Dietary & Lifestyle Guideline and Herbal SVA Formulations to Address Hair & Scalp
During Summer, the increased and accumulated heat in the environment and our bodies relax and maintains our physical channels (srotas) wide open and our physiology gets to release a lot of fat soluble toxins through sweat, as well as the scalp. This is a desirable natural detox, but most of the time, the toxins that are evacuated can be very irritating for the hair follicles, resulting in oily scalp, pimples, much dryness, and/or flaky skin. It is important to drink lots of water to help flush out the toxins. Here are some quick and effective SVA recommendations to help you balance things and repair the side effects that toxins may be producing locally. 
Hair & Scalp Care with Vaidya’s Herb Rich Formulations
If your scalp is dry and flaky: give yourself time to do a hair oil massage twice a week. Vaidya’s SVA HerbRich Hair oil is a tridoshic herbal blend that will nourish, rehydrate, and replenish. Warm the oil in your sink slightly, apply in your hands and massage in with your fingertips. Give your scalp a gentle yet invigorating massage. Ideally leave the oil on for 20 minutes, then wash off with Vaidya’s HerbRich shampoo (and rinse with the HerbRich conditioner if you have thick hair that tends to tangle). Do this protocol twice a week.
If your scalp is oily and itchy: give yourself time to do a hair oil massage twice a week with Vaidya’s SVA Aloe with Vit D Hair oil. Warm the oil in your sink, apply, massage in with your finger tips, leave on for 20 minutes then wash off with HerbRich shampoo and rinse with the HerbRich conditioner. Do this protocol twice a week.
Be Diet-wise! make sure you add a lot of leafy greens to your diet to help detoxify and nourish the hair follicles. Fresh Morinaga leaves and drumsticks are in season, and they are a delicious addition to the diet. Moringa is known to be very nourishing for the scalp and hair follicles.
Summer time is the time to feast on coconut – and fresh is always the best! In South India, coconut is the number one food item for lustrous hair and healthy follicles. Their hot weather allows them to eat it more months out of the year and the results speak for themself! 
Incorporate Bhring Raj nectar drops in your diet. The plant Bhring Raj is also known as “kesh raj” – the king of hair! It is famous for nurturing and supporting the hair. 
Finally, you can use Vaidya’s SVA Lustrous Hair capsules that contain Bhring Raj along with other ayurvedic herbs in a balanced synergy. 
Hair Fall?
We frequently receive questions about hair loss. There are many factors that can bring about chronic or excessive hair loss. Here are some SVA tips and dietary guidelines you can follow.
  1. avoid nightshade vegetables (tomato, potato, eggplant, bell pepper) – these increase inflammation and clog the channels. It is ok to have them once in a blue moon, but not on a daily regular basis. Replace tomato as a base sauce for your cooking with fresh sweet thai tamarind.
  2. Avoid left-overs: try not to consume anything after 4 hours of its being cooked. Do not eat leftovers from the previous day by reheating etc. Leftover food is inflammatory and generates free radicals. 
  3. Try to reduce/eliminate: coffee, vinegar, or other acidic ingredients. Favor lime over lemon. 
  4. Reduce/eliminate: onion/garlic – these contain a lot of sulfur and will not help in pitta imbalanced conditions such as hair-loss. 
  5. reduce eliminate soy and soy bi-products – tofu, soy sauce, etc
  6. Hair fall is connected to stress. If you have a stressful daily life, try to correct things by incorporating some gentle breathing yogic techniques, or meditation. Yoga always helps. 
  7. Try to get at least 7 1/2 to 8 hours of sleep at night, ideally from 9:45pm to 5:45am.
  8. Topically, there are a few things you can do to help support the skin on the scalp, balance it, so it nourishes the hair follicles and shafts. Every other day: apply the SVA HerbRich Hair oil. Warm the bottle in your sink, apply a few drops on the scalp, gently massage in with the tips of your fingers. Make sure you cover the entire scalp. Cover your head and rest for 20 minutes. Then wash off with SVA HerbRich Shampoo. Dry and style your hair then finish off with the Actifoll Plus scalp spray. After applying the Actifoll spray, expose your scalp to 10 minutes of sunlight to help support the regrowth of new hair and keep the existing hair healthy and in place. 
The HerbRich Scalp oil (you can read up more on this on www.chandika.com) will lubricate the scalp, nourishing and nurturing it, and removing any dryness that can cause starving and flaking of the hair follicles. 
The HerbRich Shampoo has so many ayurvedic herbs put together in a synergy, so that they support each others’ properties and work together synergistically to nurture, nourish, and balance the scalp, as they clean it of unwanted toxic residues. It allows the healthy friendly bacteria environment of the skin on your scalp to thrive – normal shampoos just deplete it. You can read about the ingredients on www.chandika.com.
The Actifoll Plus formula contains an herb called Psoralea corylifolia which carries the unique property of attracting and using up UV light that the scalp and follicles are exposed to; this helps activate the hair follicles so they are not dormant and new hair sprouts. In addition, this formula contains Gymnema Sylvestra, an ayurvedic plant that is used in many ways in my SVA lineage with great results. It will help with the flake residues of scalp. 
Use the Actifoll Plus every other day for a month. 
Again: please note that hair loss can be caused due to external and/or internal factors. Externally, you can make sure the water you are washing your hair in is of good quality, with a balanced pH. Internally, hair loss is connected to toxins that get evacuated through the scalp and carry hair follicles with them as they exit through the skin of the scalp, so you want to make sure you minimize toxin intake through diet as well.

Stress, Inflammation,
L-Dopa, & Depression: Is there a Link?
A recent study confirms the connection between chronic inflammation, fatigue and depression. The research carried out at Emory University explains that there is a link “between the reduced release of dopamine in the brain, the motivation to do things, and the presence of an inflammatory reaction in the body.” The scientists think this is probably the body’s way to optimize its reserves of energy during inflammatory conditions. When we have chronic inflammation (caused by stress or any physical injury) the body needs more energy to heal. […] To ensure that energy is available, the brain uses an adaptive technique to reduce the natural drive to perform other tasks which could potentially drain away the energy needed for healing.” And here is the most interesting part: “According to the new study, the mechanism of this recalibration is immune-mediated disruption of the dopamine pathway, reducing dopamine release.” Reduction of dopamine then results in low mood swings, getting us stuck in a vicious cycle. How do you break out of it? Increase dopamine to help the body’s natural healing processes to address the inflammation more effectively.

The intriguing story of Rishi Chyawan is documented in the ancient epic tale of India, the Mahabharata. Rishi Chyawan was a great seer. He was fully enlightened and thus carried no desires in his heart, except for union with the cosmic divine. It is said that he sat immobile, his senses fully retracted into the silent self-referral bliss of meditation, for numerous years, until one day, Sukanya, the young and beautiful daughter of King Sharyati, found him and accidentally awoke him from his yogic trance. The aging rishi and the young princess were soon wed. However, their conjugal bliss was overshadowed by the rishiā€™s old ascetic body.
It is then told that the celestial twin physicians, the Ashvinis, came to the rishiā€™s help.Physicians to the gods, they had garnered the entirety of Ayurvedic knowledge for the benefit of mankind and the celestial realm. They prepared a mixture that contained the best of what Mother Nature offered in terms of divine healing, balancing, and rejuvenating altogether 52 herbs, and presented it to Rishi Chyawan. Rishi Chyawan ate it, and it restored his body to its original youthful glow and functionality in no time! And the rishi and the princess lived happily ever afterā€¦.
 The recipe became known as Chyawanā€™s Prash, or the herbal mixture of Chyawan, renown for its tonic and rejuvenative powers.

Here’s a recent post on Hormonal Imbalances
“Patients suffering acute chronic conditions that have resulted from poor diagnosis walk into my clinic daily. Most of the time, their medication is not only not working anymore but it’s creating additional complications. Why is this happening? Why do we doctors inadvertently make our patients sicker? I believe we go for a “quick fix”by prescribing pharmaceuticals that will suppress and/or mask the symptoms, because we simpily don’t know why that condition has arisen in the first place! We don’t have the full big picture of the human physiology and health so we are unable to go to the root of the problem. When we fail to address the underlying cause and opt for suppressing the symptoms with pharmaceuticals, we further aggravate imbalances and cause greater undue harm. So the underlying problem isn’t only NOT addressed, BUT it is allowed to fester creating greater chronic disturbance in the long run. Examples? Here are some:
Irregular or skipped menstrual cycles: if your menses are irregular, you miss a month or two or if it comes more frequently than it should, you will most likely be prescribed birth control pills to regulate your cycle. 
  The truth is: these pills are just creating breakthrough bleeding the week the pill is stopped, giving you a false sense of security that your hormones are balanced and the cycle appears to be regular. And now you have to deal with the consequences of taking these highly toxic synthetic hormones (see my previous posts on this subject). 
  Instead, what needs to be addressed are the numerous reasons WHY the hormones are out of balance in the first place. And the reasons will definitely be different and usually multiple in each person. For example, the hormonal imbalance could be resulting from dietary insufficiencies; or could be related to chronic late bedtime and/or stress weakening the delicate glandular system; it could be resulting from a weak thyroid depressing progesterone production; amongst many other reasons.
 Your doctor needs to identify and correct these problems, then the whole endocrine system rebalances itself and the menstrual cycle returns on its own, without the intervention of dangerous toxic synthetic drugs. 
 THIS is the true art of practicing medicine. Let’s not forget that the body is fully capable of healing itself once you identify what is throwing it off balance. Don’t be lulled into chasing symptoms around the body. Look for the REASON. Symptoms are our body’s way of commucating with us, of telling us that something is wrong. Vaidya Mishra used to explain by saying that they are the fire alarm that’s going off to indicate that there is some smoke resulting from a fire somewhere. Suppressing the symptoms is like silencing the fire alarm! It is not going to make the fire go away… instead the fire will remain un-addressed, get stronger, and spread to the point where it will burn everything down…”
