Rose for Mental & Emotional Bliss – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Feb 10, 2022 – #4, Vol 12

The use of rose petals beyond floral decoration is a very old tradition in many cultures – India of course, but also the Middle East, as well as South East Asia. This is probably because ancients cultures valued the healing and balancing properties of rose. But none gives us greater insight than Ayurveda. Vaidya Mishra reminded us that rose is a cardio-tonic, or hridya. It calms and balances the vibrational and physical hearts. But rose is also known for its vajikarna properties. We find a lot of recipes in Ayurveda that use Rose to enhance physical and sensual love between partners to support collective and individual dharma. But that’s not all: one of the most important uses of rose is for the skin. When taken internally, it purifies the sweat of hot acidic toxins that cause harm on the surface of the skin when a person sweats. Regular transdermal use of rose either in poultices or cream formulas cleans the sweat externally, by neutralizing the pH of the sweat, so that when it is released through the skin, it does not cause irritation. 
Ultimately rose petals are pitta and vata pacifying. How about the kapha dosha? Does it aggravate kapha? It depends on the preparation. That is why Vaidya has made a special SVA formula, his Rose Petal Preserve is prepared in such a way as to become all Vata, Pitta, and Kapha pacifying. You can also add some freshly ground black pepper when consuming the preserve to make sure it will not aggravate Kapha dosha. 
In India, Rose Preserve is very popular and is called: Gulkand. It is readily available everywhere. However, not all recipes and preserves will have a balancing effect. When it is a commercial item, it is usually made with white sugar – we know that the consumption of white sugar depletes our bodies of minerals and lowers our pH, so you want to avoid that. Also, many recipes do not use Rosa Centifolia. Other varieties of rose have different properties, so you want to be careful when you are purchasing a rose preserve that it was actually made with Rosa Centifolia. 
In addition, many times, the recipes use vinegar, or citric acid, as well as synthetic scent or aroma, or color, to enhance the look and flavor. These are all carcinogenic ingredients you want to steer clear of.

Irregular Heartbeat
&
Shortness of Breath?

A heartbeat arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat which may occur when the electrical signals to the heart don’t work properly, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly. You might feel a fluttering feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, lightheadedness or dizziness, sweating or even fainting symptoms. If you feel like your heart is beating too fast or too slow, schedule an appointment with your doctor to have it checked out. In addition, seek immediate medical help if you have shortness of breath, fainting or near fainting and chest pain or discomfort.
If you have had your heart checked out and your doctor says it is not life-threatening and this may occasionally happen and you just have to monitor it, then I can give you some advice to help you alleviate the symptoms by getting to some of the possible root causes of the problem.
So first off, it’s good to know that calcium makes the heart muscle contract and magnesium relaxes it. What happens all too often is that if you become too depleted in magnesium then the heart might occasionally go out of rhythm. There are many reasons magnesium could go low. Under periods of stress the cortisol that your adrenal glands release flushes out the magnesium. This is why many people develop an irregular heartbeat when under stress as their magnesium goes low and the heart now struggles to maintain its rhythm. We like to administer magnesium transdermally through the skin using various oils, creams and roll-ons. If you take it orally it can go through your system too quickly, never really absorbing well and may even create diarrhea.

We also give a transdermal application of an herb called ashwagandha which prevents the adrenal glands from producing too much cortisol in the first place. Ashwagandha helps you keep an even keel when under stress so you don’t upset your whole physiology as the adrenal glands try to keep up with the stress by pouring out stress hormones.
And sometimes when the adrenal glands are under a prolonged period of stress and they become burnt out, you might lose your electrolytes which the heart needs to beat regularly. The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and maintain the water and electrolyte balance, which means that they control both sodium and potassium levels and how much water we need to retain.
So if the adrenals become exhausted you might lose beneficial electrolytes into your urine. Modern medicine doesn’t really understand this idea of adrenal exhaustion because they don’t meet the diagnostic criteria for Addison’s Disease (which is extremely little adrenal function) or Cushing’s Disease (which is hyper adrenal function). These two diseases affect less than 2% of the population however the truth is that well over 80% of the population suffer from some level of adrenal insufficiency. And if this happens you could develop irregular heart rhythms if your electrolytes go out of balance. 
While there may be several electrolyte drinks and potions on the market, I always prefer to have our patients get their nutrients through food if at all possible. This is why I give them Biehler’s Broth to restore their electrolyte balance. This soup was developed by Dr. Henry Biehler, an American physician born in 1893 in Ohio whose book, “Food is Your Best Medicine,” advocated the treatment of disease with foods. This recipe helps to restore the sodium/potassium levels and acid/alkaline balance in the body, especially after prolonged periods of stress which weakens the adrenal glands to the point where the electrolytes are flushed out of the body. 
Here is the recipe: In a pot add two handfuls of each chopped celery, zucchini, parsley and string beans. Add enough water to cover, including some white Himalayan Salt (known as Soma salt), pepper and 1/2 tsp of ghee. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes, puree and eat as a side dish. If you eat this recipe whenever you are experiencing adrenal burnout, you will feel a refreshing sense of energy surge through your body as your electrolytes balance is restored which in turn will help your heart rhythm immensely.
The heart and all the other glands need a constant supply of prana in order to work properly. The prana comes in at the top of the head through a special marma point, known as the Adhipati Marma Point. It then runs down the spine through two vibrational channels known as the Ida and Pingala channel (together known as the Shushumna Nadi) and then from the spine branches off to feed all the organs, glands and the arms and the legs.
Sometimes the flow of prana can get obstructed so we use special transdermal creams which are applied down the spine to open up the flow of prana so the heart can receive an uninterrupted supply, and we also use Arjuna transdermal cream since Arjuna is especially important for proper heart function. 
If you work around computers or live in a house or apartment which has a smart meter and are especially sensitive to WIFI and the effects of EMF’s, you might also experience heartbeat irregularities as the heart runs on a continuous supply of electrical stimulation. In cases such as these we have special formulas to negate the effects of the EMF’s, and we also instruct the patients to sip on water with a few crushed basil or holy basil leaves, as they can absorb the EMF’s out of their bodies. We also tell them if it is warm enough outside to go lie directly on the earth or the sand at the beach as direct contact with nature will also absorb the EMF’s out of the body. Walking in the moonlight is also good and putting plants around the computer might also help to absorb some of the radiation coming from the computer.
Many cases of heartbeat arrhythmias occur if Vata goes high, which creates anxiety, worries and depression. We also aggravate Vata by rushing around all day or eating a diet that is too cold and light, especially if we are eating a vegetarian diet with no milk products. Vata is the element of lightness, quickness and dryness, so too much of these elements will disturb the normal balance of Vata in the body. This means the diet needs to consist of warm cooked foods that are unctuous in nature, cooked vegetables, dahls and grains, with warm milk and ghee added to create some heaviness in the diet. I have taken care of many vegans who developed arrhythmias because the diet was too light causing their Vata to soar, resulting in pretty severe heart beat irregularities which went away as soon as warm milk and ghee were added back into their diet.
Overexercising can also throw Vata out of balance as Vata is the element of movement and quickness. So while it’s good to have some movement in the body, we don’t want to overdo it by jogging (brisk walking would be better) or exercising more than our bodies can handle in any given week. The stockier kapha types can withstand more vigorous workouts whereas the more delicately framed Vatas need to do more gentle stretching, yoga, walking and quieter forms of exercise.
And as usual, if you find yourself under prolonged periods of stress, there are many things you can do to alleviate the effects of the stress on your body before they turn into heart beat arrhythmias. For example, try a daily warm oil massage or a soak in a warm magnesium bath for a half hour a few times a week. Try to find an Ayurvedic clinic that will perform Shirodhara where warm medicated oils are slowly poured onto your forehead, sometimes combined with a body, scalp or head massage. 
There are many calming herbs to help you reduce your stress and cortisol levels, such as shankapushpi, jatamansi and calamus root, to name a few.
And one of the most calming things anyone can do is to have a cup of milk simmered with cardamom pods, a cinnamon stick and turmeric, strained and sipped slowly on an empty stomach. Use goat’s milk if you are sensitive to cow’s milk. Try to get whole milk if using cow’s milk as the fat is especially calming to the nervous system as it deeply pacifies your frazzled Vata.
Avoid caffeine, white refined sugar, chocolate, and cacao as these are jangling to the nerves and can invite problems with the heartbeat.
And by all means get to bed no later than 10:00 PM as you need at least two hours of sleep before midnight to totally recharge all the organs and glands in your body. Wake up as the sun is coming up to be in tune with the fundamental laws of nature that our bodies run on, which will ensure a proper rhythm of nature creating a perfect heart rhythm.

Sleep, Soma, & Ojas! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Jan 27, 2022 – #2, Vol 12

You DESERVE good sleep! Whether you are an over-extended homemaker or an over-taxed corporate CEO – we all work too hard! And if we do not re-charge every night, it is just a matter of time before our bodies become reluctant to engage in daily activities – even joyful ones. It’s because sleep, as we learn in Ayurveda, is one of the 3 foundational pillars of good health in life. But is this just a nifty metaphor? Vaidya Mishra demystified the ancient vedic texts for us and explained why sleep, along with good fresh pranic food, and proper conduct (brahma-acharya) is what you need to replenish OJAS – on a daily basis. During the day, when we are full of activity we are using up Ojas – ojas is the finest bi-product of perfect health that adds glow to the face, rhythm to the feet, and song in the heart! You can think of it as the fuel necessary not only for good activity but for life. When ojas goes low, you get sick. When “param ojas” is diminished by even one drop, your soul departs from the body – literally! Ojas is the finest by-product of good food, good sleep, and good conduct. Modern science has an in-depth understanding of how sleep and activity are necessary sides of the same coin, and modern findings confirm ancient ayurvedic wisdom. For example, we know that the ayurvedic shastras recommend we go to bed by 8:30pm. Did you know that the body starts to release melatonin around 8pm, in line with the circadian cycle? Melatonin peaks by 10pm and if we are not asleep by then, it’s much harder to fall asleep. Or if we do, our sleep does not carry the same rejuvenative properties and we may wake up groggy. The point is: we do not live in vacuum. We are part and parcel of a complex universe where highly intricate and complex laws of nature work in harmony to keep things in place. How does this help us get more better sleep? Again, Vaidya Mishra reminded us that the greatest truths are the simplest: for better sleep we need better and more SOMA! Good soma in the environment as in less EMF exposure; good soma in the food we eat – no leftovers, or acidic preservatives, etc; good soma in the relationships we cultivate which start with self-compassion; good soma in the activities we choose: skip the horror movies for some comedy; etc. Soma, he reminded us, is the raw material for ojas. When you make sure during the day not to expose your body, mind, and heart, to depleting situations, acidic food, and stressful emotions, and instead, you take a walk in the moonlight after a stressful day, you make sure you get some laughs (best remedy for impossible situations!), you practice some nice gentle pranayam to calm the mind etc, then by 8 pm when your body is ready to shift gears, you will be able to release and get replenished. Peripheral Neuropathy,
& What You Can Do About It

Peripheral neuropathy occurs from damage to the nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord, known as the peripheral nerves, and frequently starts in the hands and feet, but can also affect other parts of the body. People describe the pain as stabbing, burning or tingling and can become quite debilitating.
Diabetes has been cited as the most common cause for neuropathy, but I have treated so many cases of neuropathy where the patient did not have diabetes or any of the other common underlying causes, such as trauma, autoimmune disorders, alcoholism or the use of some medications such as chemotherapy.
When you have been in practice as long as I have, having seen thousands upon thousands of patients over the past 35 years, you start to see patterns emerge. For example, early on in my practice I could see that many of the women who had taken hormone replacement therapy (HRT) eventually developed breast cancer. Then years later a large study was done, the Women’s Health Initiative Study, which did in fact prove a huge relationship between use of HRT and breast cancer.
In much the same way, I have seen a definite link between the use of flu shots which contain mercury and/or the use of statin drugs as another possible cause of neuropathy. Let me explain further. 
Mercury used to be found as a preservative in most of the vaccines but fortunately since 2006 it was finally taken out of most of the shots, but it is still found in the flu shot. I have seen many patients develop neuropathy from repeated flu shots which contain mercury. Mercury is considered the most dangerous heavy metal and has affinity for fat tissue, such as the delicate nerve cells known as neurons. And from my experience it seems that the neuropathy occurs after receiving many flu shots, more than 10 or so over a broad span of time. Which is why it is not listed as one of the causes of neuropathy, as it doesn’t usually occur after a single shot, but tends to be from an accumulation of the mercury which occurs over many years and after many flu shots.

As Ayurvedic practitioners we are able to feel mercury in the pulse and where it has gone — usually it has an affinity for the brain, liver, bone marrow and nerve tissue, all of which we can feel in the pulse after someone has had years of flu shots. My Ayurvedic teacher and mentor, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra taught me how mercury was able to actually burn the nerve tissue because of its tremendous heating effect on the physiology. He told me how he spent the whole first year in Ayurvedic college studying the harmful effects of mercury and how it was described in the ancient Ayurvedic texts as extremely piercing and burning to whatever tissue it came in contact with. Research shows that mercury has an affinity for fat tissue which is why it always lands in the fatty areas of the body, such as the brain, the nerve cells, the liver, kidneys and bone marrow.

The other cause of neuropathy I see in my practice comes from statin drugs, the pharmaceuticals which decrease cholesterol. Sometimes these drugs work too well and they can actually starve the nerve tissue to the point where it can shrivel up, since the nerve tissue is made out of cholesterol. 
To put it more scientifically, cholesterol nourishes and lubricates the brain and nerve cells and is one of the factors involved in allowing nerve cells to communicate with each other and exchange electrical signals. Cholesterol is also required for the formation of the myelin sheath, the white fatty covering that provides a protective coating on the nerve cells.The myelin sheath insulates nerve cells and enhances the passing of electrical signals throughout the nervous system. Cholesterol makes up the majority of the myelin in your body.
In fact, the brain is considered the fattiest organ in your body, and consists of a minimum of 60% fat. And it is considered the most cholesterol-rich organ, containing about 25% of all the cholesterol in your body. 
We get cholesterol from two sources. Once source is from the dietary cholesterol found in the food we eat. But we cannot possibly eat the amount of cholesterol the body requires each day to make hormones and nourish the brain and nerve cells, so it is the job of the liver to make the rest. The liver makes most of the cholesterol your body needs, but the statin drugs work by reducing the liver’s production of cholesterol. According to the Mayo Clinic, the statin drugs can both damage the liver and create neurological side effects since they are depriving the much needed cholesterol to nourish the nerve tissue.
On top of that the latest study from October 5, 2021 from Health Day News, states that “researchers found that among those taking statins, 56% saw their diabetes progress compared with 48% of those not taking statins. And the higher the dose of the statin, the faster the progression of the diabetes.” This study compared 83,000 diabetic patients who used statins and more than 83,000 who didn’t. 
And the levels of neuropathy go up as diabetes worsens.
I remember about 20 years ago in my practice a patient came to me with unexplained neuropathy. He was suffering from pain in his hands and feet but his doctors couldn’t find out the underlying cause. After I tested him I told him his nerve tissue was suffering from lack of fats due to the statin drugs he was taking. I recommended he ask his doctor if he could wean off them and at the same time my plan was to teach him the good sources of cholesterol that wouldn’t clog his arteries, such as in boiled unhomogenized cow’s milk and ghee, so he could nourish his fat-deprived nerve tissue.
He decided to get a second opinion so he went to the Mayo Clinic. They ran all sorts of studies on him and told him his neuropathy was in fact coming from lack of fats due to the statin drugs.
So either one alone, flu shots or statin drugs, may create depletion of the nerve tissue in susceptible patients, and the two together may worsen the tendency.
Luckily, Vaidya got me the special herbs to heal both the nerve tissue and the myelin sheath. We also use transdermal magnesium therapy, which means we apply magnesium chloride to the skin through various oils and lotions to help the nerve conduction and some specially made alpha lipoic acid products to heal the inflammation in the nerve tissue. He made them from spinach and broccoli which is 10x more potent than the synthetic versions commonly used on the market. He also developed some transdermal creams to be put directly onto the area of neuropathy. These creams open up the physical channels to allow the herbs which heal the nerves to penetrate into the nerve tissue, since it is considered a deep tissue which can be somewhat hard to reach.
At the same time we repair the nerve cells we must also regenerate the damaged liver cells, clean the bone marrow and liver using various foods and herbs, and then of course we have to chelate or pull the mercury off the nerve tissue and out of the liver and other fat cells.
As we do this we have to flush the toxins out through the kidneys and urine using special tea preparations. And we have to bind the toxins and direct them into the bowel movement. This flushing and binding of the toxins is important because you don’t want these serious toxins traveling around the body once you pull them out. 
Since mercury and chemical drugs are so heating and have such a strong tendency to burn, we must also lubricate the delicate system of channels which take out these nasty chemicals so they don’t rupture as the toxins exit the body into the bowel movement, urine and sweat. To do this we must prepare the channels before any detox begins using special lubricating herbs such as slippery elm, marshmallow root and deglycerized licorice or DGL.
If you must get the flu shot each year always ask for the one which doesn’t contain mercury. And you might want to study the cholesterol issue a little further and see if you think it might better serve you to fix the underlying reasons why the cholesterol might be high in the first place — usually it comes from improper liver and/or gall bladder function, since both organs clear the cholesterol out of the blood. And the same is true of diabetes — the underlying initial cause of diabetes lies in improper liver function, usually from consuming bad vegetable oils, hydrogenated and trans fats, processed foods and many pharmaceuticals.
In fact, the liver is at the root of most of the diseases we suffer from, however, modern medicine doesn’t place enough emphasis on the liver and instead only monitors frank liver disease, so they miss these early stages when the liver is toxic and unable to perform its hundreds of functions properly. Plus, all pharmaceuticals are toxic to the liver so there isn’t much they could offer anyway. 
On the other hand, there are numerous herbal remedies given to us by nature which can heal the liver by gently cleaning it out, cooling it down and regenerating damaged liver cells. If you address the liver in these very early stages when its function is compromised from holding onto so many toxins, you can prevent most diseases from arising in the first place.
While yes, neuropathy can be somewhat difficult to fix, at least now you know of some alternative methods that lie outside of what modern medicine may have to offer you. Plus, it is very difficult to treat any disease without getting to the root cause of the disease, so now you can reassess your condition and see if you think it may be coming from too much exposure to mercury and/or depletion of the nourishing fats your nerve tissue needs to stay healthy.
And finally, while it is true that there aren’t definitive studies showing a relationship between flu shots and neuropathy, we are getting closer in that some doctors are starting to become aware of the burning influence of the mercury in the flu shots.
A patient of mine was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease where the myelin sheath has holes burnt into it, affecting the brain and spinal cord. She went to one of the country’s top neurologists here at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and after examining her he stated definitively that the underlying cause of her MS was from the numerous flu shots containing mercury which she had received through the years. So we are getting much closer to the understanding that mercury should never be injected into the body and can have great consequences on our brain and nerve tissue, resulting in many diseases, as well as neuropathy.
Don’t sit around and wait for research to prove this point. Take control of your health and learn how to eat healthy, learn how to cleanse impurities from your body and above all how to navigate your way through modern medicine. While it is true they have amazing diagnostic tools, life-saving procedures and medicines, we must also be careful when we use these medicines due to their underlying toxicity and side effects.

Nasya: What It is & What It Does
The nose is a sensitive doorway that often receives little or no attention. Daily we must pay attention, because the nose has such an important job: warming the air we breathe and filtering out environmental toxins in the process of respiration. SVA tells us that the nasal passages are also the primary entry ways receiving Agni and Soma predominant energies from the universe. Nasya – applying medicated oils in the nose – is the best way to help the nose do its job – a job it should do without swelling or pain; without stuffiness, without itchiness, etc. Nasya also ‘lubricates’ the brain and the sense organs. Insufficient lubrication of the pathways can make one dizzy, spacey, and anxious. We have many different oils to chose from – based on your need of the moment. Four Nasya Oils
Vaidya Mishra made different nasya oil to serve different needs. Read on to discover which one is right for you.
General Instructions on Usage:  Apply your nasya oil into each nostril either by the supplied dropper; with an organic-cotton swab; or with a clean fingertip (nails must be trimmed.) Maintain the purity of each oil, do not touch dropper to nose or anything else. 
This oil was specially designed to open to open ida pingala nadi. Mainly it works to support the nadis, which in this EMF era often get into trouble. Ida Pingala Oil helps the nadis cope with EMFs without getting overwhelmed.
To get best results from this oil, follow this protocol. Apply Lalita’s Age-Defying Facial Cream on phana marma, lateral and at the base of each nostril. Then, tilt your neck back lying down. Put three drops each side of nose with the dropper. Can do three times day – morning, noon, evening. Doing nasya with this oil before meditation will balance the ida and pingala and make the sushumna nadi active for deeper meditation experience.
This oil is for very specific conditions in the sinus and nasal cavity where unwanted bacterial growth may be happening due to exposure to bacteria and depleted friendly bacteria. It will help reestablish proper nasal environment and protect the sinus and nasal cavity from bacterial growth.  
How it works:
  • Immunomodulation of sinuses by kutki pichorrzia, guduchi, clary sage oil, benzoin, and sweet basil.
  • Neutralizes sugar and carbohydrates with gymnema, indian Kino, saptapani, cinnamon. These herbs effectively neutralize the food source needed by bacteria to grow in the sinuses.
  • Supplies cellular system the ability to protect against allergens by daruharidra
  • Jantughna group of herbs – oregano, clary sage, and cyprus - have a bacteriostatic action such that bacteria can’t further multiply.
  • Channel opening black pepper, boswellia, peppermint, and neroli help the absorption of the oil and the release of toxins. 
Precaution: These herbs and essential oil make this nasya oil very powerful. Best to use under supervision of SVA practitioner. It should be used with caution for pitta and vata types. May be a little irritating. Start with only one drop in each side of nose. If you can handle comfortably, then can go up to three drops. May be used three times per day. 

Maha Nasya Oil is our more powerful version of the regular nasya oil   It will open the channels, nourish the nostrils, calms the mind, and support the immune system. Best for Kapha body type.  
·        Magnesium in the oil will nurture and detoxify
·        Black pepper opens channels 
·        Indian sarsaparilla is anti-inflammatory and aromatic
·        Turmeric is anti-inflammatory
·         Calamus root is calming
·        Cinnamon is aromatic
·        Nutmeg is channel opening and calming
·        Clove is opening and cooling
·        Kanchanar is growth balancing
·        Vidanga is immunomodulatory
·        Frankincense helps body fight inflammation
·        Neem leaf powder detoxifying
·        Babul is very nurturing
·        Rose and vetiver are aromatic and cooling
·        Kayphal is channel opening  
Precautions: Vata and Pitta body types use with caution. Best to use under supervision of SVA practitioner. Start with one drop to see if any irritation. If no discomfort, you many work up to three drops. Use this oil only in morning. 

Tridoshic Nasya Oil: This is our original SVA Nasya oil. Tri-doshic, this oil can be used safely three times per day. Best nasya oil to maintain the health of the physical nasal channels
  • Ajowain seed: channel open, ama burning 
  • Coriander seed: cooling n detoxifying
  • Vidanga powder: supports immune system
  • Triphala powder: soothing, nurturing, detoxifying, firms the mucous membranes

Why Does Your Thyroid Go Off?

I had the greatest fortune to have sat with one of India’s greatest Ayurvedic physicians, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra. He came from a family lineage dating back 5,000 years and were Raj Vaidyas, the very few selectively picked Ayurvedic doctors worthy of treating the royalty of India. I sat with Vaidya for almost 20 years and during that time he taught me all of his family lineage secrets, and at the same time he made over 500 formulas for all the conditions we treated together. 
Once he saw how successful the treatments were and how the patients were overcoming all kinds of health problems, he decided to start teaching other doctors. He started to write a course which he said would last two years: the first year he would teach the doctors all the diseases and the second year he would teach them all the herbs used to treat those diseases. So he started writing the course, but he suddenly passed away one day totally unexpectedly and never got to finish writing it up.
Suddenly all the doctors turned to me and asked how they would then gain access to the precious knowledge he had imparted to me. It was then and there that I realized that I needed to train both the doctors and the lay person all that Vaidya had taught me so this valuable knowledge wouldn’t end with me. 
So I started to write a compendium book of all the diseases and the best way to treat them. When I pitched the idea to publishers they told me that while I might enjoy reading about several diseases in one book, the average person would rather read about one disease at a time. I was told to pick one disease and write on that. Within a split second I said, “Oh, then I must write about the thyroid gland.”
This is because out of all the ailments I treat, big and small, the thyroid gland is definitely something I treat more of than any disease out there.

Why is this so? And why are common treatments for the thyroid not always the best route to take in treating this very delicate and important gland?
First, let me describe why I felt so compelled to write a book on the thyroid:
There are two basic types of thyroid patients you’ll see: The first group are those who have full-blown thyroid symptoms, such as hair loss, unexplained weight gain, constipation, high cholesterol, history of miscarriage, cold hands and feet, dry skin and hair, and depression, yet when they get their blood work done all the thyroid levels come back within the normal range. They are told nothing is wrong with them and they leave the doctor’s office feeling hopeless and frustrated.
The second group has all these symptoms and their blood work does show low thyroid hormone levels, but they still have the same symptoms even after they are put on prescription thyroid medication. 
So let’s take a look at the first group: According to Vaidya Mishra’s family lineage, we go through 9 stages of a disease process as we work our way towards a disease which will show up on medical testing. In the first two stages some things may be out of balance in our bodies but there won’t be any symptoms just yet. By the second and third stages you will start to get symptoms, but at this stage you still can’t find it on any testing and you can’t yet name it as a disease. But if you let these imbalances continue to fester, by the fifth and sixth stage it will become evident on blood work and other testing, and you can now start to give a name to the disease. This is why many people might have a weak thyroid, which is giving them full-blown thyroid symptoms, but the disease process hasn’t progressed to the fifth and sixth stage yet, where anyone can find it.
Which, of course is good, but it also means that you don’t ignore the early stages of a disease process just because it doesn’t show up on blood work yet. What you have to do is to try to figure out all the reasons why the thyroid is weak. It’s usually multiple reasons, and they will be different in each patient. You must address those underlying reasons and then support the thyroid gland with proper herbal formulas, diet and proper rest. This will prevent your imbalance from progressing to the fifth and sixth stage where a disease process can be detected through modern medical devices.
I can’t tell you how many hundreds of patients I have seen where I tell them we need to fix their thyroid gland and they tell me their blood work is normal. And I have had some of them decide not to treat it, and then they called me a few years later saying how they should have listened because now they were diagnosed with thyroid disease.
Now the second group whose blood work did show a thyroid problem and they are taking medication still don’t feel well. This is because no attempt was made to try to see what the underlying problems are which are weakening the thyroid in the first place. And on top of that, when you take the prescription thyroid hormones, your thyroid gland will actually get weaker and might even disintegrate as the years go by because it is no longer called upon to make its hormones. So it just goes into a hibernation. This is why just taking the thyroid medicine without addressing all the reasons why the thyroid gland is weak isn’t always a good idea.
So here’s a list of the most common reasons the thyroid gland could be weak:
1) Eating tofu and/or drinking soy milk: the isoflavones in the soy products depress the thyroid gland.
2) Drinking fluoridated water as the fluoride is a poison to the thyroid gland. Back in the 1930’s fluoride was used to weaken the thyroid gland in cases of hyperthyroidism where the thyroid gland was overactive. But it worked too well — the fluoride killed the thyroid gland, so they had to scrap that idea. It was shortly after that they put it in a lot of the municipal drinking water throughout the United States and some other countries. And it was shortly after that the thyroid epidemic began to blossom as people unwittingly shut down their thyroid glands as they tried to prevent dental cavities.

3) Mercury in the flu shots, fish, air pollution and old dental fillings: The thyroid gland is the only gland that uses iodine, so whenever any iodine comes into the body it goes immediately to the thyroid gland to be used to make its hormones. The problem is this: mercury looks very similar to fluoride on the periodic chart, and the thyroid gland actually prefers the mercury over the iodine, so when that comes into the body, it lands on the thyroid gland and upsets its normal function.
Going to bed past 10:00 PM: The thyroid gland is a very delicate gland, kind of like a little princess. She needs at least 2 hours of sleep before midnight in order to function properly, so if you decide you want to stay up late on a regular basis, you are inviting lots of thyroid problems.
A diet too low in animal protein: The thyroid gland makes its hormones primarily out of animal protein, so if you have decided to go on a plant-based diet, and are misinterpreting this to mean no animal products at all in the diet and ONLY plants instead of plant-BASED, then your thyroid gland will struggle to make its hormones.
The birth control pill: if you are on the birth control pill for any length of time, you run the risk of developing thyroid problems for many reasons, but here are a few: the birth control pill depletes selenium, zinc and tyrosine which your thyroid gland needs to make its hormones. 
Another reason is because the high doses of estrogen contained in birth control pills increase the activity of Thyroxine Binding Globulin (TBG) which binds thyroid hormone. When you have too much TBG in the bloodstream it leads to lower levels of free thyroid hormone available for use by the body. The thyroid hormone is there, but it is bound to this protein. In order for it to have any effects on the body, it has to let go of this protein and travel in the bloodstream to its destination sites. If there is too much TBG, the thyroid gland is bound up and can’t get free to go where it has to go.
And the birth control pill indirectly affects the thyroid by destroying the friendly bacteria in the gut and at the same creating tremendous amounts of toxicity in the liver as it struggles to deal with these terrible chemicals coming into it every day. Both the friendly bacteria in the gut and the liver activate the thyroid hormones so they can be used by the body. It works like this: you make the thyroid hormones, but they really can’t exert their influence until they are activated and carried into the inside of your cells. Eighty percent of this activation occurs by the liver and twenty percent occurs by the friendly bacteria in the gut. So if you upset the function of these two very important areas, you will develop thyroid problems.
And one of the largest reasons for thyroid problems come from too much rushing, or as we call it in Ayurvedic terminology: high Vata. Vata is that governing principle inside of our bodies that controls the movement of things throughout the body, such as the movement of food through the digestive tract, or the movement of blood as it circulates throughout the body. Even the movement of thoughts in the mind are under the control of Vata. So while we may want to be physically active and use our brains efficiently every day, if we have too much physical movement, or too many thoughts in the mind our Vata can go high. 
In other words, if we rush too much through the day it will definitely weaken both our thyroid glands and adrenal glands as they try to accommodate this high level of stress that you are putting on your body. Yes, we were made to move and think throughout the day, but like everything else, we want a balanced amount of movement in our bodies and minds. We all know that burnt out feeling that comes from worrying too much about something or from burning the candle at both ends. After a while we become so fatigued, and the best thing at that point is to allow the body to rest and figure out ways to calm down the mind so we don’t wear out our thyroid glands.
So the point of my book was this: the thyroid gland is more the victim of all these problems that we might experience in our lives. In other words, a problem with the thyroid gland doesn’t lie in the thyroid gland per se, but instead is being caused by all these various influences which can upset its normal function. So we want to redirect our treatment away from reflexively taking thyroid hormones and instead address all the things that wreak havoc on the thyroid gland. Sometimes you might need to take some herbal formulas to help strengthen the thyroid again if it has become too weakened.
So if you feel you have a thyroid problem, try to think outside the box and think more in terms of WHY you might have a thyroid problem. Stop doing those things that weaken it: go to bed no later than 10 PM, stop taking the birth control pill, make sure you get sufficient amounts of animal protein in the diet along with your vegetables, grains and beans, ask for the flu shot without the mercury, stop drinking the fluoridated tap water, and if you do feel you have mercury and/or fluoride in your body then learn the Ayurvedic ways of chelating it out using our cilantro-based remedies. Fix your gut and liver, and by all means stop rushing and multitasking all day: your thyroid gland can’t handle it.
Once you learn how to pamper this very important gland you will be amazed at how many of your symptoms clear up, and in the long run you will have prevented both thyroid disease and all the problems associated with it.

11 Health Benefits of Cranberries PLUS a Recipe! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Nov 25, 2021 – #46, Vol 11

We often forget how good cranberries are! This powerhouse of Nature gets overshadowed by other berries, except for that one-day-a-year on Thanksgiving day! There are many so many reasons you should regularly include cranberries into your daily diet. Don’t wait for Thanksgiving to enjoy their countless health benefits. There are countless recipes online for drinks, sauces, preserves. But there is also Vaidya Mishra’s Organic Cranberry Preserve – ready to eat balancing ayurvedic and delicious (see below).
So what’s so great about cranberries? Well here is a quick look at what they do: they are a power fruit – great for the eyes, cardiovascular health, and the urinary tract. This apparently disease-fighting fruit is also one of the highest ranked regularly consumed foods for antioxidant content per serving. Antioxidants protect cells from damage by oxidative stress and free radicals, damage that can lead to serious conditions like cancer and heart disease. Some of the antioxidants found in cranberries include anthocyanins, ellagic acid, quercetin, resveratrol, selenium, and vitamins A, C and E.

1) Antioxidant powerhouse
This disease-fighting fruit is one of the highest ranking, regularly consumed foods for antioxidant content per serving, according to the Cranberry Marketing Committee. Antioxidants protect cells from the damage that oxidative stress and free radicals can have on them. That damage can lead to serious conditions like cancer and heart disease.
Some of the antioxidants found in cranberries include anthocyanins, ellagic acid, quercetin, resveratrol, selenium, and vitamins A, C and E.
2) Rich Source of Phtyonutrients
We are still discovering the great health benefits of Phytonutrients. Phytochemicals are chemical compounds produced by plants, generally to help them resist fungi, bacteria and plant virus infections, and also consumption by insects and other animals. Phytonutrients also strengthen a plant’s immune system. They protect the plant from threats in their natural environment such as disease and excessive sun. When humans eat plant foods, phytonutrients protect us from chronic diseases. Phytonutrients have potent anti-cancer and anti-heart disease effects. Red, orange and yellow vegetables and fruit (such as tomatoes, carrots, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes, peaches, mangos, melons, citrus fruits, and berries). Dark green leafy vegetables (such as spinach, kale, bok choy, broccoli, Swiss chard, and romaine lettuce).

One cup of fresh cranberries contains 46 calories, according to the USDA. If you like them raw, they’re a great low-calorie snack — but their tart flavor makes them an acquired taste. Use them in cooking and baking to add a pop of flavor while not adding a lot of calories, as in these recipes:
4) Urinary tract infection preventer
Cranberries and cranberry juice have long been associated with preventing UTIs. There’s a substance in cranberries that prevents “infection-causing bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls,” according to WebMD.
Study results, however, are very inconsistent. Some studies suggest that cranberries can lower the chance of repeated infections in young women. However, an October 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that female patients in nursing homes who took cranberry capsules for a year didn’t have fewer episodes of UTIs than those who took placebos.
5) High in fiber
One cup of cranberries contains 4.6 grams of dietary fiber. The Mayo Clinic says fiber maintains bowel health, lowers cholesterol, and helps control blood sugar. Foods high in fiber can also help control weight because they make you feel fuller for a longer period of time.
6) Full of Vitamins and Minerals
One cup of cranberries contains 24 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 7 percent of the recommended daily values of vitamins K and E, according to Self-Nutrition Data. It’s also a good source of the mineral manganese, containing 20 percent of the recommended daily value.
7) Cardiovascular Disease
Some evidence suggests that the polyphenols in cranberries may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by preventing platelet build-up and reducing blood pressure via anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
8) Research on Cancer
Research has shown that cranberries are beneficial in slowing tumor progression and have shown positive effects against prostate, liver, breast, ovarian, and colon cancers.
9) Supports Dental Health
The same proanthocyanidins in cranberries that help prevent UTIs may also benefit oral health by preventing bacteria from binding to teeth, according to Researchers at the Center for Oral Biology and Eastman Department of Dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Cranberries may also be beneficial in preventing gum disease.
10) Ant-inflammatory Benefits
For the cardiovascular system and for many parts of the digestive tract (including the mouth and gums, stomach, and colon) cranberry has been shown to provide important anti-inflammatory benefits. It’s the phytonutrients in cranberry that are especially effective in lowering our risk of unwanted inflammation, and virtually all of the phytonutrient categories represented in cranberry are now known to play a role. These phytonutrient categories include proanthocyanidins (PACs), anthocyanins (the flavonoid pigments that give cranberries their amazing shades of red), flavonols like quercetin, and phenolic acid (like hydroxycinnamic acids).
11) Immune Support
While research in this area is somewhat limited, recent studies on the immune support benefits of cranberry are exciting. In studies on very small numbers of human participants, intake of cranberry extracts has shown the ability to improve multiple aspects of immune function, and to lower the frequency of cold and flu symptoms in the subjects. In several of these studies, the cranberry extracts were standardized to contain a known, higher-end amount of proanthocyanidins (PACs)—somewhat comparable to a double-strength cranberry juice.

Why is Neem Good for your Skin? – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Nov 18, 2021 – #45, Vol 11

What’s In Your Soap & Bodywash?
Do you know what the chemical ingredients and synthetic scents and additives in commercial soap or body wash do to your skin? They not only strip your skin of its natural oil balance, drying it out, but they also depopulate the colonies of friendly bacteria, AND deliver synthetic toxic chemicals -preservatives, and fragrances – transdermally and instantly into your blood stream and therefore to your entire physiology – WITHIN SECONDS!
The majority of soaps on the market carry toxic foaming agents (SLS), or preservatives (Parabens), or many more coloring and aromatizing synthetic chemicals that reduce the natural lubrication of the skin with regular use. The skin is governed by 3 ayurvedic principles: shleshak kapha, vyana vata, and bhrajak pitta. Shleshak kapha helps maintain moisture levels and keep the skin lubricated; Vyana vata keeps the balance of friendly bacteria and nutrients of the skin well distributed; and Bhrajak pitta – the agneya or metabolic principle – protects the skin by warding off unwanted particles and molecules from entering and going into the blood stream, while it invites and takes in all good molecules that are applied on the skin. Just like we take extra measures not to imbalance the 3 doshas in our stomach or whole body, just so we need to pay attention and take care of not aggravating the doshas governing the skin. When you use soaps and cleaning products with chemicals, you disrupt the balance established by these 3 ayurvedic one after another, and you may eventually develop chronic skin imbalances. For example, regular soap bars dry your skin – this means shleshak kapha goes low. When Shelshak kapha is off, then vyana vata goes high automatically, and this eventually brings down bhrajak pitta – the skin loses its intelligence as to what to absorb and what to reject. Using a drying synthetic soap bar for prolonged periods of time may eventually invite deeper imbalances.

Why Is Neem Good for Your Skin?
Neem is yet another divine very bitter tasting herb that is well known and used extensively in Ayurveda internally and externally. Neem, overall, is used for detoxification, especially of the skin, and for immuno-modulation.
In Sanskrit neem leaf is called nimba. The Ayurvedic text Bhava Prakash describes it as sheeta (cooling), tikta (bitter), grahi (enhancing absorption), katupaka (pungent effect after digestion), and krimipranut (making it hard for harmful microbes to live with).

Neem is one of the most powerful herbs for detoxifying the liver. With the compromised state of the modern physiology and liver in the world today, this herb must be used with extreme caution: if the liver is detoxified too quickly, the old toxins sitting there will go back into the bloodstream and relocate in other parts of the body with the potential to cause serious problems and disease. That’s why Vaidya developed Trans-dermal and Trans-mucosal application of this potent plant. 
Neem Transdermally is Safer!
Neem taken in large doses is very powerful. In fact, the crude form of this herb should not be taken in large doses as it may awaken the detox process faster than the toxins can be safely evacuated. Neem soap, however, delivers many of the properties of neem that support immunity but in a manner that will not overwhelm the body’s detox pathways.
