Description

The bark from the symplocos racemosa tree, called lodhra in Sanskrit, is an ancient Ayurvedic herb. It has been used for thousands of years to cool pitta and especially to improve women’s health.

According to Ayurveda, lodhra is a divyaushadhi (divine herb). This means that it contains a lot of the “a” vibration of pure consciousness, and this plays a major role in its healing ability. It is the “a” value, or divine quality, within the plant which heals.

As with any other divyaushadhi (divine herb), the delicate “a” vibration of lodhra must be protected at every stage of growth, harvesting, storage and preparation in order for it to be effective.

Vaidya Mishra takes great pains to ensure that the lodhra he uses maintains the full divine “a” value. For this reason, he often calls the lodhra that he offers “alodhra” to emphasize the “a” value still lively in it.

Lodhra For Firming The Body

According to Bhava Prakash, lodhra is shavaro (making the body and skin very attractive) and galavastatha (helping the whole body to maintain its shape). In fact, the very name lodhra in Sanskrit means “that which makes the body firmer.”

This is due in large part to the strong grahi (absorption enhancing) property of lodhra. You may be familiar with other grahi herbs like cumin seeds. Grahi herbs help absorb fluids in the body, which is why they are helpful in the case of diarrhea.

Lodhra is a much more powerful grahi herb than cumin. If there is already a tendency towards constipation, it should not be used in crude form, unless combined with other herbs under the guidance of a Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner.

The constipating effect is reduced when lodhra is taken as Alodhra Herbal Memory Nectar, because the kashaya (astringent) property is not present.

Grahi herbs not only help absorption in the colon, but also help absorb excess fluids in other parts of the body. This contributes to the firming ability of lodhra.

Lodhra is not only grahi but also sheeta (cooling) and laghu (light). This is an unusual combination which makes lodhra very helpful for reducing inflammation and heaviness in the body due to excess fluid. The result is a firm, attractive body.

Lodhra Improves Complexion, According to Ayurveda

By reducing inflammation and pitta, lodhra also helps to make the skin more healthy. Imbalanced pitta is a major contributing factor towards poor complexion.

In addition, the “a” value of this divine herb gives a radiance to the skin from deep within.

The “a” value of lodhra, cleans the light of the soul, inspires the heart lotus to open, and keeps the mind connected to the light of the soul. This inner radiance immediately shows on the face, making it very attractive.

Lodhra Has Long Been Used For Hemorrhaging

When pitta is very high in the body, hemorrhaging sometimes occurs. Many high-pitta people experience this as nose bleeds. Raktapitta is a disease described in the ancient Ayurvedic texts where the hemorrhaging becomes very widespread, due to very high pitta in the blood.

Lodhra is recommended by Ayurveda in the case of raktapitta. The grahi (absorbing) quality of lodhra helps to thicken the blood and stop the hemorrhaging. The kashaya (astringent) property of lodhra also contributes to this and gives intelligence to the blood.

The sheeta (cooling) property soothes the the irritable nature of excess pitta in the blood and reduces inflammation.

The Pro-Alkaline Property Of Lodhra Helps The Healing Process

In the Mahabharata war, of ancient India, lodhra was used to help heal battle wounds.

The healing process is fastest when the body has a neutral to alkaline pH. Injury almost always involves inflammation, and inflammation creates a high pH environment in the body.

By lowering the pH of the body, lodhra helps make it easier to control inflammation and makes it possible for the body to heal more quickly.

Lodhra Is Very Helpful For Postpartum Care

The challenges of pregnancy combined with the trauma of giving birth can cause internal inflammation as well as physical injury for the mother. There is a need for healing immediately after giving birth.

Vaidya Mishra’s family tradition of Ayurveda has been using lodhra for thousands of years to help heal the mother’s body after childbirth. It also firms the tissues and helps the mother to regain her normal shape.

Lodhra helps to detoxify the blood, to take away excess heat and to reduce weight due to internal inflammation.

The best way to use lodhra for new mothers is Alodhra Herbal Memory Nectar.

Digestion (agni) is usually diminished after childbirth, especially if anesthesia is used. If digestion is weak, using the crude Alodhra Bark or Alodhra Bark Powder may not be effective, because it must be digested before it can be used, just like food.

The herbal memory nectar form of lodhra does not require digestion like the crude herb. Alodhra Herbal Memory Nectar is able to deliver the healing properties of lodhra to the tissues of the body right away, even if digestion is weak.

What You Will Learn In This Course

You will study directly from the Sanskrit verses of Bhava Prakash describing lodhra. In this 16 minute audio course with Vaidya Mishra, you will learn the many Sanskrit names of the herb, as well as its most important properties. You will also learn some uses for lodhra which come specifically from his family tradition.

How to Use the Course Materials

When you download the zip file for this section of the course (and unzip it using a free unzip program like 7-Zip), you will find a PDF file (which can be opened with the free Adobe Reader) and an MP3 file (which can be played on any MP3 player such as iPod or iTunes).  You can listen to the audio alone, but for the first time through (at least), we recommend that you follow along with the PDF document to make sure that all of the concepts are clear.  The PDF’s sometimes contain visual diagrams in addition to the Sanskrit verses.  If you learn visually, reading along with the PDF will be helpful.

We also recommend reviewing the PDF, and re-listening to the MP3 file many times, so that you begin to recognize the knowledge and own it.  These MP3 files are especially good to put on your MP3 player so you can listen in the car.  Just as it is easy to remember songs you hear over and over on the radio, you will find that the knowledge in these lectures will stick to you with no effort when you hear them over and over.  You will also find that your understanding of the material deepens each time you hear them.
