Sri Devi Yantra

A yantra is a Vedic geometric design or mystical diagram inscribed on paper, etched in metal, or fashioned three dimensionally. Yantras are often associated with a particular deity (law of nature) and used to enhance meditation; protect from harmful influences; develop particular powers; attract wealth or success, etc.

The Shri Yantra is called the “mother of all yantras” because all other yantras derive from it geometrically. It represents the cosmos at the macrocosmic level and the human body at the microcosmic level. This yantra’s nine interlocking triangles centered around the bindu (central point) consists of five downward pointing triangles, representing Shakti (cosmic female principle) and four upright triangles, representing Shiva (cosmic male principle). The nine interlocking triangles form forty-three small triangles each housing a presiding divine energy associated with particular aspects of existence.

How to Curb Your Cravings! Plus: Shakti: the Divine Feminine – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Sept 18, 2025 – #35, Vol 14

The Sanskrit word, trupti – तृप्ति– means contentment, fulfillment. It is a state of blissful being in which we feel physically, emotionally, and mentally satiated, a state in which we experience no lack of anything. Experiencing trupti is the ideal we strive for, but as we all know, in life, stuff happens! Because we live in time… Time runs our bodies, minds, and hearts: we are – all -and everything is – always – in constant flux. And unless we can arrest this temporal flux, we have to adjust and address daily and seasonal imbalances that result from the flow of time…

In this sense, cravings are not inherently bad… In fact, as modern science acknowledges and Ayurveda teaches us, cravings may be a signal from our body, a “cry for help” – to address nutritional or psychological deficiencies.

By the end of Summer, after a few months of over-exposure to warmer temperatures and sunlight, our bodies are in high pitta dosha mode – an excess of heat and heat related imbalances that impact our mental and emotional state as well as our physical health. We may feel sad, sluggish, or even excessively stressed…

But more than anything we need to pay attention to digestion and address it first because it is the root cause. End of Summer, high pitta dosha impacts our metabolism, literally setting our cravings on fire! You may find yourself excessively craving cooling/cold/somagenic foods and drinks, and sugar! Lots and lots of it! And sugar is an important component for our metabolism… Vaidya Mishra used to say, “don’t eliminate sugar or the sweet taste from your diet; make sure you are choosing good healthy sugar instead of the highly processed type… Choose naturally occuring sugars in fruits, vegetables and dairy. Naturally occuring sugars also supply necessary additional nutrients and fiber….”

Our bodies are constantly 24/7 carrying out basic metabolic functions to keep things going. Essential processes like breathing, blood circulation, digestion, hormonal regulation, and body temperature control are ALL dependent on an optimal metabolic system. Our bodies cannot survive without proper food – unless one is an accomplished yogi or yogini! Nor can our bodies function optimally without the conversion of that food into usable energy as well as building-blocks for growth and repair. Glucose or sugar, plays a central role here, because our body breaks down food – carbohydrates, fats, and proteins – into smaller components like glucose, which is then used for energy in cellular processes.

When, for any reason – external or internal – metabolic digestive processes are disrupted then the result is a “metabolic disorder” – a situation where we have too much or not enough of necessary substances. For example: diabetes is a metabolic disorder that affects the body’s ability to properly use and store energy from food.

In short, the point is: sugar metabolism is one of the most crucial process we ALL need to pay attention to. Ayurveda offers us deep insights into how to address this. Simply put: when food is not properly metabolized – digested and absorbed – our bodies will send signals as cravings… So the first things is to make sure we are able to optimize digestion in order to control sugar cravings…

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum): opens the channels without heating;

Saffron (Crocus sativus): aromatic, warming, antioxidant;

Indian Kino (Pterocarpus marsupium): supports the pancreas;

Neem (Azadirachta indica): supports liver detox;

Harsingar flower (Nyctanthes arbortristis): supports the nerve endings;

DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice): Cools off excess pitta by balancing and neutralizing excess stomach acidity;

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum): cools off and flushes out accumulated toxins;

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): enhances and sharpens digestion;

Blue lotus root (Nymphaea caerulea): supports coordination between heart and mind.

Directions

Boil 1/2 tsp. of the tea blend for 3-5 minutes in 12 oz. Water. Filter and cool off. Sip slowly and enjoy! If you are craving sweets – have a cup! It will help curb the craving. If you already had lots of sweets, ice-cream, and carbs, have a cup to help digest and metabolize and take away the heavy feeling and guilt!

This tea is great to use regularly as a digestive after meals – lunch or dinner. You may also have a cup first thing in the morning if you are not feeling hungry and need to re-awaken or sharpen a sluggish appetite.

Towards the end of Summer, as the Autumn equinox nears, things shift in Nature impacting our bodies and minds… The autumnal equinox is literally an astronomical event where the sun appears to cross the celestial equator resulting in a nearly equal 12-hour day and 12-hour night across the globe. After this, the days get cooler and shorter as we get less and less sun.

In Ayurveda, this event is called “ritu-sandhi” – it’s the transition from one season to another. Ritusandhi calls for a shift in our diets, routine, and overall daily activities as our body and its metabolism is also impacted by the sun. Ignoring this shift can result not only in the seasonal cold, but also deeper physical and mental “imbalances” such as: elevated anxiety and/or irritability; disrupted sleep; imbalanced digestion; skin rashes; migraines; overall inflammation; digestive issues; etc.

According to Ayurveda, if the imbalances of pitta dosha are left unchecked, as the weather cools down and our physical channels shrink, heat may get trapped and all our symptoms may get aggravated and interfere with our daily activities.

Some key things that you can do is:

Diet: shift your food choices from cold, sugary, and raw to warm, cooked and liquid. No more ice-cream – no exceptions!
Taste: make sure you incorporate a good sour taste in your diet – favor lime over lemons – to help balance and re-ignite digestive fire or agni;
Support digestion by eating a piece of sweet pineapple or papaya after your meals: they contain digestive enzymes and will keep things moving;
Stay hydrated: use Vaidya Mishra’s rehydration drink recipe – you will love how delicious and satisfying it is!

New Findings on the Health Benefits of Plant-based Diets!

There’s a lot of talk about butyrate these days. Let’s see why that is and also let’s discuss some important things you need to know about this very important compound.

When we eat fiber, much of it is indigestible which means that it makes its way undigested through the small intestine and then into the large intestine. But in the large intestine or colon, we have friendly bacteria which eat these fibers and release what are called short chain fatty acids, or SCFA’s. There are several of these that get produced, like acetate, propionate and butyrate, and some others, but we especially focus on butyrate since it has some special capabilities above and beyond what the others can do. We ourselves can’t make these so we depend on our gut bacteria to make these for us.

BUT…we must eat fiber in order to make these! Our ancestors ate mostly plant fibers because they can’t run away from you, unlike animals, which they did eat, but it was only occasionally, since they are hard to catch. So the friendly bacteria in our gut evolved to eat these plant fibers — from fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

However, in modern cultures much of the diet now is lacking fiber, so what happens? The butyrate producing bugs starve to death.

So why do we need to be concerned about how much butyrate we make in our gut? What exactly does butyrate do for our health?

Well, for one thing, butyrate keeps the junctions tight in the gut lining. Why is this important you might ask? Because with stress, and antibiotic use, the junctions loosen, causing leaky gut, creating an intense immune response as infections start to grow and leak into the bloodstream along with dangerous toxins which were meant to go into the bowel movement. Both of these conditions create inflammation, leading to every disease you can think of.

And if that’s not enough, the butyrate helps the immune system determine whether it needs to launch an attack or not. Butyrate is one of those signals that our body has evolved which works by communicating constantly with our immune system. It’s called cross-talk and it is one of the compounds that can talk to the bacterial strains to determine is everything is ok, or if an immune response needs to be launched. In other words, it determines if there are enough good strains there and if not, is there a disaster in the making where the gut becomes overrun by pathogens that could cause infections which could kill you.

And it gets even better!

Inside our gut we have a thick barrier of mucus called the mucin layer which protects us from pathogens that would love to get through the gut lining and into the blood to infect us. There is a very specific species that lives inside the mucus called Akkermansia Muciniphila (this means mucin lover). These live in the mucus layer and they produce acetate, propionate and butyrate. So when you eat plant fibers which travel undigested all the way through the small intestine to the colon you will be feeding the butyrate producing bugs.

The butyrate bugs release the butyrate and the butyrate soaks from the lumen (the inner part of the intestines) into the mucus layer. But it can go even deeper…it can soak down even further and reach the blood where the white blood cells are. And the white blood cells have evolved receptor cell sites specifically for…butyrate!

This is astonishing because our body cannot create butyrate so why would our white blood cells have a receptor for something we don’t make? Because we co-evolved with these butyrate bugs. For thousands and thousands of years people have been eating plant foods so we’ve had this constant supply of butyrate which allowed our immune system to evolve to the point where the white blood cells have these receptors specifically for butyrate.

Now here is a very important point: pathogens do not make butyrate so this means that if there’s plenty of butyrate present soaking down into the blood then this tells your body that everything is going OK — there’s no pathogens and all the good guys are in place which release butyrate.

But what would happen if the butyrate levels were to drop down to the point where they’re not saturating the blood.? They’re not then telling the immune system that everything is going OK. This triggers the immune system because it now starts to think that there must be a problem. Because if there is no butyrate there and butyrate is only made from the friendly guys, that you are being overrun by pathogens that have overgrown.

So basically we have this alarm system to tell your immune system that if the butyrate begins to drop then it means you are overrun with problematic bugs.

Our human evolution never counted on the fact that humans would stop eating fiber-rich foods. So now, in this modern era of processed and fast foods, we are basically turning on the immune system because by accident we are taking away the alert system that tells the immune system that all is well.

We’re starving out all the butyrate producing bugs which not only keep our junctions tight but also alert the immune system that there’s a problem.

Because the body is now on constant alert the inflammatory response kicks up and the immune response also revs up, causing a self-inflicted immune response.

But butyrate also does something else that’s incredible! Researchers have now discovered that it turns on the production of mucin, the very barrier that we need to keep harmful pathogens from seeping into the bloodstream. Butyrate literally keeps up the mucus barrier which supports the Akkermansia. The mucin, a slippery secretion which is the key component of mucus, supports Akkermansia so this entire system of gut mucus, tight junctions and signaling to the white blood cells are all made possible by one thing: plant-based foods: fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

Here is a list of foods which are butyrate-friendly:

Pectin: in this category are apples, grapefruit, carrots, blackberries, plums, apricots, cherries, raspberries, long berries, currants, beans, peaches and sweet potatoes.
Cellulose: broccoli sprouts, bok choy, yams, jicama, beets, sunflower seeds, alfalfa sprouts, squashes, sweet potatoes, cassava, taro root, turnips, parsnips and radishes.
Resistant Starches: navy beans, kidney beans, black beans, lima beans, legumes, pearl barley, chickpeas, peas, barley, lentils, rye and millet.
Anthocyanins (purple and red foods): blackberries, blueberries, cherries, plums, purple sweet potatoes, black currants, arena berries, pomegranate, raspberries, Maqui berries, purple cauliflower, purple asparagus, dragon fruit, red onions and black beans
Oat bran

In addition to these butyrate producing high fiber foods, you can also produce lots of butyrate by consuming raw honey and ghee.

One final and important note! Do NOT take all the butyrate supplements which are out there on the market. They are synthetically made and do not contain the life energy that is found in foods and herbs. As a result, they have an unintelligent effect on the cells of the body and are somewhat toxic to the liver since they are the synthetic toxic version of the real thing found in food and herbs.

Many take a last mini-vacation before settling in for heavier responsibilities. But this is the worst time to do so, unless you take a step back and balance your doshas! You can ease your way into a more demanding work routine by making a few ayurvedic dietary and lifestyle changes to help maximize your energy in this transitional period – Summer to Autumn.

This seasonal transition is also ideal for detox the ayurvedic shastras teach us. Detox does NOT mean heavy-duty Panchakarma or ultra-demanding protocols. It can mean something as simple as avoiding salt in your dinner meals; or completely cutting out sugar – replace with raw honey and/or lots of sweet juicy fruits; trying to go to bed earlier and waking up earlier to realign your body’s circadian rhythms with sunrise; taking one day a week (on the weekends) to stay away from EMF devices and giving your eyes, your fingers, your brain, a much needed break… But before you do any of these things, top of your list should be pacifying Pachak Pitta and Ranjak Pitta. Both Pitta subdoshas or functions of the fire element in our bodies that will most certainly go out of balance by the end of Summer. By the end of Summer, due to the heat in the environment and within our bodies, we end up craving and indulging in cold, sugary, heavy delectable sweets that further aggravate pachak and in turn, ranjak pitta. Sometimes there just is not a way around things. We have to go through them. But we can always minimize the imbalances and put the train back on track! Manage Cellulite Ayurvedically

Cellulite is very hard to get rid of, because we have not really understood what it is and how it comes to be in the first place! Vaidya Mishra gave us full insight into this phenomenon that ails mostly women, and in addition he formulated unique effective ayurvedic creams that address the mechanism of adipose or fat tissue malfunctioning and accumulation. Read more below to find out how.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

Ayurveda has a deep understanding of the causes of cellulite as well as how to manage it. At the deepest level it is said that the vibrational energy is not received through the body’s nadis and marma-s, the body’s vibrational centers which receive and distribute the flow of prana, or life energy. And if the vibrational energy is not received and circulating, then the process of cellulite formation will begin. It is also important that the three doshas, vata, pitta and kapha are balanced, as well as their subdoshas, which are various areas around the body that these doshas control. Please read my book, “Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda” for a more thorough explanation of the vibrational and physical channels, prana, vata, pitta, kapha and their subdoshas and what they control.

A good diet is necessary for optimal fat metabolism, but sometimes we also need local herbal infusion and transdermal application. This unique SVA formulation contains famous ayurvedic herbs such as Guggulu, Gymnema, Punarnava, and the most famous of them all: Lodhra.

Roll-onto cellulite-ridden areas of your body, or just areas with some fat accumulation. Couple the use of the roll-on with a good SVA diet and regular exercise and watch your fat melt away!

Ingredients:

“Fat Formula Synergy” (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary blend), with Guggul (Commiphora wightii), Gymnema sylvestre, Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Hibiscus diffusus, Lodhra (Symplocos Racemosa), Grapefruit and Sweet Orange in distilled water with Vegetable Glycerine, Beeswax and Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) oil.

So first off we need to make sure the vibrational channels are functioning properly because they control the body’s physical channels, which carry all the bodily fluids such as blood, lymph, sweat, tears, food, etc. And then at the same time we need to keep the doshas and subdoshas balanced.

Next, we must look at digestion: if it isn’t working properly toxins, known as ama (partially digested food which clogs the body’s physical channels) and ama visha (which results from the ama rotting and fermenting and turning into a hot inflammatory acidic toxin) can deposit and accumulate under the skin in the muscles, fat and fascia which is one of the main causative factors in cellulite formation. So to prevent cellulite we must address and fix the patient’s digestion to prevent the toxins from forming and depositing into these tissues.

We must also learn various ways to open up the fascia — the network of fibers, also known as connective tissue, through which the prana and other fluids flow. If our fascia gets stuck and congested, the prana and fluids can’t flow properly, resulting in stagnation in both the physical and vibrational channels, allowing toxins to deposit which create cellulite in specific areas around the body.

We also have to see how clean the 7 tissues are: the blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and reproductive fluids. Toxins held in these 7 tissues contribute to the toxins being held in the 7 layers of the skin. So we have to teach the patient how to keep these 7 tissues clean. For example, there are several processed foods and chemicals which can create toxicity in the blood plasma and blood; poor quality protein causes toxins to be deposited in the muscle tissue (like processed meats, heavy red meats, many of the protein powders currently on the market and leftover proteins which have oxidized, for example); bad fats such as vegetable oils (which cause inflammation in the fat tissue), bad salt (which causes retention of both toxins and fluid in the blood and skin). Poor quality sugars can also trigger cellulite formation, as well as heavy, channel-clogging foods and leftovers. We have specific herbs, teas and dietary recommendations to keep each of the 7 tissues clean.

Even mental and emotional stress can cause toxins to form in the blood, which also contributes to cellulite formation.

Poor circulation is another contributing factor due to a sedentary lifestyle resulting in slow metabolism and accumulation of toxins in certain body parts due to lack of movement. So we must instruct the patient on the best type of exercise for their body type.

Hormonal imbalances can also form cellulite since the hormonal system especially impacts the hips, buttocks and thighs. Here again, we have many herbs and dietary and daily routine recommendations to offer our patients to balance out their hormones.

And, this is not fair, but cellulite formation is rarely found in men since the connective tissue is arranged in a criss-cross pattern which keeps their fat layer from expanding, which prevents the superficial puckered appearance of the skin seen in women’s cellulite deposits. Women’s connective tissue is more perpendicular allowing cellulite to form more easily.

My teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra’s specialty was dermatology. Treating cellulite was the last course he gave to his doctors and lay people before his untimely passing in 2017. Thanks to his genius in treating all skin conditions, he left us with a 4-step approach to treat cellulite. The first step is to massage the cellulite with a specific type of raw silk glove, which will break down the toxins stuck in the fascia and at the same time allowing more circulation and movement to open up the flow of both the vibrational and physical channels to allow the stagnant prana and physical toxins to move out.

He then made various transdermal creams to be placed directly onto the areas affected by the cellulite. The first cream opens the channels to the affected areas so those areas can be detoxified and nourished. The second cream creates new collagen synthesis to aid in restoring the skin health by tightening up the areas of cellulite and sagging skin. And the third cream restores the fitness and elasticity to the fascia. The approach also re-enlivens the skin, giving it a healthy glow.

When we combine this with proper diet, daily routine and cleansing techniques we have great success in both preventing and treating cellulite.

So you can see from this discussion that in order to properly treat not only cellulite, but any disease process in the body, we need to take a greater perspective on the problem and not just treat the most superficial symptom. In the case of cellulite we want to make sure we don’t just address the skin and fascia, but instead look deeper to see why toxins are forming in the first place which will then get deposited into the various layers of the skin and fascia forming the cellulite.

I hope this information helps you to understand how to always step back, look at the health problem from the deepest perspective possible, thinking outside the box, so you can properly treat these problems at their various root causes.

Vetiver & Aloe

What did we ever do before air conditioning devices were introduced into our modern lives?!! How did we cool ourselves off?

Did you know that in traditional Indian village settings there were sophisticated ayurveda-informed practices that are still in used even nowadays? Remote Indian villages are nowadays equipped with modern amenities including internet connection, but many still do use traditional methods for shielding themselves against seasonal intemperance. Such as? Vetiver grass is a favorite plant for combating scorching temperatures. Mats are woven out of vetiver grass and hung on windows and entrances to filter summer heat. Did you know that freshly woven Vetiver grass mats not only infuse a delightful cooling aroma to the entire house, but the scented molecules actually carry cooling properties. Ayurveda teaches us that, property-wise, vetiver is: sheetala – cooling); snigdha – unctuous or anti-drying; and sugandha – pleasantly aromatic. Vetiver nurtures the first layer of the skin called “udakadhara,” as in the layer that holds water. But the properties of Vetiver penetrate deeper to the “raktadhara” or blood layer. In summer, the increased agni in the environment increases the heat in the blood. That’s why we may experience more heat in the body and brain. Vetiver aromatically cools off the blood and with regular use can even cool the muscle and fat tissues that are deeper tissue layers in the body.

Vaidya Mishra added another powerful plant to this formula: Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is a prized plant in many ancient cultures of the world. It is used in so many ways, internally AND externally, for soothing skin ailments, dryness, topical burns. Aloe Vera is water soluble, so it is ideal when applied topically, for refreshing and cooling to the first layer of the skin “udakadhara.” It also helps enhance the skin’s luster and complexion. But Aloe is also prized for its ability to cool off raktadhara, the blood tissue layer of the skin. When applied transdermally, Aloe quickly travels and reaches the liver and spleen, and detoxifies and pacifies the liver through the cooling properties it carries.

Vaidya Mishra combined active forms of Aloe and Vetiver in this lotion to refresh, calm and pacify the “dehagni” or cellular agni, and pacify bhrajaka – the cellular intelligence that governs the skin, and sadhak pitta – the intelligence that governs the emotional heart.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and it plays a crucial role in relaying energy and chemical transformations when exposed to sunlight. But, overexposure to sunlight can also have unwanted effects. That’s one reason this lotion will become your best “don’t-leave-the-house-without-it” friend during the hot summer days… and nights. Apply during the day to cool off and at night to regain balance after a hot day! With a light refreshing fragrance it will help soothe your body, mind and heart!

Apply liberally on all your body parts, and you can even apply on your face, and enjoy the beautiful hot summer days!

So what’s in your Vetiver & Aloe Lotion, and Why? And How does each ingredient help?

Aloe Vera: Calms and soothes the skin by its deep cooling effect on rasa (plasma) and rakta (blood);

Vetiver: is sheetala or cooling; Snigdha or unctuous; and Sugandha or aromatic;

Jojoba: Is a highly prized neutral, cooling, and light, skin lubricating natural oil;

Saffron: is the best “varnya: herb: it enhances skin complexion; it helps tone and preserve skin pigmentation;

Flame of Forest: enhances the intelligence of the skin and helps shield against sunlight. It is also a “varnya” herb or: complexion enhancer;

Devil’s Apple: supports and increases the cellular intelligence of skin;

Punarnava: Mobilizes and evacuates toxins from the “udakdhara” or water-holding layer of the skin.

Manjishta: maintains skin intelligence & pacifies “bhrajaka pitta” – the governing factor of the skin that can be easily aggravated by overexposure to the sun;

Turmeric: fights against inflammation of the skin resulting from overexposure to sunlight;

Gotu Kola: supports collagen synthesis;

Brahmi: maintains the intelligence of the skin layers;

Nutmeg: supports and maintains normal skin pigmentation;

Mucuna: supports dopamine production to maintain coordination between mind and skin – prana and vyana.

Green Tea Leaves: a great anti-oxidant for the skin, it prevents the formation of free-radicals (amavisha) from overexposure to sunlight;

Ashwagandha: supports the tactile nerves of the skin;

Lemon: helps keep a check on excess pigmentation caused by overexposure to sunlight;

Indian Sarsaparilla: acidic toxins, amavisha, released through sweat, irritate and can damage the skin. Indian Sarsaparilla purifies the sweat as well as the sweat glands;

Ashoka: maintains bliss by pacifying inflammation in the skin;

Shirish bark: supports slow but steady skin detoxification;

Sensitive Plant: nourishes and repairs the tactile nerves from damage due to overexposure to sunlight;

Neem: supports the immunity of skin through detox;

Rosemary: clears and opens the physical channels – shrotas – of the skin without heating them up.

He was hand-picked by Maharishi Mahesh yogi himself and invited to join his council of 80 ayurvedic physicians. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi affectionally addressed Vaidya Mishra as “Vaidya Shiromani” – the jewel amongst Vaidyas, the brightest gem in the crown.

Thousands of people from all over the world still keep and follow his ayurvedic recipes for daily routine and lifestyle, as well as the unsurpassable knowledge he shred with us all, that sheds light on forgotten details and interpretations of herbs and their properties, the doshas, the cosmic creational gunas, and so much more.

I first met Vaidya Mishra in the 1990s, not long after he arrived in the U.S. I was visiting friends in Colorado Springs and since I wasn’t feeling well, they brought me to see him. Vaidya felt my pulse and immediately exclaimed, “Your liver! What have you done to your liver?”

At the time, I wasn’t practicing Ayurveda, though I had studied it for years. I was working as a network chiropractor, and also practicing and studying functional medicine. What he picked up on? I had been drinking copious amounts of noni juice, thinking “if a little is good, more must be better.” After feeling my pulse, he told me to eat only rice, dahl, and loki for three months. No spices. No exceptions. I panicked. I did it for one or two days.

Years passed. Jyotishi Blaine Watson gently nudged me to call Vaidya again. I resisted. I thought, “He’s just going to tell me to eat only rice and loki.”

But life has its own timing.

In 2008, on the night Maharishi Mahesh Yogi passed, something profound happened. I am a longtime TM teacher, and that night, as I lay in bed, Maharishi came to me in golden light. entered my heart, and untied some knots I had been holding onto.

And then I heard: “It’s time to study Ayurveda. Go find Vaidya Mishra.” The very next day, I called. Vaidya said yes. I flew to Los Angeles. He initiated me into the lineage.And I never looked back….

“I remember my first consultation with Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra during his first North American tour for Maharishi Ayurveda Products USA in the late 1980s. My husband and I were armed with pen and paper to write down his recommendations. He looked at us with respect and kindness, took our pulse and recommended chewing whole coriander seeds after eating. It was a simple, inexpensive, technique to aid digestion and help eliminate toxins without overpowering the liver or the intestinal tract. This combined with transdermal and transmucosal remedies worked wonders for me because I could not the process vitamins in my food and I had trouble eliminating toxins. Immediately chronic fatigue vanished, and I felt happiness.

Since then, SV Ayurveda has always had a place in my life. When I stopped, usually I would develop some kind of health imbalance. This would prompt me to start SV Ayurveda up again with renewed appreciation for its effectiveness. _

In addition, Vaidya Mishra’s father gave him permission to reveal centuries of Ayurvedic family wisdom to anyone who asked! Vaidya Mishra worked hard to set up programs so that everyone can benefit from this protocol even after his passing.

I am grateful to Dr. Melina Takvorian-Mishra who, through Chandika and Adishakti, has continued to maintain Vaidya Mishra’s knowledge and remedies. Staying “Soma-genic”

despite the

Summer Heat!

Soma is the cooling, nurturing, materializing, vibrational energy of nature that helps us grounded so we can be and grow. It’s the foundation to great health and happiness. Without soma nothing would exist! Without soma, Agni would not exist, because Agni burns, and it burns up soma. Without Soma and Agni there would only be an endless space of vacuous space/ether extending infinitely….

In the summertime, we receive more agni from the sun and so does our environment. The light and heat from the sun makes everything blossom and grow. But it is also very drying. So in the summertime, it is important to balance things out by having lots of soma. For example, you should consume fresh easy to digest delicious somagenic food: fresh juicy sweet fruits, yoghurt, grains, milk, and other prepared foods. However, ironically, in the summertime, Agni goes low because pitta goes high! It’s a beautiful SVA teaching that requires more delving into with Vaidya Mishra. But this is one of the reasons why in high climates, traditionally, such as in South India, the consumption of somagenic foods – and coconut is a great example – is a staple in the diet. However, that is why it’s also heavily spiced! To help in the digestion and absorption of the much needed soma.

This is on the internal side of things. On the external side, it is also important to use somagenic oils, lotions, creams, that help pacify without freezing and therefore clogging the pitta in the skin – bhrajak pitta. The key, as Vaidya always reminded us, is to cool things off without putting out the fire, or Agni. Most of the time this subtle yet central distinction between Agni and pitta is lost in mainstream Ayurveda, and a plethora of problems ensue.

High Pitta people applying bushels of coconut butter on their skin to cool off, or being told to eat watermelon or melon right after meals to “cool off” digestion and/or heartburn in the stomach. What happens is things get worse because in response, the body produces even more pitta to help burn the heaviness off, and this further aggravates the dosha and perpetuates the problem because Agni, the digestive flame (in the stomach and/or in the dhatus/tissues) is already weak or completely off! You can’t start a fire without a flame. High pitta people end up with trapped heat, specially if they are strong by constitution and shleshak kapha kicks in to buffer the extra pitta heat! As you gather, this is big detailed topic of teaching that Vaidya Mishra gave us. But for now, in order to stay cool, you can use one of his many somagenic Summer lotions that will not clog your shrotas and further trap pitta in. They will help cool you off from the outside-in AND also soothe your heart and mind.

Surya Shanti Cream can be used whenever your skin is hot and burning. The Sanskrit word, surya, mean “sun.” And shanti means “pacification.” Surya Shanti Cream pacifies the heat generated by too much exposure to the sun.

This cream is an Ayurvedic sunscreen substitute, with SPF of 15 or 30. Please note it does NOT contain any chemicals for sunscreen approved by the FDA. It balances bhrajaka pitta, the pitta located in the skin. It helps reduce hot burning sensations on the skin, whether caused by internal toxins, like amavisha, or by sunburn, or by touching hot objects. Because it cools bhrajaka pitta so deeply, it can be a good preparation for exposure to the sun’s hot rays.

Surya Shanti Cream has not been tested by the FDA as a sunscreen, and should be used with caution. However, some people are reporting that it is very helpful for preventing sunburn.

We suggest that you test it for yourself. Try it on a section of skin for a moderate exposure time. You may need to keep applying during the day as it is not not waterproof, and sweat may dilute it as well.

Sunlight heats the skin dramatically. If your skin is cooled by this cream prior to sun exposure, your skin’s own natural resistance to sunburn will be stronger. It is also great to apply after sun exposure. Many of our customers have written back saying it pacifies redness caused by sunburn in just a few minutes. We invite you to test it for yourself.

The formula contains no chemicals or preservatives and delivers lots of cooling soma to the skin. It not only cools the skin, but opens the skin’s reception to soma in the environment.

This cream will not block the good things you need from sunlight. Your skin will receive what it needs to make Vitamin D from sunlight without getting imbalanced by the sun’s burning quality. If you are a high pitta type, you may experience burning sensations anytime for no apparent reason. This cream can be useful for restoring balance quickly. You may want to apply it on the neck or even the scalp whenever it starts to burn. It can also be helpful for cooling the body before sleep.

This lotion comes in two variations: regular coolness (Surya Shanti) and strong cooling Surya Maha Shanti.

What’s in Your Carry-On?!

Ayurveda can be quite a game-changer and help revitalize you during long travels transitioning from one time zone to another. What are your favorite SVA “life-savers”? Carrying your self-care favorites in sample sizes is simply smart when you’re on the road!

While traveling, Vata Dosha becomes easily imbalanced, and you may experience symptoms such as general dryness, anxiety, digestive issues – which can, in turn, lead to crazy cravings and eventually bowel issues such as constipation! Excess movement enhances the air and space qualities in our bodies. Any mobility/movement carries the properties of the air and space elements in the universe. Whenever we are on the move and we don’t balance vata dosha, we will accumulate and vitiate the air and space elements and those will result in: poor digestion, anxiety, overall dryness, etc. There are many things you can do to pacify Vata, or to avert becoming Vata imbalanced, specially when you are traveling. Here are some of our favorite SVA formulations that can help you stay cool and composed during the stress of travels!

ANTI-VIRAL Tribindu!

Stay healthy and keep germs at bay with one spray? In any place where millions of humans are transiting, like airports, we get exposed to multiple, unfamiliar germs and viruses. Carry a tiny spritzer of “ Tribindu ,” a natural spray that has antibacterial and antiviral properties, and rub it on your hands or spray on your scarf and inhale. This is especially great when you find yourself trapped in an airline seat and can’t get up to wash before the long awaited lunch tray arrives! You can choose between Tribindu with Tulsi (Holy Basil – that carries so many healing properties) or the regular Tribindu (without Holy Basil).

Prana Flow

Traveling is very tough on the srotas and nadis resulting in body aches, stiffness, or overall dosha imbalance. In addition, stiff or aggravated channels can cause undue stress and further imbalances. Apply Prana Flow on cervical area, shoulders, lower back, pulse, and feet/legs and breeeeeeaaaathe! Or apply on tight muscles and massage in for an immediate relaxation experience.

Caution: Prana Flow is slightly thermogenic, if this is your first time using, test it on your wrist first before applying on cervical and lower back areas. It’s ok to use on the feet and legs right away.
