“Prana is Maharasayana”

Vaidya Mishra frequently reminded us: “ALL we really need is Prana to address ANY/ALL ailments!” Prana can help where the most sacred most divine herbs may fail – and without prana NOTHING can help. In the Shaka Vanshiya tradition of Ayurveda that is thousands of years old, we learn what Prana is, in its integrality, the most fundamental and constitutional building block of EVERYTHING under the sun – INCLUDING THE SUN! Prana, truly is ALL THERE IS! Without Prana there can be no life of any form or substance in the universe. Prana is the first most refined most subtle manifestation of the universe as it materializes. It is the best rasayana because it is the building block of the universe: it re-juvenates, re-stores life in every cell, tissue, organ, and organ-system in the body… No detox, no herbal protocol, no healing program, no-thing (!) AT ALL will help unless there is prana involved first and foremost… 

SO WHAT REALLY IS PRANA?

If you do an online search in Wikipedia, for example, here is what you will find: “In yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian martial arts, prana (प्राण, prāṇa; the Sanskrit word for breath, “life force“, or “vital principle”) permeates reality on all levels including inanimate objects. In Hindu literature, prāṇa is sometimes described as originating from the Sun and connecting the elements.” Ok: so prana permeates everything, it is a vital force, or breath. What else?

Or More:

V.S. Apte provides fourteen different meanings for the Sanskrit word prāṇa (प्राण) including breath or respiration; the breath of life, vital air, principle of life (usually plural in this sense, there being five such vital airs generally assumed, but three, six, seven, nine, and even ten are also spoken of); energy or vigour; the spirit or soul.” Ok things get a little more complicated now with so many “types of prana”… but what else?

“Of these meanings, the concept of “vital air” is used by Bhattacharyya to describe the concept as used in Sanskrit texts dealing with pranayama, the manipulation of the breath. Thomas McEvilley translates prāṇa as “spirit-energy”. The breath is understood to be its most subtle material form, but is also believed to be present in the blood, and most concentrated in semen and vaginal fluid.” SO WE STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT PRANA IS… And apparently scholars are very divided on the nitty-gritty of what prana really is besides the concept of breath… Conclusion: it is really hard to get a clear understanding of such a central concept without getting lost in intellectual quandaries….

But Vaidya Mishra gave us a very simple very encompassing and thorough understanding and explanation of prana. It is thorough because you understand how it works on ALL levels of life, it literally encompasses everything we are and do in a very practical manner. And he also taught us how to harness more prana so we can live life in more balance and bliss!

Vaidya Mishra also made some ayurvedic herbal remedies that help restore the flow of prana by addressing the shrotas (physical channels) and nadis (vibrational channels). Calms and Focuses the Mind 

Prana Vata is the subdosha of vata seated in the head which, in its balanced state, helps us to think clearly and use our sense organs properly. Vaidya Mishra says that one reason we call this subdosha prana vata is because most of the reception of universal prana happens in the head. In a real sense, prana vata is the master prana of the body. Thus, it’s imperative to keep prana vata steady and calm, yet alert and focused.

Elizabeth’s training as a pharmacist coupled with her ayurvedic expertise made for a super informative and insightful session on bone health. There is so much information out there about what to do, supplements, protocols, etc. It becomes very hard to distinguish between what works and what can even harm. Sometimes you just need to adjust your daily routine and dietary protocols do get better results. And some time-tested ayurvedic wisdom always comes in handy!

Your Body’s Dynamic Powerhouse 

Yakrit, the Sanskrit term for the ‘liver,’ literally means ‘where every process happens.’ The liver – the largest organ in our bodies – carries out hundreds of actions, primarily detoxifying and creating new blood; filtering out toxins/chemicals; building immunity. But did you know that it also has an amazing capacity to regenerate itself? Without the liver we wouldn’t be able to transform food into energy, by breaking down fats and proteins. Here are some of the liver’s most vital functions:

• Produces fresh blood AND cleans toxins out of the blood: the many cells of the liver, known as hepatocytes, accept and filter this blood. They act as little sorting centers, determining which nutrients should be processed, what should be stored, what should be eliminated via the stool, what should go back to the blood; it also gets rid of old red blood cells; the liver thus regulates/maintains healthy amount of blood in the body;
• Produces bile, a fluid that helps the body digest (break down) fat: the liver stores fat-soluble vitamins as well as minerals such as copper and iron, releasing them when the body needs them. It also helps to break down fats in a person’s diet: it either metabolizes fats or releases them as energy. The liver produces an estimated 800 to 1000 ml of bile each day. This bile flows into the small intestine where the fat gets broken down and absorbed – extra bile is stored in the gallbladder.

As if these functions weren’t enough, the liver also plays a major role in the following:

• Metabolizes proteins and carbohydrates so they turn into energy and your body can use them; 
• Creates immune system factors that help fight against infection;
• Create proteins responsible for blood clotting – otherwise we would bleed to death! 
• Breaks down old and damaged red blood cell; 
• Balances energy metabolism by converting glycogen to glucose and storing extra glucose by converting it to glycogen. Glycogen is a form of glucose that your body stores mainly in your liver and muscles. Your body needs carbohydrates from the food you eat to form glucose and glycogen.
• Makes toxins less harmful to the body and removes them/detoxifies the bloodstream

So you can see how and when, for any reason, the “intelligence” of the liver gets compromised, different kinds of dis-ease may emerge. A compromised liver can mean compromised health on many levels… 

In Shaka Vanshiya Ayurveda, we pay special attention to making sure the liver does not get “cranky” – as Vaidya Mishra would jokingly explain. Having taken the pulse of thousands of people who had “cranky hot livers,” he put together a gentle yet effective protocol to help cool things off and optimize its functions.
