With celebrity endorsements and amazing “before and after” photos, it’s easy to get pulled into whatever is being billed as the latest and greatest new “secret!” Some of these products really do get results short term, but what we don’t see is that a few months later, the weight comes right back, and many time, along with complications! Desperate to lose weight, we want to believe that there is something that can help. So we just hand over our money and buy the book, the bottle of tablets, the “program” or the membership. And then we get disappointed when yet again it didn’t work. We not end up right back where we started, but a little worse off…

The Cholesterol Myth!

SO, WHAT CLOGS OUR ARTERIES?

I know it will take several generations before we get it out of our minds that cholesterol clogs our arteries! There has been so much research that has been done since the early flawed study from Ansel Benjamin Keys back in 1953, in which he incorrectly asserted that cholesterol clogs our arteries. Since then, study after study, too numerous to mention here, has shown that lowering cholesterol has very little to do with lowering our risk of heart attacks.

 The Lyon Heart Study from France demonstrated how changes in the diet and lifestyle were able to reduce deaths by 70% and to reduce cardiovascular deaths by 76%, all without lowering cholesterol at all. 

 The Nurses’ Health Study which analyzed 84,129 women and published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 82% of heart attacks were attributable to 5 factors, none of which had anything to do with with high cholesterol levels. Factors such as avoiding smoking, alcohol, working out for at least a half hour a day, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a wholesome low-glycemic (low sugar) diet with fiber and plenty of omega-3’s (or good fats).

 Researchers in Japan divided people into 3 groups, those with low cholesterol, those with cholesterol in the normal range and those with high cholesterol. Surprisingly those with the highest levels of cholesterol lived the longest and those with the lowest levels had shortened lifespans.  

 When Americans were consuming whole full-fat foods such as cream, butter, and raw milk from pasture-raised cows, the rate of heart disease was a fraction of what it is now. In fact, once we became afraid of cholesterol and banned these items from the diet in favor of vegetable oils, hydrogenated fats and trans fats such as margarine and Crisco, that’s when the levels of obesity, diabetes and heart disease skyrocketed. 

So if cholesterol in general isn’t the culprit, what does clog our arteries? 

 Well, let’s back up a bit and look at how we test to see if we’re at a risk for heart disease. Blood work is ordered where they measure the total cholesterol, the HDL’s (which are considered the good guys) and the LDL’s (which are considered the bad guys), all of which they say increases our risk for cardiovascular disease. 

  Since we began looking at these parameters decades ago, new research has proven that this approach is no longer relevant and is actually incorrect. To see why, let’s first learn a little more about cholesterol and how important it is to help build our cell walls, nourish the nerve tissue and brain, and supply the raw materials for our adrenal and sex hormones.

First, cholesterol cannot travel in the bloodstream by itself. This is because it is hydrophobic, which literally means water (hydro) and avoiding (phobic). To move cholesterol through the blood stream you need to put it into a container which can transport it around. The container that the body uses to transport cholesterol is called a lipoprotein. We might call these lipoproteins “cholesterol” but in fact cholesterol is only a portion of the cargo that these lipoproteins carry around the bloodstream. 

There are high density lipoproteins (HDL’s), low density lipoproteins (LDL’s), Intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL’S), and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL’s) that carry the cholesterol around. 

As of now, 10 types of HDL’s and 13 types of sub-fractions of cholesterol have been identified. We can no longer think in such general terms as the LDL’s are the bad guys. It turns out that some of them are very light and fluffy and actually protect the arteries. It’s only the smaller, denser oxidized LDL’s which can dig into the arterial walls and start a whole inflammatory process that ultimately creates plaque. 

So let’s back up a minute to discuss the artery wall, which is called the endothelium. The inside of the walls of your arteries are smooth muscle that expands when the heart beats. In other words the arteries are not stiff and hard but elastic and flexible.

The innermost layer of the artery walls is called the endothelium and this is where the damage is done which can lead to a heart attack. 

Let’s also discuss what inflammation and oxidation means. Then we can pull all these puzzle pieces together so you can understand how plaque forms.

Inflammation results when you have an injury or an infection in an area — the immune system cells come to protect your body, and as the immune system cells are released in the area they create inflammation, which usually goes away after the injury or infection. But when inflammation becomes chronic then it can cause big problems such as diabetes, arthritis, cancer, respiratory diseases, pneumonia, chronic liver and kidney diseases and…heart disease. 

One of the main causes of inflammation is oxidation. Metal which is rusting or an apple which turns brown once it is sliced are both examples of oxidation. Atoms have electron pairs which orbit around them, but every so often one of the electrons get loose. The atom with the unpaired electron, known as a free radical, can inflict enormous damage upon your cells and DNA as they frantically search for an electron they can pair with again. The free radicals that come from oxygen, known as oxygen free radicals are the most deadly and damaging kind.

Antioxidants such as vitamins, minerals and many plant chemicals help to neutralize the free radicals limiting the damage they can do to your body. Squirting lemon juice on the apple slices to prevent them from browning is an example of an antioxidant, which comes from the Vitamin C contained within the lemon juice.

Now, back to the endothelium. It is just one cell thick. If your LDL becomes oxidized it becomes highly reactive and can damage the artery wall by burrowing into the wall and creating inflammation. The non-oxidized LDL just travels through the bloodstream not bothering anything, and is harmless. 

So again, the LDL floats around in the bloodstream delivering cholesterol to the cells that need it. But some of the LDL that’s damaged by oxidation infiltrates the endothelium or the wall of the artery which begins the process of inflammation.

Once the immune system notices this damaged oxidized LDL, it sends cells known as monocytes to the scene releasing chemicals called cytokines, many of which are highly inflammatory. This causes the lining of the blood vessels (the endothelium) to secrete sticky little molecules called adhesion molecules that act like glue. If inflammation isn’t stopped in its tracks they’ll release a whole new set of toxins into the walls of the artery, eventually causing what is known as the fatty streak because it is a streak of yellow inside the artery wall which vascular surgeons can actually see during their operations on the arteries. The body tries to contain this fatty streak by building a wall to hold it in. If the cycle is not stopped the fatty streak grows into what is known as plaque. At this point a blood clot might develop to contain everything or calcium could deposit into the affected area. 

You don’t need to memorize all these steps, but by now you should be able to glean from this information that it isn’t the amount of cholesterol which is the important number to note, but the types of particles you are harboring. 

We need to change the testing of cholesterol from one where we are only looking at the total cholesterol, the HDL, and the LDL’s to one which looks at the actual types of LDL particles and if they are oxidized or not.

Some of the forward thinking cardiologists are looking at the very small density LDL’s as these are the ones that are usually prone to oxidation and can burrow into weakened areas of the endothelial lining. 

Other tests which might be important are dividing your triglycerides by the HDL cholesterol. A number of 3 or greater could be more of a predictor of heart disease than just the cholesterol numbers.   

Some are looking at the fasting insulin tests and your insulin resistance because it is felt that sugar plays a large role in developing heart disease since it adds to the stickiness of the LDL’s.

The state of the art test for cholesterol is the NMR particle test, also known as the NMR Lipo-Profile. This test doesn’t just tell you how much HDL and LDL you have, it tells you what kind of LDL. It identifies how many of the LDL particles are small and dense, which are capable of causing plaque, and how many are big and fluffy and far less damaging.

Testing for C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is another test you might want to get since CRP is a marker for inflammation that is directly associated with heart and cardiovascular health. 

Also test for fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is a protein that determines the stickiness of your blood by enabling your platelets to stick together. You need good levels of fibrinogen to stop bleeding if you’ve been injured but you don’t want the levels to be too high since it could affect both the circulation of your blood and could create unwanted clotting if the levels are too high. Normal levels are between 200 and 400 mg/dL.

And you might not realize that testing ferritin is also important. This is because while we want sufficient levels of iron to prevent anemia, believe it or not if the iron levels get too high it could create problems. This is because iron is very susceptible to oxidation. Iron metal when left in the rain rusts very quickly. In other words, it oxidizes. This is usually more of a problem in men since women lose a lot of iron each month with their menstrual cycles, but it is something post-menopausal women should take a look at. That’s why you should never take supplemental iron or even multivitamins with iron unless your blood work shows an iron deficiency. A 1992 study by Finnish researchers who examined ferritin levels in 1,900 men demonstrated that those with high levels of ferritin were more than twice as likely to have heart attacks than those with normal levels.

Another good test to get is the calcium score test which is basically a CT scan of the arteries. It will tell you if you have any plaque build-up in the walls of your arteries and exactly how clogged they are. But keep in mind, if they are clogged the latest research shows that statin drugs don’t actually unclog the arteries. All they do is lower cholesterol. In my practice we have three powerful treatments for scrubbing out the arteries which have proven to be highly successful when our patients retest their arteries with another calcium score test after their treatments. 

There are other tests your cardiologists may decide to run, such as homocysteine, Interleukin-6, F2 Isoprostanes, myeloperoxidase (which measures inflammation and the tendency to form plaque), oxidized LDL, the PLAQ test which measures how likely the plaque is to rupture, the 9p21 test which measures susceptibility to inflammation and the KIF-6 test, a genetic test which if found, dramatically increases the risk for coronary heart disease. 

As you can see, there are a lot of new tests out there, and it’s up to your cardiologist to see which tests are right for you. I am mentioning these here to show you all the recent advances in the field of coronary artery disease and to point out the fact that testing just total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides is very antiquated and tells us very little we need to know about whether or not we are a candidate for a heart attack.

But most important of all is how do we minimize the oxidation of the LDL’s in the first place? 

Well, that’s easy for us as we have always recommended these guidelines in Ayurveda: avoid cigarette smoking, pesticides, too many pharmaceuticals and processed foods. Too many toxins traveling through the liver can heat it up and if it becomes hot and angry it can oxidize the foods you eat instead of processing them in the usual way. Which means that even good foods can become toxic to the body and initiate an inflammatory response. This is why I use several herbs in my practice to cool the heat in the liver, clean it out, and regenerate the liver cells so that the liver becomes more intelligent and doesn’t oxidize the food when it comes into the body. This is also why we teach the patients a healthy diet and teach them how to do correct Ayurvedic cleansing to keep the level of inflammatory toxins down.

One of the ironic things is that the very oils which doctors told us to eat because they contain no cholesterol such as the vegetable oils, margarine, trans and hydrogenated fats, are responsible for causing heart attacks since they form a compound very close to plastic which can clog our arteries and damage our liver very quickly. And even more ironically, ghee, or clarified butter, which has always been highly recommended in Ayurvedic medicine, and is pure cholesterol, prevents plaque buildup in the arteries.

And here’s another big one: Avoid refined white sugar. Sugar is sticky which can gum up the works and damage the artery walls. Plus if you eat too much sugar your insulin constantly goes up to try to lower the sugar in the bloodstream. Normally your insulin takes the sugar out of your blood and deposits it in the muscle tissue. When you exercise and move your muscles your muscles will use the sugar thereby keeping the blood sugar low. But if you are sedentary most of the day, the sugar remains there in the blood and after a while your muscles can no longer hold any more sugar. So they resist the insulin’s efforts to deposit the sugar into them. This is called insulin resistance and as a result your blood sugar goes up as it now has nowhere to go. High blood sugar also causes inflammation in the lining of the arteries which is why diabetics can easily develop heart disease. 

So we have these two big issues: oxidation and inflammation, and insulin resistance and high blood sugar, both of which cause stickiness in the blood.

Please, learn how to change your diet, take good care of your liver, eat healthy fats, limit your exposure to sugar and other chemicals, and learn how to detox. By doing so you should be able to avoid plaque buildup as you age. And remember, it’s not the amount of cholesterol, but whether or not you are oxidizing the fats on your own or if you are eating the dangerous trans fats, and hydrogenated oils which will surely clog up your arteries since they are one molecule removed from plastic.

It’s important to learn this because you might wind up on a statin drug if a doctor sees your cholesterol is high. And the side effects of the statin drugs are much too dangerous to be taken in such a haphazard way if you really don’t need them, which the majority of the population doesn’t. Many of our patients have high cholesterol and their arteries are very clean with no plaque. And I’ve seen people with low cholesterol have heart attacks. That’s why I’m sharing this information with you. We need to change the way we test for clogged arteries. And the first way is to test more accurately than just testing the total cholesterol, the HDL and the LDL cholesterol.

This festival also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year in many parts of India, especially in North India. Chaitra Navaratri is considered an auspicious time for spiritual renewal, cleansing and seeking the blessings of the divine feminine. It symbolizes and ushers in all things good: victory of light over darkness; knowledge over ignorance; justice over evil. Each of the 9 days of Navaratri is associated with a specific aspect of the divine feminine expressed in a distinct color and specific properties. During the 9 days, the divine feminine manifests in all her 9 aspects, bestowing health, wealth, and prosperity. Invoking her or just keeping the divine feminine in your heart and mind at this point in time is auspicious and can help clear your path of obstacles and hindrances. 

Invoking Laxmi, the aspect of the goddess that manifests wealth and prosperity, is considered highly auspicious. There is a story about a mythical and historical character who was able to secure the most greatest wealth. His name is Lord Kuber. In Vedic culture, Lord Kuber is recognized as the initiator of wealth and prosperity. He is the celestial treasurer of the riches of the universe. What is the relationship between Kuber and Laxmi? Lakshmi embodies and is the ultimate repository of all grace and wealth, bestowing blessings for all who seek her. Kuber, on the other hand, is the guardian of material riches, represents material wealth earned through his effort and wise management, from Laxmi herself.

In an ancient story narrating the marriage of Lord Vishnu (as Venkateshwara) to Padmavati, Lord Kuber came to Lord Vishnu’s support. Lord Vishnu could not afford the lavish wedding that Laxmi deserved, and Lord Kuber came in and covered all expenses for them. Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased, so was his wife, and they remained in his debt. To this day, it is said, Lord Vishnu is repaying his debt to Kuber! So when devotees go to the Vishnu’s temple in Tirupati in South India, they generously donate money in Venkateshwara’s Hundi – “donation pot” –to help him pay his debt back to Kuber!

Lord Kuber appears in many ancient Vedic texts with many different epithets: he enjoys the title of “king of the whole world”, “king of kings” (Rajaraja), “Lord of wealth” (Dhanadhipati) and “giver of wealth” (Dhanada). Kubera is also called Guhyadhipa (“Lord of the hidden”). He is also “dikpala” or protector of the North direction although he is also sometimes associated with the East – it is thus good to install his yantra in the North-East corner of your residence. The Atharvaveda calls him the “god of hiding.” In the Manusmriti, he becomes a respectable Loka-pala or “world protector,” and the patron of merchants. In the epic Mahabharata, Kuber is described as the son of Prajapati Pulastya ,and his wife Idavida and the brother of sage Vishrava. The Puranas and the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana grant Kuber unquestioned “godhood” – executer of the laws of Nature that usher in wealth and prosperity. He is also known as Loka-pala – “world protector.”

As the treasurer of the riches of the universe, he is known to have Laxmi Devi’s express blessings, and is usually remembered during Diwali, or the Autumn Festival of Lights in India. 

Bringing in and installing in your home Kuber’s Kolam is considered highly auspicious, since Kuber is a great devotee of Laxmi, and has been bestowed with the title of “treasurer of universal wealth.” In addition, invoking him, and keeping his yantra (the kolam or geometric sacred motif in the North-East part of your home – is said to usher in wealth and prosperity.

The Kuber Kolam is a yantra, a vedic geometric diagram in the form of a grid containing the numbers 20-28 arranged in such an order that all lines, whether read horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, add up to 72. The SVA Kuber Kolam in pure Sterling Silver is an auspicious object that will support and usher in prosperity and abundance in your life and your home when placed/established in the North East corner of your residence. You can recite the Kuber mantra when installing your yantra or play the Kuber mantra – as recited by Vaidya Mishra – in the background, on soft volume. What they Are & What they Do…

One of Ayurveda’s most precious offerings are the self-care rituals designed to keep the body working in harmony with the seasonal changes driven by the journey of the sun across the cosmic skies. Each season brings along its own properties and has great impact on our physical as well as mental and emotional health. Seasonal change is much, so much more, than a day-light savings time kind of change! Our bodies operate differently in each season, and ideally our diet needs to be adjusted, as well as our rest and activity routines. We tend to live our lives oblivious of these seasonal shifts. And it’s ok. But when you start paying attention to what’s happening to your body inside and out depending on the season, and you start adjusting your diet according to the seasonal needs, you will be surprised to discover how it can impact your overall well-being and happiness. Spices and herbs key factors in this context. Here in the West, we tend to think of them solely as flavoring agents, but they are so essential for health. Specially when they are assembled synergistically to play a specific role in our bodies.

Here’s what the massage oil contains and how each ingredient may help you:

Indian Sarsaparilla: Indian Sarsaparilla purifies the fat tissue, fat channels, sweat, sweat glands, and swedavaha srotas (sweat channels) particularly purifying them of amavisha (hot, reactive toxins). 

Nutmeg: (jaiphal) has a ”shamaka” (pacifying) effect on the nerves and calms down prana vata (governing the mind) and will help calm down hyperactivity of the channels that make occur from cleansing them; 

Black Pepper: (maricham in Sanskrit) is excellent for amapachan, burning ama in the tissues and srotamsi (channels); 

Sunthi: (Ayurvedic ginger) opens the channels without overheating them and with less risk of aggravating amavisha (reactive acidic toxins); 

Ajwain: Ajwain is another great channel opener that operates through its strong thermogenic property;

Clove: Opens the channels, helps burns ama without overheating them, and gives a pleasant, stimulating fragrance; 

Nirgundi: Reduces inflammation and inflammatory conditions in the channels that can result in blockages; 

Manjistha: Opening the channels can sometimes cause unwanted reactions by the immune system, Manjistha is the perfect plant to keep the immune response under control; 

Coriander: Helps bind and eliminate virulent toxins stuck in the channels (heavy metals, etc.) and supports the elimination of toxins through the urinary system; 

Pashanbhed: Growing on rocky soil, this remarkable plant is quite useful in cases where toxins are resistant to removal because they have hardened and crystallized; 

Mint: Opens the nadis (vibrational channels) and srotas (physical channels), this action helps with pranic reception in the channels and gently opens them without overheating; 

Camphor: Camphor (kapoor) both unblocks and helps to relax the physical and vibrational channels. 

Directions:

Warm the oil slightly in your sink by placing it in hot water (you may also use a massage oil warming device if you prefer). Once the oil is comfortably warm, apply a small amount in the palm of your hand and apply on your limbs and body and start massaging. Go in circular motion on the joint areas and lengthwise for the rest, on the limbs – for example going from shoulder to fingertips on your arms. Apply only gentle pressure on the stomach area and go only clockwise. After applying the oil on the whole body, allow yourself 10-15 minutes rest in a warm room – make sure there are no cold drafts – lie down, cover yourself with a towel, and close your eyes. You may also oil your hair (with a hair oil, don’t use body massage oils for the head) and cover your head while resting. You may want to wipe the oil off with paper towels before taking a bath or a shower. Repeat daily, at least on legs and arms, for optimal results. At least once a week full body massage is a must! Twice a week is better…Three times a week full body massage is ideal!

We are fortunate that Vaidya Mishra gave us so many balanced and powerful tea and spice blends. One of these is the Shroto Sudhi tea to help support our bodies during the Winter, as well as during the Spring seasonal transition. It can also be used at other times of the year depending on one’s needs, but it is a great and delicious cup of tea for this time of year in particular.

The shrotas, physical channels, in the body are given immense importance in Shakha Vansya Ayurveda. The Ayurvedic texts declare: “shroto mayo purusha” – the whole body is nothing but shrotas or physical circulatory channels. In this sense, only when these circulatory channels are open and “free-flowing” — you can think of them in terms of highways or roads – can there be health. These channels not only are the pathways through which nourishment is distributed and carried through the tissues, but they also are the pathways through which toxins are evacuated. Traffic goes both ways! And traffic needs to flow without blockages. 

The Shroto Shudhi tea (and masala or spice mix) that Vaidya made targets this aspect of our health. The tea and the spice mix complement each other in terms of their functions. The masala addresses the channels in the body that carry “earthy soma” (food materials. We use this spice mix along with some ghee or olive oil, and it targets channels that carry lipid soluble materials. 

The tea, on the other hand, targets channels in the body that carry “liquid soma” or water-soluble materials. 

Both the tea and the masala support overall metabolism but “cooking up ama” – partially digested food materials, without aggravating “amavisha” – reactive toxins. 

So what’s in the Shroto Shudhi tea?

And why? 

Black Pepper: Opens the micro and macro channels of the body and brain, enhances the oxygenation in the channels of the brain, supports the kidney channels.

Cinnamon: Encourages glucose and carbohydrate metabolism.

Kalonji: Balances the hormonal system, adds a unique flavor, and balances the subdosas of the colon and stomach.

Green Cardamom: Supports the metabolism of proteins, and balances the coordination of the three sub-doshas of the stomach; samana vata, kledaka kapha, and pachaka pitta.

Nutmeg: Establishes a deeper connection between the mind, stomach and colon, helps to retain the integrity of intelligence in the channels when they become open and receptive to becoming overwhelmed.

All-spice: Opens the channels without overwhelming them.

White Pepper: Adds a unique flavor, opens the micro and macro channels of the body and brain, enhances the oxygenation in the channels of the brain, supports the kidney channels.

Mace: Unique flavor, opens channels and calms the mind, enhances the connection between the mind and the digestive tract.

Clove: Opening the channels and cools the digestive system.

Of course, the secret lies in the ratio of these different spices – and Vaidya was a master formulator in that sense. Try it and see of for yourself. Make yourself a cup: boil ½ tsp of the tea mix in 8o water for 3-5 minutes, strain and sip slowly. Use mostly after lunch or dinner. 

Boil 1/2 tsp. of the tea for 3 minutes in 8 oz. water and sip slowly. Try to use after lunch and dinner.

Shroto-Shudhi Tea stimulates the whole body and opens the micro and macro channels.  It is great when you have a cold, are feeling sluggish, or anytime in winter, or when the body’s shrotas (physical channels) are closed. Enjoy a cup specially in this season – you will see what we meant!

Happy Spring Equinox!

What really happens on the day of the equinox and why does it matter?! The word “equinox” comes from the Latin “aequinoctium,” meaning “equal night,” derived from “aequus” (equal) and “nox” (night). On this day, day and night are of approximately equal length. Perhaps the vedic tradition can shed more light on this topic for us!

In the vedic tradition, daylight – and sunlight – correspond to “purusha” or masculine creative transformative energy; while nighttime is ruled by the moon, and the lunar energy is akin to feminine, nurturing, cooling and soothing energy. 

When both energies are in equal balance – it’s a reason to celebrate! That means their rule extends on our bodies in a balanced and harmonious way – neither one takes away from the other! 

This is, in many ways, also akin to what happens on Mahashivaratri night. That night celebrates the wedding of Shiva and Parvathi – the archetypes of the masculine and feminine cosmic creational energies – the lunar and the solar. In the vedic calendar, Mahashivarathri night comes on different distinct days each year, while the Spring equinox is fixed. The lunar calendar is mobile as the cycles of the moon alter; the solar calendar moves according to the sun. Lunar calendars base months on the Moon’s phases, while solar calendars align with the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, defining years based on the seasons. 

The Spring equinox correlates to the ancient vedic celebration of the wedding of the solar and the lunar – both day and night together on equal grounds. The Spring equinox is the one day when the solar masculine and the lunar feminine come together. From that one day’s union Spring unfolds marking the beginning of beautiful sunlit days punctuated with bird song and fragrant blossoms! Nature and life re-awaken from their winter slumber…

Happy Spring Equinox!

What really happens on the day of the equinox and why does it matter?! The word “equinox” comes from the Latin “aequinoctium,” meaning “equal night,” derived from “aequus” (equal) and “nox” (night). On this day, day and night are of approximately equal length. Perhaps the vedic tradition can shed more light on this topic for us!

In the vedic tradition, daylight – and sunlight – correspond to “purusha” or masculine creative transformative energy; while nighttime is ruled by the moon, and the lunar energy is akin to feminine, nurturing, cooling and soothing energy. 

When both energies are in equal balance – it’s a reason to celebrate! That means their rule extends on our bodies in a balanced and harmonious way – neither one takes away from the other! 

This is, in many ways, also akin to what happens on Mahashivaratri night. That night celebrates the wedding of Shiva and Parvathi – the archetypes of the masculine and feminine cosmic creational energies – the lunar and the solar. In the vedic calendar, Mahashivarathri night comes on different distinct days each year, while the Spring equinox is fixed. The lunar calendar is mobile as the cycles of the moon alter; the solar calendar moves according to the sun. Lunar calendars base months on the Moon’s phases, while solar calendars align with the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, defining years based on the seasons. 

The Spring equinox correlates to the ancient vedic celebration of the wedding of the solar and the lunar – both day and night together on equal grounds. The Spring equinox is the one day when the solar masculine and the lunar feminine come together. From that one day’s union Spring unfolds marking the beginning of beautiful sunlit days punctuated with bird song and fragrant blossoms! Nature and life re-awaken from their winter slumber…

A woman’s body is constantly evolving and progressing through distinct biological phases. These changes impact not only her reproductive capacity and identity, but also her personality – altered mental and emotional states, in addition to fluctuating physical stamina. By no means are these transitions meant to lessen or impair a woman’s professional and physical capacities in any way! Instead, they are just another phase of her creative experience in life – as a woman. 

In this sense, perimenopause is a great time of change when a woman’s body transitions to mark the end of biological reproductive years to allow her to expand her creative horizons in alternative ways. 

However, perimenopause can be a critical time that can impact her health for the remaining years of her life, if/when it is not well addressed. What happens during perimenopause? In a nutshell: the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, leading to fluctuating hormone levels. This may result in:

  • Irregular periods: Periods may become heavier, lighter, or more or less frequent;
  • Hot flashes: Sudden feelings of intense heat, often accompanied by sweating; 
  • Night sweats: Sweating during sleep, often related to hot flashes;
  • Mood changes: Irritability, anxiety, or depression; 
  • Sleep problems: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; 
  • Vaginal dryness: Reduced lubrication, which can cause discomfort during intercourse; 
  • Fatigue: Feeling tired or lacking energy; 
  • Weight gain: Changes in metabolism can lead to weight gain;
  • Other symptoms: Joint pain, headaches, and changes in libido.

While there are volumes in Ayurveda that detail treatment options for perimenopausal women, which include: lifestyle changes such as regular exercise; a healthy diet; etc, to manage specific symptoms; there are also many herbal preparations that Ayurveda offers to help alleviate symptoms and smoothen the transition. In contrast, modern medicine offers HRT – hormone replacement therapy to help address hormonal fluctuations and changes.  Last week we featured a full article detailing ayurvedic tips and remedies that help synchronize women’s bodies withe lunar cycles – amongst other things – for optimal hormonal balance. This week, we would like to share a wondrous herbal blend that Vaidya Mishra formulated. It comes in different formats: as a lotion or a nectar drop. They both carry the same herbs in a different base to address preference and optimal delivery methods based on need. 

This SVA formulation is called “Kamini.” Kamini is a Pro-estrogenic formulations that supports a woman’s transition and helps balance her estrogen levels.

Birth Control Pills

Clinical experience counts for something. When you see over 100,000 patients over a 35-year span of a lifetime, many patterns start to emerge where you can see lots of causes and effects, even before research bares them out.

For example, it became apparent to me early on in my practice that people who cooked with vegetable oils like canola, sunflower oil and others usually developed a fatty liver, even without the use of alcohol. I never saw any research on this, but I saw it over and over in my patients, and when I told them to eliminate the use of these oils and switch over to olive oil and ghee and gave them various herbs to heal their liver, the fatty liver totally reversed.

I saw hundreds and hundreds of children develop food allergies and sensitivities from taking way too many antibiotics for recurring infections, and thankfully watched the allergies go away once we restored the friendly bacteria in the gut and settled down the hot and angry liver. 

I also noticed how my patients who had thyroid problems at the same time had problems with their gall bladder, which I described in great detail in my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda.

When you have a very sick patient staring at you on the treatment table, desperate for help, you don’t have the luxury of waiting for research to discover what you have been seeing clinically for years. You just role up your sleeves and do what you instinctively know what you have to do, based on the experience you’ve gained from the hundreds of patients who presented before them with the same symptoms.

I remember many years ago I began seeing problems emerge in our menopausal patients who were taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It seemed that many of them were developing breast cancer. It was a very obvious cause and effect that I saw over and over and over again.

I started telling women to avoid it and showed them how nature gave us a bounty of herbs that could help them overcome their menopausal symptoms, without the side effects of the synthetic drugs.

Then, the Women’s Health Initiative study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute found out what I had been seeing clinically: they tested 161,000 women over a span of several years and discovered that indeed taking HRT did in fact increase the risk for not only breast cancer, but also for heart disease, stroke, blood clots and urinary incontinence. Not by a little, but a lot. So much so that they had to stop the study in its tracks because the women who were in the group who were taking the HRT were dropping like flies, developing high rates of all these problems.

Thankfully, an alarm was sent out and at least 50% of the women in the country stopped taking their HRT. And as predicted, the next year the rate of breast cancer dropped dramatically, lower than it had ever dropped before, despite all the breast cancer research which had been done hoping to find a way to decrease the epidemic.

I remember at the time thinking that if we could only take it one step further — if they could somehow get the young girls off the birth control pill, we would see the rate of breast cancer go down even more dramatically.

And again, I have come to this conclusion by seeing so many patients through the years who have developed breast cancer have one thing in common: a large majority of them have a history of taking birth control pills. The longer they have remained on them the more likely they are to develop it.This includes the patches, the vaginal rings and IUD’s all laced with these chemical hormones.

Let’s see why taking synthetic hormones might not be the way to go.

 First of all, the hormones that your body makes are highly intelligent. They are produced by the ovaries, and are targeted to certain areas to exert their influence. They are then removed from the body and then new hormones are made. All this happens through intelligent feedback loops originating in the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. They sense when the hormones are low, signals are sent out to the ovaries to produce them, and they fluctuate up and down during a woman’s monthly cycle depending on this feedback loop.

All of these functions can be altered immensely by synthetic hormones with grave consequences to your health. Why? Because these are not natural hormones but instead the toxic synthetic versions of the hormones your body would produce. And your body has never seen anything like these at any time in the history of mankind. 

While yes, they might be able to do a few of the same things that hormones do, attaching to your body’s receptors like your natural hormones do, kind of like a key fitting into a lock. But they won’t necessarily open the door all the way. You will definitely get a different outcome from these drugs than the intelligent hormones your body produces.

In Ayurveda we stress the importance of taking in truly natural remedies to heal the body. Remedies such as food, herbs, and spices — all are grown outside, absorbing the intelligent rays of the sun and the moon, which we collectively call prana. It’s this vibration of prana that gets into these remedies which in turn impart an intelligent vibration and action in our cells, allowing the cells to perform all their hundreds of complex functions, and also giving the cells the capability of communicating with each other. Every action inside of your cells runs on vibration. Intelligent vibration, the healing vibration of nature.

This is why we try to avoid synthetic vitamins as much as we can. They too are lacking nature’s healing energy, so when we take them into our bodies, yes, we will get an effect, but over time we will start to see side effects develop as their unintelligent or dumb effects begin to surface.

Which is exactly what is wrong with these synthetic hormones, such as birth control pills. Not only are they not intelligent, but they also break a very important law of nature in that they stop the body’s natural processes. This also is a very bad idea. 

For example, they stop the inherent and necessary rhythms of a woman’s hormonal cycle, making her infertile by preventing the release of an egg during the monthly cycle. They do this by suppressing the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. FSH and LH stimulate ovulation, which is the release of a mature egg from the female ovary. A woman cannot get pregnant if she doesn’t ovulate because there is no egg to be fertilized. I cringe when I think about someone stopping this basic law of nature inherent in all women and the havoc it must be wreaking on the delicately balanced endocrine system. The pill also thickens the mucus of the cervix. This thicker cervical mucus blocks sperm so they can’t swim to an egg. Yet another cringe-worthy thought.

I always tell my patients — don’t stop any of the body’s natural cycles so your body can run smoothly and intelligently, with all the hundreds of functions happily taking place within the trillions of cells in your body. It’s almost like you get a slap from Mother Nature when you break these basic laws of nature. This is because every cell is physically and energetically connected to each other. So a breakdown in communication in one area usually will initiate a cascade of events which will eventually affect the entire body. We can’t expect to harm one area and think things will be OK everywhere else.

This is especially true with synthetic hormone use. You don’t want to remove the elegant hormones your body produces and replace them with chemical toxins — if you do then you must accept the reality of what might happen inside. 

They have been known to cause life threatening blood clots, strokes, depression and suicidal thoughts; some women develop high blood pressure, some develop osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hardening of the arteries, heart disease, diabetes and insulin resistance, kidney disease and even dementia.

I make it a point to ask every new patient if they have ever taken birth control pills, or worse, the morning after pill which is even higher doses than the pill and wreaks even more havoc. And if they have taken the birth control pill I ask for how long and how many morning after pills were taken. That way, I know the amount of toxicity I’m dealing with.

Always keep this in mind: estrogen makes things grow. The intelligent estrogen your body produces made your hips and breasts grow at puberty, for example. The unintelligent or dumb estrogen found in HRT and birth control pills creates “dumb” growth — growths such as cancerous breast tumors.

Another pattern I have seen through the years is that the birth control pill destroys the friendly bacteria in the gut, just like antibiotics do. Once these are destroyed you can develop food allergies, yeast infections, irritable bowel and autoimmune diseases. It’s important to understand that the friendly bacteria in the gut prevent infection, they also help the digestion of food and they keep the immune system stable so it doesn’t spiral out of control and start reacting to foods or attacking your body which will wind up in an autoimmune disease as your immune system starts attacking you.

And birth control pills also wipe out the strains of the friendly bacteria in the bladder and vaginal tract, causing recurring bladder infections and/or bacterial vaginosis. These infections don’t occur out of the blue — they happen once the friendly bacteria are depleted. Since these beneficial bacteria prevent infections from growing once they are depleted you become prone to any one of these types of infections.

Hormonal Balance For Him TOO!

If you have been on the pill for any length of time you must regrow the friendly bacteria in the gut, the vaginal tract and the bladder using targeted types of probiotics for each specific area. You then have to undergo an intense regimen of cleansing. Cleansing the liver, the fat cells, the bone marrow, and the blood, all the places where these fatty hormones deposit and stay forever. 

Since these hormones are made out of cholesterol, there is a very good chance you need to thin out the bile in the gall bladder, as the gall bladder has to process these fatty hormones out and continually dumping this much fat and cholesterol into your bile can overwhelm it, causing a condition known as bile sludge. Normally the bile is thin and flows like a liquid. But when too much fat is introduced into it, it becomes thick, like a toothpaste. You need to thin out the bile using various herbs, foods and teas before it becomes too thick and begins congealing into gall stones. This is why so many women on the pill develop gall bladder disease. Nip it in the bud before it’s too late. Thin out the sludge before stones begin to form, and get off the pill as quickly as you can.

And finally, another pattern you’ll see develop is that many women who have been on the birth control pill will develop problems with their thyroid gland. This can happen for several reasons. First, the birth control pill depletes both selenium and zinc, two nutrients that your thyroid needs to both make the hormones and convert them to their active form. 

The pill also depletes the B vitamins. I remember very early on in my practice taking the pulse of women who were on the pill — I felt so sorry for them because I could feel their hand trembling and shaking as I took their pulse, a result of low B vitamins. And without B vitamins you cannot synthesize thyroid hormones. 

And another huge reason the birth control pill upsets the thyroid function is because it increases thyroid binding globulin or TBG. TBG, as it name implies, binds the thyroid hormone, making it unavailable to your cells, which isn’t a great thing since your thyroid hormones affect every single cell in your body. 

Here’s the way it works: you make the thyroid hormone, but it just circulates around in your body, kind of like it’s sitting in a taxicab just cruising around your body until it’s needed. The taxicab is the thyroid binding globulin. When the body sends signals that it needs more thyroid hormone, the thyroid hormone has to get out of the taxicab and go into the cells where it’s needed. This means it has to become unbound to the TBG so it is free to go into the cell. When there’s too much TBG it’s kind of like the thyroid hormone can’t get out of the cab, causing your body to suffer from lack of thyroid hormone.

Don’t pollute your body like this for just a few days out of the month that you are fertile. Use barrier methods of contraception such as condoms (both internal and external), diaphragms, cervical caps, and sponges. Or you can learn when you are ovulating and refrain from sexual activity a few days before and a few days after ovulation, since the sperm can live a few days.

Many women are put on the birth control pill not to prevent a pregnancy but to treat acne or irregular menstrual cycles. Let me warn you about this as well. The only reason the birth control pill helps acne is because it stops the natural detox process of the skin. This is also not a very good idea. Your skin is the largest organ in the body whose primary function is to let toxins out through the pores all day every day. If you block this very important detox process the toxins turn around and go deeper into the physiology, causing worse problems in the future.

And if your menstrual cycles are irregular, if you skip them or they come too frequently, then you should fix all the reasons that this is happening. Just taking the birth control pill gives you a false sense of security because now your period is coming on time every month. But the real truth is that none of the underlying causes for the irregular cycles were addressed. The only reason you appear to be having a regular cycle is because you get breakthrough bleeding every month when you stop the pill for that week. If you don’t address all the underlying reasons for the irregular cycles then these imbalances continue to fester within the body causing a bigger problem in the future, especially when you decide to start a family of your own.

So, I hope you will think twice before you decide to go on the birth control pill. Yes, it may be easy to just pop a pill each day to prevent a pregnancy, but the amount of toxicity it creates and the health problems associated with it aren’t worth it. And if you are using it to prevent acne or balance out your irregular cycle keep in mind that they are actually doing nothing to fix the underlying imbalances — all you’re doing is sweeping the problem under the rug, creating much bigger health problems in the not too distant future.

I hope this information keeps you away from the pill. I’ve seen way too many victims of the birth control pill through the years. Please. Your health is the most important thing in your life. Don’t throw it away so easily…

A woman’s body is constantly evolving and progressing through distinct biological phases. These changes impact not only her reproductive capacity and identity, but also her personality – altered mental and emotional states, in addition to fluctuating physical stamina. By no means are these transitions meant to lessen or impair a woman’s professional and physical capacities in any way! Instead, they are just another phase of her creative experience in life – as a woman. 

In this sense, perimenopause is a great time of change when a woman’s body transitions to mark the end of biological reproductive years to allow her to expand her creative horizons in alternative ways. 

However, perimenopause can be a critical time that can impact her health for the remaining years of her life, if/when it is not well addressed. What happens during perimenopause? In a nutshell: the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, leading to fluctuating hormone levels. This may result in:

  • Irregular periods: Periods may become heavier, lighter, or more or less frequent;
  • Hot flashes: Sudden feelings of intense heat, often accompanied by sweating; 
  • Night sweats: Sweating during sleep, often related to hot flashes;
  • Mood changes: Irritability, anxiety, or depression; 
  • Sleep problems: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; 
  • Vaginal dryness: Reduced lubrication, which can cause discomfort during intercourse; 
  • Fatigue: Feeling tired or lacking energy; 
  • Weight gain: Changes in metabolism can lead to weight gain;
  • Other symptoms: Joint pain, headaches, and changes in libido.

While there are volumes in Ayurveda that detail treatment options for perimenopausal women, which include: lifestyle changes such as regular exercise; a healthy diet; etc, to manage specific symptoms; there are also many herbal preparations that Ayurveda offers to help alleviate symptoms and smoothen the transition. In contrast, modern medicine offers HRT – hormone replacement therapy to help address hormonal fluctuations and changes.  Last week we featured a full article detailing ayurvedic tips and remedies that help synchronize women’s bodies withe lunar cycles – amongst other things – for optimal hormonal balance. This week, we would like to share a wondrous herbal blend that Vaidya Mishra formulated. It comes in different formats: as a lotion or a nectar drop. They both carry the same herbs in a different base to address preference and optimal delivery methods based on need.

Birth Control Pills

Clinical experience counts for something. When you see over 100,000 patients over a 35-year span of a lifetime, many patterns start to emerge where you can see lots of causes and effects, even before research bares them out.

For example, it became apparent to me early on in my practice that people who cooked with vegetable oils like canola, sunflower oil and others usually developed a fatty liver, even without the use of alcohol. I never saw any research on this, but I saw it over and over in my patients, and when I told them to eliminate the use of these oils and switch over to olive oil and ghee and gave them various herbs to heal their liver, the fatty liver totally reversed.

I saw hundreds and hundreds of children develop food allergies and sensitivities from taking way too many antibiotics for recurring infections, and thankfully watched the allergies go away once we restored the friendly bacteria in the gut and settled down the hot and angry liver. 

I also noticed how my patients who had thyroid problems at the same time had problems with their gall bladder, which I described in great detail in my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda.

When you have a very sick patient staring at you on the treatment table, desperate for help, you don’t have the luxury of waiting for research to discover what you have been seeing clinically for years. You just role up your sleeves and do what you instinctively know what you have to do, based on the experience you’ve gained from the hundreds of patients who presented before them with the same symptoms.

I remember many years ago I began seeing problems emerge in our menopausal patients who were taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It seemed that many of them were developing breast cancer. It was a very obvious cause and effect that I saw over and over and over again.

I started telling women to avoid it and showed them how nature gave us a bounty of herbs that could help them overcome their menopausal symptoms, without the side effects of the synthetic drugs.

Then, the Women’s Health Initiative study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute found out what I had been seeing clinically: they tested 161,000 women over a span of several years and discovered that indeed taking HRT did in fact increase the risk for not only breast cancer, but also for heart disease, stroke, blood clots and urinary incontinence. Not by a little, but a lot. So much so that they had to stop the study in its tracks because the women who were in the group who were taking the HRT were dropping like flies, developing high rates of all these problems.

Thankfully, an alarm was sent out and at least 50% of the women in the country stopped taking their HRT. And as predicted, the next year the rate of breast cancer dropped dramatically, lower than it had ever dropped before, despite all the breast cancer research which had been done hoping to find a way to decrease the epidemic.

I remember at the time thinking that if we could only take it one step further — if they could somehow get the young girls off the birth control pill, we would see the rate of breast cancer go down even more dramatically.

And again, I have come to this conclusion by seeing so many patients through the years who have developed breast cancer have one thing in common: a large majority of them have a history of taking birth control pills. The longer they have remained on them the more likely they are to develop it.This includes the patches, the vaginal rings and IUD’s all laced with these chemical hormones.

Let’s see why taking synthetic hormones might not be the way to go.

 First of all, the hormones that your body makes are highly intelligent. They are produced by the ovaries, and are targeted to certain areas to exert their influence. They are then removed from the body and then new hormones are made. All this happens through intelligent feedback loops originating in the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. They sense when the hormones are low, signals are sent out to the ovaries to produce them, and they fluctuate up and down during a woman’s monthly cycle depending on this feedback loop.

All of these functions can be altered immensely by synthetic hormones with grave consequences to your health. Why? Because these are not natural hormones but instead the toxic synthetic versions of the hormones your body would produce. And your body has never seen anything like these at any time in the history of mankind. 

While yes, they might be able to do a few of the same things that hormones do, attaching to your body’s receptors like your natural hormones do, kind of like a key fitting into a lock. But they won’t necessarily open the door all the way. You will definitely get a different outcome from these drugs than the intelligent hormones your body produces.

In Ayurveda we stress the importance of taking in truly natural remedies to heal the body. Remedies such as food, herbs, and spices — all are grown outside, absorbing the intelligent rays of the sun and the moon, which we collectively call prana. It’s this vibration of prana that gets into these remedies which in turn impart an intelligent vibration and action in our cells, allowing the cells to perform all their hundreds of complex functions, and also giving the cells the capability of communicating with each other. Every action inside of your cells runs on vibration. Intelligent vibration, the healing vibration of nature.

This is why we try to avoid synthetic vitamins as much as we can. They too are lacking nature’s healing energy, so when we take them into our bodies, yes, we will get an effect, but over time we will start to see side effects develop as their unintelligent or dumb effects begin to surface.

Which is exactly what is wrong with these synthetic hormones, such as birth control pills. Not only are they not intelligent, but they also break a very important law of nature in that they stop the body’s natural processes. This also is a very bad idea. 

For example, they stop the inherent and necessary rhythms of a woman’s hormonal cycle, making her infertile by preventing the release of an egg during the monthly cycle. They do this by suppressing the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. FSH and LH stimulate ovulation, which is the release of a mature egg from the female ovary. A woman cannot get pregnant if she doesn’t ovulate because there is no egg to be fertilized. I cringe when I think about someone stopping this basic law of nature inherent in all women and the havoc it must be wreaking on the delicately balanced endocrine system. The pill also thickens the mucus of the cervix. This thicker cervical mucus blocks sperm so they can’t swim to an egg. Yet another cringe-worthy thought.

I always tell my patients — don’t stop any of the body’s natural cycles so your body can run smoothly and intelligently, with all the hundreds of functions happily taking place within the trillions of cells in your body. It’s almost like you get a slap from Mother Nature when you break these basic laws of nature. This is because every cell is physically and energetically connected to each other. So a breakdown in communication in one area usually will initiate a cascade of events which will eventually affect the entire body. We can’t expect to harm one area and think things will be OK everywhere else.

This is especially true with synthetic hormone use. You don’t want to remove the elegant hormones your body produces and replace them with chemical toxins — if you do then you must accept the reality of what might happen inside. 

They have been known to cause life threatening blood clots, strokes, depression and suicidal thoughts; some women develop high blood pressure, some develop osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hardening of the arteries, heart disease, diabetes and insulin resistance, kidney disease and even dementia.

I make it a point to ask every new patient if they have ever taken birth control pills, or worse, the morning after pill which is even higher doses than the pill and wreaks even more havoc. And if they have taken the birth control pill I ask for how long and how many morning after pills were taken. That way, I know the amount of toxicity I’m dealing with.

Always keep this in mind: estrogen makes things grow. The intelligent estrogen your body produces made your hips and breasts grow at puberty, for example. The unintelligent or dumb estrogen found in HRT and birth control pills creates “dumb” growth — growths such as cancerous breast tumors.

Another pattern I have seen through the years is that the birth control pill destroys the friendly bacteria in the gut, just like antibiotics do. Once these are destroyed you can develop food allergies, yeast infections, irritable bowel and autoimmune diseases. It’s important to understand that the friendly bacteria in the gut prevent infection, they also help the digestion of food and they keep the immune system stable so it doesn’t spiral out of control and start reacting to foods or attacking your body which will wind up in an autoimmune disease as your immune system starts attacking you.

And birth control pills also wipe out the strains of the friendly bacteria in the bladder and vaginal tract, causing recurring bladder infections and/or bacterial vaginosis. These infections don’t occur out of the blue — they happen once the friendly bacteria are depleted. Since these beneficial bacteria prevent infections from growing once they are depleted you become prone to any one of these types of infections.

Hormonal Balance For Him TOO!

If you have been on the pill for any length of time you must regrow the friendly bacteria in the gut, the vaginal tract and the bladder using targeted types of probiotics for each specific area. You then have to undergo an intense regimen of cleansing. Cleansing the liver, the fat cells, the bone marrow, and the blood, all the places where these fatty hormones deposit and stay forever. 

Since these hormones are made out of cholesterol, there is a very good chance you need to thin out the bile in the gall bladder, as the gall bladder has to process these fatty hormones out and continually dumping this much fat and cholesterol into your bile can overwhelm it, causing a condition known as bile sludge. Normally the bile is thin and flows like a liquid. But when too much fat is introduced into it, it becomes thick, like a toothpaste. You need to thin out the bile using various herbs, foods and teas before it becomes too thick and begins congealing into gall stones. This is why so many women on the pill develop gall bladder disease. Nip it in the bud before it’s too late. Thin out the sludge before stones begin to form, and get off the pill as quickly as you can.

And finally, another pattern you’ll see develop is that many women who have been on the birth control pill will develop problems with their thyroid gland. This can happen for several reasons. First, the birth control pill depletes both selenium and zinc, two nutrients that your thyroid needs to both make the hormones and convert them to their active form. 

The pill also depletes the B vitamins. I remember very early on in my practice taking the pulse of women who were on the pill — I felt so sorry for them because I could feel their hand trembling and shaking as I took their pulse, a result of low B vitamins. And without B vitamins you cannot synthesize thyroid hormones. 

And another huge reason the birth control pill upsets the thyroid function is because it increases thyroid binding globulin or TBG. TBG, as it name implies, binds the thyroid hormone, making it unavailable to your cells, which isn’t a great thing since your thyroid hormones affect every single cell in your body. 

Here’s the way it works: you make the thyroid hormone, but it just circulates around in your body, kind of like it’s sitting in a taxicab just cruising around your body until it’s needed. The taxicab is the thyroid binding globulin. When the body sends signals that it needs more thyroid hormone, the thyroid hormone has to get out of the taxicab and go into the cells where it’s needed. This means it has to become unbound to the TBG so it is free to go into the cell. When there’s too much TBG it’s kind of like the thyroid hormone can’t get out of the cab, causing your body to suffer from lack of thyroid hormone.

Don’t pollute your body like this for just a few days out of the month that you are fertile. Use barrier methods of contraception such as condoms (both internal and external), diaphragms, cervical caps, and sponges. Or you can learn when you are ovulating and refrain from sexual activity a few days before and a few days after ovulation, since the sperm can live a few days.

Many women are put on the birth control pill not to prevent a pregnancy but to treat acne or irregular menstrual cycles. Let me warn you about this as well. The only reason the birth control pill helps acne is because it stops the natural detox process of the skin. This is also not a very good idea. Your skin is the largest organ in the body whose primary function is to let toxins out through the pores all day every day. If you block this very important detox process the toxins turn around and go deeper into the physiology, causing worse problems in the future.

And if your menstrual cycles are irregular, if you skip them or they come too frequently, then you should fix all the reasons that this is happening. Just taking the birth control pill gives you a false sense of security because now your period is coming on time every month. But the real truth is that none of the underlying causes for the irregular cycles were addressed. The only reason you appear to be having a regular cycle is because you get breakthrough bleeding every month when you stop the pill for that week. If you don’t address all the underlying reasons for the irregular cycles then these imbalances continue to fester within the body causing a bigger problem in the future, especially when you decide to start a family of your own.

So, I hope you will think twice before you decide to go on the birth control pill. Yes, it may be easy to just pop a pill each day to prevent a pregnancy, but the amount of toxicity it creates and the health problems associated with it aren’t worth it. And if you are using it to prevent acne or balance out your irregular cycle keep in mind that they are actually doing nothing to fix the underlying imbalances — all you’re doing is sweeping the problem under the rug, creating much bigger health problems in the not too distant future.

I hope this information keeps you away from the pill. I’ve seen way too many victims of the birth control pill through the years. Please. Your health is the most important thing in your life. Don’t throw it away so easily…

5 Practical Tips for

Maintaining Hormonal Balance

Many define Ojas in different ways. Vaidya Mishra had a different additional take – as always! He explained that Ojas is the connective factor between the cosmic energy and the biological reality of your body! Is that just a poetic statement? Absolutely not! In the SVA tradition, hormones are considered to be ojas. The connection that Ojas establishes between our bodies and the universe goes through the route of hormones. Vaidya explained that hormones are the “messengers” communicating between the macro- and micro- cosms: the material universe we live in, as embodied souls. There is so much more that we can say on this topic, based on Vaidya Mishra’s teachings; however, today, we want to focus on what happens when things go wrong and our hormonal balance goes off. Because seriously bad stuff can and does happen when our hormonal balance is off… Hormonal balance going off means that relationship between our bodies and the environment is exacerbated.What throws off that balance? It can be a myriad of factors, such as: chronic stress; bad diet; overuse of our senses; mental traumas; physical injuries; etc. But amongst these, by far, chronic stress is the worst. Why? Because we tend to ignore it and keep going despite feeling extremely stressed… 

But what happens when we are chronically stressed? When we are stressed, our body releases hormones: adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones trigger a series of physiological and psychological responses, known as the “fight or flight” response. The more stressed we are, the higher our cortisol levels become, creating a hormonal imbalance. Then what happens? High cortisol levels can cause a number of physical and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms can be any of the following: weight gain, especially around the belly and face; fatty deposits between the shoulders; stretch marks on the belly; muscle weakness in the upper arms and thighs; high blood pressure; high blood sugar; thin, fragile skin that bruises easily; acne; female facial hair and irregular menstrual periods including educed fertility.

Emotional symptoms may include anxiety or depression; headaches; irritability; poor sleep; and difficulty concentrating. Other symptoms may also include: intestinal problems, such as: constipation, bloating, or diarrhea; difficulty recovering from exercise; muscle pain or tension in the head, neck, jaw, or back; insomnia; pre-diabetes.

In addition, Cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands. When it’s elevated when you’re stressed or anxious it can disrupt calcium absorption, which can lead to bone loss and fractures. Ok we get the picture! 

So: how can Ayurveda help us address stress? You can manage cortisol by incorporating Ashwagandha, a famous adaptogenic ayurvedic herb. You can use either tablets or transdermal cream (see www.chandika.com) But if your stress goes unchecked, if you lead a stressed lifestyle, imbalanced levels of cortisol will result in imbalanced levels of estrogen and progesterone that in their turn have additional associated imbalances and ailments.

S0 n0w y0u know: Stress is a BIG disruptor of our hormonal health. Here are 5 factors in total that you can identify in your life, along with practical tips, to help you correct hormonal imbalance.

Number 1: Hormonal balance is supported by lunar energy and somehow not everybody knows this! We have forgotten our connection to Nature, specially in the case of women, the connection between hormones and the lunar cycles. Women’s menstrual cycles occur on or near the full moon or on the no-moon day. This is why they are also called lunar cycles. In SVA terms, the vibrational energy of the moon has much to do with the menstrual cycle. The moon’s soma energy is received and delivered in a woman’s physiology through her vibrational channels. For this to occur in a timely manner on a monthly basis, the vibrational channels need to be ready to receive and then clean and unblocked to be able to circulate and deliver the somagenic cosmic energy.

Practical Tips: in order to get the most out of a lunar cycle on a monthly basis, you need to maintain your vibrational channels in good health. For this, Vaidya Mishra recommends doing an abhyanga massage (self- massage with warm oil) with Vata Massage oil with Vitamin D and Magnesium (available at www.chandika.com). Do a self-massage at least once a week. In addition, keep your physical and vibrational channels open and healthy by using Prana-Flow Roll-on on hands and feet, as well as lower back.

Diet-wise: the balanced use of lunar energy to support hormonal balance will result in optimal health. Unless you have an imbalanced hormonal panel – too much or too little estrogen etc, in which case you need to consult with your physician – you can do the following: 5 days before and 5 days after the full moon, support the lunar cycle by consuming estrogen-predominant foods such as: asparagus, fennel, papaya, pineapple, yam.

You can also incorporate the use of SVA Kamini cream. In addition, Shatavari, Zinc (Yasad), or Fennel Herbal Memory drops. You can also add Fennel Transdermal cream on your lower back.

Make and drink the Pineapple and Fennel smoothy recipe: fresh (preferably organic) peeled and cubed or sliced pineapple approximately 6-7 slices, add 1 tablespoon dry toasted and powdered fennel seeds. Blend the mixture by adding some water to taste. If the pineapple is not sweet enough, you can add 1 tsp raw cane sugar or some raw honey. You may filter out the fibers if you like, otherwise just enjoy!

The rest of the month (5 days after the full moon and up to 5 days before the next full moon), use Femi Ojas drops and Femi Ojas cream – these are progesterone predominant.

These creams enhance the absorption of lunar energy and transforming into specific hormones as and when what hormones are needed for the body.

Number 2: yes, so we know that there is confirmed relationship between women’s monthly hormonal flow and the lunar cycle, but, in order to transform the cool soma of the moon into hormones, or components of the menstrual cycle, the power of transformation, in other words, agni, is needed. Our main source of agni is the sun, or solar energy. Agni is most prominent in our physiology through digestion, and overall metabolism. So in order to balance your hormones, it is imperative that you take care of your digestion and overall metabolism. The body should be fed somagenic intelligent foods – not acidic foods – in a timely manner; otherwise, here are some additional practical tips:

Practical Tips: make sure that you tend to your digestion during the whole month. This translates into:

  • Don’t overeat. Eat more frequent but smaller meals;
  • Eat easy to digest foods – favor fresh over processed and left-overs.
  • Eat on time – this will further align you with the universal clock, making sure all your physiological functions are running optimally on-time.
  • Do NOT fast in the mornings: if you must fast (!), do it in the evenings. Have a light but nourishing breakfast, a proper full balanced lunch, a fruit/nuts snack around 3 pm, and a light soupy/boiled veggies and protein early dinner (no later than 6pm) and fast for the rest of the evening. 

Eating heavy processed meals in a delayed manner is the sure recipe for creating toxins or ama – as the body is not able to fully digest and metabolize when the sun goes down. You need to process the soma of the food to convert it into hormones. If semi-digested material results from your meals, then it clogs your physical channels. When this happens, regardless of how young or old you are, whether you are pre-menopausal, or actually in menopause, or not at all close to menopause, your cycle will be disturbed, may be delayed, and/or accompanied by excessive symptoms of imbalance – headaches, heavy mood swings, cramping, sweating and chills, etc. You can also enhance your overall metabolism by using Mom’s Masala in your cooking. Use Soma Salt to enhance digestion and absorption without imbalancing any of the doshas.

Number 3: Follow an alkaline diet, and ideally, follow the SVA somagenic diet, that recommends staying away from any food items that have or can lower your body’s overall alkalinity or pH. Eating fresh intelligent pranic food will ensure that the body’s innate system of balance, which keeps a check on how much soma needs to be transformed by how much agni, and how much lubrication is needed for the channels, this system does not get disrupted. Vaidya categorizes food into a) intelligent – fresh, devoid of preservatives or artificial agents, freshly prepared; b) dumb: food that has some amount of freshness but also contains some additives and is heavy on the digestion; c) dead: food that comes in pre-packed format and has years of shelf life and is filled with additives and preservatives. You can guess what your body and brain will feel like after consuming foods with either of the above characteristics.

Practical Tips: Make sure to carry healthy snacks with you wherever you go, to curb your temptation for unhealthy food choices; consume sweet juicy seasonal fruits whenever possible. Incorporate a balanced amount of preferably raw A2 milk into your diet. Definitely have yoghurt on a daily basis – specifically with lunch, as a medicinal food item. Incorporate some fresh coconut into your meals whenever possible – favor coconut flakes or chunks instead of just the oil – the fibre is part of the medicinal properties of coconut.

Number 4: to get the most benefit out of solar and lunar energies, following a routine is necessary. This will make sure your entire mind-body-heart complex is aligned with the circadian rhythm, and this is the key to total health. What does this translate into? During the daytime, be active with the sun. Eat on time, around noon, when solar energy and agni is highest in the environment. Sleep at night. And sleep on time – before 10pm or latest by 9:45pm – so that you can get most benefit from lunar energy. These are the laws of nature that will help keep our entire physiology functioning optimally.

Practical Tips: both solar and lunar energy govern our body’s hormonal system, so we need to develop and maintain a routine based on the circulation of solar and lunar energies. In the daytime solar energy flows, so we have to be more active during the day, not sleeping, eating heavier foods on time at midday so that we use the solar energy during the daytime. Night-time we need to rest in order to recover with the help of lunar energy. Routine plays a major role in the health of your hormones.

Number 5: “spiritual” practice – you have to have one! It does not have to be religious. Everything in this universe is sacred – we just need to adjust our perception lens… And remember: the entire energy of the universe is ready to flow into you, nourish, nurture, and rejuvenate you. You just need to invite and allow it! And the primary gateway for this cosmic power is the brahmarandhra or the thousand points’ filter that makes up the adipathi marma located on your fontanelle, the top front part of your head. Through this point, the energy enters and is delivered to all the organs and systems in your physiology. But stress acts as a barricade to this star-gate! It blocks the entrance. When you adopt and practice a daily spiritual practice that helps you be on top of stress, that helps you reconnect you with You, then your hormones will be healthy and flow better. You can google and find countless scientific studies that show how stress plays a major role in creating hormonal imbalance.

Practical Tips: Yoga, prayers, meditation, in other words: balance between rest and activity, is an essential component for hormonal balance and health. Adopt an anti-stress routine. Make sure you have some quiet time for yourself on a daily basis, to re-align yourself with the big picture of things. YOU DESERVE IT! Only when you are at your best, will you be able to not only accomplish your desires, but spread joy and beauty through who and where you are in this moment….

Rose Carol – MA, LPC, Certified SVAyurveda Educator, had the great fortune of studying not only Ayurveda but also the fundamentals of Sattva Vijaya with Vaidya Mishra one-on-one. She sat down with him during patient consultations and also attended many of his courses. Her primordial interest was to help people heal from trauma. A licensed graduate in Psychology, she combines her modern studies with the ancient vedic teachings that Vaidya Mishra made available to her.
