Craving Sugggaaaaarrrrr? Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth!
Do you ever wonder why you crave more sugar and sweet stuff when the weather gets cold? Do you ever find yourself wishing you could curb your sweet tooth so you have a better chance losing, not catching that cold, and staying more fit? You can do something about it. First off, did you know it’s OK to crave more sweet stuff during the winter time? It’s not you, it’s your srotas!!! Because here’s what happens when the weather gets cold – very cold: just like low temperatures slow down and shrink the elements in nature (water freezes), just so it shrinks the physical channels in our bodies, or our srotas. When our channels constrict, things slow down, and guess what happens next? Circulation is blocked or slowed down and vata gets stuck and goes up up up. In addition, metabolic fluids also get slowed down and stuck – agni is stuck and you feel more hungry and crave more sweet heavy somagenic stuff. So you see, it’s not just ok but it’s important to eat more soma rich foods, including sweets, in order to help pacify vata and also feed your agni (metabolic enzymatic fluids). BUT, as Vaidya Mishra reminded us with a laugh, the trick is to eat the healthy fresh pranic stuff – not the chocolate bars, or the cold heavy vata aggravating foods. If you eat un-intelligent food, chances are your agni will not be able to process it and you will make ama – toxic bi-products. And then what? You’ll get the sniffles and a cold! It’s important to eat balanced in ayurvedic terms. Which means what? Have all 6 tastes… 
 
According to the basic principles of Ayurveda, the natural taste of a food item is very important because it gives you information about what it is going to do in your body, what actions it is going to perform once you eat it. This is why, in Ayurveda, food is first and foremost categorized and evaluated according to its taste. In total, there are 6 tastes: madhur (sweet); amla (sour); lavan (salty); katu (pungent); tikt (bitter); kashai (astringent). 
 
The first three tastes are known to be vata pacifying (the sutra says:
tatrādyā māruta ghnanti trayastiktādaya kapham|
kaāyatiktamadhurā pittamanye tu kurvate||171||
the first 3 tastes pacify marut/vata or the air principle. So craving and eating sweet, sour, and salty during winter is actually recommended. Vaidya’s “Sweet Orange and Mango Chutney” contains a balance of both the sweet (madhur) and sour (amla) tastes, and a pinch of Soma Salt too, therefore, it pacifies all vata aspects right away – body and mind. But does this not aggravate kapha dosha – since only the bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes pacify kapha?
Vaidya’s chutney is made of raw sweet mangos that are known to be astringent, and in this recipe, the astringent taste or “kashai rasa” counter-balances the sweet and sour properties of the chutney keeping kapha in balance.
This chutney is also pitta pacifying as the sutra says: “kashai tikt madhura, pitta manyecho kurvate”- astringent, bitter and sweet tastes all pacify pitta. The chutney contains the astringent (kashai) and the sweet (madhura) tastes that pacify pitta.
So, this chutney is actually tridoshic when kapha individuals consume it with perhaps an added chilli or two on the side, and in moderation!
But beyond doshas, this fruit spread is very balanced because it not only contains premium ingredients but these ingredients have been meticulously put together to balance each other out, so for example, the natural pectin binds the micromolecules of the raw organic sugar so the sugar does not go into the system in a fast-forward fashion but rather at a sustained-release pace, so when you consume it you do not get a sugar high and come back for more after you’ve crashed from your high. With the sustained release of sugar, you satisfy your craving and walk away happy with a small amount! The sugar is also balanced by the ascorbic acid and all the other ingredients.
Plus, Vaidya’s chutney is naturally preserved with no hidden sodium or potassium benzoate, no synthetic flavors or colors or aromas. Only nature’s goodness of the most delicious mangoes and sweet oranges in a jar…

1) Antioxidant powerhouse
This disease-fighting fruit is one of the highest ranking, regularly consumed foods for antioxidant content per serving, according to the Cranberry Marketing Committee. Antioxidants protect cells from the damage that oxidative stress and free radicals can have on them. That damage can lead to serious conditions like cancer and heart disease. 
Some of the antioxidants found in cranberries include anthocyanins, ellagic acid, quercetin, resveratrol, selenium, and vitamins A, C and E.

One cup of fresh cranberries contains 46 calories, according to the USDA. If you like them raw, they’re a great low-calorie snack — but their tart flavor makes them an acquired taste. Use them in cooking and baking to add a pop of flavor while not adding a lot of calories, as in these recipes:
4) Urinary tract infection preventer
Cranberries and cranberry juice have long been associated with preventing UTIs. There’s a substance in cranberries that prevents “infection-causing bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls,” according to WebMD.
Study results, however, are very inconsistent. Some studies suggest that cranberries can lower the chance of repeated infections in young women. However, an October 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that female patients in nursing homes who took cranberry capsules for a year didn’t have fewer episodes of UTIs than those who took placebos.
5) High in fiber
One cup of cranberries contains 4.6 grams of dietary fiber. The Mayo Clinic says fiber maintains bowel health, lowers cholesterol, and helps control blood sugar. Foods high in fiber can also help control weight because they make you feel fuller for a longer period of time.
6) Full of Vitamins and Minerals
One cup of cranberries contains 24 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 7 percent of the recommended daily values of vitamins K and E, according to Self Nutrition Data. It’s also a good source of the mineral manganese, containing 20 percent of the recommended daily value.
7) Cardiovascular Disease
Some evidence suggests that the polyphenols in cranberries may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by preventing platelet build-up and reducing blood pressure via anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
8) Research on Cancer
Research has shown that cranberries are beneficial in slowing tumor progression and have shown positive effects against prostate, liver, breast, ovarian, and colon cancers.
9) Supports Dental Health
The same proanthocyanidins in cranberries that help prevent UTIs may also benefit oral health by preventing bacteria from binding to teeth, according to Researchers at the Center for Oral Biology and Eastman Department of Dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Cranberries may also be beneficial in preventing gum disease.
10) Ant-inflammatory Benefits
For the cardiovascular system and for many parts of the digestive tract (including the mouth and gums, stomach, and colon) cranberry has been shown to provide important anti-inflammatory benefits. It’s the phytonutrients in cranberry that are especially effective in lowering our risk of unwanted inflammation, and virtually all of the phytonutrient categories represented in cranberry are now known to play a role. These phytonutrient categories include proanthocyanidins (PACs), anthocyanins (the flavonoid pigments that give cranberries their amazing shades of red), flavonols like quercetin, and phenolic acid (like hydroxycinnamic acids).
11) Immune Support
While research in this area is somewhat limited, recent studies on the immune support benefits of cranberry are exciting. In studies on very small numbers of human participants, intake of cranberry extracts has shown the ability to improve multiple aspects of immune function, and to lower the frequency of cold and flu symptoms in the subjects. In several of these studies, the cranberry extracts were standardized to contain a known, higher-end amount of proanthocyanidins (PACs)—somewhat comparable to a double-strength cranberry juice.
Prunes are Great for you!
Prunes are a great addition to your diet, as they have many health benefits. They carry great benefits with least side-effects – all in moderation always, we thus adopt them fully into our daily diet.
 
Top 11 Benefits of Prunes
1) Helps Digestion
Prunes are high in fiber, which helps prevent hemorrhoids brought on by constipation. Chronic constipation is a common problem in older adults and can be caused by pelvic floor dysfunction or the side effects of medication. It can also be a painful problem for infants. Prune juice acts as a laxative thanks to its high sorbitol content, so ask your doctor if it’s right for you. A serving size of six prunes has 4 grams of dietary fiber, and one-half cup contains 6.2 grams. Women typically need 25 grams of fiber each day, while men need at least 30 grams
2) Aids Normal Body Functions
Prunes are a good source of potassium, an electrolyte that assists in a variety of vital bodily functions. This mineral helps with digestion, heart rhythm, nerve impulses, and muscle contractions, as well as blood pressure. Since the body doesn’t naturally produce potassium, consuming prunes or prune juice can help you avoid deficiencies. One half-cup of prunes contains 637 milligrams of potassium. This accounts for nearly 14 percent of your daily recommended need. Most adults should consume about 4,700 milligrams of potassium a day.
3) Provides a good source of iron
Anemia occurs when the body doesn’t have sufficient healthy red blood cells, which iron helps to make. Shortness of breath, irritability, and fatigue are all signs of mild anemia. Prune juice is a great source of iron and can help prevent and treat iron deficiency. One half-cup of prunes contains 0.81 milligrams of iron, while 1/2 cup of prune juice contains 3 milligrams. The average adult needs 10 milligrams a day, while menstruating or nursing women need 15 milligrams, and pregnant women need 30 milligrams.
4) Builds Bones and Muscles
According to some studies, dried prunes are an important source of the mineral boron. Boron can help build strong bones and muscles. It may also help with improving mental acuity and muscle coordination.
Prunes may be particularly beneficial to fighting the bone density loss that is a common side effect of radiation. A 2016 animal study has found that dried plums and dried plum powder can reduce radiation’s effect on bone marrow, preventing bone density loss and promoting bone health.
Prunes even have some potential as a treatment for osteoporosis. Another recent study presented evidence that dried plums can prevent bone mass loss in postmenopausal women who are prone to osteoporosis. Only 50 grams (or five to six prunes) a day were necessary to see benefits.
5) Reduces Plague Buildup
Plaque buildup in the arteries causes atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the arteries, which can result in a shortage of oxygen and blood to the tissues of the body. If left untreated, this can lead to heart failure, stroke, and heart attack. Research suggests that dried prunes may help slow the development of atherosclerosis. Scientists have shown that eating prunes and drinking prune juice can significantly reduce blood pressure.
Prunes can also be good for overall heart health. A 2010 study reported that blood pressure and hypertension were reduced in groups that were given prunes daily. This finding suggests that prunes can reduce hypertension and boost cardiovascular health.
6) Regulates food intake
Dried plums can help you manage your weight by keeping you feeling full for longer. One study found that eating dried plums as a snack can suppress hunger for longer than a low-fat cookie.
7) Lowers risk of colon cancer
Colon cancer is often hard to detect, but it can be aggressive. Diet can help prevent colon cancer, and research has shown that adding dried plums to your diet may reduce your risk. A recent study conducted by Texas A&M University and the University of North Carolina determined that eating dried plums can positively affect and increase microbiota (or beneficial bacteria) throughout the colon. This, in turn, can reduce the risk of colon cancer.
8) Prunes help to lower cholesterol
The soluble fiber helps to lower cholesterol by soaking up excess bile in the intestine and then excreting it. Bile is made from cholesterol in the liver in order to digest fat. When the body excretes bile along with the fibre from prunes and plums, the liver must use cholesterol in the body to make more bile thereby lowering the amount in circulation in the body. Soluble fibre may also inhibit the amount of cholesterol manufactured by the liver in the first place. A 2011 study found that prunes are more effective than psyllium at relieving constipation.
9) A good source of vitamin K and beta carotene
A 2013 study showed that an increased intake in beta carotene can actually make people happier. Beta-carotene also protects and fixes the damage of free radicals on our cells meaning it can help reverse the signs of aging. Vitamin K works in conjunction with beta carotene to fight the signs of aging by helping reduce bone loss and improving circulation.
10) Improves Vision
Prunes are a great source of vitamin A, essential for healthy vision. Vitamin A deficiency is linked to night blindness, dry eyes, macular degeneration, and cataracts.
11) Aids in managing type 2 diabetes and obesity
Prunes are high in soluble fiber that helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. Soluble fiber slows the rate that food leaves the stomach and, as a result, delays the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. Soluble fiber also increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The soluble fiber in prunes helps you feel satisfied after a meal, which can prevent overeating and subsequent weight gain.

The Fredeen Family’s
Holiday Crusted SVA Casserole
Growing up on Vaidya Mishra’s Shaka Vanshiya Ayurveda (SVA) protocols, we always had to get creative in the kitchen. Finding recipes was sometimes tricky, and even when we did find one, we had to substitute most of the ingredients anyways! Thanksgiving and Christmas was no exception. When everyone around us was eating turkey and mashed potatoes, we had to find something else that felt special, but also worked with the SVA diet.
My Mom found a recipe in the vegetarian cookbook “Heaven’s Banquet” by Miriam Hospodar, called Nut Paté en Croûte. What was so unique about the recipe was that the filling was encased in a pastry. My Mom used the original recipe as a guideline, but ended up changing most of the filling ingredients, and our holiday dish was born!
This recipe has so many memories attached to it because we usually make it as a family. There are so many different parts of the dish, that each family member has claimed one as their expertise. My Dad is in charge of cracking walnuts, my sister makes the pastry, while my Mom and I tackle the filling. We aren’t often in the kitchen all together, so that makes the memories even more precious.
This recipe has gone through multiple iterations, with one version actually setting the oven on fire from the amount of oil we had added that year. We made sure to not make the same mistake again the next time. However, the pastry was particularly well cooked that year!
This version is just one of many possibilities, and it’s a recipe that can be altered to your own preferences. We hope you enjoy it and can create your own memories with this very special recipe!

Ingredients
Step One – Pastry (any double crust pie pastry recipe can be used)
Version One
1 ⅓ cup spelt flour
⅔ cup oat flour
¼ tsp Soma Salt
4 tsp cold ghee
¾ cup cold water
 
Version Two (Less Gluten)
1 cup buckwheat flour
½ cup barley flour
½ cup oat flour
¼ tsp Soma Salt
4 tsp cold ghee
⅔ cup cold water
Step Two – Rice and Quinoa
3 tbsp organic basmati rice
3 tbsp organic quinoa
2 cardamom pods or ground cardamom
¼ tsp Soma Salt
3 cups water
Step Three – Paneer (Fresh Cheese)
2 litres of whole milk
2 limes – juiced
Step Four – Vegetables
1 carrot – grated
1 small zucchini – grated
1 small broccoli – grated
1 tsp ghee
⅛ tsp turmeric
½ tsp fenugreek seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp Mom’s Masala
½ tsp ground black pepper
2 green thai chilis – finely chopped (or replace Mom’s Masala with Spicy Mom’s Masala)
½ tsp Soma Salt
½ pound crumbled paneer approx. (see previous step)
¼ cup hot water
Step Five – Nuts
⅓ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Step Six – Herbs
¼ cup fresh chopped basil or 1 tbsp dried basil
2 tbsp fresh chopped rosemary or 1 tbsp dried rosemary
2 tbsp fresh chopped thyme or 1 tbsp dried thyme
2 tsp ghee
Step Seven – Assemble
½ tsp Soma Salt
½ tsp Mom’s Masala
Instructions – 3 hours approx.
Step One – Pastry
Preheat the oven to 375F (190C).
Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
Add the ghee.
Add cold water slowly and mix until it forms a ball of dough. Add a little extra water if the dough feels too hard.
Wrap in plastic and place in the fridge to keep cool.
Step Two – Rice and Quinoa
Rinse the rice and quinoa before adding to a pot.
Add the water, cardamom and salt.
Cook over a medium heat for approximately 15 minutes until cooked.
Strain out the excess water and set to the side.
Step Three – Paneer
Add the milk to a pot on the stove.
Bring to a boil.
Add the juice from half of a lime and stir. The sourness of the lime juice will cause the milk to separate. If it doesn’t, add the juice from another half lime and stir.
If needed, add the juice from another half lime and stir.
What will happen, is the milk will separate into curds and a greenish liquid called whey.
Once this has happened, strain out the liquid using cheese cloth, or a metal strainer.
Set aside.
Step Four – Vegetables
Peel and grate the carrot, zucchini, and broccoli. You should have approximately 2 cups of grated vegetables when finished.
Heat up a pan over medium heat.
Add the ghee.
Once melted, add the turmeric, fenugreek, cumin, Mom’s Masala, black pepper, and chilis.
Saute all of the spices in the ghee until their aroma is released.
Add the crumbled paneer to the hot spices. Mix it all together.
Add the grated vegetables.
Add the salt and stir.
Cover with a lid and cook for approximately 5 minutes.
Add the hot water for extra moisture.
Take them off of the heat when they are just softened (they will cook a little more in the oven).
Set aside.
Step Five – Nuts
Chop the nuts into small pieces.
Dry toast them in a pan over medium heat until lightly browned.
Set aside.
Step Six – Herbs
Heat the ghee over medium heat in a small saucepan.
Add the herbs.
Saute the herbs in the ghee for about a minute, or until their aroma is released.
Set aside.
Step Seven – Assemble
Mix the rice/quinoa, vegetables, nuts, and herbs together in a large bowl or pot.
Add Soma Salt and Mom’s Masala to taste.
Set aside.
Section off ¼ of the dough and set aside.
Roll the rest of the dough out into a large circle, ¼ inch (5mm) thick.
Line a large bowl with parchment paper. (Alternatively, if you don’t want to use baking paper, you can use a metal colander instead of the bowl. The holes in it help prevent the pastry from suctioning to the sides)
Place the circle of dough into the bowl.
Using a knife, cut away any excess along the top. You can also cut out any folds in the dough, otherwise those thicker areas won’t bake as well.
Spoon the filling into the crust.
Roll out the smaller ball of dough into a circle, large enough to cover the filling.
Place over the filling and pinch to seal thoroughly to the other crust.
Cut away any excess.
Place the tray upside down over the bowl.
Flip them over together so the pastry falls out of the bowl onto the baking tray.
Remove the bowl and parchment paper.
Punch holes into the top of the pastry to allow air out while baking.
Place into the preheated oven (375F/190C) and bake. If using the buckwheat/oat/barley recipe, bake for approximately 40 minutes. If using the spelt/oat recipe, bake for approximately 55 mins, or until the crust is slightly browned.
Take the casserole out of the oven and brush with ghee before serving.
This recipe serves four people.
now, it’s time for the cranberry sauce & THE gravy
Cranberry Sauce
12 oz cranberries – rinsed
1 tbsp ghee
⅛ tsp turmeric
1 tsp whole cloves or ½ tsp ground cloves
1 large cinnamon stick or ½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp fresh ginger – grated
1 ¼ tsp ground black pepper
⅓ cup organic cane sugar
½ cup hot water
⅛ tsp Soma Salt
 
Directions:
Rinse the cranberries.
Heat up a saucepan over medium heat.
Add ghee.
Add turmeric, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper.
Saute the spices in the ghee until their aroma is released into the air.
Add cranberries to the pan and mix together.
Push the cranberries a little to the side of the pan to create a space for the sugar.
Add the sugar and allow it to caramelize slightly on the bottom of the pan before mixing it together with the cranberries.
Add the hot water and salt.
Cover with a lid and put on low heat.
Slowly cook for about 30 minutes, or until desired consistency.
THE Gravy!
Your casserole will not be complete with the gravy. We have 2 versions for your here. One with rice and mung dahl flour; the second with the yuca (cassava) tuber that will give a rich starchy creamy sauce. Colder temperatures at this time of year call for richer foods, and both these recipes will satisfy the appetite without putting out the agni. We love both! See which one you prefer.

Version 1 using Rice Flour & Mung Dahl
1 tsp ghee
½ tsp Mom’s Masala
2 green thai chilis or ¼ tsp ground black pepper (optional)
¼ cup rice flour
2 cups hot water
2 bay leaves
1 tsp ground Mung daal – toasted (optional but delicious)
¼ tsp Soma Salt
1 tbsp olive oil
Direction:
Heat up the ghee in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Add the Mom’s Masala, and chilis/black pepper if desired.
Saute the spices in the ghee until their aroma is released.
Add the rice flour to the spices and toss it in the spices.
Slowly add the hot water, stirring constantly to avoid clumps.
Put on low heat.
Add the bay leaves and ground mung daal (optional) and stir.
Add salt and olive oil.
Allow to simmer for 5 minutes.
Add extra water if needed.
Once you reach your desired consistency, remove from the heat and serve.
Gravy # 2 using Cassava (Yuca tuber)
1 tsp ghee
½ tsp Mom’s Masala
2 bay leaves
2 green thai chilis or ¼ tsp ground black pepper (optional)
¾ cup Yuca – chopped or grated
2 cups hot water
¼ tsp Soma Salt
1 tbsp olive oil
 
Directions:
Heat up the ghee in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Add the Mom’s Masala, bay leaves, and chilis/black pepper if desired.
Saute the spices in the ghee until their aroma is released.
Add Yuca and toss it in the spices.
Add 1 cup of hot water.
Cover with a lid and cook on med/low heat.
After 5 minutes, add 1 more cup of hot water and put on low heat.
Add olive oil and salt.
Cover and keep cooking for approximately 20 minutes until the Yuca melts into a sauce.
Use a whisk or a fork to break up clumps as it cooks.
Add more hot water if necessary.
Once you reach your desired consistency, remove from the heat and serve. ENJOY!

11 uses of Tribindu
  1. Sinus Support: discourages bacterial growth and support your sinus cavity when inhaled. Spray it on a scarf and gently inhale. Keep away from your eyes. 
  2. Sore achy tight muscles: spray on muscles and gently massage in before or after exercise to mobilize and evacuate toxic build-up and enhance mobility;
  3. Relax tightness in the neck and shoulders: spray it on your neck and shoulder areas to ease tightness and soreness
  4. Stiff joint support: spray it on knees, elbows, wrists, ankles, finger joints etc – morning and evening to help local detox in your joints and ease off stiffness; 
  5. Supports circulation in hands and feet: spray once into a water bath for your feet and massage in: when you experience fatigue, poor circulation; cold hands and feet; Tribindu is thermogenic and will warm you up right away! 
  6. Keep your body warm: specially in cold weather when things tend to slow down and freeze up, apply on hands, feet, and lower back to keep the physical and vibrational channels open and flowing for improved overall body warmth.
  7. Ward off insects and bugs: mosquitoes don’t like the smell of tribindu! Have it handy and spray on a scarf and wear around your neck to ward the off!
  8. Sanitize and prevent infection: apply on your toe and finger nails after clipping them to ward off the chance of infections;
  9. Uplift and pacify the mind: Tribindu pacifies Vata dosha through its thermogenic properties and support kapha dosha by improving circulation – it’s your best friend in the winter time and in cold weather; and when you are feeling vata-ed out or stuck and stiff!
  10. Anti-bacterial air-freshener: spray it in your room – on your couch, carpet, desk, or just in the air – keep away from your eyes. All the ingredients in this formula help remove bad odors through their “krimigni” or anti-bacterial properties. You can also use with it with an essential oil diffuser.
  11. Ward off mold and fungus: through its potent bactericidal properties this formula can be used in area where there is mold and fungus growth. Spray on directly (carpets, upholstery; drawers; nooks and crannies!) – 2-3 times a day. 
CAUTION: if you inadvertently get the spray in your eyes, rinse with cool/cold water and it will wash off easily and immediately. 
3 Drops plus 1:
Tribindu withTulsi!
Tribindu was one of Vaidya Mishra’s all-time favorite formulations. Tribindu is a powerful remedy with only 3 simple ingredients – as the name “tri” (three) “bindu” (drop) indicates. Vaidya Mishra improved it one step further by adding Tulsi, or Holy Basil. What’s in Tribindu? Camphor, Ajwain, and Peppermint. Plus Tulsi – you can choose the one you prefer. Why these ingredients? Modern science confirms the anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties of all these ingredients. This formula was used extensivly as it is safe and effective, to disinfect insect or mosquito bites or help the body cope with infections caused by external factors – specially in extreme cold weather temperatures. In low temperatures the body’s physical circulatory channels constrict and can trap ama (or toxins) and become prone to infections – inhaling the Tribindu formulation by spraying it on a piece of cloth/cotton not only helps dilate the channels and support overall immunity – but the ingrediens also open channels improve circulation and aid in the release of toxins easily and readily. This formula was also used during monsoon, or the rainy season in India, to help protect against water and air-borne infections. The SVA ancestors also used the Tribindu mixture for overall body aches, muscle stiffness, sprains, etc. Let’s find out what the shastras or ancient ayurvedic texts have to say about the three – plus one – ingredients in Tribindu. 
The first ingredient in Tribindu is Ajwain (Trachyspermum copticum). 
Three prominent nighantu-s or commentaries have described the powerful bactericidal and thermogenic effects of Ajwain. 
The Dhanvantri nighantu says: 
This means Ajwain is “victorious” over the “krimi”s or bacteria. Then “vahnideepanee” means ignites or “deepani,” the “vani” or metabolic fire of the body – and thus creates thermogenesis. 
The Raj nighantu, on the other hand, says it is “krimi mardini” as well as “deepani para:” again bactericidal and thermogenic. 
The popular commentator Bhav prakash says Ajwain is: “tikshoshna” sharp and hot, and “deepani” and “krimi pranut” – thermogenic, bactericidal, and penetrating. 
The second ingredient in Tribindu is Karpur or camphor (Cinamomum camphora). The Dhanvantri Nighantu describes it as:
The third ingredient is Peppermint or 
pootinah(Mentha piperita). The Raj Nighantu says it is: 

Udan Vata Prasharak
Transdermal Support for Lungs, Chest, Vocal Chords….
Clear and balance the Srotas & Nadis of the Lungs 
Udana Vata is the sub-dosha that governs the chest area. Udan means ‘upward flow’. Udana Vata’s job is to ensure that the pranic energy flows upward and also in balance and rhythm with the cosmic ‘A’ vibration, that helps create speech, sound, voice, and regulate the chest area. Udan Vata Prasharak Roll-on naturally supports this upward flow via a fast-acting synergistic blend of herbs and spices. After application on the chest and or back shoulders’ area, it immediately goes to work to open and clear the nadis (subtle vibrational energy channels) as well as the srotas (physical channels) that govern the upper chest and lungs. It’s especially useful when udana vata becomes blocked and its movement obstructed by shleshma – a sticky mixture of shleshaka kapha and ama (heavy toxins). When the nadis that govern the chest are clear and open, this blockage starts getting released for balance and ease in the physical respiratory channels.

‘SVA Udan Prasharak Herbal Synergy’ (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary herbal blend) with Prasarini (Paederia foetida), Pushkarmool (Inula racemose), Devil’s Apple (Solanum linnaeanum), Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Black Pepper (Piper nigrum), Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), Green Chili (Capsicum annuum), Boswellia – Sallaki Guggulu (Boswellia serrata), Peppermint (Mentha piperita), Benzoin (Styrax Benzoin), All spice (Pimenta dioica), Clary sage (Salvia sclarea), Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), Grapefruit, Sweet orange, in a base of Vegetable Glycerin, with Beeswax(Cera alba), and distilled water.

Directions
Apply and rub in on the upper chest area, including the full area under the clavicles. Also rub on your upper spine with a downward swiping motion. Women should avoid the delicate areas of the breast tissue. Apply twice per day. (You may need assistance to apply on upper back.)
Best used under the guidance of a Shaka Vansiya Ayurveda practitioner. As with all herbs, please consult your physician before using.

Re-Ignite Your Divine Light
How else can you dispel darkness except by turning on the light? Even a small flame can brighten the thickest obscurity. This week we celebrate the Vedic “festival of lights” or Diwali. Traditionally, Diwali is the celebration of the day Lord Raam returned to his kingdom, Ayodhya, with his wife Seeta and brother Laxmana, after 14 years of exile. It marks the end of a long period of strife and misfortune, and ushers in all things auspicious. In the spirit of Diwali, we too can re-ignite the light – within us and around us. Choose the beautiful, the right, the good, no matter how small our effort, and stick with it. Initiate the good routine and actions you’ve always wanted to stick with but kept delaying and excusing yourself out of. This is the time. Set up your daily routine and ritual, and go baby-steps. This week we offer you beautiful hand-made pure silver tools to support you in your daily celebration of life and yogic practice. For starters – Vaidya’s favorite mala made from 54 Lotus seeds set in pure silver. Blue Lotus seeds are considered to be highly auspicious for meditation. They are full of Soma and are thus grounding and calming to the mind. Their somagenic property soothes and cools off the mind and heart. These lotus beads have been carefully selected and capped in Sterling Silver to bring you the best possible yogic experience.

Use the Blue Lotus Seed Mala to repeat a mantra or a chant, and step beyond the limiting confines of the mind into the light of your heart. Daily practice – even if just for 5 minutes – will strengthen heart and mind. This will charge up your mala and when you wear it, you carry the vibrational charge. This is an age-old time-tested practice we are fortunate to be able to adopt in our modern days.
Or you may want to usher in more light into your home and life by adding the Kuber Kolam to your sacred space or puja table. Yantras are geometric patterns that invite and hold specific energies and resonances. The Kuber Kolam is a yantra, a vedic geometric diagram in the form of a grid containing the numbers 20-28 arranged in such an order that all lines, whether read horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, add up to 72. 
The SVA Kuber Kolam in pure Sterling Silver is an auspicious object that will help you usher in wealth and prosperity when established in the North East corner of your residence. You can recite the Kuber mantra when installing your yantra or play the Kuber mantra – as recited by Vaidya Mishra – in the background, on soft volume. In Vedic culture, Lord Kuber is recognized as the initiator of wealth and prosperity. He is the celestial treasurer of the riches of the universe. In an ancient story narrating the marriage of Lord Vishnu (as Venkateshwara) to Padmavati, he is said to have advanced all the money needed to pay for the lavish wedding expenses. Lord Vishnu remained in his debt; hence, to this day, devotees go to the Tirupati temple in South India to donate money in Venkateshwara’s Hundi – “donation pot” – is so that he can pay it back to Kuber! 
He appears in many ancient Vedic texts with many different epithets: he enjoys the title of “king of the whole world”, “king of kings” (Rajaraja), “Lord of wealth” (Dhanadhipati) and “giver of wealth” (Dhanada). Kubera is also called Guhyadhipa (“Lord of the hidden”). He is also “dikpala” or protector of the North direction although he is also sometimes associated with the East – it is thus good to install his yantra in the North-East corner of your residence. The Atharvaveda calls him the “god of hiding.” In the Manusmriti, he becomes a respectable Loka-pala or “world protector,” and the patron of merchants. In the epic Mahabharata, Kuber is described as the son of Prajapati Pulastya ,and his wife Idavida and the brother of sage Vishrava.The Puranas and the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana grant Kuber unquestioned “godhood” – executer of the laws of Nature that usher in wealth and prosperity. He is also known as Loka-pala – “world protector.” As the treasurer of the riches of the universe, he is known to have Laxmi Devi’s express blessings, and is usually remembered during Diwali, or the Autumn Festival of Lights in India. Installing Kuber’s Kolam is considered to be highly auspicious.

An Abhyanga A week
Oftentimes we get so caught up in our daily race for things and events that we lose perspective. Specially when life gets stressful – collectively – the way it has in these unprecedented times. Feels like no matter which way we turn there is no exit! Now more than ever, it’s good to take a moment to re-adjust our focus and remind ourselves: we live in a cosmic reality that pre-existed us and that will continue to be here long after we’ve gone… This reality supersedes us. Our lives are a small part of this reality, and our bodies are a material expression of the same elements of Nature that make up this reality. We run on the same laws that Mother Nature put into place to regulate the “rising” of the sun and the cycles of the moon. All we have to do is stay in-sync. Maintaining our relationship to the world we live in does not have to be a big deal. It can come down to very simple daily principles. Such as following the daily cycles of the sun for eating and sleeping. Or staying in sync with seasonal changes for diet.
 In Western culture, we have lost sight of rituals that help us reset our bodies and maintain our health and happiness. Our seasonal and annual rituals sadly amount to nothing more than commercialized holidays! But for those of us who have been blessed to have the wisdom of Ayurveda, and specially the SVA teachings of Vaidya Mishra in our lives, we know how small yet significant dietary and lifestyle changes can bring about great(er) balance and bliss.
Now more than ever, we need to refer back to these rituals to help us surf the big waves of these transformative times. Start with something as simple as a weekly or biweekly self-oil massage. Nothing helps calm the nervous system, settle the mind, soothe the heart, like a warm oil massage. The ayurvedic texts and ancient rishis were unwavering about this. 
Nowhere is the science of ayurvedic transdermal healing better illustrated than in the chapter on Abhyanga. Abhyanga is the time-tested ancient method of massaging the body with warm herbalized oils to make the limbs supple, relax and energize the mind, building resistance to physical and mental stress. What does the sourcebook of Ayurveda, the Carak Samhita, say about self-abhyanga?
snehābhyaṅgādyathā kumbhaścarma snehavimardanāt| 
bhavatyupāṅgādakṣaśca dṛḍhaḥ kleśasaho yathā|| 
(ca. saṁ. 5/85)
With proper oil, abhyanga gives the skin firmness even as it makes it soft. In the second sentence we read that all body parts (anga) become more efficient, firm and more tolerant against physical stress.
tathā śarīramabhyaṅgāddṛḍhaṁ sutvak jāyate| 
praśāntamārutābādhaṁ kleśavyāyāmasaṁsaham||
(ca. saṁ. 5/86)
So the first line of the verse says “doing full-body massage gives more strength and better complexion to the skin. The second line tells us that abhyanga pacifies all vata disturbance and gives more endurance for exercise.”
sparśane’bhyadhiko vāyuḥ sparśanaṁ ca tvagāśritam| 
tvacyaśca paramabhyaṅgastasmāttaṁ śīlayennaraḥ||
(ca. saṁ. 5/87)
Here Carak explains that if there is sensitivity of skin created by vata dosha imbalance, then it will get pacified, and acquire better tolerance to touch pressure. In addition, massage nurtures all six layers of skin. The health of the skin, its lustre and suppleness improve even more with regular weekly massage. Overall, all vata-pacifying health benefits accrue with daily or weekly oil massage sessions.
Which Oil to Use?
Over the years Vaidya formulated several SVA massage oils to address different constitutional types and their needs. You don’t need to use SVA formulations, as long as you have good massage oils appropriate for your constitution and the season, provided they do not have any chemicals or a chemical preservation system. You also have to make sure your massage oil has not been adulterated. Finally, there is a high chance that it is, or soon will be after opening, rancid and active with free-radical causing molecules in your body through transdermal absorption. 
Vaidya Mishra’s SVA massage oils undergo pranic prepping and preservation methods that stop oxidization without compromising the intelligence of the oil base or the herbal infusions. We have a wide range of oils to chose from:

How It’s Done!
Warm your oil slightly in the sink by keepin under hot running water, or in a baby bottle warmer – this calms and pacifies the body and mind right away, also facilitating absorption. to give more comfort and absorption. Pour a little warm oil into your palms and apply it onto the area you are working on. It’s a good idea to start from the feet and the toes first. Work your way up, and massage your entire body, applying even pressure with the whole hand — palm and fingers. 
Finally, oil your head. Use one of our SVA oils made especially for hair and scalp. Warm it up as well. When massaging sensitive areas such as the abdomen or the heart, use very light pressure. Circular motions on chest area are best done clockwise; same for the lower abdomen. Do circular motions over rounded areas such as head and joints, and straight strokes on your arms and legs. For arms and legs massage outward from core to extremities. 
Leave the oil on for 20 minutes. Cover yourself. You may leave the oil on for longer but you must cover your head with a cotton scarf or towel and make sure you warm and stay away from cold drafts. The longer the oil is on, the deeper it penetrates. 
It is very important to follow your abhyanga with a relaxing warm bath (Vaidya has formulated lovely herbalized bath pouches) or shower to remove excess oil and toxins that got released through the skin. 
When you want to do an abhyanga, but don’t have time, do the quicky version: massage only arms and legs and your lower back. It is ideal to indulge in a full body massage, at least once a week; but if it is just not happening, it is then best to at least get a quick massage on your limbs and lower back.
Once you’ve completed your abhyanga and bath/shower, finish off by adding a drop of Karna oil in your ear canal (or apply a drop on a q-tip and apply at the entrance of ear canal); and do the same with one of Vaidya nasya oil for each nostril. Oil not only helps keep away impurities but will address dryness due to cooler temperatures, and help protect from airborne contaminants depending on the herbal synergy of the oils.
Precautions: Oil is slippery. Take extra precaution in your shower to avoid slipping after doing an abhyanga. Oils can be combustible on towels, clothing, etc. with oil residue. After washing, do not over-dry or over-heat them in your dryer.

Now more than ever we realize that our eyes ARE our most prized organ since we literally cannot function without the live video streaming technology to get through our daily activities of work, education, communication, and even leisure. In addition, at this time of year, if we don’t initiate a gentle autumnal detox, heat may get trapped in our bodies and throw off the doshic balance in our eyes. The eyes are run by several sub-doshas, but “alochak pitta” is the primary subdosha to address when trying to keep your eyes healthy. Alochak pitta works in tandem with all other four pitta sub-dosha-s that govern our body: pachaka in the stomach, ranjaka in the liver, sadhaka in the heart, and bhrajaka in the skin. Alochaka, however, shares a special relation with ranjaka and sadhaka. In this sense, if one of them those go off, the likelihood of the others going off is greater. We’ve all been trying to stay cool and emotionally composed in these difficult days in addition to having to spend so much more time on our computers zoom-ing away for meetings. So what can you do to keep your eyes healthy? Since we have no choice but to expose them so much more to EMF screens and devices these days?
For one, Vaidya made an exquisite eye-drop. This is a must-have, specially for heavy computer users. If you experience dry, itchy, red eye, use this 3-5 times a day to soothe and refresh your eyes.
Otherwise, there are several things that Vaidya Mishra recommended generally.
Diet: is always key for pacifying subdoshas, and particularly so for pitta. Avoiding pitta-aggravating sour, pungent, acidic foods, salty foods. Add lots of colorful vegetables (beets, carrots, leafy greens), as well as seasonal sweet juicy fruits (pomegrenate, guava, pineapple, papapay) to your diet now. This can work wonders. Also, do not skip or delay meals, as this will help keep pachak pitta in balance in the stomach.
Take care of sadhak and ranjak pitta: taking care of your sadhak pitta and ranjak pitta can work wonders for the care of your eyes. Sadhak pitta governs the heart, and processes our emotions and thoughts. Ranjak pitta governs the liver and processes the food we ingest. Making sure that both sadhaka and ranjaka are cool and balanced will help support the eyes.
All the things that help keep your emotions happy and healthy will keep your sadhak pitta in balance: from garnering positive mental habits to avoiding horror movies; or going to bed on time and making sure you get some laughs and down time daily – you can keep sadhak pitta in check. Ranjak pitta gets affected by mental and emotional predisposition as much as bad food, and stress. So putting attention on managing your life and diet will help keep ranjak pitta in check.
An excellent nourishing classical ayurvedic formula of great help for the eyes is Triphala - whether taken internally or apply transdermally. Triphala is well-known for its three-dosha pacifying, detoxifying and nurturing effect on the eyes. Triphala is made of 3 fruits as its name indicates: Amalaki, Haritaki, and Bhibitaki. Amalaki is a wonder of its own. Whether used transdermally or taken orally, it pacifies ALL pitta subdoshas and supports the body’s alkalinity and boosts immunity. Try it in Vaidya’s Nectar drops’ form, or chyawanprash, or tablets. Otherwis, Vaidya’s Triphala Ghee is made with Mom’s Ghee. Ghee made in the traditional method is particularly considered best for the eyes, because ghee carries a balanced amount of soma and agni. When Triphala is infused in the ghee (apply on the orb of the eyes) it becomes nectar for the eyes! It will then not only nurture but also pacify alochak pitta and support alochak agni.
But there is still more you can do! ALA for the eyes: have you heard of Alpha Lipoic Acid cream which is great for eye care? Due to chronological aging, or the extensive drying effect of EMF on the eyes, the circulation of blood to the optic nerve and retina gets slowed down. Alpha Lipoic Acid has been shown to have the specific beneficial ability to enhance and support blood supply to nerves endings. The eyes being an agneya organ (fiery and hot), ALA is ideal for soothing without overheating or stimulating the eyes further even as it enhances blood flow and circulation. Ideally, if you have tired sore eyes, it is great to do the marma protocol at night with SVA Triphala ghee, and then, in the morning, do the marma treatment with the ALA cream. The ALA cream is also a great cream to use for eye care and eye marma massage, as it works like a gentle non-greasy facial cream base. You can do the eye marma massage with ALA and then continue your usual SVA facial marma massage with Lalita’s Facial oil or Age-defying cream.
Finally, minimize the use of toxic chemically ladden make-up items such as eyeliners, and eyeshadows, etc. If you love Vaidya Mishra’s eyeliner, you will love it even more in its new format.

What does SV Ayurveda say about Hair?

In Asia, mothers have long used the dried Garcinia rinds for chutneys or curries, and sometimes as an aid for stomach problems. But in the late 1960s, scientists identified a substance in the rind of the fruit called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which has made it a revolutionary supplement, currently still a rage in America, Japan, Europe, and other western countries – ever since it aired on the Dr Oz show in late 2012. Its active ingredient, a derivative of citric acid, called hydrocytric acid or HCA, hinders the work of citrate lyase in the body. Citrate lyase is the enzyme responsible for changing carbohydrates into fatty acids. By halting the carbohydrate conversion process, HCA blocks fat and produces weight loss.
But hear this: HCA has also been found to be a serotonin booster – this brain chemical regulates mood, appetite and sleep. Elevated levels tend to curb hunger and eliminate food cravings. By lifting depression, serotonin reduces the emotional eating that leads to overweight. Do you love it already? But wait there’s more!

What does Ayurveda say about this fruit? 
Ayurveda reminds us that for total health we need to consume food ingredients that balance all the dosha-s or tissues, “samadoshaha,” and enhance metabolism overall in the body in a balanced way, in Sanskrit “samagnischa.” The Garcinia fruit carries these 2 highly desirable properties in addition to many more. It is because of these that it helps clean the fat tissue and can result in weight loss. It is because it is good for overall total metabolism and a toxin free body that it can help individuals who are trying to detox their fat tissue. And there is an added bonus here as well, because when Garcinia supports the fat tissue, it is also supporting the bone tissue since good fat is food for the bone tissue.
Garcinia indica – also known as Garcinia cambogia (“vrikshamla” in Sanskrit) – is mentioned in the ayurvedic “nighantu”-s (or glossaries) as a vata and kapha dosha pacifying dravya or food ingredient.

It is known to enhance absorption due to its thermogenic potency; to sharpen the taste buds, clearing away ama or toxic build-up in the oral cavity; and to make the body lighter because it carries the following 3 rasa-s or tastes: amla (sour), katu (pungent) and kashai (astringent). These 3 rasa-s enhance metabolism in general. More specifically, the amla rasa or sour taste also enhances and supports protein metabolism because it enhances agni in the mamsa dhatu or muscle tissue. In addition, the 3 rasa-s together help clear and unclog the channels too.
Garcinia’s first property is “amla” or sour, and we know that the sour taste is “agneya” or thermogenic. Due to this property, it pacifies kapha in all the 7 “dhatu”-s or tissues. But it also pacifies thirst because it pacifies vata in the stomach, samana vata, as well as in the chest or udana vata. In general, it is a wonderful fruit that balances the entire stomach and all the dosha-s in the stomach, enhancing coordination amongst them all: samana vata, pachak pitta, and kledak kapha – the 3 principles which support digestion: a) movement of space and air in the stomach; b) enzymatic levels; c) lubrication levels. When the stomach dosha-s are balanced, so many aspects of overall health also follow suit.
But yet another great attribute of this fruit is that it helps produce ama free rasa dhatu, or the very first dhatu or tissue that gets formed after we eat. In general, many health imbalances arise from just this, that an individual makes ama or toxins from the food they ingest. Rasa dhatu is the foundation for all the dhatus, and if it is free of toxins and balanced, all the other tissues that get built on this foundational dhatu or tissue will also be more balanced.

The benefits of friendly bacteria or probiotics have been recognized in Ayurveda for thousands of years. In the SVA lineage they are called yogini-s. Here is a verse from Bhav Mishra’s Bhav Prakash that discusses the properties of thakra or buttermilk: 
It’s grahi: so it enhances absorption. That is: it enhances the absorption of minerals and nutrients. It has two main rasa-s or tastes: kashay (astringent) and amla (sour), and its vipak or post-digestive effect is madhur. These properties create lightness in the body, particularly since its potency is warm and it enhances the digestive and metabolic fires. Thakra or fresh buttermilk also increases the reproductive fluids; it enhances the pranic flow in the cellular system; and it pacifies cellular vata. When people have chronic mal-absorption of any kind, it’s the best healthy addition to the diet, because of the unique combination of properties, nurturing yet creating lightness in the body.
Garcinia Thakra Recipe
Vaidya Mishra recommends making fresh buttermilk by combining 20% fresh yogurt with 80% water (room temperature). Blend for 5 minutes in the blender, take out the foam top, add ½ tsp Garcinia chutney and blend for another 2-3 minutes. Enjoy!
Make sure to drink only with lunch not dinner. Best is to have a sip and then a bite. Remember: the combination of this thakra and Garcinia as a chutney is the best way to balance weight – not just to lose weight, but to maintain a balanced overall weight. For balanced tissues and metabolism all throughout your body.

Fruity Tangy Chutneys & Preserves to Balance your Meals; plus: Enliven the Shakti Within – a Workshop! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Oct 8, 2020 – #39, Vol 10

Did you know that consuming sweet juicy raw fruits in Autumn is not a good idea? Some exceptions are of course to be considered – pomegranates, pineapple, papaya, and guava-s are ok but other fruits full of soma such as mangoes, cherries, melons, etc, are not ok. When the weather cools off in Autumn, our digestive fire undergoes a change in response to the climate and we have to adjust our diet accordingly. If we don’t and we continue to eat things that are full of soma, such as heavy fruits, our bodies will end up making “ama” – a cold heavy bi-product of semi-digested food. Ama can cause body aches, stiffness, foggy mind, heavy heart, and if left unchecked, can also result in other chronic inflammatory conditions. But come on, who doesn’t want to continue eating juicy sweet fruits into the Autumn? Specially if you are still craving them. Is your craving misleading you then? Not necessarily. That’s why Ayurveda teaches us to cook our fruits. In the summertime, it’s ok to relish them raw, but come Autumn, better to cook them with a piece of cinnamon, or a couple of cloves. Cooking is – at its most basic – the simple act of adding agni to support digestion. You are heating/cooking therefore making more digestible. And we know that this is the best way of consuming fruits when the weather cools off. A little cooking goes a long way. But you can take things to the next level and add spices and condiments. Your imagination is the limit to the preserves, chutneys, jams, that you can make. 
The best part then is that it’s not reserved for breakfast unlike what we have been bred to think. In the vedic tradition, we have special preparations where fruits can be enjoyed along with your main meal at lunch time, or with your dinner as well. Ayurvedic chutneys and preserves may contain some spices or be prepared in such as way so you can enjoy them with any meal any time of day 365 days a year. 
Vaidya Mishra made these delicious preserves and chutneys to help us balance our bodies, hearts, and minds! They complement any meal or can be consumed on their own with some crackers. The Amla Tamarind Chutney is an excellent tomato substitute that can be used for cooking stews or with baked fries – tastes like ketchup looks like ketchup but it ain’t ketchup! It’s best with paneer or other proteins, as the amla helps break down protein molecules and the tamarind supports overall digestion. Choose one or get the sampler basket of all.
