Bathe to Detox!

The SVA tradition capitalizes on the importance of gentle daily detox through bathing. Vaidya Mishra’s ancestors – physicians to royalty – developed meticulous specific detox bathing protocols – always in line with the  ayurvedic shastras – but addressing the current ailments of their royal patients. These secrets have been passed down to Vaidya Mishra who now has to present them in a format that takes into account our contemporary bodies laden with stress, unhealthy lifestyles and diet, and high EMF exposure.  It is the task of the vaidya, to adapt and adjust ancient knowledge to address our modern needs.

In earlier times, the SVA lineage made use of all the possible modalities of releasing toxins from the body through bathing. All possible modalities include the following list:

  • Aushadhi Snan or herbal bath: this is detox with water and herbs that are steeped in warm water. pic2Aushadhi snan can be self-administered or under the supervision of a clinician. An herbal bath can be either only detoxing or detoxing and rejuvenating at the same time. Vaidya Mishra offers us 3 different herbal bath mixtures – read further for more details.

  • Mrittika or mud baths that are prepared with specific herbal synergies. Clay has the specific original property of absorbtion. When clay, or mud, is applied onto our skin, it mobilizes and pulls out toxins. In general, a mud bath has to have a proper-set up so as not to clog the plumbing pipes, in this sense, it can be difficult to draw oneself a mud bath at home.

Vaidya Mishra has resolved this issue by formulating a special line of CreamClay products. The CreamClay line, as the name indicates, has the texture of a cream, smooth and unctuous, but it is made of clay and thus carries the detoxing properties a mudbath would have. In addition, though, Vaidya’s CreamClays will not clog or accumulate in your bath tub or plumbing pipes. They are safe to use. Vaidya’s CreamClay micro-molecules travel deep into your skin layers to bind the toxins and pacify vyana vata – vyana vata originates from marut, clay being the solidpaste part of soma, it grounds and pacifies vyana vata. Vaidya’s CreamClays bind both fat and water soluble toxins. This is what Mrittika baths are said to do in the Shastras. The vegetable glycerin in Vaidya’s CreamClays prevents dryness in the skin – dryness that can result from a mud bath in general. Vaidya has designed his CreamClays to pull out toxins out but also fills the vacuum created there with soma from the vegetable glycerin and other ingredients, such as marshmallow root etc.

  • Dadhi – is the yoghurt bath, and its primary benefit comes through the probiotic or friendly bacteria that get absorbed. In the shastras, where there is discussion of beauty inside and out, shubhang karanam, the ayurvedic rishis acknowledge how the friendly bacteria in yoghurt play a major role in keeping our skin healthy and lustrous. But, unfortunately, unless one has access to the royal kitchens of yore with dollops of yoghurt, it is hard to get a a yoghurt bath. Vaidya has put together a full line of active pre- and probiotic creams as well as creamclays that supply food for friendly bacteria as well as friendly bacteria themselves to the skin. The formulas contain mucillagenous fibres, in addition to aromatic and nurturing herbs and vegetable glycerin. The cream can be applied onto the whole body, then washed off, and then the probiotic cream for the body can be applied and left on. The formulas will actually be much more balancing and nourishing than a regular yoghurt bath!

  • Dugdh – or milk bath, specifically cow’s milk, was the signature privilege of royalty, with many benefits for the physiology. The milk bath has been discussed in various shastras. bath Milk has been known to have both cleansing and  nurturing properties for the skin. Several proteins and micro-molecules of the fat, along with calcium molecules, provide excellent cleansing and nurturing simultaneously. So how do you get the milk’s benefits without the financial and ethical guilt associated with bathing in a tub of cow’s milk? Sponge with milk. Warm up some milk, 2-3 cups, and pour into a bowl. Add a few rose petals. Then get a cotton cloth or natural fiber clean sponge, and sponge your body with it – tip to toe. Relax 5-10 minutes then shower off.

  • Pushp snan or flower bath – is when we use the properties of flowers and plants to balance our physiology. For example: rose, lavender, jasmine, and many more. You can use the essential oil form, or the dry petals or bulbs. An economical and fast way is to use Vaidya’s SVA soaps with 100% organic real essential oils. Wet the soap bar and apply all over your body. Your skin absorbs the essential oils instantaneously.flowers

  • Mantr Snan is an ancient form of vibtrational bath very common before any auspicious vedic ritual. It involves infusing the vibrational energy of healing sound, or a mantra, into the bath water. This is how you do it: get a bowl of room temperature water, close your eyes and dive within your yogic silent space and recite silently the mantra(s) of your choice, then blow your breath on the bowl of water. Repeat as many times as needed. Then add your bowl of mantra-charged water to water in your bathtub and slip in for a divine experience. “Mantr snan” helps reset your physiology’s cellular intelligence at the most subtle level. If you do not have a mantra or do not wish to charge water yourself here is what you can do. Place a bowl of water next to your speaker and play the healing mantra of your choice – you can use any of Vaidya Mishra’s Healing Mantras. You can play a mantra for at least 20 minutes or as long as 20 hours – it’s up to you. Then pour that bowl of mantra-charged water into your bath and dip in.

All these types of bathing listed above can be done for either:

  • shodhana or detox : this can be either self-administered or conducted under the supervision of a clinical expert
  • rasayana or rejuvenation

As you can see, with his formulations or adaptations of the vedic wisdom to suit our modern lifestyles, Vaidya Mishra has made it very easy for us to have not only a “mud bath” but even to experience the benefits of a yoghurt or milk bath.  But if that’s still too much for you in terms of allotted time, just go with a regular bath or shower. You will be amazed to see how many detoxing and healing properties are associated with taking a bath. See what Bhav Mishra, a great ayurvedic author and healer who wrote practical manuals of Ayurveda based on Carak’s wisdom, says about bathing or showering (pouring warm or cold water over the body and the heat):
