Where Ayurveda & Vastu Meet!

Ancient vedic culture is timeless, because as Vaidya Mishra used to say, it offers the blueprint of the universe. The seers that cognized its foundational precepts and transmitted it to generations to come, are the forefathers of ALL nations on earth! The language of the vedas flows through the Nature and the laws that create, sustain, and perpetuate life on earth and in the universe. There are so many fields of vedic specialization. But did you know that all these fields intersect and meet and complete each other in so many ways?

In this newsletter, we show you a few points about how Ayurveda and Vastu – the vedic science of architecture and home design – aligns with Ayurveda, the science of health and happiness.

Vaidya Mishra was an unmatched expert in Ayurveda, and many of his ayurvedic teachings and insights found their way into the work of vastu expert Sherri Silverman.

Sherri Silverman is a best-selling author, renowned expert in Vastu, and exquisite artist. She is a student of all things veda! Ayurveda has played an important role in her personal and professional life. She met Vaidya Mishra many years ago and attended many of his courses. In her famous book, “Vastu: Transcendental Home Design in Harmony with Nature,” she applies many of Vaidya Mishra’s ayurvedic teachings. They are simple powerful applications.

Here are some key passages from her book where she discusses and incorporates ayurveda into vastu, and shows how these sister sciences can help us all in so many ways. For example, the science of marma points. Vaidya Mishra has us given exclusive knowledge on the science of marma points. But did you know that you can also locate marma points in your home?

Here is another key aspect of healthy living that incorporates central ayurvedic precepts taught by Vaidya Mishra.

We all know that prana was a central key teaching of Vaidya Mishra. Sherri shows us how this is the case with Vastu as well.

Sherri Silverman’s book is a treasure trove of vedic knowledge, and is so beautiful and inspiring. Sometimes we do all that we can, but somehow it is still not enough! We know something is off but we are not quite sure why or what. Sherri’s book will not only guide you, but inspire you as well to make those much needed changes that can allow prana to flow and your home to be the sacred space, aligned with Nature, that brings you joy and health, not just a shelter. Sherri offers many services and you can find more information on her website:

How & Why is

SV Ayurveda

Different…

Don’t take it from us, but rather from the countless individuals who have regained total health and happiness by adopting and incorporating Vaidya Mishra’s unparalleled pranic protocols and formulations… Here is a recent testimonial.

Let’s do a quick back-track to how and why Vaidya Mishra had to revisit and revise his ayurvedic offerings when he came to the USA…

Before Ayurveda came to the USA in the late 1970s, all things Asian/Indian were already being studied in the context of an “Orientalist” movement in 18th century Europe. Scholars, philosophers, poets, not only acknowledged the rich legacy of Vedic India, but engaged it in their works, creating a rich legacy of cultural exchange. Ayurveda was not of great importance – just yet – even though it did play a role specifically in the 19th century when there was a pushback in Europe against mainstream medicine and a growing interest in alternative systems like homeopathy, naturopathy and “oriental” medicines.  But the texts were studies as-is – at face-value, without the expert input and interpretation of ayurvedic scholars! And this trend continued…

Fast-forward to the 1960s & 70s in the USA, yoga and meditation guru-s captivate the minds and hearts of the young generation. While these teachers do not directly focuse on Ayurveda, they help cultivate interest in related Vedic fields of knowledge, and soon Ayurveda take center-stage in the 1980s and early 1990s, and is studied for and on its own. But the original problem persists, and Ayurveda is “reduced” to a mechanical stereotyping of tri-doshic health, and medicinal herbs are now “prescribed” as allopathic medicines are prescribed following that tri-doshic, completely undermining the wealth of protocols and knowledge that Ayurveda offers. While the movement to standardize Ayurveda and introduce it as a necessary supportive corrective modality alongside allopathy is laudable, there is much that is lacking in how it is taught and practiced in what we call its “mainstream” version. And this is what Vaidya Mishra needed to addresse.

When Vaidya Mishra arrived to the USA in the early 1990s, after touring and lecturing in Europe and Asia, he immediately realized how the ancient classical remedies were not only not enough to address modern health problems, but they could even be harmful: any herb no matter how rejuvenating will create some amount of detox in the body. Western bodies that have NEVER experienced any detox, and have only been nurtured on harsh chemicals, are unable to get the most out of ancient ayurvedic remedies and recipes. Even though these are timeless and rooted in vedic science, they could NOT be used! The diet, lifestyle, and cultural factors that existed in the USA put the human physiology under great strain and sensitivity. Vaidya Mishra needed to revamp and re-adapt the ancient precept to fit the current needs of modern man. And this is how it all started… One recipe at a time, one formulation at a time, based on what his clients needed or requested. He built a full “pharmacy” of ayurvedic remedies that are soft, gentle, yet potent, that can be used safely via transdermal and transmucosal routes and thus give the benefits MINUS the side-effects.

Reminder: Spice Up Your Sweets! Plus: Sugar-Free Sweeteners – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter May 15, 2025 – #17, Vol 15

We have learnt by now that Spring time is detox time: but did you know Spring time is also the time when all three doshas surface very prominently and wreak havoc in the body?! Regardless of what body type you are, you can go off on all 3 doshas if you do not follow a proper ayurvedic Spring protocol!

So what happens when the doshas surface? The terms “dosh/dosha” does not mean body type, it means “error.” Saying you are/identify as a pitta dosha just means you know you are prone to pitta aggravations or dosha-s! You may get angry, feel hot, have acid stomach etc. If you are Vata Dosha then you are prone to being spaced-out, have poor sleep and poor digestion, dry skin, etc. In the Spring, when the weather warms up, the season is dominated by Kapha dosha.

So this is the time of year it is of utmost importance NOT to eat kapha aggravating foods and to discontinue Kapha aggravating habits. What happen when you don’t? You kapha goes off, and along with toxins that are re-surfacing, all your doshas will go off and you may experience seasonal so-called “allergies;” or catch that “new strain of covid”(!); or get migraine; body-aches; poor sleep; bad digestion; and crave sugar and ice-cream – LOTS OF IT TOO!

Adopting an maintaining a Spring routine and protocol is a topic that require more time. But here is one thing you can quickly and easily do: in western culture we don’t associate spices with sweet dishes… But did you know that spices are even more necessary for sweet dishes? By “spice” we don’t mean chilies and curry powder! We mean a special set of spices according to Ayurveda, such as: cardamom; cinnamon; nutmeg; etc. Why is this?

Sugar-Free Sweeteners

Delicious, Tridoshic, & Healthy!

The sweet taste, as Vaidya Mishra explained, is full of soma. Soma is the heavy, unguent, cooling/cold, sweet cosmic vibrational energy that materializes and is found in fruits, milk, sweet sugary edible items etc. It is the grounding and nourishing aspect of the universe. But it is heavy and hard to digest. And it will not only aggravate kapha, by definition, but throw off pitta and vata as well. Unless we add specific spices to help metabolize and absorb the soma from the sweet dish, we will end up creating a bigger mess in our bodies. And you know what? Once you have tasted sweet dishes with spices, a whole new level of flavor and joy opens up in stomach mind AND heart! So what are these spices necessary for soma metabolism and how do you use them you say?

Vaidya Mishra made a delightful spice mix for sweet dishes, and he called it “madhur masala” – which translate into “sweet spice mix.” He formulated this masala to support the digestion and metabolism of sugar and carbohydrates. Which spices are we specifically talking about? Here’s the list and what each one does:

Green cardamom supports protein metabolism;

Black cardamom, ginger, pink pepper and black pepper all clear-up the digestive channels and enhance the digestive fire;

Indian and American cinnamon support sugar metabolism;

Javitri (mace) and nutmeg are calming and aromatic, and add to the experience of bliss;

Saffron is a great antioxidant and gives added olfactory and digestive satisfaction: it takes the vibration of the soma of the sugar molecules and delivers it to the brain;

Kalunji balances the coordination between sugar digestion and assimilation;

Fennel coordinates the effects of all the other spices and maintains balance between the digestive system and metabolic systems;

Clove opens the channels without heating the body, or creating any imbalance in pitta. And there it is!

Add this masala to your milk, or to yoghurt with some honey, bake with it, or sprinkle it on top of fruit, it will enhance your taste-buds, aid in digestion, and curb your cravings too. Happy Spring Eating!

Reminder: Eternal Feminine Beauty & Bliss: Mom! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter May 8, 2025 – #16, Vol 15

May 12, 2025 by Leave a Comment

Facebook  Twitter  Instagram  Youtube

Sri Lalita Devi is the embodiment of eternal feminine beauty and bliss in the vedic pantheon. This is one reason why Vaidya Mishra named his skincare line after her: she represents the most divine of all cosmic feminine manifestations.

The Lalita Skin-care line is formulated using dravyaguna guidelines from the ancient Vedic texts and core skin-care teachings of SVA; it allows you to experience the ancient traditional beauty and skin-care regimens in a modern easy way. All the ingredients support, nourish and enhance outer AND inner beauty, promote luster, as well as slow- down the aging of the skin. How, you ask?

All the products are artisanaly made in small batches with herbal and floral blends that are 100% chemical- and preservative-free, and therefore do not disturb the vibrational potency of the herbs – or prabhava. Vaidya Mishra knew how to preserve the prana of plants and herbs, through preparations and combinations, and therefore could omit the use of chemical preservatives to maintain the life of a product. Science now confirms that within 60 seconds, anything that is applied on the skin, is already traveling in your blood, and depending on what it contains, it will also cross the blood-brain barrier within seconds as well. What we put on our skin is akin to ingesting it and we may literally be poisoning ourselves – transdermal absorption travels and gets delivered even faster than food – because food has to go through the digestive organs and process and thus requires more time! So be cautious and very conservative when you are choosing facial or body lotions. But there is a lot more to the Lalita Skin Care line…

Vaidya Mishra took things one step further as well. With the Lalita Skincare line, it’s not just about the physical attributes of the herbs on the skin; the herbal ingredients provide a rasayana effect and enhance the coordination between our mental functions as well, thus delivering a positive effect to our gunam , or inner beauty. All of the materials and methods that Vaidya Mishra used enhance our skin’s cellular beauty as well as our spiritual beauty, strengthening our mind-body-satwa connection. Every single plant and flower is endowed with physical as well as vibrational properties. This is called the “prabhava” of a plant. The prabhava of a plant or flower is the energetic vibrational quality that lingers long after its physical molecules have been processed and absorbed by the skin and the body. Every plant, every flower, brings it’s own prabhava.

Vaidya Mishra formulated each and every item in his Lalita line with this knowledge and expertise. For example, the Navratna cream not only has all 21 herbs as the Age-Defying cream, but in addition, it carries the vibrational energetic frequency of the gems associated with each planet. Many users have reported experiencing a calmer mind and happier heart when using this facial cream. Explore the full line and see which formulation is your favorite.

And this Mother’s Day, give your Mom ONLY the best of ayurvedic skincare – full of prana and divine!

Happy Mother’s Day.

Roses smell good and soothe the heart and mind immediately. But they do so so much more for the skin as well. Rose is called the “Queen of the Flower Kingdom” in Ayurveda, because it has countless beneficial properties. Vaidya Mishra loved to use Rose in all his recipes and formulations. Discover our full line of Rose-based ayurvedic formulations and gifts for Mom!

Looking for something a little more supportive for aging skin? This is one of our best-selling Lalita’s items, the facial creams or oil WITH Collagen and Beta-carotene. Ideal for aging skin. these are the only products that contain ingredients from animal source (the Collagen is NOT from bovine but rather aviary – from chicken).

This is the line of facial creams that contain “abhrak” (mineral ash that is highly prized in Ayurveda), from different gems as well as other ingredients. Every single ingredients, including Rose and Jasmine play a crucial role in skin care. For example, Jasmine is “sandhanya” – it tightens the 7 layers of the skin; while Rose alkalizes and cools off blood and can help balance rashes and hot skin. No ingredient was used gratuitously by Vaidya Mishra, or for scenting the cream!

Give Mom the best because she is the best! Facial creams with Pearls, Rose and Jasmine!

Are you craving something sweet after your meals? Do you crave crunchy salty snacks throughout the day? Do you eat your full meal and then even though you feel full, you keep craving salty, then sweet again, then keep eating, much to your dismay?! Is your appetite all over the place and irregular? Let’s talk about this…

Did you know that cravings are your body’s signal system alerting you to things being out of balance? Many things could be off depending on WHAT you are craving…

If you are craving dry, crunchy and crispy and salty, your digestive fire could be low and slow and in-need of re-ignition; if you are craving sweet and more sweet, it could mean that your stomach acid and overall body pH is low and acidic and your body is trying to buffer; if you are craving spicy and sour, it could mean that your are mentally stressed out and need to ground more by supporting digestion further… You get the point: it’s complicated because it’s a science. BUT THERE IS A SIMPLE WAY OF FIXING IT ALL WITH ONE INGREDIENT…

One ingredient only? That’s right! A fruit. That can literally take care of it all. It’s called “amla.” Volumes can be written about it. It has so many amazing properties, AND 60x more vitamin C than any citrus fruit. Watch Vaidya’s video below to learn more.

Since that fruit is not readily available in grocery stores here, and we are not quite familiar with its regular consumption, Vaidya made it easy for us by putting together a delicious and healthy Tamarind Amla preserve – a healthy substitute for Ketchup (!) – you can now have all the benefits of amla immediately and easily. Below is one quick and delicious recipe. But your imagination is really the limit for how you can incorporate this preserve into your daily cooking!
