In the SV Ayurveda tradition Vaidya Mishra offered us many tools to support seasonal transition and detox. ALA is one of them. Read all about it in Dr Teitelbaum’s article below. But in a nutshell, here is what ALA is:
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful both lipid- and water- soluble antioxidant. Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage — the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases. An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that produces free radicals. Free radicals are chemical byproducts produced during the process of oxidation that converts nutrients to cellular energy. As they oxidize, these compounds can become highly reactive and harmful to the cell, distorting vital components and reducing metabolic efficiency. Once formed, free radicals are highly reactive. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged, resulting in disease, aging, and overall depletion and exhaustion of our bodies. While the body can naturally manufacture enough lipoic acid for metabolic functions, supplementing can allow more optimal levels to circulate in a free state.
To get the benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid or ALA, Vaidya Mishra has put together different formulations based on different delivery systems. You can choose from the delivery system that best suits your needs and physiology. 
To improve your body’s overall circulation without heating things up, you can use the ALA massage oil. This is good improve circulation in the cellular system, nourish the nerves, support the supply of blood to the nerves throughout the entire body. If you tend to have poor circulation but are prone to pitta inflammation and heat, this oil is idea for you, specially in the winter time. If you use Pitta massage oil, you can blend the ALA oil with your current oil in the ratio of 50/50 or 80/20 as per your preference. If you are a Vata type and need more thermogenic herbs, you can combine this oil, 50/50 or 80/20 with your vata oil as a mixture and apply. The ALA oil will boost the herbs and ingredients in any other formula that it is combined with. It will act as a catalyst to enhance the effects and supply added circulation so the herbs are delivered even faster and more efficiently. You can do regular abhyanga massage with the ALA oil, warming it applying it leaving it on for 30 minutes and then showering. Or you can also do a daily quick massage on arms and legs only, after shower. You can do this throughout the year for added cumulative benefit.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid

You’re probably thinking why would an Ayurvedic physician write in an Ayurvedic newsletter about alpha lipoic acid, especially when everyone else is writing about the health benefits of the typical Ayurvedic herbs, such as Brahmi, Ashwagandha, and numerous others. We should be extolling the virtues of Ayurvedic detox and the wonders of panchakarma. Or perhaps the importance of Dinacharya in balancing the three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
But Alpha Lipoic Acid? Was this mentioned in the ancient texts some may ask? Perhaps not, but those ancient doctors were wise enough to recognize that the future will bring new cultural and envinronmental conditions that would necessitate new remedies they could not anticipate in their lifetimes. So they acknolwedged that the ideal physicians of the future would be those who would introduce new remedies based on and without swerving from the ancient foundational recommendations and guidelines. The physicians of the future would modernize Ayurveda without compromizing Ayurveda.
And that is just what Vaidya Mishra, genius that he was, did! He was able to adhere to the strict standards of the ancient texts while adapting those principles to what was needed in the physiology of the modern patient.
So let’s look at why Vaidya was enthralled with the health benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) and why he wanted to make it available to all of his doctors and patients. 
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is found in many foods and is made in our bodies as well. If you recall, antioxidants quench free radicals, or compounds that form from toxins as they enter our bodies wreaking havoc causing numerous diseases. Luckily the antioxidants come to the rescue breaking down the free radicals, before they can harm us. 
Vitamin C and Vitamin E are antioxidants and ALA can actually recycle them once they are used up, breathing new life into them, so they can continue clearing the body of the deadly free radicals. It can even recycle glutathione (our body’s antioxidant) and Coenzyme Q10. 
Some studies have suggested that ALA may enhance the body’s ability to use its own insulin to lower blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes. It has been used for years in Europe in treating certain types of nerve damage, especially in the neuropathy or nerve damage that can result from diabetes.
Since it is both fat and water soluble it can cross the blood-brain barrier and is one of the only supplements to do so. Because of this, it is used to treat numerous brain disorders, such as autism, ADHD, MS, Parkinson’s, dementia, Alzheimer’s and brain tumors.
It is THE best remedy for glaucoma and high intraocular pressure. In fact, this is one of the main reasons Vaidya developed this remedy. He had spoken to one of the countries best ophthalmologists in Beverly Hills and asked him what he considered to be a good natural remedy for reducing eye pressure. The eye doctor told him ALA was by far the best remedy for this problem. 
ALA has been used by holistic doctors here in the States for many years now, but most of these physicians are using the synthetic version. As you know, Ayurveda prides itself on using nutrients which are based in nature, grown in the fields, absorbing the vital life essence of the cosmic vibration, or pranic energy, from the sun and the moon. In fact, all the Ayurvedic herbs are processed so as to carefully keep this delicate life force intact. 
We discourage our patients from taking synthetic nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, which are made in a lab and devoid of this health-promoting life energy. This is why these remedies, which while they may have an effect, will also be riddled with side effects and toxicity to the liver and kidneys as these unintelligent nutrients create confusion within our cells. This is because the pranic vibration of nature gives our cellular system the intelligence to do all their important functions. These synthetic “dumb and dead” versions of the real nutrients found in herbs, food and spices cause the numerous side effects we experience when taking them.
Vaidya was very careful when he decided he wanted to make ALA — he found suppliers who made it from spinach and broccoli, the two foods containing the highest amounts of ALA. We are so lucky to have this version of ALA as the research now shows that the ALA made from food is 10 times more potent than its synthetic cousin. 
First he developed the ALA lotion to be used around the eyes, on the forehead, the eyebrows, temples (the locations of the eye’s marma points) and under the skull where the neck begins (the location of the brain’s marma points). Both the lotion or the ALA cream can be applied down the entire spine, on the wrists and the soles of the feet, which represent all the areas which would affect our nervous system. We have reduced intraocular eye pressure in many patients by the use of the ALA lotion over the past several years since Vaidya first released it.
We also use it in the autistic children and just about any other brain/nerve problem we see, as mentioned previously.
I recommend ALA oil to our patients and instruct them on how to do abhyanga, or oil massage, 2-3 times a week with this outstanding oil. Apply the oil over the whole body, leave it on 20 minutes, then wash it off. You may also leave it on if you prefer. If you are sensitive enough, you can feel the cells enlivening, almost as if they become energized with the increased production of antioxidants the ALA is promoting throughout the entire physiology.
I encourage you to try one of these products and see if your health benefits — even if you don’t have any of these health problems — it is always good to stay ahead of the curve and prevent disease from happening in the first place. ALA definitely can do that for you as it increases the levels of all of your body’s antioxidants — vitamin C, E, glutathione and CoEnzyme Q10.

Neem is yet another divine very bitter tasting herb that is well known and used extensively in Ayurveda internally and externally. Neem, overall, is used for detoxification, especially of the skin, and for immuno-modulation.
In Sanskrit neem leaf is called nimba. The Ayurvedic text Bhava Prakash describes it as sheeta (cooling), tikta (bitter), grahi (enhancing absorption), katupaka (pungent effect after digestion), and krimipranut (making it hard for harmful microbes to live with).
Neem is one of the most powerful herbs for detoxifying the liver. With the compromised state of the modern physiology and liver in the world today, this herb must be used with extreme caution: if the liver is detoxified too quickly, the old toxins sitting there will go back into the bloodstream and relocate in other parts of the body with the potential to cause serious problems and disease. That’s why Vaidya developed Trans-dermal and Trans–mucosal application of this potent plant.
Neem for the Skin – Transdermally
Neem taken in large doses is very powerful. In fact, the crude form of this herb should not be taken in large doses as it may awaken the detox process faster than the toxins can be safely evacuated. Neem soap, however, delivers many of the properties of neem that support immunity but in a manner that will not overwhelm the body’s detox pathways. 
Another benefit of neem in the transdermal delivery system is that it can be used directly on targeted areas of the skin, when and as/where needed for gentle detox and to support skin immunity. For example, here is what you can expect with the Soap:
  • Transdermal absorption of neem while you bathe
  • Only the prabhavas (special qualities) of neem are delivered. The highly bitter and detoxifying rasa (taste) is not present.
  • Allows for targeted topical application of neem on specific areas of the skin
  • No SLS foaming agent or harsh preservatives found in most soaps
In contrast, the transmucosal delivery has different properties.
  • Gives just the prabhavas (special qualities) and sukshma bhag (subtle essence) of neem without the strongly liver detoxifying bitter taste
  • Provides a gentle delivery of this powerful herb
  • Added to 1 to 2 liters of cool water and sipped throughout the day 
  • Does not have to go through the digestive, metabolic or liver system
  • Although not as detoxifying as whole neem leaf, this herbal-memory nectar should still be used with caution and under the supervision of an SV Ayurveda practitioner. 
With the nectar drops you get the benefit of the prabhavas (specific ultimate effects) of neem without a strong detoxification effect. Nonetheless you should still use caution, even with these drops. Vaidya Mishra recommends that you not use these nectar drops except under the strict supervision of your Shaka Vansiya health practitioner.

wonders of creation! We may boast of our 21st century
technological scientific achievements and discoveries, but we are just barely getting to know the basics of life. Did you know that for every identified species on earth, there are 4 more that have yet to be discovered? What’s more, in this playful multiplicity, each one of Nature’s creations is as good as the other. Each one fulfills its own unique purpose in the bigger scheme of things, aiding in the maintenance and promulgation of the entire environment. None is better than the other or competes with the other…
There are, however, some exceptions to the rule! Based on their internal make-up or Guna constitution, some species of animals or plants are more pro-life or evolution, while others
may have slightly different counter-evolutionary agendas that operate through delay tactics! Some species are more user-friendly, so to speak, while others may cause unduly delay and stress. So
how do we know to classify all these based on their supportive or destructive nature? The knowledge is so vast, and the criteria so subtle and complex, that most of it cannot be discerned by our microscopes or fancy scanners. Luckily, as the ayurvedic story goes, a group of highly evolved humans who lived several thousands of years ago already took the time to do this for us. And the great part is, we can now confirm some of their findings with our modern technology. Such for example is a very special plant that goes by the name of Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia). 
Amidst all the plants available to humans, Guduchi, was called
“Amrita” – bestower of eternal life – by the ancient seers. A native climber of North and South India, it is now increasingly gaining favor as a medicinal herb amongst scientists. Long touted as a powerful and divine herb throughout the alternative history of Ayurvedic healing, modern research is coming to recognize its unprecedented benefits through a number of research studies.
This plant has origins of mythical dimension. It is told in India’s most ancient epic tale of cosmogenesis, The Ramayana, that guduchi became a plant on earth when Lord Indra sprinkled amrit (nectar of immortality) from heaven. After the war with Ravana, Rama prayed to Indra that he bring back to life all the monkeys and bears that had fought by his side and died. Indra granted this wish and sprinkled the nectar from heaven. Wherever a drop landed on a dead monkey or bear, it came back to life. Wherever it landed on the earth, it became a guduchi plant.
The healing properties of guduchi are nearly endless. It is the best rasayana (rejuvenative) known in Ayurveda. As Vaidya Mishra’s SVA lineage explains, it is the only plant that can bind both amavisha (internal toxins) and garavisha (external toxins) and reestablish the intelligence of the body by repairing local damage caused by the toxins. 

Vaidya Mishra further taught that Guduchi is full of Soma (nature’s cooling, nurturing lunar vibration) and helps to rebuild the dhatus (tissues) if/when they become low. Guduchi helps to clean the flame of the heart (vakshagni) so that it can handle any emotional challenges that may come its way.
Guduchi has all the properties of amritam, a rejuvenating and strengthening nectar. It is considered to be one of the most effective rasayanas / rejuvenative that may help to rid the body of deep rooted imbalances. In fact, it is so full of life and receptive to vibrational energy, guduchi can grow without any soil or water.

Cautionary Effects of Guduchi:
Guduchi may lower blood sugar levels, therefore diabetic patients are advised to use it with caution under the supervision of the medical physician.
Avoid taking guduchi during pregnancy and breastfeeding Large doses may cause nausea.
Since it is considered a highly effective detoxifying herb, in particular for the liver, guduchi should be administered with proper preparation. Otherwise, improper use can lead to a detox crisis. 7
Cautions for Using Guduchi
You have to be careful when using guduchi. It is a powerful herb that can easily cause a detox crisis if it is not used with care. This is especially true when using the tablets. The physical herb will have a direct effect on the more gross physical dimension of the body triggering an accelerated detox. Toxins that are being evacuated need proper transportation pathways leading out so as not to 7
contaminate the physiology on their way out through toxic fumes or acidic residues. Once toxins are released in the body, there is no putting them back. Toxins travel through designated channels that have to be healthy to bear the load of the detox process, otherwise they may rupture those channels and flow over into neighboring organs, organ systems, tissues, causing further damage.
If diet is not proper and if there is no preparation of the channels before using it, it can at best be ineffective and at worst do more harm than good. The body must be properly prepared to handle the detoxifying property of guduchi.
There seems to be no relief for the modern liver. The sheer amount of toxins that the body has to deal with—generated both internally (emotional and digestive toxins) and externally (chemicals and EMF) is staggering.
When a detoxifying herb like guduchi is given to someone with an overload of toxins in the liver, or an overload of toxins in other deep tissues of the body, it can draw them out very quickly. The old toxins begin to come out of the liver and the deep tissues, and it may be too much for the body to eliminate.
There must not be any constipation in the body, which would prevent the toxins from getting out when they reach the colon. The channels in the body should be alkaline so that they can buffer the acidic toxins coming out.
Also, the digestion must be strong enough to fully digest the crude herb found in these tablets. And the liver must be clean enough to metabolize the herb without killing the vibrational energy of the herb.
Always use this herb under the direct supervision of a Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner. Your practitioner may recommend the Guduchi Herbal Memory Nectar formulation because it is a safer way to deliver the properties of guduchi when the liver is full of toxins without causing a detox crisis.

Vaidya Mishra often spoke of divine plants or herbs, and he did not use the term just poetically. These are truly gifts of Mother Nature in the sense that they carry a perfect combination of balancing and rejuvenative properties. Moringa (sigru in Sanskrit) is one such gift. Not only do the ancient ayurvedic texts recommend Moringa, but there is ever growing medical evidence for the incredible nutritional, therapeutic and prophylactic properties of this ancient divine plant. 
But with Ayurveda, we always start with the basics and take them further. For example, we know to look deeper than nutritional content and consider just the taste of an ingredient. Taste actually carries properties and displays the action or potency of that item. So we know that the bitter taste for example is made from the space and air elements. And these elements counteract/balance the heavy and clogging properties of heavy starchy foods we may crave, specially in the winter/spring time. Adding foods and plants with the bitter taste, such as karela (Bitter Gourd) or Moringa, will help balance your body and mind. Moringa specially will be ideal to help with detox and rejuvenation. 
Sobhanjan or Sigru (Moringa Olifeira), is a vegetable famous all over India for its detoxifying as well as nurturing properties. All together there are 13 species and 400 extant names for it. In the SVA tradition, Vaidya Mishra uses only 2: a sweet variety and a bitter variety. The bitter variety is bitter in taste and carries more medicinal properties. We use the leaf of the bitter variety and pulverize it in our SVA products. 
If you have never done any Moringa before, you have to start with a low dose, use less frequently, and give your body the opportunity to adopt the new ingredient. This is why Vaidya Mishra made 2 preparations, one: Moringa Tea, which has the moringa leaves along with coriander powder. This tea is safe to start with 1/4 tsp in 16oz of water and sip slowly throughout the day. Do only once a day. 
The other product great for detox is the soup; however, it is much more detoxifying. You can start with 1/2 tsp per person (in 16oz water) and increase from there up to 2 tsp per person. if any detox occurs, even though starting slow, for example: if you experience diarrhea, itchiness, rash, stop using it and consult with your SVA expert. Alternately, you can use the Moringa drops – 1 drop per 12 oz of water – drink slowly throughout the day. This will introduce the “intelligence” of the Moringa molecule to your body and work silently but surely. Vaidya’s Moringa soap can be a delightful addition to your facial cleansing or body-wash routine. Or just use as a hand-soap. Soft, moisturizing, and with transdmeral delivery of Moringa to help support skin detox.

It’s Time To Shake Things Up!
~ Recipes & Tips for Metabolic Body Types ~
Juicing is convenient, it’s fast, it’s packed with nutritionally high fresh ingredients. But is it really as healthy as it is made out to be? In ayurvedic terms, of course, it all depends on what’s in it, and when you are consuming it, because bottom line and in SVA terms, the formula for health is super simple: you want your food to be rich in soma and nourishing, but without suppressing or putting out your digestive fire or agni! You want it to be satiating enough but not heavy and clogging so it does not block your channels and result in undigested toxic waste or ama. In a nutshell, you want your food to balance all your doshas without aggravating or depleting any of them so it can result in the ultimate post-digestive nectar that bestows immortality – ojas. Without ojas, we cannot experience the higher states of immortal consciousness. That’s why there’s really nothing more important than you what you eat, day in day out…. And that’s why juicing has become such a fad: in the search for the healthy instant meal, we have compromized and sacrified other important ayurvedic principles.  
For one, juicing gurus suggest and mix-in ingredients helter-skelter, adding protein powders, dehydrated vegetable powders, soy, etc. We don’t need to wait for long term consumption to confirm the results and see that such recipes cause more harm than good. This is one of the reasons Vaidya Mishra introduced his Vegan Protein Powders – clients used to ask him about juicing, so he had to re-introduce us to the ancient ayurvedic method of consuming a nourishing and refreshing protein shake on-the-go. This SVA Vegan Protein Powder is not only tri-doshic but it is also soy and gluten-free. 
A word on ‘other’ protein powders: One of the factors that made Vaidya decide to make this high protein powder was that so many of his clients were supplementing their protein intake with unhealthy alternatives, such as soy, green peas, and whey powders. These mixes are very popular in the marketplace. Let’s take a brief look as to why they should be best avoided.
The problem with soy: While it is true that soy beans provide a rich source of amino acids, it is equally true that all that glitters is not gold! In SVA, we know to look beyond the label to see a food’s ultimate effect on the doshas, tissues, physical channels, and vibrational channels. Soy is a major ‘channel blocker,’ consumption of which is suitable only by those doing hard physical labor day in day out – not at all suitable for the diet of the office or professional worker. Soy is also highly estrogenic and can promote many disturbances in the female physiology. To avoid such problems and to keep your channels open, steer clear of soy-based protein supplements.  
The problem with green peas: Peas and pea-based protein powders are mahavistambhi. Maha means ‘great.’ That is to say, peas are first-class channel blockers, even more so than soy. They will slow down your overall metabolic system, promote the production of toxins, or ama, and long-term cause many unwanted imbalances. For those who already experience joint pain or joint related conditions, they should avoid them by all means.
Whey or No Way?  Whey protein is a mixture of globular proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. Not only is it clogging to the channels, whey is very acidic. We know that our physiology needs good pH to be healthy. Eating whey provides protein but it will also unnecessarily introduce more acidity into the physiology. Plus, as a protein isolate, whey has lost the intelligence originally found in its milk source and has become a ‘dumb’ protein. Dumb foods (less prana) are hard to digest and likely to produce ama (toxins.)

Even with all the processing, the liveliness of black chana is still there. However, with proper samyog (combination) and proper samskar (processing) the powder can be enjoyed by all constitutions and all types of agni – your body’s digestive power: 1) vishmagni (variable); 2) tiksnagni (sharp); 3)mandagni (slow); and 4) samagni (balanced). 
1. Vata (vishmagni): Some people have variable appetite and digestion. Sometimes no hunger, sometimes high hunger. In this case use this recipe. Blend well.
Spring water: 8 oz.
Instant Vegan Protein Powder: 2 TBSP
Raw sugar: ½ tsp. 
Soma Salt: add per taste
Lime juice: 1 TBSP
Cumin seeds (dry roasted and ground): ¼ tsp.
Grated ginger (optional): ¼ tsp.
Green chili (optional): small piece
1a) Pro-biotic variation: Same as above with 1 TBSP homemade, fresh yoghurt. Blend in blender 3 – 5 minutes.
2. Pitta (high agni, high pitta): Some people always have intense hunger and intense appetite. This recipe is for them.
Spring water: 8 oz.
Instant Vegan Protein Powder: 4 TBSP
Rose Petal Preserve: 1 tsp. or rose powder ½ tsp. 
Raw sugar: 1 tsp. (not needed if using rose preserve)
2a) Pro-biotic variation: Same as above with 4 TBSP homemade, fresh yoghurt. Blend in blender 3 – 5 minutes.
3. Pitta (low agni): For those with heat, acidity, along with poor digestion and less hunger. Blend in blender.
Spring water: 8 oz.
Instant Vegan Protein Powder: 2 TBSP
Fennel seeds (toasted and ground): ½ tsp
Rose Petal Preserve: 1/2 tsp. or rose powder 1/4 tsp.
Raw sugar: 1/2 tsp. (not needed if using rose preserve)
Clove: 1 bud
Green Cardamom: 1 pod
3a) Pro-biotic variation: Same as above with 1 TBSP homemade, fresh yoghurt. Blend in blender 3 – 5 minutes.
4. Kapha (mandagni): Best for kapha constitutions and those with heavy, slow digestion and low appetite.
Spring water: 8 oz.
Instant Vegan Protein Powder: 2 TBSP
Black pepper ground: 1/8 tsp
Soma Salt: add per taste
Lime juice: 1 TBSP
Kapha Garcinia Masala: ½ tsp. First toast in 1 tsp. of Mom’s Ghee
4a) Pro-biotic variation: Same as above with 1 TBSP homemade, fresh yoghurt. Blend in blender 3 – 5 minutes.
5. Fat metabolism and Weight loss recipe
Spring water: 8 oz.
Instant Vegan Protein Powder: 4 TBSP
MedAgni Masala: ½ tsp
Soma Salt: add per taste
Lime juice: 1 TBSP
5a) Pro-biotic variation: Same as above with 2 TBSP homemade, fresh yoghurt. Blend in blender 3 – 5 minutes.
6. Muscle Gain Formula: if your muscle tissue needs more support and nourishment,  boil milk and water together first. 
Spring water: 4 oz.
Organic milk: 4 oz.
Instant Vegan High-Protein Shake Powder: 4 TBSP
Ghee: 1 tsp.
Rose Petal Preserve: 1/2 tsp. 
Raw sugar: 1 tsp. (not needed if using rose preserve)
Green Cardamom: 1 pod
7. Sugar Metabolism: this recipe will enhance sugar metabolism. Do Not use if you have tendency to low blood sugars or hypoglycemia. Make the soup mix first by adding and mixing in just boiled water. After it cools to comfortable temperature add the mix and other ingredients. Blend well. Drink.
Spring water: 10 oz.

Cocoa Quinoa Laddoos for your Valentine?
Yes, Please!
The origin of the word “laddu” (also spelt “laddoo”) is unknown. In Sanskrit, laddoos are called “Modak.” In general, modak is a small ball made of flour, ghee, sugar, and some spices. 
Most common recipe for laddoos includes besan (black small chickpea flour) combined with sugar, cooked in ghee and molded into a ball shape. The Carak Samhita contains many laddu recipes prepared using Ayurvedic medicinal ingredients. 
  
In India, laddoos are often prepared for festivals or family events such as weddings and births, or given as a prasad(offering) at Hindu temples.

Vaidya Mishra explains that the cocoa bean, and therefore its powder, is heavy and clogging for the physiology. However, there is always a way, through SVA, for those of us who want to have their chocolate and eat it too!

This recipe uses Madhur Masala, or sweet masala, a
SVA mixture to be used ideally with sweet foods in order to counter-balance their clogging heavy property. In addition, you may make your laddus extra special by adding either the Shakti for Him or the Shakti for Her ayurvedic spice and herb mixture. These rejuvenative mixtures were formulated by Vaidya Mishra to help balance and replenish hormonal activity within the physiology. They have great rasayan (rejuvenative) properties and can be blended in either with savory (soups or curries) or sweet dishes) milk, muffins, and now laddus! 
The pink peppercorns add a special twist to the recipe and also help with counterbalancing the clogging effect of chocolate as they belong to the pepper family. However, some people may not like the fruity and slightly pungent taste.
The step-by-step recipe below will make 10-12 bite-size laddoos. The laddoos will also keep well in the fridge for up to 2 weeks – that’s if they last that long and don’t get eaten up with the hour!
  • 4 tablespoons Besan flour (black chickpea flour available from any Indian grocery store) or grind your own for extra freshness
  • 4 tablespoons organic Quinoa flakes
  • 6 tablespoons organic brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons slivered almonds (blanched or non-blanched)
  • 1 tablespoon organic Cocoa powder – unsweetened and alkali free
  • 3 tablespoons melted Mom’s Ghee
  • 15-20 organic green cardamoms – crushed
  • 10-15 organic pink rosebuds
  • 1 teaspoon Madhur Masala
  • 1 teaspoon VJK for Him or For Her – optional
  • 1 teaspoon whole or crushed pink peppercorns – optional
  • 1 pinch of Soma Salt – optional

Preparation:
  • Mix the Besan and Quinoa flakes and slowly dry toast on a dry pan. This is the longest part of your recipe, make sure you keep mixing the powder so it toasts evenly. When the color turns a golden light brown, put the mixture into a mixing bowl.
  • Next add the cocoa powder to your mixture.
  • At this point, add Madhur Masala. If you are adding ayurvedic herbal/spice mixtures to your recipe do it now (VJK For Him and For Her)
  • At this point, crush the cardamom pods and add along with the rose buds to a pan, add your ghee
  • and melt the whole thing stirring frequently. You may cook this on low heat for 1-2 minutes to
  • better infuse the ghee with the cardamom and the rose.
  • In the meantime, add the sugar to your dry mixture and mix every thoroughly.
  • Now add the sugar to your dry mixture.
  • Next pour the hot melted ghee through a tea filter over your mixture evently and with a spoon
  • make sure all your dry mixture is nicely and evenly blended.
  • Now you can add in the dry toasted and sliced almonds and mix the ingredients a little further.
  • You are now ready for your final step of shaping your mixture into little balls or laddus. You can
  • use an ice cream scooper to make sure you are picking up the same amount every time and your laddus will be of the same size. Flatten the mixture in your hand and squeeze tightly to bind all the ingredients together and then gently roll from palm to palm (see the video) and your laddoo is ready.
  • Repeat this step until you finish all the mixture.
  • To top it off, you can shred some pink peppercorns on top with a pepper mill to add a twist of
  • flavor. Enjoy!

Incomparable Tulsi
~ for Immunity & Sattva ~
Tulsi is a divya aushadhi – a divine ayurvedic herb. The Sanskrit name tulsi or tulasi means “beyond compare.” It is also the name of an incomparably beautiful young woman who’s greatest desire was to marry the perfect man, and her father taught her that none other was more perfect than Lord Vishnu. In order for her to be united with the man of her dreams, she had to go through great trials and intricate unfoldings involving all the gods, demons, overcome curses, and finally receive blessings and her heart’s desire.
The wedding of Tulsi and Lord Vishnu is ritually celebrated every year with great pomp in all vedic households. No worship of Lord Vishnu is complete without an offering of the Tulsi plant and one cannot be without the other- they remain joined to eternity. But there is so much more that the Tulsi plant also offers us besides the example of total love and surrender to the beloved. 
Tulsi is also called surasa - favorite of the gods, and devadundubhi - resonating on a divine wavelength. This divya aushadhi embodies spiritual purity in a plant, and it enlivens the same quality in us when we use it or are near it. This is why it is also called holy basil – occimum sanctum.
Supports the Heart But is Also Immune Strengthening 
In Ayurveda, Bhava Prakash classifies tulsi as hridya - a plant that gives long, healthy life to the heart. Tulsi is heating, which would normally aggravate the sadhaka pitta of the heart, but it carries a very high divine vibration that strengthens and supports the satwa, divine light, of the heart. 
Bhava Prakash also says Tulsi is ”apetarakshasi” and “bhutagni.” In Sanskrit both these words mean “bactericidal.” Bhuta, in Ayurveda, denotes microscopic bacteria or living entities invisible to the naked eye. The term “apeta-rakshasi,” also refers to all non-visible energetic entities,” that are dis-ease spreading entities in Ayurveda. Tulsi is a good protective herb and in this sense has been used for immunity. 
But in addition, its immune-strengthening properties also derive from the fact that it strengthens overall metabolism and digestion - it is dipani . Tulsi is noted in the Ayurvedic texts for its ability to bring light (dipani) or fire – it enlivens not only the spiritual light of consciousness (sattwa) but it also ignites the flames of digestion and transformation in the body sharpening metabolism. In addition, it is also good for the liver because it stimulates the bhutagnis - burners of the liver. But, and here is another wonderful property: it also helps the mind by nourishing the medhagnis - knowledge-processing ability of the brain.
The bitter taste (tikta rasa) of tulsi is also an important factor in killing bacteria, by making it difficult for them to thrive. For this reason, tulsi has been used to boost the immune system and fight colds for centuries. The combination of being bactericidal, increasing agni (digestion) and a satwic plant makes this an ideal herb for strengthening immunity. It is also helpful to use when there is high kapha/ high ama.
Caution for Using Tulsi
But because tulsi has ushna virya (heating thermogenic factor) and katuka rasa (pungent taste) and dipani prabhava (the special quality of increasing the digestive and other flames, or agnis, in the body), anyone who has a high pitta constitution this can cause burning or other pitta related problems, so it must be used in moderation. In fact, Bhava Prakash warns that tulsi is dahapittakrit – increases pitta and may aggravate burning in the body. Tulsi should be used in moderation, according to the specific state of balance of the person in order to avoid this problem or you can use the alternative transdermal or transmucosal delivery methods made by Vaidya Mishra specifically for this reason (see below). 
Tulsi should never be used during pregnancy to avoid a miscarriage, unless it is used under the doctor’s supervision. Bitter properties in herbs may cause miscarriage.

Tulsi Is Heating
When you take the physical herb (such as in tablet form) you get the most potent dose of the physical properties. When the herb is infused in water, the physical properties are diluted and become moderate. When you take it in Herbal Memory Nectar form or Transdermal Cream form, the physical properties are almost absent (only the vibrational qualities remain, so you still get the ultimate effect but are able to bypass the side-effects. 
Tulsi, in tablet form, can be a powerful herb to increase immunity (bhutaghni), to supply more prana to the heart (hridya), to decrease kapha and vata (kaphavatajit) and to simulate digestion (dipani). However, the heating quality of tulsi is also strongest in tablet form.

Tulsi in Different Delivery Methods
  • Contains only the subtlest essence of tulsi (the herbal memory).
  • Bypasses the liver, which may be in poor shape due to modern lifestyle, and delivers the prabhavas (special qualities) of tulsi directly to the tissues. If the liver is full of toxins, the divine quality of tulsi will be destroyed when it passes through the liver. This is not the case with this herbal memory nectar, which does not go through the liver.
  • Travels quickly, without delay of digestion and begins acting right away.
  • Should be added to 1 to 2 liters of cool, neutral pH spring water and sipped throughout the day.
  • Is a great way to use tulsi even if the liver is compromised
  • Bypasses the liver and delivers tulsi directly to the cellular systems through the skin- transdermally.
  • Is great to use before meditation.
  • Does not heat the body the way tulsi usually does.

Tribindu is a classical formula that Vaidya augmented by adding Tulsi for extra potency. You can spray it on a cotton scarf to inhale, or in the room with a diffuser to get all the protective and cleansing benefits of its ingredients: Tulsi, Camphor, Ajwain, and Mint. Easy to use and carry everywhere you go, you will not be able to be without it.
  • Contains the full power of tulsi.
  • Can aggravate pitta and cause excess heat in the body.
  • The liver must be relatively free of toxins if the divine nature of the herb is to ever reach the cells of the body.
  • The seeds of tulsi are used in certain cases instead of the leaves, according to the specific instructions of your Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner.
  • Can aggravate pitta and cause burning in the body, especially if you already have high pitta.
  • The liver must not have a lot of toxins which can damage the divine quality of tulsi before it reaches the rest of the body.
  • Contains the full power of tulsi in tablet form.
  • Requires that the liver be fairly healthy. If toxins are present, the divine nature of tulsi will be damaged and the effectiveness of the herb will be compromised.
  • Can heat the body and aggravate pitta.
  • Contains tulsi with the balancing effect of five other herbs.
  • Get all the benefits of Tulsi without aggravating pitta
  • Delicious and balancing and strenghtening for all doshas

The shrotas, physical channels, in the body are given immense importance in Shakha Vansya Ayurveda. The Ayurvedic texts are also very emphatic about their role: shroto mayo purusha, “The whole body is nothing but shrotas.”
In a nutshell: only when our physical channels are healthy can we truely feel balanced and blissful. But what does a healthy channel mean? It means it is not shrunk, not dried up, not obstructed. Only then can they serve their primary role of being pathways to circulate nourishment to all the layers, surface and deep, and into into the different tissues and organs, and cells. Only then can they also serve the purpose of supporting the evacuation and elimination of toxins. This is why, many a times, detox goes awry with the best of protocols – because the shrotas are not part of the equation. This is also why in cold winter weather, we may experience fatigue and sluggishness, sharp hunger, and also cold hands and feet. It all comes down to the shrotas and to supporting circulation in them through good food but also spices and herbs. In the wintertime, when we crave more somagenic food – heavy, sweet, proteinous – it is easy to feel sluggish and tired afterwards. Sometimes we also end up eating too much good heavy food and experience numbing or tingling in our extremities due to slower circulation. This is one of the many reasons Vaidya made his Shroto Shuddhi tea and spice mix. But another reason is just as fascinating.
One of the beautiful aspects of knowledge from Vaidya Mishra was not just the way he explained soma, what it is and how it helps us, but also how he differentiated between earthy vs liquid soma. This idea of distinguishing between earthy and liquid soma is not just on the level of the food items (dravya) but also on the level of digestion and post-digestion. Depending on whether the soma you ingest is solid or liquid, there are specific spices and herbs that are used to help with digestion and absorption. 
This is another reason why he made the Shroto Shuddhi tea and the Shroto Shudhi Masala. 
The tea targets channels in the body carrying liquid soma (water soluble materials). Note that both the tea and the spice mix support the physical channels and burn/ ama (partially digested food material) without aggravating amavisha (reactive toxins sitting in the body).
What’s in the Shroto Shudhi tea? Allspice, Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, Mace, Black pepper, Green Cardamom, Ginger, White pepper. A highly aromatic delicious blend that you can make on its own (1/4-½ tsp per 10 oz of water) or add to Vaidya’s Cup. You can alternately also add fresh almond milk and drink anytime of day – first thing in the morning or later in the day after lunch or dinner. 
Shroto-Shudhi Tea compliments the Shroto-Shudhi Masala perfectly. The masala targets channels in the body which carry earthy soma (food materials) and, when cooked with oil in the food (ghee, olive oil), the masala targets channels in the body which carry lipid soluble materials. 
When you need more channel opening power, this masala starts where Mom’s Masala leaves off. It is great when you have a cold, are feeling sluggish, anytime in winter, or when the body’s shrotas (physical channels) are blocked.

What’s in the Shroto Shuddhi Masala, and why? 
Ingredients
Turmeric: Supports the intellegence of the liver and cleanses the liver and blood.
Cumin: Enhances absorption, burna ama (toxins from undigested food particles), supports digestion and metabolism without overheating the system.
Coriander: Helps to remove toxins through the urinary tract, cools and balances the other warmer spices, protects from acidity by having an alkalizing effect on digestion.
Fennel:Cools and enhances the coordination between the other ingredients and spices.
Fenugreek: Supports sugar and fat metabolism.
Black Pepper: Opens the micro and macro channels of the body and brain, enhances the oxygenation in the channels of the brain, supports the kidney channels.
Cinnamon: Encourages glucose and carbohydrate metabolism.
Kalonji: Balances the hormonal system, adding a distinct aromatic flavor, and balances the subdoshas of the colon and stomach.
Green Cardamom: Supports the metabolism of protein, and balances the coordination of the three subdoshas of the stomach: samana vata, kledaka kapha, and pachaka pitta.
Black Cardamom: Supports protein metabolism, and adds a nice unique flavor.
Nutmeg: Establishes a deeper connection between the mind, stomach and colon, helping retain the integrity of intelligence in the channels when they become overwhelmed.
All-spice: Opens the channels without overwhelming them.
White Pepper: Adds a unique flavor, opens the micro and macro channels of the body and brain, enhances the oxygenation in the channels of the brain, supports the kidney channels.
Pink Pepper: Adds unique fruity flavor, opens the channels deep within the cellular system, brings a deeper sense of satisfaction.
Mace: Unique flavor, opens the channels and calms the mind, enhances the connection between the mind and the digestive tract.
Clove: Opens the channels and cools the digestive system.
Size
Choose between 6 oz. and 2 oz. (loose, ground spices)
Directions
Add to any savory dish as the main cooking spice mix. It tastes great in lentils and vegetables.
This masala has been not been pre-toasted so it should not be used to sprinkle on top of food. It should be used only as a spice mix for cooking. Cooking with water and oil, or ghee, allows the water soluble and lipid soluble components of this masala to reach their targeted destinations in the body.
Do not use if you experience stomach acid or heartburn or tend to have very high sharp metabolism (high pitta/ high agni). Try Vaidya Mishra’s Pitta Masala instead.

Did you know that some studies suggest that Vitamin D may help protect against COVID-19? In an article updated on January 13, 2021 on the Harvard Health Publishing online library (www.health.harvard.edu) we read the following: 
“There is some evidence to suggest that vitamin D might help protect against becoming infected with, and developing serious symptoms of, COVID-19. We know, for example, that people with low vitamin D levels may be more susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections. One meta-analysis found that people who took vitamin D supplements, particularly those who had low vitamin D levels, were less likely to develop acute respiratory tract infections than those who didn’t. Vitamin D may protect against COVID-19 in two ways. First, it may help boost our bodies’ natural defense against viruses and bacteria. Second, it may help prevent an exaggerated inflammatory response, which has been shown to contribute to severe illness in some people with COVID-19.”
But there are so many other reasons you need to maintain optimal Vit D levels. Vitamin D – is in fact is not a vitamin but a secosteroid – is not only good for the bones but prevents autoimmune reactions and depression; Vit D is also crucial for thyroid and glandular health, and yet so much more as well:

  1. The prevention of chronic diseases such as many forms of cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension. 
  2. The protection and lubrication of your bones, teeth and hair. 
  3. The regulation of cellular growth and healthy cell activity. 
  4. Overall reduction of the inflammatory response, a condition
  5. known to cause many chronic diseases, from cancer to
  6. diabetes to obesity. 
  7. Protection against adult osteoporosis. 
  8. Reduction in the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal
  9. women. 
  10. Significant reduction in the occurrence of prostate cancer in African-American men. 
Optimal Levels of Vitamin D help to: 
  • Prevent bone fractures 
  • Prevent osteoporosis 
  • Reduce the risk of cancer, especially colon cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer 
  • Reduce the risk of diabetes, especially in young people and in those living at high altitude 
  • Protect against heart disease, including high blood pressure and heart failure 
  • Reduce your risk for multiple sclerosis 
  • Improve you mood 
  • Improve your lung function.
However, many experience that orally ingesting high doses of Vit D actually further depletes their levels instead of improving it. This is because the body is neither able to process nor absorb it. SVA does not recommend taking Vit D orally – unless your doctor has prescribed it – as everything you swallow has to be processed by the liver and the digestive system. Vit D is a condensed fatty molecule and this puts additional strain on the digestive organs – specially the liver. This is why Vaidya Mishra developed different Transdermal formulas that when applied to the skin directly travel into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver and digestive organs. This not only supply Vit D safely and effectively, but the formulas also contain a blend of ancient ayurvedic herbs to help support the body in its metabolization of this heavy fatty molecule.
With Vaidya Mishra’s transdermal formulations it is now as easy as rubbing it unto your skin or remembering to use your daily deodorant. Vaidya Mishra made the Vit D Deodorants because our armpits contain fatty hormonal glands that further facilitate the absorption of the Vit D molecules. Apply the cream or the roll-on on the lower arms from the elbows to the wrists – this is an easy area to access. But remember you can apply it anywhere. Use at least one half teaspoon for each application. You can’t overdose when using transdermally as the skin will absorb exactly what it needs. Use twice a day for best results.
Are you vegetarian?
Our bodies make vitamin D when exposed to sunshine. Five to 10 minutes of sun exposure on some or most days of the week to the arms, legs, or back without sunscreen will enable you to make enough of the vitamin. Good food sources of vitamin D include fatty fish (such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon), foods fortified with vitamin D (such as dairy products, soy milk, and cereals), cheese, and egg yolks. Our SVA Vit D products are fully vegetarian – our Vit D is sourched from Sheep Lanolin obtained sustainably and cruely free.
How Much is Enough? 
The recommended dietary dose of vitamin D is 600 IU each day for adults 70 and younger and 800 IU each day for adults over 70. A daily supplement containing 1,000 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D is likely safe for most people. For adults, the risk of harmful effects increases above 4,000 IU per day.
Our SVA Vitamin D transdermal cream contains 3400 iu (International Units) of Vit D3 per gram. This cream is based on an ancient formula from Vaidya’s family tradition used to treat severe cases of Vit D deficiency. In addition, all the formulas contains herbs and other ingredients that deliver and facilitate the absorption of Vitamin D without exerting a load on the internal organs, especially the liver. So when you use one gram of the SVA transdermal cream, your body will be receiving 3400 IU of Vit D3. For practical purposes, this amount approximately equals to 1/4 tsp. You can use a designated spoon/scooper to get an accurate amount each time you use it.
You may apply this cream and gently rub it on the pulse areas of both wrists. Alternately, you may apply it on your armpits. As explained, the armpits’ area contain fatty glands that can facilitate the absorption of Vit D. This is one of the reasons Vaidya also formulated a deodorant that contains Vit D. 
When you are applying the Shea Butter base cream, be sure to ‘melt’ it by massaging it onto your skin, since it has a thicker consistency. 
Measuring the exact dosage of the Vit D roll-on, in terms of Vit D content, is a little more challenging. We suggest you use the transdermal cream in addition to the deodorant.
