be time and dose dependent—which, ultimately, can destroy cell function.

This is why I only use Vaidya Mishra’s SVA products.  I absolutely know that he uses no alcohol or other preservatives or binders in his products.  The reason he can get by without all the toxic ingredients that the other manufacturers use is because of the knowledge passed down through his Shaka Vansya lineage of how to maintain the life of the herb even after making it into an medicine.  This knowledge is so precious and lost to the world.  The result is that the ingredients don’t disintegrate and all of the intelligence (Prana) of the herbs are available for healing.  In all other products the ingredients are dead. Even if they are organic they are still dead.  When they are dead, then Nature’s intelligence is missing and the ingredients cause some confusion to the physiology and sometimes actual harm.”

While you may get some good effect from the other products, it will always be at some cost.  For example, the glyceride may relieve some bloating and gas, but the alcohol stresses the friendly bacteria and the liver.  We always want only good effects, no side effects.

The point here is that all nutritional products sold today use ingredients that are dead and therefore contain preservatives and other ingredients as binders and lubricants that may be toxic.  Vaidya Mishra’s products contain ingredients that maintain Nature’s intelligence without those toxic ingredients.  To my knowledge, they are the only products on the market that accomplish that.”

 Guduchi is known primarily for its rasayana properties: full rejuvenation for all 7 physical bodily tissues, organs and organ systems, and the mind. • Somavalli:  It is full of soma.

• Rasayani:  It is a true rasayana – rasayana number one, which can reverse aging and support the immune system and detoxify.  There are so many ways it acts as rasayana, preventing disease and reversing aging.  In this sense, it is the number herbal formulation one can and should take on an ongoing basis as a general rejuvenative.

• Mandali devanirmita: this means it was made by the gods, several gods.  In that sense, it carries the blessings of all the gods.

• Sangrahini:  It helps to accumulate or build-up the dhatus.  It works in the sandhis (gaps) between the dhatus to enhance the absorption of nutrients to build and strengthen the dhatus. Thus, if there is any dhatu kshaya (depletion), it helps build or maintain the dhatus by enhancing absorption.

• Dosatrayamatr: It pacifies all three doshas.

• Vaksyagnidipini:  Vaks means ‘heart’ and Guduchi enhances the flame of sadhak agni. Guduchi does this by cleaning the vibrational gap of the heart.  It helps us digest emotional stress or emotional thoughts by cleaning the gap of sadhak agni.

Ayurveda is a treasuretrove of medicinal herbal preparations, specially rejuvenating herbal synergies.  And a select few of them are even more highly prized as they also fall under the category of  ‘Amrit’ preparations. Literally, the term “amrit” means: life-bestowing, from a + mrit = no + death.

Rasayanantu tatjneyam yajjaravyadhinasanam Yatha’mrta

Dravyas or herbs and plants or herbal synergies that are designated to be amrta are rasayana by definition, rejuvenating to the whole body and mind. Dravya-s or specific herbs or formulations carry many properties, immediate and latent. An herb may have an initial good property but a latent negative impact. Herbs that are rasayana carry life-supporting and bliss-enhancing properties through and through, they are satwic, they raise our consciousness and overall well-being.  The verse says ‘whatever herb has that origin and, of course, that prabhav’.  The prabhavas, ultimate effect or action, is embedded within the herb, and carries the stamp of its origin – how it came to be in existence. In Ayurveda, we like to say that prabhavas are gifted by Aditatwa, the originator of all, the primeval creational energy.  That is why these rasayana dravyas (substances) have the capacity to reverse aging or slow down aging. They increase immunity, protect from diseases, and/or cure diseases.

Praval Panchamrit: Ancient Ayurvedic Formula for Highest Bioavailable Calcium with Coral & Pearl – 

• Pacify All 5 Pitta and 5 Vata Dosha-s

Praval means coral, and panchamrit literally means: five nectars. This ancient classical rasayana formula with coral is the sum total of 5 life-bestowing amrit ingredients. Not one. Or two. But 5. Let’s look into this further.

In Ayurveda we find a vast knowledge of health benefiting marine based medicinal dravyas or materials.  Praval Panchamrit is one of those. A very famous classical formula  traditionally composed of pearl, red coral, mother of pearl, *kauri, and conch.  This formula is very popular, particularly in North India. Countless Indian herbal companies prepare and sell this formula, but alas, most contain heavy metals, and/or mercury, as the label indicates: Praval Panchamrit Ras (ras designates heavy metals and/or mercury.  Heavy metals and/ormercury are added to act as “yogavahi,” carriers that enhance delivery. This makes the product more effective and therefore more marketable, but at a very high price for the individual’s health. We all know of the toxic side-effect of heavy metals, specially when they are not prepared according to the ancient guidelines. (*Kauri – cowry or cowrie – is the common name for a group of small to large sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Cypraeidae, the cowries.)

In my SVA lineage we do not use mercury, because we do not need it for enhancing the delivery of the calcium or the other  ingredients in this formula. My SVA lineage has alternative healthy methods of making the ingredients most readily bio-available. In addition, for example, in our SVA formula of Praval Panchamrit, I use only the best quality products of sea shells, only the environmentally sustainable soft branches of above-the-sea red coral – vs the roots that are typically used, and that deplete the plant.  These branches are called shaka praval (shaka means branch). We also use the softer umbillical area of the mother of pearl – an area less than one inch diameter where the pearl sits.  And we use only the smaller and softer ‘baby’ kauri shells.  These forms give us smoother and lighter molecules that are more intelligent and more easily absorbed and assimilated by the body. You should know as well that my red coral is gathered from ‘above the sea’ cultivation grounds, not dredged up from under the sea.  This method is  eco-friendly and sustainable. Due to concerns of radiation contamination, the coral branches that I use have been sourced in the Caribbean, not Okinawa, Japan – a primary source of commercially used coral.

The Making of Praval Panchamrit and What it Can do For You

After carefully selecting and scanning these marine materials for quality, our SVA facilities in India process and grind them in raw, organic cow’s milk.  Then we incinerate them into a fine bhasma (nano-particles from repeated incinerations).  The final product  is a micro-molecule, sukshma, powder. This preparation is know to pacify all five pitta sub-doshas: pachak, ranjak, bhrajak, alochak, and sadhak. Yet, at the same time, it is tri-doshic, or balancing for all doshas, in a perfect way.  Being highly nutritive, it pacifies vata dosha, because anything that nurtures and restores the body helps pacify vata.  This highly intelligent form of calcium reaches the bones right away and nurtures them.  The bone tissue is mostly governed by vata dosha. So, when you nurture the bones you also pacifiy vata.  Interestingly, even though it is highly alkalizing and somagenic (giving cooling, nurturing soma), it does not clog the srotas, the physical channels.  In fact it is channel opening due to its qualities of sukshma (minute), smoothness, and mobility.  In this way, it also helps pacify kapha – an added bonus!

Calcium – Why We Need It & Why We Often Don’t Metabolize It

Calcium is a mineral necessary for life – our bodies need it in large quantities to build and keep our bones – and teeth – strong and healthy.  Calcium alkalizes the blood, oxygenates it, and keeps it healthy. Calcium also nourishes our nerves and helps them fulfill their function of sending chemical signals and messages along the neural pathways to aid our muscles contract.

But the downside is that regular calcium molecules, whether ingested through diet or supplementation, are hard to absorb and be utilized by the bones, pariticularly in conditions of osteopenia or osteoporosis.  In this situation, according to Ayurveda, the body’s overall metabolism is already compromized and unable to process and eliminate fully, generally resulting from toxic build-up in the tissues that cause join inflammation and degeneration. So when we add calcium to the diet, the large heavy molecules do not get fully absorbed or processed putting further load on the metabolic fire. Calcification caused by the intake of dumb calcium is one concern. The other and primary concern that can be addressed by Praval Panchamrit is related to the pitta body type and low-bone density.  High pitta people – typically those with a pitta-predominant body type – receive more agni from nature, from the environment. This body type automatically receives more agni or metabolic energy. Due to this fact, they have a tendency to go low in bone tissue and bone density and strength as they age. Another way to understand this would be: the pitta body type or pitta aggravated person has acidic tendency and thus needs more alkalinity in the blood.  For one, they actually ‘burn’ calcium floating in the blood; and on the other hand, to buffer the high acidity in the blood the body pulls from its own calcium reservoir – namely the bones.  The blood must have the proper pH level at all times. This is why these people have a tendency toward developing osteopenia or osteoporosis –  they consume the calcium that’s in their blood and leach it from their bones.

Because of this tendency, they require more soma (lunar energy) from various sources to stay balanced at all times.  Calcium is one of the most dense forms of soma! Praval Panchamrit is the ideal classical formula, with the highest possible concentration of soma that pacifies and cools all five pitta sub-doshas.  It’s so powerful that we use only a few pinches at a time. In my practice, and those of my SVA doctors, I have seen many high-pitta people with bone-density problems using my Soma Cal^TM with great results. However, even the Soma Cal^TM is not enough to reverse the depletion of calcium from the bone tissue in these individuals. This is where Praval Panchamrit comes in. With calcium not from one, but 5 sources, full of soma, it is ideal for those who have been diagnosed with bone loss, or those with the tendency to low pH, acidic body types, or even hyperacidity.

It has been my long-standing desire to make this classical formula available. However,  sourcing all the right materials, particularly the specific parts needed, in the perfect quality was not easy.  It has taken my SVA team a long time to do so. We now finally have it. But only in a very limited – I received only 10 kgs in this first shipment. The bio-sustainably harvested raw material are very hard to procure, and specially not available in large quantities.

What or When to Use Praval Panchamrit?

Bone Support: If you know your bone tissue needs more support or you have low calcium levels, this formula is ideal for you. Add 3-5 pinches of Pravala Panchamrit along with 3-5 pinches of Guduchi Satwa to a 1/4 glass of water. Stir and drink.   (Read the benefits of Guduchi Satwa below.)  Or you can add the powder mixture to 1/4-½ tsp. of honey. Mix well. Have this twice a day.  For bone loss take three times a day.

Stomach Hyperacidity: Three to five pinches of Praval Panchamrit with two pinches of DGL Powder in half a cup of warm spring water. Mix well. Take twice a day – after  breakfast and after dinner.

Eyes and Vision (tired vision or burning tired eyes):  Five pinches of Praval Panchamrit with one Wild Amla Tablet^TM.  Crush the tablet and mix both in half cup of spring water.  Take twice a day.

Blood purfication (amavisha – reactive toxins – reflecting on the skin):  Three to five pinches of Praval Panchamrit with five pinches of Manjishta powder in four ounces of warm spring water.  Mix well and drink.  Take twice day after breakfast and after dinner.

Sweat odor (indicative of toxins in the fat tissue):  Boil one cup of spring water for three  minutes.  Remove from heat.  Add five pinches of Indian Sarsaparilla and five pinches of Praval Panchamrit.  Mix well and drink.  Take twice a day after breakfast and after dinner.

Nourishment for Lungs: Take three to five pinches of Praval Panchamrit with 1 tsp. of  SVA Chyawanprash.  Mix well.  Take twice a day after breakfast and after dinner.

General Immune Support: Take three to five pinches of Praval Panchamrit and ten drops of Lung Formula HMN^TM. Mix well in four ounces of spring water.  Take twice a day after breakfast and after dinner.

Chronically Compromised Immunity: Three to five pinches of Praval Panchamrit with ten drops of Abhrak Bhasma HMN^TM.  Mix well in four ounces of spring water.  Take twice a day after breakfast and after dinner.
