Autumn is here and things feel helter-skelter! All of a sudden there is too much going on and we are falling behind on our commitments and deadlines… To top things of off, our cravings for sweet, and then sour, and then salty, but then again maybe more sweet, or wait – salty and crunchy… You get the picture! Our cravings are in a state of havoc, no matter what we eat we seem to crave something else, but we are also NOT digesting well… You may feel bloated, or bowel-movements are no longer following their regular schedule, etc.
According to SV Ayurveda, here is what is happening: with the Summer heat, our pitta dosha goes high and our pachak agni goes off. With pitta dosha high we crave lots of soma-genic foods (ice-cream, ice-cream, and more ice-cream!). Pitta feels cooled off, but agni, our digestive flame goes off. This upsets and blocks vata dosha but with the Summer heat things can still be tolerable. But when when Autumn arrives and the sun starts its southward journey again, and there is less and less agni in the environment, vata dosha goes even higher. This is what is happening in the physical body. And then the mind’s mode gets inevitably driven by the imbalances of the body. What does this mean? You may feel ungrounded for no reason, forgetful, excessively stressed, restless, your sleep may feel disrupted – you go to bed and fall asleep and suddenly wake up with heart palpitations, or your sleep is light and you wake up tired etc…
So what to do? The key lies in your stomach! Reset your digestion… Balance pitta, re-ignite agni, vata will get pacified automatically. In the stomach: that’s where everything begins and ends. Yakrit, the Sanskrit term for the ‘liver,’ literally means ‘where every process happens.’ The liver – the largest organ in our bodies – carries out hundreds of actions, primarily detoxifying and creating new blood; filtering out toxins/chemicals; building immunity. But did you know that it also has an amazing capacity to regenerate itself? Without the liver we wouldn’t be able to transform food into energy, by breaking down fats and proteins. Here are some of the liver’s most vital functions:
Produces fresh blood AND cleans toxins out of the blood: the many cells of the liver, known as hepatocytes, accept and filter this blood. They act as little sorting centers, determining which nutrients should be processed, what should be stored, what should be eliminated via the stool, what should go back to the blood; it also gets rid of old red blood cells; the liver thus regulates/maintains healthy amount of blood in the body;
Produces bile, a fluid that helps the body digest (break down) fat: the liver stores fat-soluble vitamins as well as minerals such as copper and iron, releasing them when the body needs them. It also helps to break down fats in a person’s diet: it either metabolizes fats or releases them as energy. The liver produces an estimated 800 to 1000 ml of bile each day. This bile flows into the small intestine where the fat gets broken down and absorbed – extra bile is stored in the gallbladder.
As if these functions weren’t enough, the liver also plays a major role in the following:
Metabolizes proteins and carbohydrates so they turn into energy and your body can use them;
Creates immune system factors that help fight against infection;
Create proteins responsible for blood clotting – otherwise we would bleed to death!
Breaks down old and damaged red blood cell;
Balances energy metabolism by converting glycogen to glucose and storing extra glucose by converting it to glycogen. Glycogen is a form of glucose that your body stores mainly in your liver and muscles. Your body needs carbohydrates from the food you eat to form glucose and glycogen.
Makes toxins less harmful to the body and removes them/detoxifies the bloodstream
So you can see how and when, for any reason, the “intelligence” of the liver gets compromised, different kinds of dis-ease may emerge. A compromised liver can mean compromised health on many levels…
