In Autumn, temperatures drop, a dry wind replaces the gentle summer breeze as the days slowly get darker and colder and the earth travels away from its source of Agni, or the sun. Our body responds to the autumnal weather by shrinking down circulatory channels – shrotas. The shrotas, physical channels in the body, are given immense importance in Shakha Vansya Ayurveda; the Ayurvedic texts say it clear and loud: shroto mayo purusha, “The whole body is nothing but shrotas.” Why did Vaidya emphasize the shrotas for total health?
The shrotas circulate and deliver nourishment; heat; energy; they carry the dhatu-s or tissues; evacuate toxins; and so much more. Only when these channels are open, and free from acidic toxins, can health be optimal. Only when the channels are open and balanced can nourishment reach deep into the body and can toxins be removed completely from the body. Through the SVA diet and protocols you can learn to support your body by clearing your channels, keeping them warm, and clear and free from seasonal accumulation. In SV Ayurveda, we are very careful to maintain the intelligence in the shrotas which helps determine what to eliminate; how much to eliminate; when to eliminate; what to absorb; how much to absorb; where to deliver things to; when to deliver; how much to deliver.
When the weather gets colder, Vata naturally increases. To keep your physiology in balance, try to have lighter nourishing but timely meals; maintain a regular yogic exercise routine; stick to an early rather than late bedtime; do regular self-massage with a good Vata pacifying oil; have some uplifting down-time activities to un-stress from work.
In addition, an easy daily way to keep things running smoothly and efficiently can be achieved with just a cup of tea! Vaidya Mishra has formulated many balancing teas that help in different ways.
Shroto Shudhi tea is idea for the Fall. Not only does it help clean the channels as its name indicates (“shudhi” = clean, “shroto” = channels), but it also warms them up.

The tea targets channels in the body carrying liquid soma (water soluble materials). This tea helps burn ama (partially digested food material) without aggravating amavisha (reactive toxins sitting in the body).

Do you ever wonder what we did to stay cool before Air Conditioning devices were introduced into our lives?? Perhaps we consumed more sweet juicy fruits and stayed hydrated… But in India they have a beautiful tradition. It involves herbs and specifically Vetiver. It’s a practice that originated in remote villages but is widely used in modern urban homes as well even nowadays in North India. Vetiver grass is woven into mats that are hung on doors and windows to help cool off from stifling summer heat.
Freshly woven Vetiver grass mats not only infuse a delightful cooling aroma to the entire house, but the scented molecules actually carry cooling properties. Vaidya taught us that property-wise vetiver is: sheeta (cooling); snigdha (unctuous or anti-drying); and sugandha (highly aromatic.) Vetiver nurtures the first layer of the skin called udakdhara (water-holding), and penetrates even deeper to the raktadhara (blood layer.) 
In summer, the increased agni in the environment increases the heat in the blood. That’s why we experience more heat in the body and brain. Vetiver aromatically cools off the blood and with regular use can even cool the muscle and fat tissues.
 Vaidya added Aloe Vera to his lotion because it is a famous world-wide known healing plant used to soothe topical burns – specially prized in the hispanic tradition. Water soluble, aloe offers refreshing coolness to the first layer of the skin udakdhara (water holding) and enhances the skin’s luster and complexion  Aloe is also known for cooling the raktadhara (blood holding layer) of the skin as well.  Transdermally, aloe quickly reaches the liver and spleen and detoxifies the liver by its cooling effect.  
 Vaidya Mishra made this lovely summer lotion with active molecules of Aloe and Vetiver to refresh, calm and pacify the dehagni (cellular agni) and pacify bhrajaka (subdosha of pitta dhatu that governs the skin) and sadhak pitta (subdosha that governs the emotions). This is a lovely lotion that can be used on face and body any time of day or night whenever feeling hot.
 Ingredients
“Total Aloe Vetiver Lotion” (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary herbal blend) with Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), Aloe vera, Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), Saffron (Crocus sativus), Flame of forest (Delonix regia), Devil’s Apple (Solanum linnaeanum),Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Gotu kola (Centella asiatica), Brahmi (Bacopa moniera), Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens), Green tea (Camellia sinensis), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Lemon (Citrus limon), Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus), Asoka (Saraca asoca), Shirish bark (Albizzia lebbeck), Sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), White grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), in a base of organic coconut (Cocos nucifera), Grapeseed oil (Vitis vinifera), Vegetable stearic acid, Organic aloe juice, Neem (Azadirachta indica), Kosher vegetable glycerin, Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Emulsifying wax (NF).
Ingredient-Wise!
Aloe Vera: Calms and soothes the skin by its deep cooling effect on rasa (plasma) and rakta (blood.) Highly active form. 
 Vetiver: Sheeta (cooling); Snigdha (unctuous); and Sugandha (cooling aromatic.)  Highly active form.
 Jojoba: Cooling skin lubricant
 Saffron: Best varnya (skin complexion) enhancer. Helps preserve skin color
 Flame of Forest: Enhances intelligence of the skin to fight against sunlight and a varnya (complexion enhancer.)
 Devil’s Apple: Increases the cellular intelligence of skin
 Punarnava: Mobilizes and evacuates toxins from the udakdhara layer (water layer) of the skin. 
 Manjishta: Maintains skin intelligence & pacifies bhrajaka pitta – governing factor of skin easily aggravated by overexposure to sun.
 Turmeric: Fights against inflammation of the skin created by sunlight exposure
 Gotu Kola: Supports collagen synthesis
 Brahmi: Maintains intelligence of the skin
 Nutmeg: Maintains normal skin pigmentation
 Mucuna: Supports dopamine production to maintain coordination between mind and skin (prana and vyana)
 Green Tea: Great anti-oxidant for the skin. Prevents free-radicals (amavisha) from sunlight exposure
 Ashwagandha: Supports tactile nerves of the skin
 Lemon: Checks against excess pigmentation caused by sun exposure
 Indian Sarsaparilla: Acidic toxins (amavisha) released from sweat irritates skin. Cleans sweat and the sweat glands.

Multiple Sclerosis
what could cause it & how to address it

MS TELEPROMPTER
Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system loses its intelligence and begins to attack the protective covering around the nerves, known as the myelin sheath. Some symptoms could be: blurred or double vision; clumsiness or lack of coordination; loss of balance; numbness; tingling or tremors throughout the body and/or extremities; pins and needles sensation in extremieties; numbness or reduced sensation of touch; weakness in the arms or legs; muscle spasms; fatigue and cognitive problems. Bladder problems could also happen, such as excessive urination at night, leaking of urine, persistent urge to urinate or urinary retention. Slurred speech or difficulty swallowing may result, as well as heaviness in the legs, numbness in the face or tongue and difficulty raising the foot. 
While there are instances where modern medicine must be used because pharmaceuticals are needed to treat a crisis or an acute condition, there are also many examples where modern medicine cannot offer enough remedies for the condition being treated. 
A good example is this with MS. And this is true both in the prevention of it and its treatment.
For example, Ayurveda can provide herbs which actually heal both the nerve tissue and the myelin sheath. Modern medicine has no such remedy for this. The pharmaceuticals they provide are aimed at “toning down” the immune system so it stops attacking the myelin sheath.
This approach is lacking on two accounts. First, not much attempt is made to see what is causing the myelin sheath to break down in the first place, and second, there are no medicines on the market which can heal the nerve or the myelin sheath. 
This is where Ayurveda can make a huge difference in the treatment of MS. But before any prescription is written, we have to first identify the hetu, or the underlying cause or causes of the disease, and THEN we give the treatment protocol. And the real truth is, with most diseases, there are many underlying causes. 
So let’s look at some of the causes of MS: what are the some of the things that could burn the myelin sheath? 
  1. Well, for starters, aspartame, the artificial sweetener. It’s one of the leading causes of MS as it is famous for burning the myelin sheath. Many people have had their MS miraculously go away when they stopped consuming aspartame.
  2. Monosodium Glutamate, which is also known as MSG. Glutamate is an amino acid which is the neurotransmitter responsible for excitatory signals in the brain. However, its production in the body is tightly controlled since in excess it is highly toxic to brain cells and can cause them to die. Studies have been shown that MS patients have higher levels of glutamate in their cerebrospinal fluid during relapses of the disease and elevated glutamate levels in some types of MS brain lesions.
  
   Don’t be fooled if MSG isn’t on the label of the food as it comes under several names, such as “hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, protein isolate, soy protein isolate, whey protein isolate, maltodextrin, malt extract, sodium caseinate, modified food starch and soy protein concentrate”.
3. Parasites: The ancient texts of Ayurveda listed various parasites that could actually eat the myelin sheath. I personally have had several patients develop MS after going to an exotic island or foreign country and begin to develop MS symptoms after contracting a parasite.
4. Heavy Metals: Mercury is extremely hot and piercing, and easily burns holes in the myelin sheath and is also responsible for a lot of the MS we are seeing nowadays. Mercury is found in some immunizations, the flu shot, mercury/silver dental fillings, certain species of fish, in some types of air pollution, especially coming from coal-fired power plants, household fluorescent light bulbs and thermostats. Gold mining also releases over 11 tons of mercury into the environment each year as mercury is released when gold is heated to separate it from mined ore. And it has been estimated by some environmental groups that old abandoned gold mines in California continue to release mercury even though they have been closed for over one hundred years.
5. Lowfat diets: I’ve had patients develop MS after they were following diets which were too low in fats, containing no milk, ghee, butter or cholesterol. Remember this very important fact: the nerve tissue and the myelin sheath are made of cholesterol, so a diet too deficient in fat can actually dry up the brain and shrivel up the nerve tissue. And it’s even worse if this low fat diet is accompanied by intense aerobic exercising, since aerobic exercise burns fat.
6. Rushing through the day, going to bed late, and burning the candle at both ends aggravates Vata, whose main attribute inside the body is drying. If we get too much Vata, or too much drying within the body, then we can dry out the nerve tissue as well. 
7. Electromagnetic Radiation/Frequencies (EMR’s and EMF’s): Prana, the vital life force, the cosmic energy which permeates not only the Universe, but is delivered to all the organs and cells of our bodies, is composed of soma, agni and marut. Soma is the vibration from the moon, agni is from the sun’s rays and marut is that element which governs the movement of soma and agni.
The EMR’s and EMF’s from Wi-Fi, cell phones and computers mix in and pollute the prana as it enters the adhipati marma point at the top of the head, and follows the same path that the prana follows, which is down the spine through the shushumna nadi and from there outwards to the arms and legs, the organs, glands and the entire cellular system. So now this polluted prana is being delivered throughout the whole body, wreaking havoc in its path.
I had a patient who developed MS after working under high tension wires all day on her horse farm. Once we had her move her horses away from the wires to another part of the farm her MS totally cleared up. It has been over 10 years now and it never returned.
Now you can see that once you identify the underlying cause, then and only then can you begin treatment: So, depending on what we find in that particular patient we give remedies to either clean the nerve tissue, to kill the parasites, or to chelate the heavy metals. We teach the patients how to include good fats in their diets, such as ghee, milk and other dairy products, we teach them about the 3 doshas, which are known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha and how to keep them balanced. The three elements found outside the body in nature are soma, agni and marut, but once they come into the body are known as Kapha, Pitta and Vata respectively.
Since MS is an autoimmune disease, we also treat the various parts of the immune system which have lost their intelligence, which are the friendly bacteria in the gut, the liver and bone marrow. 
 We regrow the friendly bacteria using very high quality probiotics and/or yogurt, buttermilk and takra. 
We clean the liver from all the toxins it has taken on over a lifetime. And using specific herbs, we cool down the heat in the liver and use other herbs to regenerate liver cells if they have been damaged by cooking with refined vegetable oils such as Canola oil, sunflower, mustard seed, safflower, margarine and cheap olive oils. Sometimes we have to give transdermal glutathione, CoQ10 and alpha lipoic acid, all developed by my teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra, and based on food, so that they retain their original prana found in nature. These are 3 of the main antioxidants in the body, responsible for quenching the free radicals that the environmental toxins cause, but in this modern era, since there are over 80,000 chemicals in the environment and most of us are harboring hundreds of these toxins in our blood at all times, these antioxidants are always running low.
And we have herbs and foods which can clean the bone marrow, the third part of the immune system, where the immune system cells are born. Don’t forget, lots of environmental toxins and pharmaceuticals make a beeline into your bone marrow, so in this modern age most of us need to address this highly important tissue since toxins sitting in there can trigger autoimmune diseases, such as MS.
And finally, one of the most important tools we have in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis are the very exotic and wonderful herbs Dr. Mishra was able to get from India for our patients who have not only MS, but other demyelinating diseases as well. These amazing herbs can actually heal both the nerve tissue and its covering, the myelin sheath. I’ll never forget how excited I was when we finally unpacked these herbs for the first time after waiting several years to bring them to America. 
I will always be grateful to Vaidya Mishra for teaching me how to treat MS in the correct way and for going through all the trouble to source all the herbs from India that we use to treat the many underlying causes of MS in our patients.

Some things are meant to last forever, others not. Ancient cultures honored seasonal, annual, weekly and daily rituals that marked the passage of time. These rituals were not only reminders for man to live in sync with the world at large, in keeping with the rhythms and the cycles of flowing time. They were much more. But we have forgotten. We have lost the teachings of our ancestors. With the advent of technology we no longer rest or wake up when the sun sets or rises; we do not structure our activities in tune with the waning and waxing of the moon; we do whatever we want anytime we want! Just because we can. And it’s alright. But the cycles of time are not meant to restrict or restrain us, rather to help us grow bigger healthier and happier. Our bodies are made of the same elements as the world we live in. The world of the pancha-maha-bhutas that is regulated by the sun and the moon – the markers of the cycles of time daily and monthly. When we realign ourselves with the sun and the moon, we will also thrive effortlessly like Mother Nature – like the pomegrenate tree that blossoms in the spring and yields fruit in Autumn, effortlessly….
Ayurveda teaches us in great depth about seasonal rituals to balance mental, emotional, physical health. Vaidya Mishra not only taught these ancient precepts, but he enlivened them in great details adapting them to our modern needs and culture so we could live more ancient ayurveda today. Constant fear of the unknown, chronic anxiety, ongoing fatigue resulting from pushing the body and mind for more work, or to keep it engaged and distracted, can result in dis-ease when left unaddressed. Stress has been scientifically identified as one – if not THE – major leading cause of severe health problems. What happens in our bodies when we are stressed out? The body needs to decide whether to “fight” or to run away from the situation. For either scenario in its attempt to manage things 2 chemicals are released:
You can see the side-effects associated with either situation as illustrated in the graph above. Yes – stress is a natural daily occurrence – stuff happens! We run late, things break, people are in a funky mood and misunderstand you, etc. And our bodies are made to handle and recover from such events. But when we have high predictable levels of stress day-in-and-out and we don’t do or are unable to do anything to correct the situation, our bodies bear the brunt but eventually give up. Here are some ailments modern medicine recognizes have their origin in chronic stress.
With time, the body is less and less able to cope and process the stress. It runs out of steam. It is unable to adapt to stressful situations. And it starts to break down. That’s the key term: adapt. Enter Ashwaghanda: biggest best adaptogenic herb cherished in Ayurveda and recognized in Western science and medicine. Ayurveda offers so many divine herbs and remedies to help cope with stress. In this newsletter we focus on Ashwaghanda because it offers that unique property: adaptogenicity!
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is a world-famous adaptogenic herb that helps us cope with stress, especially mental and physical stress. Ashwagandha is also a wonderful herb for improving stamina. In fact, ashwa is the Sanskrit word for ‘horse’; and gandha is the word for ‘smell’. Another meaning of gandha is ‘essential character’. It is the essential character of horses to be strong. They possess great endurance and can easily cope with ever increasing workloads. Ashwagandha strengthens the nervous system and gives us the ability to withstand the ever-increasing demands of life.
Rasayana and Balya
Ashwagandha possesses a wonderful rasayana property. The Charak Samhita defines rasayana: yad jarabhyadi nashanam tad rasayanam (that which slows aging and removes imbalances is rasayana.)
In addition, ashwagandha also has the balya prabhava (specific ultimate effect). This word denotes that it gives bala (strength). In Ayurveda, bala can signify many kinds of strength: mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, immunological, and reproductive/sexual. Ashwagandha mainly gives mental and physical strength, as well as sexual stamina.

Ashwagandha Contraindicated for High Pitta & Amavisha
Ashwagandha is contraindicated for the pitta physiology, especially if there is a lot of amavisha (reactive toxins) in the body. The reason is that it has both an ushna guna (warming physical effect) and ushna virya (heating potency). Ironically, high pitta people are often drawn to ashwagandha because they constantly put more and more stress on themselves.
Oral intake of Ashwagandha is not be the herb of choice for such driven people, when compared to herbs, foods and lifestyle choices that give more soma (cooling and nurturing to the body). Sometimes, making priority choices about what races you want to run is the best way to get rid of excess mental stress.
Ashwagandha Transdermal Cream for All Body Types
Transdermal delivery of herbs through topical application is a chief component of Vaidya Mishra’s advanced/alternate delivery system, because whatever goes ON your body goes IN your body! This cream delivers the balya prabhava (strengthening quality) of ashwagandha without the ushna guna (heating quality) and ushna virya (heating potency). Gunas are physical properties. Pulse Diagnosis
or the
Ancient Science
of
Total Health Assessment

The ancient doctors of India had a holistic understanding of human nature. Based on that, they interpreted ailments and also made recommendations. But how were they able to see into the root cause of diseases, what gave them the power to understand and heal without access to any modern technology and tools of medical diagnostics and evaluation? The answer lies in “nadi vigyan” or “pulse diagnosis.” This allows the Ayurvedic practitioner a window into what’s going on inside the human body, a very deep picture of the body’s processes which usually we don’t have access to.  
Many people don’t understand exactly what we feel in the pulse. Well, here in the Western world doctors and nurses basically feel the rate and the rhythm of the heartbeat in the pulse. Just these two things. This means they can feel how fast the heart is beating, how many times a minute, and if the heartbeat is regular or not.
While this information is extremely important to have at one’s fingertips, Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis goes much further and provides us with information that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to obtain through various diagnostic tests. 
Let’s take a look at some of the things we can find in the pulse.  
First of all, we don’t just come down with a serious disease overnight. But instead, we go through many stages of a disease process as we work our way towards a disease we can name. More specifically, according to mainstream Ayurveda, 6 stages of pathogenesis. But as my teacher Vaidya Mishra taught, there are actually 9 stages. 
In the first two stages of the disease process, some things could be going out of balance, but there won’t be any symptoms just yet. But as these imbalances start to spread and go deeper into the body, in the third and fourth stages you start to develop symptoms. But no disease can be diagnosed just yet.  
We’re all familiar with this — we have tons of symptoms, yet when we get blood work or other tests they come back normal. Which, on the one hand is good, because we don’t want to be entertaining any disease, but on the other hand since the doctors can’t find anything on the tests they might make you feel like nothing is wrong with you, or they either treat it incorrectly or don’t treat it at all. Which leaves you feeling pretty frustrated and hopeless.
Don’t forget, doctors are trained to diagnose and treat disease, so unless you fall into that category, many times there is nothing they have to offer you.  
So then if you let these imbalances continue on, they will turn into a disease in the fifth and sixth stage. In the 7th and 8th stages morbid symptoms become totally irreversible and result in eventual death in the final stage. 
But wouldn’t it be great if these early stages could have been picked up sooner and something done about them to halt the progress to the 5th and 6th stage? This is what preventive medicine is all about.  
Well, this is where pulse diagnosis comes in. It can detect the early stages before it blossoms into a disease. For example, we can detect when the liver is toxic and not functioning well, and fix it, instead of allowing it to spiral out of control turning into diabetes a few years down the road.
We can feel when the thyroid is struggling many years before it shows up on blood work. This is why I decided to write a book about it, called Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda, because it is so much easier to fix the thyroid when it is first getting weak, rather than when it has been damaged by a disease process because it was ignored for too long. 
In fact, it is much easier to prevent any disease than to react to it once you have it and try to reverse something that was years in the making. But this is where modern medicine falls short. They have wonderful diagnostic tools to detect when you have a disease and are able to put a name to the disease, and they have some amazing medicines which can suppress the symptoms of that disease, but they don’t really have any ways of preventing it from happening in the first place. That’s why so many people are coming down with serious illnesses, and the rates of these diseases are getting higher and higher with every passing year.
So here is what we can feel in the pulse:  
We feel the pulse with three fingers: the index finger picks up the information about Vata, the middle finger picks up what is going on with Pitta, and the ring finger detects any and all information we need to know about Kapha.
Vata, Pitta and Kapha are elements which are found in our bodies, but they correspond to the greater elements or 3 tattwas that make up life as we know it in the universe: Soma, Agni, and Marut. Soma correspond to kapha in our bodies, Agni to Pitta, and Vata is expressed by Marut. This is the relationship between micro and macrocosm through the elements. Vaidya Mishra gave beautiful in-depth lectures about this and you can study more here. Soma, Agni, and Marut are the directors behind the scenes that have their expression in our bodies as doshas. The doshas in turn are in charge of running and managing all of the bodies’ processes, but since we can’t see them, they are not discussed in Western medicine at all. Which is not so great because it turns out that most of the disease processes have their very early stages in imbalances in these three doshas, as they are called, and if you can detect them early on, they are fairly easy to reverse. If you don’t nip them in the bud they eventually take you down the path towards disease.
Vata in nature is Marut – the element of movement, quickness, dryness, coldness, roughness and lightness. So, for example, while we want movement in the body, such as movement of the blood through the arteries or the movement of food through the digestive tract, we don’t want too much movement where we can become hyper, anxious and nervous as too many thoughts move through our brain which can create worries, anxieties and depression.
Pitta represents the fire element or Agni, so it’s mainly found in the digestive organs so that they can cook the food when it comes in. Now, while it’s good to be able to break the food down for proper absorption into our cells, we don’t want so much heat in the digestive tract which can cause, say, an ulcer.
And Kapha represents Soma: coldness, slowness, unctuousness, stability and sweetness. So while it’s great to have a sweet personality, we don’t want to become so sweet that our blood sugar goes high and causes diabetes.
The good news is that you can feel the amounts of these 3 doshas in the pulse, and the specific areas they affect in the body, which are called the sub-doshas.
So very quickly, Vata has 5 subdoshas, affecting the movement of thoughts through the mind, the upward flow of energy in the throat and the area around the thyroid gland, the clockwise flow of food through the stomach, the downward flow of the food in the intestinal region and the movement and circulation of our blood.  
Pitta controls the hot organs, so the 5 subdoshas of pitta give you an indication of how the stomach, liver, heart, eyes and skin, all pitta organs are doing.
And the subdoshas of watery and cold kapha give you information on the lubrication of the cerebrospinal fluid, the salivary glands, the joints, the lubrication of the stomach and information on the lower spine.
Each of the 3 fingers can detect the subdoshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha in the pulse. The index finger detects the pulsation of the 5 Vata subdoshas, the middle finger gives information on the 5 Pitta subdoshas and the ring finger lets you know the health of the 5 kapha subdoshas.

To make things even more complicated, but also very interesting, we can detect the health of the 7 tissues, which are the blood plasma, the blood tissue, the muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and reproductive fluids. So we can detect if the bone tissue is weak and fix it so the patient doesn’t develop osteoporosis, or if the bone marrow is holding onto too many environmental toxins, pushing the patient into an autoimmune situation.
But with SVA, Vaidya Mishra taught us to go even further into the 8th and the 9th layers: the 8th for quantity and quality of ojas, and the 9th for assessing the “light of the soul.” Poetic as this last level might sound, it is actual data that helps steer the patient into the right path of their healing based on their soul’s “sattva.” This is why some patients are ready to undertake the journey of healing, while others might not. This is also where you discern deeper understanding of their ailments rooted in past karmic events. 
Back on the physical levels, we can further detect the information on the body’s physical channels: channels that carry tears, sweat, lymphatic fluids, bowel movement, urine and so on. These channels can shrink, get inflamed, become clogged or hard, all of which we can feel in the pulse.
Which means we can tell if the person is developing hardening of the arteries, and if so, clean them out and pull the calcium deposits out of them, so they can revert back to the elasticity they had when the person was in their 20’s. We can even tell if a person is eating too much tofu and clogging all the body’s channels. Many people think of tofu as a health food, but the pulse proves otherwise — it is so hard to digest that it just clogs all the channels, so much so that my teacher coined the term, “tofu pulse” when he felt the pulse of someone who had been eating a lot of tofu and as a result had severe clogging of their physical channels.
And this is very exciting: we can feel the four types of toxins: ama, amavisha, garavisha and electromagnetic toxins.  
Ama is a residue which gets stuck in the body’s physical channels whenever the food doesn’t digest well. This can happen if someone’s digestion is weak and/or if the food is too heavy. So instead of absorbing into the bloodstream after being properly broken down in the digestive tract, it only partially breaks down and remains stuck in the initial channel, which is the digestive tract, and creates a cold, clogging residue that just sits there.  
Then this ama eventually rots and ferments and forms a very hot reactive and acidic toxin called amavisha which, due to its heat and acidity, can pave the way for autoimmune diseases and cancer.
Garavisha are the chemical toxins from outside the body, such as air pollution, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and nutraceuticals, which, also due to their very hot nature, can cause autoimmune diseases and cancer. 
And electromagnetic toxins come from using computers, smart phones, smart meters, cell phone towers and other forms of man-made radiation, such as X-rays.
It’s interesting to note that each of these different toxins has its own unique feel, so that you can detect the types of toxins that particular person is holding onto, and even better, you can tell where they have travelled — to which tissue, or organ or gland.
This means we can feel how the flu shot ingredients wind up sitting in the bone marrow, or the effects of bad oils like refined vegetable oils and canola oil — how they damage the liver, or how the birth control pill is causing blood clots in the leg.
We can also tell the strength of the body, the rhythm of the heartbeat and the volume of the blood, and if a person is dehydrated or not. And a really good pulse diagnostician can tell the health of the mind and even the various qualities of the soul.
So now you can see that the pulse diagnosis in Ayurveda is vastly different from what you may have thought. This gives us a window into the flow of prana, the life energy in each person, where we can detect very early stages of a disease process and reverse them, so no disease develops. 
Or, if a disease has already developed, we can still detect all the underlying imbalances that led up to it and fix them, one by one, even if the person is on a prescription drug, so that maybe we can help them to lower the dose of the drug, or even come off the medicine if the body is still able to heal itself once the imbalances are addressed.
I think you can now see how extremely important pulse diagnosis is for both the practitioner and the patient, and how it can give you valuable information that no other form of diagnostic tool can detect.

Why Spices for Kids?
We mistakenly think of spices as flavoring agents or simply as being sharp and pungent – “I don’t like spicy food!” Ayurveda gives us the science (not the kind that gets recalled as Vaidya Mishra would say!) for why and how spices are essential to every meal in addition to bringing flavor for balance. We learn that spices come in a full spectrum of flavors connected to distinct balancing properties: the taste is an indication of its action. THE AUTISTIC BRAIN
SV Ayurveda vs New Research
~ Dr Marianne Teitelbaum
Dr. Mishra was one of India’s greatest Ayurvedic practitioners. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of over 700 herbs. He came to the West (Europe & America) to bring this ancient priceless knowledge to us who need it most nowadays. I was very fortunate to be able to sit with him who was my teacher and mentor for 20 years, as we tackled all kinds of health problems that patients presented with.
When I first began my studies with him, I asked if he could first address all the autism I was seeing because no one seemed to understanding the sudden incidence of it in the population and therefore no one knew exactly what to do about it. So for the next several years I would bring in children who were diagnosed with autism, he would feel their pulse to determine the underlying causes and early on he developed a protocol for them to follow and eventually got all the herbs from India that we needed to make the formulas for these children.
Later in this discussion I will give you more information about our approach, but let’s first learn some basic facts about autism — what’s causing it, why the cases are at epidemic levels now while they were much lower, almost non-existent before 1990, and what we need to do about it. I will present the latest research from all of the great medical institutions here in the United States and show you how we would treat everything using our Ayurvedic perspective, which dovetails well with what the research is showing.
So let’s start at the very beginning. Autism is a devastating condition that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Symptoms appear during the early childhood years and can be mild to severe, creating what is known as the autistic spectrum.
Autism can affect children of all ages and presents with lack of spoken language. Sometimes the child just stops talking after they have been talking for some time or some children never put words together in the first place. Or there could be repetitive words or motor mannerisms such as head shaking, twirling, etc.
There is little or no eye contact with others, fixation on objects or parts of objects, lack of make- believe play and little or no interest in peer relationships.
The history of autism shows that it was extremely rare in previous years. When I first opened my practice in the early 1980’s I was told that I would probably see about one case of autism in the entire history of my career. This was true in the early years as I had never seen a case or known anyone with autism. But by 1990 the rates of autism began skyrocketing and children with autism started streaming in my office almost every week.
At first, not much research was done on autism because it was so rare. But then there was an 8-fold increase in autistic cases beginning in 1990 and the rates have continued to rise to the point where they are now affecting 1 in 59 children in the United States, according to the CDC.
So what is responsible for this huge increase in the rates of autism? As of now, researchers are looking at genetic causes, and have come up with some possible ideas. But if it were just from genetic causes then the rates wouldn’t have suddenly skyrocketed in 1990. We’ll discuss this a little later.
So here’s what the researchers know so far. They are mapping the brain with two diagnostic tools: magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional MRI (fMRI). With MEG technology, sensors are put on the head and magnetic fields are being read by a machine as the patient is asked to do different things, such as lift a finger, imagine something, talk, etc. The functional MRI measures and maps the brain activity and blood flow changes when the patient is asked to do certain things, such as tapping their fingers, listening to someone speak, for example, so they can pinpoint areas of the brain connected with autistic behaviors.
Here is some of what they found: First they discovered with is called synaptic dysfunction in the autistic brain. A synapse is the tiny junction between 2 neurons or brain cells consisting of a minute gap across which impulses pass. Our billions of brain cells communicate with each other every second of every day as messages are transported continually across these gaps. With very serious brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, and Parkinson’s Disease, the brain degenerates causing people to lose many of the synaptic brain connections. You can see this on an MRI — it actually looks like the brain has shrunken down dramatically in size.
HOWEVER…a major brain tissue study performed by neuroscientists at Columbia University Medical Center in 2014 made a shocking discovery: THE AUTISTIC CHILDREN DID NOT HAVE A LOSS OF BRAIN SYNAPSES!!! THEY HAD TOO MANY BRAIN SYNAPSES!!!
The autistic brain can thus be overloaded and overstimulated by too many brain synapses firing all day long. It’s like trying to understand 10 people talking to you at the same time, creating a brain overload. This explains why these children shun people and noise in general — it’s like a cacophony of noise that is just too much for them to process. What then causes this problem with too many synapses? Let’s look a little further:
When babies are born they possess all of the brain cells (neurons) that they will ever have throughout their whole life. But babies aren’t born with the brain connections, or the synapses.
The brain cells are all there but the connections haven’t been made yet. All babies go from no synapses at birth to trillions of synaptic connections the first year of their life. By age 6 months lots of synapses are made. But by age 2 the baby’s brain ends up making TOO MANY SYNAPTIC CONNECTIONS! So why do babies make more connections than they need? Researchers don’t really know. But after a baby’s brain makes all these massive connections in their first two years of life, the excess unwanted synapses start to die off! This is called Synaptic Pruning — much like a bush that needs to be pruned. So from age 2 to 20 the human brain will actually prune about 50% of the excess synapses that were formed in the baby’s first years of life.
This is our brain’s way of getting rid of too many synapses leading to overstimulation. But researchers discovered that the brains of children with autism did not undergo normal pruning during childhood and adolescence. So the autistic brain kept the majority of the unwanted and unnecessary synaptic connections, which can lead to autistic behaviors.
Researchers found a genetic abnormality can cause an overproduction of a compound called mTOR. mTOR blocks normal synaptic pruning, so the more mTOR a person has, the less synaptic pruning is able to occur. The more synapses a child has, the more overloaded their brain can become.
So the next questions if, is there anything that can inhibit mTOR so the brain can prune in the way that it needs to? A 2019 study reported that an antioxidant known as Sulforaphane inhibits mTOR. This is a sulfur compound found in only one classification of food known as cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and radishes. These are the only foods on earth which contain sulforaphane. All these vegetables contain varying amounts of sulforaphane, but broccoli has by far the most compared to the other vegetables.
Sulforaphane crosses the blood-brain barrier thus it has the potential to heal right at the source of the brain-pruning probe by suppressing the mTOR.
This pruning problem is not the only cause of synaptic malfunctioning in the brain. Independent studies by Yale, UCLA and Johns Hopkins have all found yet another common genetic abnormality linked to autism. This affects genes that produce a protein called CNTNAP2. CNTNAP2 is a protein that causes dysfunctional synaptic misfiring when it is defective, kind of like a radio that is tuned to the wrong station and you’re just hearing static. Coupled with too many brain synapses would be like multiple radios all tuned to the wrong station creating static.
Now, in some autistic cases, there is a decrease in autistic symptoms when the child has a high fever. For many years parents have reported that their child’s autism dramatically improved during a high fever. At first it was considered only anecdotal evidence, then in 2007 researchers at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health published in the journal Pediatrics that in many cases a fever episode can in fact significantly improve the signs and symptoms of autism. 
When the fever goes away, the signs and symptoms return. However, it is not sustainable to have a high fever one’s entire life just so the symptoms of autism go away. So for the past decade researchers have been studying why the signs and symptoms of autism go away dramatically during a high fever. Year after year and study after study researchers could not figure out why so many cases of autism improve during a high fever.
Then in 2014 the researchers from Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts General Hospital finally unlocked the fever mystery. They found that it’s not the actual fever that lessens the symptoms, but the way our body protects our brain from the fever.
When a child gets a fever the internal thermostat ramps way up to kill the pathogens their body is fighting. But the body innately knows that if a fever gets too high it can damage the brain, so special proteins are released inside the brain to protect it from fever damage.
These special brain proteins are called Heat Shock Proteins and their job is to protect our brain fro heat shock caused by a high fever. So during a fever you have an extra rush of heat shock proteins which protect the brain. They found out that they also help to make the synaptic brain connections work much better, which helps the autistic symptoms go away. But then the symptoms come back once the fever goes away.
So now the question is: is there anything that has the potential to activate Heat Shock Proteins but without needing to have a high fever? And the answer is: Sulforaphane, the same antioxidant found in cruciferous vegetables.
A study done in 2014, the first of it kind, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial took a group of patients with moderate to severe autism and gave half of them sulforaphane from broccoli and the other half took a placebo. The symptoms improved dramatically in the patients who took the sulforaphane.
Another study was then performed to show if broccoli and other vegetables should be given. Supplement companies have made sulforaphane, but a 2006 study tested the supplements and found that the sulforaphane could not be detected in any of the supplements tested. So it is important to give your child the actual broccoli — organic, without the 50 pesticides which are usually sprayed on it!
While eating broccoli to get this important antioxidant, it is important to remember that other factors come into play here, or else everyone would be cured of autism by just eating more broccoli.
Oxidative stress in the brain is another issue: free radicals in the brain cause oxidation which is defined as an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants which can result in cellular damage, known as oxidative damage..
Neurons in the brain are extremely sensitive to attacks by destructive free radicals. Oxidative damage can cause chronic inflammation. In the brain tissue of patients with autism you will find high levels of inflammation in their brains. Spinal taps have found up to 200 times the levels of inflammatory-causing compounds.
Here’s the problem: our brain is a free radical factory. More free radicals are produced in our brain than anywhere else in our body. It’s the mitochondria which produces the free radicals. Mitochondria provide energy and nothing requires more energy resources than our brain. And the free radicals are formed from the normal functioning of the mitochondria. 
So if there are lots of free radicals being produced at all times by the mitochondria and the brain is loaded with free radicals, why don’t we all have autism?
The answer is simple: It’s because of the antioxidants! Antioxidants protect our tissues, cells and DNA from damage caused by free radicals. Here’s how it works: a stable atom has two electrons. But a free radical has only one electron, so it steals an electron from the stable atom which creates oxidation, or oxidative stress. Antioxidants have spare electrons so they can donate one to the free radicals thus quenching it without harming any of our atoms.
Now this is very important: The main antioxidant that protects our brain from free radicals and known as the “Mother of All Antioxidants,” is called glutathione. In the non-autistic brain glutathione is able to clear free radicals out of the brain before they have a chance to cause problems. In an autistic brain, however, there is now evidence that the child may have chronically low levels of glutathione.
Oxidative stress tends to occur in the brain regions that are involved in speech and auditory processing, social behavior, memory and sensory and motor coordination.
Why would a child have chronically low levels of glutathione? The answer should be obvious: from over-exposure to chemicals which themselves cause free radicals combined with a diet lacking in antioxidants. This combination wipes out whatever glutathione the child may have. 
This is what Vaidya and I found in the pulses of all the children we saw. Vaidya always told me that the amounts of toxins a four-year-old had in their pulse would have normally taken about 70 years to accumulate.
On top of that we found out that many of the autistic children we had treated had genetic problems, such as MTHFR, Glutathione-S-transferase gene, reducedOF-carrier transcobalamin II, catechol-0-methyltransferase. These genes protect our brain from oxidative stress. A child with these genetic issues can have lower levels of glutathione and higher amounts of free radicals as a result. 
We quickly realized that a perfect storm had developed: the child was given way too many pharmaceuticals in the early years in the form of vaccines, steroids, asthma medications, antibiotics, and acid reflux medicines combined with a diet of foods lacking good antioxidants producing low levels of antioxidants and high levels of free radicals in their brains. And later when we finally had a chance to test their DNA, we saw that just about all of them had one or more of the genetic defects previously described, which prevented them from making glutathione in the first place.
In addition, in the early 1980’s researchers found that aluminum, found in underarm deodorants, aluminum pots and pans, and certain brands of antacids, was a potent neurotoxin. Much research since then has been done on this very fact. So since then everyone stopped using those products, but unfortunately aluminum is now found in most of the childhood vaccines.
Another mystery was why did the rate of autism skyrocket after 1989? One factor most people point to is that the vaccine schedule shot up from 11 shots per child to over 70 shots starting in 1989, flooding the child’s brain with tons of chemicals and heavy metals previous generations had never been exposed to.
Once Vaidya Mishra analyzed all the autistic children he immediately went to work, making formulas to fix the genetic pathways in the liver that were down in the children — these herbs can actually allow the liver to make more glutathione again. He even developed transdermal glutathione and brought in all the herbs fro India to heal the brain: herbs for speech delays, herbs that wake up the brain and herbs that calm down a hyperactive brain. He developed anti-inflammatory transdermal creams to put right on the areas where the nerves exit the spine, and also made formulas to chelate the heavy metals out of the brain. We also experimented with different yogurt starters and probiotic cultures to provide the best possible probiotics for the children, since the probiotic cultures in the gut make the vast majority of the neurotransmitters for the brain.
All the pharmaceuticals I just mentioned: the vaccines, antibiotics, steroids, antacid medications and asthma medications destroy this friendly bacteria. Don’t forget the importance of the friendly bacteria as they have been described as the “brain of the brain” by Vaidya Mishra’s father, Vaidya Kameshwar Mishra 60 years before we caught on to that reality here in the West!
Vaidya Mishra also cooked many of the “brain herbs” in ghee since the fat in the ghee delivers those herbs directly into the brain, across the blood-brain barrier. We also instruct the parents how to feed their children healthy wholesome diets filled with lots of antioxidant-rich foods.
So you can see how modern research is now able to determine the underlying causes of autism. The best answer is to prevent it in the first pace. I sincerely hope that in the future doctors will test all newborn babies to see if they have any of these gene abnormalities which would increase their likelihood of becoming autistic. And if they do demonstrate these genetic defects, then they should decrease the vaccination schedule, eliminating the vaccines for the mild childhood diseases and spacing out the very important ones, which will prevent an onslaught of free radical formation which comes from giving too many shots at once. And parents, always be mindful of the fact that you must replenish the friendly bacteria in the gut after taking vaccines, antibiotics or any other medication that might deplete them.

Protect, Soothe, Refresh and Rejuvenate your Eyes 
It’s summer and it’s hot! The increased heat in the environment impacts our bodies and minds. Some parts more than others. Why? In Ayurveda, we read that “Chakchu,” the eyes, are a predominantly “agneya” or fiery organ, characterized by transformational energy. Through the eyes, we not only see, but we also “cook” or transform what we see into information and experience. So the heat of the summer is wont to increase imbalance in agneya organs, such as the eyes. However, there is a lot more than just temperature increase that we should consider. Our modern culture is also very much an agneya or fiery culture, driven by electric and electronic power, bombarding our eyes with information and radiation. Have you noticed how in the past decade, our day-to-day lives, and our health, have become so dependent on EMF devices? Do you ever stop to wonder what that dependence is doing to our bodies?
How it is affecting it, for the better or the worse? And what that might mean for us in ayurvedic terms? Ayurveda is an ancient science, but its pertinence lies in its ability to address our most current problems and health issues. Overexposure to EMF devices and radiation is our most burning (pun intended!) issue in this day and age! 
Ayurveda is as secular as it gets, because it knows that nothing under the sun is inherently good or bad, except that we make it so. It’s all about balance. In SVA terms it is about maintaining a happy marriage between soma, agni, and marut, so that the dosha-s in the body, the regulatory principles of functioning, also maintain a harmonious working relationship. This is the key. 
What does this mean in terms of the health of our eyes in this EMF age? Exactly this: that all agneya aspects of our physiology, the organs that carry more agneya or transformative power (eyes, pancreas, liver, etc), receive even more agni nowadays, and are therefore at a risk of overdosing on agni, not getting the chance to cool off and cool down, and literally burning out! 
You know what this means. We stare at our smart device to read the latest news online – who still reads paperbacks and newspapers? We log into our virtual cloud space to work online; pick up yet another device to attend to work and communicate virtually; eat foods prepared in electric fryers or heated in micro-waves; further relax by watching online shows, or even work-out with online interactive devices! Hours on end staring and interacting with electronic screens and devices that emit heat, electricity, and electromagnetic waves. And disrupting our sleep/activity cycle because of the availability of light/electricity that allows us to stay later than the body would like to. Our physical eyes are not equipped to see it, but all these devices operate by sending out EMF waves, that bombard our organic flesh-and-blood bodies with electronic magnetic micro-waves. Our bodies, and the entire environment, for that matter, is getting an excess of electrical heat and waves. Things are wont to change, and not necessarily for the good given our obsession for more technology. 
What to do? We really have no other choice but to care for our eyes on a daily basis. EMF (electro-magnetic field) and EMR (electro-magnetic radiation) in particular give a lot of extra stress and strain on the physical eyes, especially on the optic nerves. Watching TV and being on the computer for even long stretches of time pollutes the nadis (vibrational channels) of the eyes. The EMF charge of these electronic devices disrupts the flow of pranic energy in our eyes. The corrupt synthetic vibrations of EMF/EMR first impact the vibrational channels of the eyes and then further impact the optic nerves and functioning of the eyes. 
In a nutshell, EMF ‘sucks up’ the soma (cooling lunar vibrational energy) out of the eyes. Soma is the balancing factor for Agni (fire) and Marut (circulating energy). When the soma of the eyes gets reduced, you can experience redness, irritatation, and dryness. Less soma also means the roop (countenance) of the eyes becomes narrower and more constricted in appearance. When circulation is further impaired – the micro-circulatory channels dry up and shrink. If you are not following a particularly balanced diet, if you are delaying sleep, or over-exerting in general, then chances are your eyes will be more prone to losing their luster, look tired, and get puffy. To address all this, let’s look at Vaidya Mishra’s Soma Netra Eye Drops in more detail. 
Soma Netra Eye Drops with Organic Rose  
Vaidya Mishra was personally extremely pleased with his eyedrops. He call this formula Soma Netra Eye Drops with Organic Rose.  He formulated it to cool and pacify alochak pitta and instantly restore freshness to tired eyes. All of Vaidya’s new formulas were inspired by a patient in need. He made these drops for a friend who was having constant dry eyes and eye sties. Nothing he did was working. He was desperate. Vaidya made the drops and gave him a bottle. It worked on his eyes like a charm. Then he sent it out to friends and colleagues and got nothing but positive feedback. They all urged me to make these drops available to all SVA followers. Here’s what Vaidya put in the formula. 
The main ingredient in the eye drops is a seed called Chakchusya. Chakchu in Sanskrit means ‘eye’. Ayusha means ‘healthy life span’. Thus, chakchusya (chakchu + ayusha) means ‘which enhances the health and longevity of the eyes.’

Let us see what two lines from the Dhanvantari Nighanthu says about Chakchusya:
Cakṣuṣyā – ‘the seed’. Drk – ‘vision or sight’. Prasādā – ‘gives clarity to the vision or sight’.
Himā – ‘cooling’. Kaṣāyā – ‘astringent’. Viṣaṁ – ‘toxins.’ Sthāvarajaṁgamam – ‘environmental toxins’.
To summarize the verse, it says that: this seed (cakṣuṣyā) cools the eyes, helps remove inner and outer toxins, and gives clarity to the vision. 
How to use the Some Netra Drops?
Directions: Place 1-2 drops of the liquid in each eye with the dropper. Keep the dropper away from the eyes. Do not touch to the eyes or any other surface. Repeat as needed one or more time during the day and once before going to sleep at night. (Do not use more than four times per day.) Keep in a cool dry place and avoid exposure to sunlight and extreme temperatures. It’s highly recommended to refrigerate after opening, as we do not using any synthetic preservative which would destroy the pranic energy of the formula. If you do not refrigerate it, make sure you keep it in a cool, dark place. For best results, use this product up to 90 days – maximum – after opening.
Ingredients: Total Soma Netra Eye-Drops (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary blend) with Chakchusya and Organic Rose in a base of distilled water – all organically preserved with SVA Pranic Preservation Technology.
Caution: Do not use if you have an active infection in the eye, or any known medical condition. Check with your medical first. Do not use if/when wearing contact lenses. May use after removing lenses. 
Children: do not use on children ages 11 and below.
Vaidya also gave us some other effective SVA remedies for your tired eyes. He was addressing eye care through SVA for a long time in his practice. His first SVA product for relieving eye strain, especially caused by EMF/EMR and overwork, was his Herb-Rich Skin Clay. Afterwards he made three more products working on different aspects of eye health through distinct mediums: Triphala Ghee; ALA Cream (Aroma-free); and Ayurvedic Lalita’s Eye Liners.  You can use all of them in addition to the Some Netra eye drops. Herb-Rich Skin Clay: Using the computer for long periods of time drains out the soma or cooling energy of the eyes. When you stare at the computer screen, or any other electronic device (TV, cell-phone, tablet, etc.) for long periods of time, you are using up and burning the lunar energy, or soma, of your eyes, your eyes are now left depleted, and the agni of your eyes, further aggravated not only by soma depletion but by overexposure to electronic synthetic agni, gets further aggravated, creating the dark circles around your eyes. One great solution is to make a soothing eye mask with my Herb-Rich Skin Clay to deliver more soma to the eyes and soak up the buzzy EMF vibrations. Triphala Ghee: The optic nerve and the eyelids are governed by vata dosha, while the overall lubrication of the inside of the eyelid, and the eyeball are governed by kapha dosha. Vyana vata governs the optic nerve and eyelids, and shleshak kapha lubricates the eyelids and eyeball. So whenever any formula for the eyes is put together, it should first be pitta pacifying, cooling. At the same time, it should not be too cold so as not to aggravate shleshaka kapha and vyana vata. SVA Triphala is cooling and lubricating, but unlike other fats, it is also agneya – it has enough agni or fire molecules which make it an ideal fat that does not freeze our channels like other fats. Triphala Ghee for Tired, Itchy Eyes

 ALA Cream (Aroma-free): Sensitive areas like the eyes, run by alochak pitta, are by nature hot. When circulation to the eyes and nerve extremities in the eyes goes low, cooling but circulation enhancing products such as ALA are ideal. Triphala ghee can be applied on the temples and eye area at night to nourish and nurture. Then, in the day time, you may apply water-based ALA cream. This is a light soothing cream that will help improve circulation in the eye area, particularly helpful for those who work on computers for extended hours, or those who exert their eyes extensively otherwise on a daily basis. Did you know that a rose not only pacifies your sadhak pitta – even as it balances your sadhak agni – but also carries a “somnasya jana” or bliss-enhancing property in its aroma? These properties bestow upon rose its supreme position in the flower kingdom. This is probably why our hearts open wide to love when we see or smell a rose, or when we eat its petals.
In Ayurveda, we know that sadhak pitta is the pitta subdosha that governs the emotions in the heart. It is aided by sadhak agni, the metabolic principle, sitting in the heart, that helps us “digest” and “process” emotions and thoughts. When sadhak pitta and sadhak agni are out of balance, we will tend to feel down and blue, unable to appreciate or enjoy anything. We may try hard as we can to chase away the blues, mentally listing things we know we are grateful for, our heart will not follow suit and allow us the liberating feeling of gratitude unless we balance sadhak pitta and re-ignite sadhak agni. 
In life, many times even though things maybe be going great or smooth, if our sadhak pitta is aggravated due to external circumstances – stress from work; sleep deprivation; a fatigued overworked physiology; family pressures; etc, we may feel down and lack the readiness to tackle a new day, or our projects, with zest. Things can be even more challenging in conjugal life, if one partner’s sadhak pitta is off and the other just can’t understand why he or she is not able to enjoy or appreciate…
Aggravation of sadhak pitta is common. When sadhak pitta is aggravated, our outlook on life will remain grim and grey despite our best mental and other efforts. Or we may just not feel up to anything. Sadhak pitta aggravation takes the spark out of life. 
Pacification of sadhak pitta with the proper food, or proper aroma therapy, can work wonders! By “proper” Vaidya Mishra means for us to make the best choices of least processed foods, non-synthetic scents, etc.
When sadhak pitta is aggravated, we will crave sweet and cool or cold foods. We usually reach for the freezer door and take out the ice cream tub! If your ice cream is made with white sugar (white sugar depletes our bodies of minerals and lowers our pH bringing in more sadness!) and contains processed ingredients, flavorings, the sweet taste may pacify your sadhak pitta temporarily, but at the same time it will put out the flame of your pachak pitta which directly impacts your sadhak agni. Sadhak agni is the wick which helps to fuel your sadhak pitta so that your thoughts and emotions are processed. When you eat heavy, cold, clogging foods that are processed, your pachak agni is overwhelmed and your sadhak agni flame goes low, and in a little while, after eating the ice cream, you will experience a new low and even though you will feel immediate joy from eating the sweet and cold ice cream, after a little while, you will crash. You may then crave more ice cream, and then crash again. At the end of the day, your sadness will be coupled with guilt notonly at having eaten too ice cream but you will end up doubly sad and in the pits! Not a very smart formula! 
So the key is to fan the sadhak agni flame and keep it up and running in order to maintain our daily joy. So when you are down and out, it’s important to stay aware and not reach out for that chocolate bar or the ice cream, instead choose fresh juicy fruits or healthy sweets. Or run yourself a nice hot water bath with rose essential oil. Or apply rose oil on your wrists and inhale. Try Vaidya Mishra’s Rose aroma inhaler – it works within seconds. Making preserve out of rose petals is an old tradition in many cultures. In India, in the Middle East, as well as Europe. In India, rose preserve is very popular and is called: Gulkand.
Vaidya Mishra has carefully formulated his SVA Rose Petal Preserve according to his ancient ayurvedic family precepts, with Rosa centifolia and raw organic cane sugar. He uses natural ascorbic acid to balance the sugar molecules. In addition, he uses pectin which micro-encapsulates the sugar molecules, so that they do not rush into your blood stream and give you a sugar high. Pectin also modulates the sugar molecules to give sustained release into the body.

1. Pacifies Vata and Pitta Dosha: Since it carries the sweet and unctuous properties, it pacifies Vata dosha - the sweet rasa, or taste, pacifies vata. The rose’s snigdha or unctuous property also balances vata, since vata that tends to be dry. Any dravya or item that has the unctuous lubricating guna or property is pacifying to vata. Then due to its cooling virya or potency, as well as bitter and astringent taste, it is pacifying for Pitta dosha. 
2. Enhances brain health: rose is known to be a medhya, that is, it enhances dhi dritti smriti. These are the 3 primary functions of the brain for the actions of registering, storing and recalling knowledge and information. When they are operating in a balanced and coordinated manner, the brain is in a stress-free state of bliss. 
3. Uplifts spiritually: Rose carries a unique property called “Som Nasya Janana.” This means that rose creates good coordination between the mind and Satwa, the light of the soul: it’s an instant bliss generator! 
4. Strengthens the stomach: according to Ayurveda, rose is balakarika, meaning it strengthens the stomach, intestine and liver organ systems. Bala means strength. In addition, due to its deepana properties, it balances appetite. It is also pachana – it enhances overall metabolism. 
5. It is anulomana: it helps pacify apana vata by making sure the downward movement of apana is maintained – make note, however, that it does not act as a laxative, unless you consume excessively large quantities of rose. When consumed in small but regular quantities, it enhances absorption of nutrients. 

6. Balances the metabolism: consuming rose petal products is particularly beneficial when people have high pitta and high vata imbalances. These imbalances are also usually associated with low agni or low metabolic fire in the stomach and tissues. Low agni results in toxic build-up, weight gain, body aches and pains, etc. Eating rose will pacify these two doshas and help reset the physiology on its way to blissful balance. 
7. Helps with skin conditions: Rose pacifies the heat in the blood, and thus keeps imbalances in the skin from erupting. 
8. A Great Pitta Pacifier: Other specific ailments that Rose has been known to help with are amenorrhea (absence of menstrual flow), inflamed eyes, dizziness, headache due to Pitta aggravation, sore throat, enlarged tonsils, nervousness, grief, dullness of the skin and acne caused by Pitta imbalances.
9. Nurtures and Supports Beautiful Skin: Whether ingested orally or applied transdermally, Rose is used in Ayurveda for individuals who experience heat or burning sensations in their limbs, or their body overall. This is one of the most important uses of rose for the skin. When taken internally, it purifies the sweat of hot acidic toxins that cause harm on the surface of the skin when a person sweats. Regular transdermal use of rose either in poultices or cream formulas cleans the sweat externally, by neutralizing the pH of the sweat, so that when it is released through the skin, it does not cause irritation.
10. Helps Heart Health: In Ayurveda, rose is also used as a remedy for the physical circulatory system. It is a cardio-tonic, called a “hridya.” 
11. Enhances Romance: Rose is also known for its vajikarna properties: we find a lot of recipes in Ayurveda that use Rose to enhance as a remedy to support romantic conjugal life. 
Rose is great for vata and pitta doshas. Kapha body types may feel they do not fare so well with too much rose. They can use less of it, however, if they want to enjoy the rose petal preserve, they can sprinkle some freshly ground black pepper on top.
