Why does Your Hair Fall Out & What Can you Do About It?
I’ve treated many cases of hair loss during my 35 years of practicing Ayurveda. People usually think that it’s mainly men who lose their hair, but I have seen many many women and even children lose their hair as well. 
If it is a genetic hair loss, then it will be very hard to treat. But there are many other reasons besides genetics for hair loss and if you can figure out all of the underlying causes. When it is not hereditary/genetic, then there might be a good chance that the hair can grow back.
My teacher Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra taught me how to treat all health conditions, including hair loss. He always reminded me to start by determining the underlying cause and he told me that there are usually multiple underlying imbalances associated with every health problem we encounter. 
And that’s one of the big problems we see in treating all diseases. Many people, including doctors, are looking for that one underlying cause of the specific disease that patient is presenting with, but it’s never that straight-forward: remember that each individual is unique PLUS our bodies entertain many imbalances over the course of a lifetime, and it’s best to identify all those at the root and address them before they develop into greater chronic imbalances and get set in, and then it becomes harder to correct.
What are some of the common causes of hair loss?
First, remember that the health of the hair reflects the health of your bone tissue. This means that if your bones are weak your hair might be also, since the hair (and the nails) are considered the malas (waste bi-products) of the bone in Ayurveda. Keep in mind your bones can be malnourished even if you haven’t been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis. It’s actually much more common than you think.
So what could cause bone weakness? Well, lack of good quality whole non-homogenized milk, since whole milk is one of the most nourishing food for the bones. Many people in this country have no animal milk in their diet, or if they do it’s usually low fat or skim. But it’s the fat in the milk that delivers the calcium into the bones, so if you drink low fat milk the calcium will go in one end and out the other, never making its way to the bones. 
Also, the cows must be grass-fed in order to make omega 3-s in their milk. Most of the cows in this country are fed grains and their milk contains omega-6, which can be quite harmful to our health over time. 
Plus, the milk needs to be boiled in order to melt the fat down so it can absorb into the bloodstream properly. And finally, milk should either be taken on an empty stomach or cooked into a grain. It does not mix well with other types of foods such as meats, fresh fruits and vegetables.  
So skip the oats soaked overnight in cold milk and instead cook your oatmeal with milk and spices, such as whole cardamom pods and a cinnamon stick which help you digest the protein and sugar in the milk. And you could put dried fruit such as raisins or dates in with the milk, but not fresh fruit, as it will upset your stomach.
How about calcium supplements? We recommend calcium from the ocean, such as coral and pearl, which are alive with prana, nature’s healing vibration, unlike the dumb and dead synthetic calcium supplements on the market, many of which have been made in a lab, devoid of this very important healing energy. The coral has been burnt into an ash repeatedly for a few months to make the calcium molecule so small it can absorb into the bones. Most calcium supplements on the market have a difficult time absorbing since the molecule is too big.
The bone tissue is a living tissue with old bone cells breaking down and new bone cells being added to the bones every day. It’s kind of like a scaffolding with a hard matrix of calcium salts deposited around protein fibers. The bone matrix consists of tough protein fibers, mainly collagen, that become hard and rigid due to the calcium and other minerals that adhere to it. The minerals make the bone hard and stiff and the collagen proteins give the bone its flexibility, and elasticity. So don’t forget that your bones need not only minerals such as calcium, but the collagen fibers also need to be nourished.
To nourish the collagen in the bones, you could try supplementing your diet with bone broth, if you are not a vegetarian. Simmering the bones over an extended period of time will extract the minerals, collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin out of the bones. As the bones simmer for 12-24 hours in water, parsley, celery, salt, pepper and thyme, the nutrients are released into the water in a form your body can absorb and are very nourishing for the bones. Many people are surprised to hear that the ancient doctors of India prescribed bone broth to heal both the bones and the bone marrow deep inside.

Thinning hair can also be a result of a lack of iron in the diet, which can occur if the diet is too low in iron (this is especially common in a vegetarian diet) or if the person is losing too much blood. This happens quite often from a heavy menstrual flow every month.
There are great herbal combinations to prevent too much blood loss during your cycle — herbs which recalibrate the ratio between estrogen and progesterone, and there are lots of iron-rich foods you could add to your diet, such as black mission figs, raisins, dates, blackstrap molasses, prunes, dried apricots, cooked greens, and cooked beets.
Ayurveda also recommends the use of iron bhasmas, which are Ayurvedically prepared iron supplements processed through repeated incinerations to aid in the absorption of the iron into the cells in the same way the calcium and other minerals are prepared.
The ancient doctors of India wrote in their Ayurvedic textbooks that we need something from an animal everyday in our diets. So vegetarians must make sure they are getting plenty of milk and milk products, such as yogurt, panir and other freshly made soft-curd cheeses. Many people who lose their hair are deficient in animal protein since, as stated before, the matrix of the bones is made of collagen, which is from animal protein.
And don’t forget: the fat tissue transforms into the bone tissue, so you must eat plenty of good healthy fats in the diet to nourish both your fat and bone tissues: fats such as cultured ghee made from grass-fed cow butter, organic cold-pressed olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds.
Sometimes after a big stressor people will lose their hair. This is because the cortisol that they release from the adrenal glands during the period of stress both loosens the hair follicles, allowing the hair to fall out and disturbs the hair growth cycle, causing less hair growth. Once the stress is over or if you have learned ways to deal better with the stress, then the hair will usually grow back.
We use various versions of Ashwagandha in Ayurveda to prevent the release of too much cortisol when we’re under stress.
If the thyroid is weak the bones will suffer and the hair will fall out. There could be numerous reasons for a weak thyroid, such as fluoride in the drinking water, which is a poison to the thyroid. Drinking fluoridated water over the years will depress the entire function of the thyroid gland, causing the hair to fall out. Fluoride also disrupts normal bone formation, which could be another cause of thinning hair. In one study women in a high fluoride community had double the fracture risk of women in a low fluoride community. 
Also mercury depresses thyroid function. Even low levels of mercury may lead to thyroid inflammation, hypothyroidism and depression as the mercury binds to the sites on the thyroid gland that the iodine is supposed to bind to. Mercury is found in immunizations, especially the flu shot, in many species of fish, in old dental fillings, and in the air pollution, especially if you live near coal-powered plants. The thyroid gland is the only gland that uses iodine, so any iodine that comes into the body gets sucked up by the thyroid gland and is used in making the thyroid hormones. But mercury looks similar to iodine, so when it comes into the body, the thyroid actually prefers the mercury over the iodine creating either a hypothyroid or a hyperthyroid condition, both of which can make the hair fall out. 
A large part of the hypothyroid cases I see everyday in my practice are caused by these heavy metals and the vast majority of the autoimmune diseases of the thyroid, Grave’s Disease and Hashimoto’s, present with an overload of these two heavy metals. Think twice before drinking fluoridated water — most filters won’t filter it out and you can’t even remove it even if you boil the water. And if you must get the flu shot for your job ask for the one which doesn’t contain mercury — I have treated hundreds of cases of autoimmune thyroid disease which developed after receiving the flu shot every year resulting in high mercury levels disrupting (or “torturing”) as Vaidya Mishra used to call it, the thyroid gland.
So in these cases, the answer isn’t to give thyroid hormones, as they will actually put the thyroid into hibernation since it’s no longer called upon to make its hormones. Instead you have to chelate out the fluoride and/or mercury using remedies based on cilantro- cilantro is excellent for pulling out heavy metals and evacuating them from the body. Then you have to strengthen the thyroid gland using various herbs and herb formulas recommended from ancient times.
In the case of autoimmune thyroid diseases you must direct your therapies towards fixing the misguided immune system, which means focusing your attention on healing the friendly bacteria in the gut, the liver and the bone marrow. At the same time you’re healing the immune system, you have to also support the thyroid gland to perk it back up. 
Nowadays our immune systems are severely compromised from taking too many pharmaceuticals which disrupt these 3 parts of the immune system. See my book Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda for a more in-depth discussion on how to heal the immune system to effectively reverse autoimmune diseases.
There are other causes of thyroid weakness: if Vata goes high, if the diet is too light, such as a raw foods diet or a vegan diet, if you go to bed past 10:00 PM, or if you’re constantly rushing through the day. All this activity and rushing wears out both the thyroid and the adrenal glands. And if you are in a constant state of aggravated Vata, multitasking your way through the day, then the adrenal glands will dump out cortisol, their stress hormone, which shuts down the thyroid gland. 
And birth control pills totally disable the thyroid gland as these chemicals infiltrate into the blood. This is because they deplete selenium, zinc and the amino acid tyrosine from our bodies. These are all the vitamins and minerals that are necessary for proper thyroid function. 
And the high doses of estrogen contained in the birth control pills increase the activity of TBG (Thyroxine Binding Globulin), which binds thyroid hormone. This causes lower levels of free thyroid hormone available for use by the body. Here’s an analogy I always use when counseling on the thyroid gland: we make the thyroid hormone, but it travels around the body in an automobile (bound to TBG) and just circulates around until it is needed. Once the body signals that it needs more thyroid hormone, it has to let go of the TBG, or get out of the car, so it can absorb into the cells and have its desired effects. When TBG is high, as is the case while taking the birth control pill, the body is asking for the circulating thyroid hormone, but it can’t get out of the car! Then your body suffers the consequences of low thyroid function.
So now that we’ve figured out some of the most common reasons for hair loss and have addressed these issues,  we can start talking about what to do for regrowing the hair. But a cautionary note: If you just take these remedies for hair growth without focusing on what is causing the hair to fall out in the first place, you won’t get very far.
We have lots of herbal formulas for hair growth which can be taken both orally and wonderful herbalized hair oils which can nourish the hair follicle and encourage the growth of the hair again. Some of the hair oils are based on aloe which cools down the heat in the scalp which comes from very hot toxins coming through the pores which can disrupt the hair growth as well. 
There are four types of toxins, ama, ama visha, gara visha and electromagnetic toxins. Ama visha is made inside the body when the food doesn’t digest well either because digestion is poor and/or the food is too heavy (think peanut butter, almond butter, tofu, hard cheeses, and cold dairy products, red meat, etc). If the food doesn’t combust properly in the gut it remains stuck there, never absorbing into the blood stream, just rotting and fermenting, forming an acid toxin called ama visha.
If you have taken way too many pharmaceuticals, like antibiotics, birth control pills or immunizations, these types of toxins coming from outside the body are called gara visha.
Both ama visha and gara visha are very hot toxins, which can burn the hair follicle on their way out of the body, so our aloe hair oils cool this heat down, preventing the itchy and flaky scalp that accompanies these hot toxins as they ooze through the pores.
Remember — your skin is the largest organ in the body, and it’s an organ of elimination, which means it’s dumping out toxins all day long through the pores. And that includes the skin on the scalp as well. Normally you don’t see or feel the toxins as they come out, but if there is a lot of ama visha or gara visha there, they will burn the follicle or the skin on their way out, causing all kinds of skin and scalp conditions, and of course, falling hair. 
Vaidya Mishra put Bhringraj in all the hair formulas – it is one of the most famous herbs for regrowing hair in Ayurveda. He also put herbs to nourish the bones as well as herbs to calm down the Vata so that we could address all the underlying causes of hair and bone loss.
I hope this information helps you realize that there are other ways which can regrow hair besides taking pharmaceuticals or receiving steroid injections to the scalp, which even the doctors have admitted don’t really work. These injections are especially scary for little children to receive, plus giving them a phobia of doctors after their many painful injections. One of my patients got up enough courage to ask her dermatologist to be honest with her and asked if she had ever seen steroid injections work to regrow hair, and the reply was that “honestly, no, the doctor has never seen them work”!
So you might as well try to find an approach that is more holistic, one which will treat all the underlying causes of the problem, and not just trying to force the hair to grow back while ignoring the other areas of the body that are crying out for help.

What’s Diwali Got To Do with Dharma?! and more! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Nov 4, 2021 – #43, Vol 11

What’s Diwali got to do with Dharma?
Diwali – or deepawali – also known as the “festival of lights” is primarily known as a Hindu festival where the practice of lighting countless lamps into the night symbolizes “victory of light over darkness”… Wonderful as this characterization may be, it also erases the historical and cultural significance and normalizes it so that heads-of-state can send out banal wishes without risking being politically incorrect! It’s good to be reminded of what diwali really celebrates… 
This 5 day festival that is marked 20 days after Navaratri – the 9 nights of Shakti culminating in the 10th day of victory or Vijayadasmi – is really the celebration of the return of Sri Ram, his consort, Sita, and brother Lakshman, along with Hanuman, back to Ayodhya after a period of 14 years spent in exile. When the party flew back home on the “pushpaka vimaan” – the “airplane” that belonged to Raavan’s brother, Kuber, all the city of Ayodha lit countless oil lamps to welcome their awaited king and queen back from their tribulations. 

The victory celebrates not only the return of Sri Ram to his rightful throne, but inaugurates a period of great dharmic righteous living, since Sri Ram had spent 14 years battling and vanquishing asuras and demons. In particular, the most powerful of them all, the 10-headed egotistic ruler of the 3 worlds, Raavan. This victory is commemorated as dussehra – that is: “killer of the 10 heads.” With his return to Ayodhya, Sri Ram re-establishes the rule of dharma with his victory over Raavan as narrated in Valmiki’s Ramayana.
While it can be read in so many ways, the story of Sri Ram is the story of sticking to one’s dharma first and foremost. Dharma does not mean you will live in comfort and happiness following your desires. It means you will do what you know is meant for you to do as your duty – whether you like it or not! Sri Ram went into the forest, exiled, even though his coronation was meant for that exact same morning. He was stripped of his royal garb and title, and put on the hermit’s shirt and wondered in the jungles barefoot, as a mere mortal. He upheld his dharma. When we uphold our dharma, then the whole universe conspires to bring us more than what our hearts and minds can desire. Vaidya Mishra used to remind us: when you do what you know is right, you will only desire what you deserve…

After the battle between good and evil personified by Sri Ram and Ravaan, the story of the churning of the cosmic ocean of milk, the “samudra manthan” puranic story, we also become victorious, and Laxmi appears in our own lives, as well as Dhanvantari, and many other wondrous gifts as well. 
This diwali, may we all aspire to find and live in accordance with our dharma – no matter how hard the path seems at first. For those of us who are at a loss and who do not know how to find their dharma: allow your dharma to find you. Be still, so you can hear. It beckons…Jai SiyaRam!

Why do we need “friendly” bacteria? And what is their role in our bodies? Science is catching up to learn what Ayurveda has known since time immemorial, namely that friendly bacteria are the micro-organisms that not only our body thrives on, but without which we would be gravely ill. Vaidya Mishra taught that “yoginis” or friendly bacteria are necessary for the reception and delivery of pranic Energy from food and drinks, for the digestion and absorption of minerals, for the production of ojas, and so much more…. thank you Vaidya Mishra for this precious SVA knowledge…

Candida albicans is a common yeast which actually lives in harmony with us in small amounts in our GI tract, the mouth and the vagina. Our friendly bacteria found in these places prevent it from over-growing, however, if these friendly bacteria become depleted, then candida can start to multiply as much as it wants since its surveillance team is missing.
Medications such as antibiotics, steroids, birth control pills and immunizations destroy this delicate friendly bacteria leaving you prone to an overgrowth of yeast, which can cause itching, burning, swelling, fatigue, cravings for sugar, brain fog and bloating. Not only that, once the yeast fills up in the gut it can migrate out of the gut, causing little perforations on its way out, known as leaky gut, which predisposes you to food allergies as the immune system launches its attacks on the food which has leaked out.
Modern medicine responds to yeast overgrowth by giving antifungal medications and creams, such as Monistat, Nystatin, and fluconazole. Some doctors have been known to treat yeast infections using antibiotics, which never sounded right to me since taking antibiotics is what caused it to overgrow in the first place since antibiotics kill the friendly bacteria while attacking the pathogens, resulting in yeast overgrowth. 
Holistic doctors use more natural sounding remedies which don’t require prescriptions — such as grapefruit seed extract. It was found that fungus cannot grow on grapefruit seeds so this has been used since the 1980’s to treat yeast. Also used are garlic capsules, turmeric capsules, pau d’arco tea, and selenium, to name a few.
It turns out that both approaches, the modern medical model and the holistic model killed the yeast…and then it promptly grew back.
Then finally, in 1986 a book came out which described once and for all how to treat yeast by starving it to death by avoiding foods that it likes to eat. The only problem is that just about all foods can feed yeast, so the patient was left without too many foods to eat and in the end began starving themselves to death along with their yeast. And in the process of avoiding most foods known to mankind in order to get rid of their infections, they become quite neurotic about their diet, since just about everything they ate caused the yeast symptoms to return.
And the worst part of it all is that after two years of starving the yeast to death, the yeast was still thriving. 
I had been trying to treat yeast for the first eight years of my practice and was not having much success, and then I was very fortunate to attend a lecture in which a doctor came from Europe to show us why we were having no success in our various approaches to treating yeast. He took a drop of blood from a patient who had yeast overgrowth and put it into a very expensive microscope where he could project the image onto a screen where we could see the yeast swimming around happily in the person’s blood.
The patient was then instructed to take a probiotic, and then we examined his blood again. And…nothing happened. The yeast was as happy as ever swimming around undisturbed by the probiotic.
This was repeated over and over again on dozens of patients who had yeast in their blood using several probiotic companies, all to no avail. Nothing seemed to touch the resistant yeast.
And then suddenly, a person was instructed to take a probiotic from a company called Natren. I remember gasping as I saw on the screen how the probiotic attacked the yeast, like on a battlefield, totally breaking it apart, creating incredible explosions going on right before my eyes. The whole room was filled with doctors who were totally astounded by this. 
I couldn’t wait to get back to my busy practice on Monday morning to order this amazing probiotic and start it right away on my weary patients who had been diligently taking their garlic pills, grapefruit seed extract, turmeric capsules, and selenium to no avail, and who were pounds lighter from their starvation diets. 
I contacted Natren and they told me that the owner of the company was a microbiologist who took the culture over from Russia, but also figured out how to protect the culture without destroying it during the manufacturing process.
I was told that most probiotics do in fact start out with a high amount of active probiotic culture but that many of the cultures die during its processing, leaving behind a very ineffective probiotic. They also told me that unless the probiotic states on the bottle “100% potency guaranteed” then it probably had mostly dead cultures.
I got up enough courage to have the patients discontinue all their yeast overgrowth remedies and yeast starvation diets and just used the probiotic. And to my surprise the yeast died off in most of the cases within two months, this after trying to kill it for two years. And it hardly ever came back.
But of course there were always a few who still were not helped enough by the probiotic. And luckily, it was around that time that I started studying with my Ayurvedic mentor and teacher, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra. He was happy to see that I had already figured out that trying to kill the yeast and/or starve it to death did not work, but instead had shifted my approach to regrowing the friendly bacteria and let that do its job in mopping up the yeast. 
He told me that it’s not always the best approach to try to kill infection in the gut because when you do you will always kill more friendly bacteria in the process. The better approach, he told me, was to create conditions where the bad guys, the pathogens, leave town.
So he proceeded to develop two other remedies, one which acts like a fertilizer to help the friendly bacteria to grow, and the other which is like adding new topsoil into the garden, both of which would allow the seeds, the probiotics to grow. 
And once the probiotic cultures regrew back into the gut: it was like a miracle in that the yeast finally died off once and for all without going through all the difficulties of taking all the remedies to kill it and starve it to death.
And from then on yeast overgrowth has been easy for me to tackle in our patients. 
So Vaidya Mishra was right: we never needed to try to kill the yeast, whether with prescription drugs or natural remedies. Instead, we just had to create an “unfriendly” environment where it would not be able to survive, let alone thrive. In practical terms, we had to heal the lining of the gut so the probiotics would have good conditions to grow, and then leave it up to the friendly bacteria to destroy the pesky yeast. 
And one other thing Vaidya Mishra taught me was that if you just take a round or two of an antibiotic or maybe one immunization or a short round of steroids, it will kill the friendly bacteria in the gut, which then will need probiotics to replace them. But if you take several rounds of antibiotics, or stay on birth control pills for several months or even years, or receive several immunizations and/or steroids, then the repeated doses of these medications not only destroy the friendly bacteria, but also the mucus layer that they are growing in, which is what led him to develop the two other remedies to help heal the lining of the gut.
That’s why sometimes just taking a probiotic might not be enough. This is why some remedies such as slippery elm, marshmallow root and deglycyrrhized licorice might be necessary to regrow the mucus layer in the gut where the friendly bacteria grow. Otherwise the friendly bacteria might not be able to grow effectively, kind of like trying to plant seeds in sandy soil: you may get a little growth, but not robust enough to ward off the yeast.
Then there are prebiotics, which are a type of non digestible fiber that act as a food source for the beneficial bacteria. Because these prebiotic fibers are not digested, they remain in the digestive tract where they can feed the probiotics. Artichokes, chicory root, and pectin are some good prebiotic foods. Pectin is found in the stewed apple we recommend every morning: peel the apple, chop it into fours, add 2 whole cloves and cover it with water in a little pot. Let it cook until soft, discard the cloves and eat before breakfast.
Another source of fiber which encourages the growth of the friendly bacteria is sweet Thai tamarind. Don’t get the fermented tamarind paste available in Indian markets, but learn how to cook with the actual tamarind pods for best prebiotic support.
Keep in mind that the vaginal tract and bladder can also lose their friendly bacteria, resulting in bacterial vaginosis, yeast overgrowth and UTI’s. You can find specific probiotics for the vaginal tract and bladder in most health food stores. 
D-mannose is a fiber which can act like a prebiotic to enhance the growth of friendly bacteria in the bladder, and taken along with cranberry juice can discourage the overgrowth of pathogens in the bladder which would otherwise cause UTI’s.
So now, when I take on a patient with yeast I know that it is a fairly easy problem to overcome if you get a good case history. You have to see how long they were on the offending medications which destroy the friendly bacteria to help figure out if they just need some probiotics or if they need extra help regrowing the mucus layer and some prebiotics to guarantee a nice thick turf of friendly bacteria in all the mucus membranes of the gut, bladder and vagina. 
And the patients are so grateful to finally overcome their nagging yeast infections which they have been plagued with for months and sometimes even years.
I hope this information will help prevent you from having to take so many remedies which won’t help anyway and lead you away from following a diet which will deplete both you and your yeast at the same time.

After many years of practicing and studying Ayurveda and Vedic Sciences (since 1977) and spending literally thousands of hours in deep silent meditation, I want to pass on the lifelong benefits that my teachers, Vaidya Mishra and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi have given to me before it’s too late. The study and practice of Ayurveda has been like a lifelong best friend, supporting me and giving me a stable framework no matter what is happening in my environment and internal life. I feel now is a perfect time to share this ancient wisdom because there is so much uncertainty in the world these days – politically, environmentally and with worldwide pandemics. What better time to befriend and instill an ancient knowledge to prevent illness, develop an enlightened consciousness, and at the same time be able to better help our family, friends, and the community.

Protein Paddies with Garcinia Chutney for Autumn? and more! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Oct 21, 2021 – #41, Vol 11

In Autumn, have you noticed that your digestion can be off? That you are likely to experience “vishmagni” – sometimes high sometimes low agni or appetite? In other terms, you may feel hungry but then you take a bite and you lose your appetite; or conversely, you have not eaten all day and you know you should feel hungry and yet you don’t! This can be caused by many factors, but at the end of Summer and beginning of Autumn, this can be a common situation. If you don’t correct it, it can result in additional imbalances, weight gain, mood swings, and other conditions. And no, it is not possible to correct this through fasting! Specially not in Autumn. While fasting may be recommended for specific body types under specific conditions, fasting in the Fall is the last thing you should do, as your vata will get further imbalanced making you feel tired, spacy, foggy, give you dry skin and dry mouth, lack of sleep, etc. There are full protocols for helping with “vishmagni,” however, there are simple easy things you can also do. First off: don’t skip or delay meals. NO MATTER WHAT. Eat nourishing light meals in the following manner:
1) Wake up with sunrise and stew and apple/pear with 2 cloves.
2) One and a half hour later – around 8:30am, have some cooked grains – oats, millet, amaranth, etc. Cook with a cardamom pod or Madhur Masala.
3) Around 10:30am, if you are hungry, have 5-8 soaked almonds or some soaked walnuts, or a pear;
4) Lunch between 12-1:30pm will be ideal – 1 protein, 2 vegetables, a side of grains, and a chutney or salsa;
5) 3-4pm: have a fruit or a handful of soaked nuts with raisins, or a date;
6) 7-8pm: dinner consisting of a light protein with one vegetable and some grain on the side;
7) warm calming tea or milk – around 9am before bed.
A regular nourishing dietary routine like this is your best bet for keeping vata dosha in check and your digestive fire on in the Fall. However, there are other things you can also do. In terms of diet.
There are many specific fruits and vegetables that Ayurveda recommends for this season to pacify vata, but none stands out as much as Garcinia indica. Also known as Garcinia cambogia (“vrikshamla” in Sanskrit) is mentioned in the ayurvedic “nighantu”-s (or glossaries) as a vata and kapha dosha pacifying dravya or food ingredient. When we consume it with vegetables (zucchini, leafy greens, etc) and grains (rice, millet, etc) , it also pacifies pitta dosha. It is known to enhance absorption of nutrients due to its thermogenic potency; to sharpen the taste buds, clears away ama or toxic build-up in the oral cavity; and makes body lighter because it carries the following 3 rasa-s or tastes: amla (sour), katu (pungent) and kashai (astringent). These 3 rasa-s enhance metabolism in general. More specifically, the amla rasa or sour taste also enhances and supports protein metabolism because it enhances agni in the mamsa dhatu or muscle tissue. In addition, the 3 rasa-s together help clear and unclog the channels too.
Garcinia’s first property is “amla” or sour, and we know that the sour taste is “agneya” or thermogenic. Due to this property, it pacifies kapha in all the 7 “dhatu”-s or tissues. But it also pacifies thirst because it pacifies vata in the stomach, samana vata, as well as in the chest or udana vata. In general, it is a wonderful fruit that balances the entire stomach and all the dosha-s in the stomach, enhancing coordination amongst them all: samana vata, pachak pitta, and kledak kapha – the 3 principles which support digestion: a) movement of space and air in the stomach; b) enzymatic levels; c) lubrication levels. When the stomach dosha-s are balanced, so many aspects of overall health also follow suit.
Vaidya’s SVA lineage always recommends that nutritional items be consumed as food, not as capsules with active ingredients isolated – for example consume turmeric as part of your meal, not as a capsule. And the same applies to Garcinia. To achieve the purpose of optimal health or even just weight loss, you need to have a total program including diet and lifestyle.
In this spirit, here are some delicious protein paddies made with Garcinia Chutney or masala/spice mix. Protein is necessary for overall health, yet can be hard to digest. Even if it is paneer or lentil protein. Garcinia helps break down the molecules and enhances their absorption, thus pacifying all 3 doshas. Plus it tastes a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!! Enjoy!

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced. The word osteoporosis literally means “porous bone.” It is a disease where the body either loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both.The incidence of osteoporosis is extremely high, affecting over 200 million women. It affects about 1 out of10 women aged 60, 1 out of 5 of women aged 70, 2 out of 5 of women aged 80 and 2 out of 3 of women aged 90. 
First, we must think of the bone as a living tissue. It isn’t static as we might think, but instead the bone is in a constant state of flux and is continually being remodeled where the body is continually replacing old bone with new bone. As we go through the day we may form tiny micro-fractures in the bone. But there are different types of bone cells which aid in this repair process.

The first type of bone cell is called an osteoclast, from the Greek words for “bone” and “broken.”
This type of bone cell breaks down the bone, disassembling and digesting the protein and mineral of the bone at a molecular level in a process known as bone resorption.
The second type of bone cell is the osteoblast, from the Greek “bone” and germinate.” The osteoblasts synthesize special proteins and collagen in the areas recently broken down by the osteoclasts which will eventually become strong mineralized bone. Thus, these special bone cells build up the bone cells.
There has to be a balance between the amount of bone being broken down by the osteoclasts and the new bone formation created by the osteoblasts. If the bone breaks down more quickly than it is formed, from increased resorption, decreased formation or a combination of the two, then osteoporosis will result.
At any one moment 2-5 percent of your skeleton is being remodeled. At any point in time there are millions of these tiny areas of bone undergoing active repair in your body. The osteoclastic resorption phase of remodeling lasts for 3-5 weeks and the osteoblastic bone formation and remineralization phase takes another 3-5 months to complete.
common causes of osteoporosis 
Chronic low-level inflammation is one of the primary causes, at a very deep level, of bone loss. The body responds with acute inflammation if there is an injury or an infection, but when this inflammatory response continues on for months or even years, instead of being reparative, the immune system becomes unbalanced and can become destructive to the body.
Factors which cause inflammation could be from lack of friendly bacteria in the gut, allowing for chronic gut infections to grow, such as candida albicans yeast, small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO), parasites and bacterial overgrowth in the large intestines. These friendly bacteria can become depleted through the use of numerous pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, steroids, acid reflux medicines, birth control pills and immunizations. Once the friendly bacteria is depleted, chronic infection can occur, and along with it, chronic inflammation, since inflammation is the byproduct of the immune system attacking the infective agents.

Another cause of chronic inflammation comes from overheating of the liver. Nowadays, with the 80,000 environmental toxins combined with dietary toxins create a massive amount of toxicity in the liver causing it to overheat as these hot acidic toxins are filtered through it every minute of the day and night. The liver also converts the blood plasma to blood which causes the blood to overheat as well, which actually means that the heat in the liver spills out into the entire body as the liver heats up the blood as it undergoes this transformation, and now the heat is dispensed throughout the entire body, leading also to chronic inflammation.
Now the blood becomes too acidic and hot, causing the bones to give up their calcium to alkalinize the blood.
And here’s another very important (and often overlooked) factor contributing to osteoporosis: keep in mind that the osteoblasts and osteoclasts are made in the bone marrow. Nowadays many of the environmental toxins (such as air pollution and pesticides) and pharmaceuticals (such as the toxins in the immunizations and many other medications) settle in the bone marrow.
So here’s where the problem lies: when there is either chronic inflammation or toxins in the bone marrow, the stem cells in the bone marrow mistakenly start to make more osteoclasts, the bone cells which break down the bones which results in too much bone loss and not enough bone growth.
Another cause of osteoporosis can be from oxidation of fats in the blood. These oxidized fats come from cooking with refined vegetable oils, and these types of toxic fats that form when you heat these dangerous oils divert the stem cells away from osteoblast formation and toward fat cell formation. The ancient doctors of Ayurveda cognized this issue as well, as they stated in their text books that each of the 7 tissues (blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and reproductive fluids) transforms into the next tissue. For example the blood tissue undergoes a transformation and eventually becomes the muscle tissue. Now this is very interesting, the fat tissue transforms into the bone tissue, so the ancient texts stated that it’s important to have good quality fat in order to form strong bones. Oxidized fats sitting in the fat tissue form a poor quality fat tissue giving rise to poor quality bone tissue.
Some other causes of osteoporosis
Hormonal imbalances: 
Both low estrogen and thyroid problems contribute to bone loss
High Vata can emaciate the bones. Vata is aggravated by rushing through the day, eating a diet low in fats or milk, going to bed late and high stress.
Inactivity, on the other hand, can also deplete the bones. When you exercise regularly, your bone adapts by building more bone and becoming denser.
Smoking reduces the blood supply to the bones and the nicotine in cigarettes slow up the production of the bone-producing cells or the osteoblasts. Smoking also decreases the body’s absorption of calcium.
Insufficient Intake of milk and/or poor quality of milk: milk is the number one best food for the bones, but it has to be taken in the correct way. And we want the full fat milk since the fat in the milk delivers the calcium into the bones. Drinking low fat milk will not help to nourish the bones enough. 
Low levels of Vitamin D: Most of us don’t get out in the sun enough or we live in areas with lack of sunlight for a large part of the year. Vitamin D helps the absorption of calcium into the bones.
Poor quality fats in the diet cause weak bones while a diet with good fats, such as ghee, olive oil, whole milk, yogurt, soft curd cheeses, avocados, nuts and seeds will form very strong bones.
Excessive alcohol intake can slow bone formation and speed up bone breakdown.
Coffee — the acids in coffee also contribute to bone loss as the bones have to give up their calcium to keep the blood alkaline
Sodas – the phosphoric acid in the sodas interferes with calcium absorption and results in the loss of calcium from the bone.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT AND/OR TREAT OSTEOPOROSIS?
The standard medical treatment years ago was to give hormone replacement therapy, known as HRT. But this type of therapy was largely discontinued after a major 15-year research program, the Women’s Health Initiative, demonstrated that the HRT caused an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, breast cancer and colorectal cancer. 
Now the most common form of bone medication is known as bisphosphonates. These medicines poison the osteoclasts, allowing unnatural bone formation as the osteoblasts build up the bone out of balance with what nature intended causing brittle bones which tend to snap and break easily, even the larger bones in the body, such as the femur, and has also been found to cause necrosis (death of the bone cells) in the jaw bone.
In Ayurveda we give herbal remedies and formulations which help the body make its own estrogen and progesterone and don’t have the serious side effects of the synthetically made hormone replacement therapy.
The first thing most people think when they hear they have osteoporosis is to take a calcium supplement. Even without microscopes the ancient doctors knew that the calcium molecule was very large and couldn’t be absorbed into the bones. So they recommended burning the calcium (usually from coral, snail shells and pearls) repeatedly for several weeks, causing the calcium molecule to become smaller and smaller with each incineration. The end product is called a bhasma of the calcium and is actually a very tiny nanoparticle which can be absorbed easily into the bone. Research has shown that most of the calcium products on the market are in fact too large for absorption, never reaching the bone tissue and instead getting stuck in the arteries, causing hardening of the arteries and plaque formation. That’s why taking calcium supplements never seems to help bone formation.
I remember when my teacher Vaidya Mishra used to take the pulses of people who were taking standard calcium supplements he would turn to me and say: “In every patient who takes calcium supplements I can feel the calcium stuck in the arteries, clogging them, and not getting to where they are needed in the bone.” And sure enough research has now demonstrated this.
Many people are deficient in magnesium since it gets depleted when you are under stress, and all pharmaceuticals flush magnesium out of our bodies. In my practice we give transdermal magnesium therapies through the use of transdermal magnesium creams and abhyanga oils made with magnesium which are used for full body oil massage. The skin absorbs the exact amount of magnesium which is needed. Many times when you take magnesium orally it goes through the digestive tract too quickly and can cause diarrhea, preventing its absorption.
We also recommend getting Vitamin D mainly through sunshine and also through transdermal use topically on the skin. Keep in mind that the darker the skin, the more sunlight you need to make Vitamin D, as the pigment in the skin acts like a sunscreen. So a fair-skinned person might get by with about 15 minutes of sunlight a day, while a dark-skinned person might need about a half hour.
We have a special herb from India known as Asthi Shrinkala (asthi in Sanskrit means “bone”) and the best news of all is that we have herbs and foods which can clean the bone marrow, allowing normal formation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. One common mistake is when we take these powerful herbs on their own in tea/hot water. Vaidya Mishra always taught us to create herbal synergies: herbs work together to support each others’ energy so you actually receive the benefit you are seeking. Asthi Shrinkala – Bone Herb – is a very heating herb. When consumed alone, it can aggravate pita and can thus have counter results. Here is a gentle yet powerful recipe from Vaidya Mishra.
We recommend use of good quality grass-fed non-homogenized whole milk, taken in the correct way, which means boiled for best absorption into the cells and taken either with grains or by itself. Goat’s milk can be taken if someone is allergic to cow’s milk and home-made almond or macadamia nut milk and oat milk are also good substitutes.
Toasted and ground sesame seeds are also very nourishing to the bones and can be sprinkled on foods.
Vitamin K2 keeps calcium away from the arteries and joints and directs it into the teeth and bones. Vitamin K2 is extremely rare in the diet, but it is found in ghee, or clarified butter, so don’t be afraid to use it in your diet as it won’t clog your arteries and it is a very high quality fat which will in turn creates high quality bone tissue. We don’t want to take the synthetically made Vitamin K2 as it may cause side effects. 
And, as usual, the ancient doctors were correct when they stated that any disease process could be traced back to faulty digestion. This is definitely the case with osteoporosis. The inflammation and infection we see nowadays is caused a lot by problems with the two most important areas in the body responsible for good digestion and assimilation of nutrients: the friendly bacteria in the gut and the liver.
By regrowing the friendly bacteria, cleaning and cooling the liver the chronic inflammation and infection stemming from the digestive system go down, allowing for better bone formation.
Try to exercise for at least a half hour 4 days a week to increase your bone density.
And of course, try giving up your bad habits of going to bed late, drinking alcohol, and smoking cigarettes. Limiting your intake of acidic coffee and sodas will dramatically help your bone health as you turn more towards good mineral-rich alkaline spring water taken directly from the earth.

Vata Dosha is King! SVA Community Courses; and more! – your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Sept 30, 2021 – #38, Vol 11

“Vata is the King of the doshas” – Vaidya Mishra always reminded us. Wherever it goes, pitta and kapha follow suit! As it is the most volatile – characterized by air and space, it is easy to go off-balance AND stay off-balance! If there ever were a one-and-only-one line for keeping healthy ayurvedically, it would read: keep Vata Dosha in check. But how? Here are some simple straightforward things you can adopt into your daily routine:
1) Maintain a steady rest/activity routine – do not burn the candle on both sides, take breaks every 45 minutes from intense physical/mental actifity, specially from your screen/EMF device; AND shut off all EMF devices by 7pm. Yes: 7PM! You will accomplish more in less time the next day if you get fully recharged!
2) Go to bed by 9:45pm – the quantity of sleep matters as much as WHEN you sleep… Going to bed at 2am even if you sleep for 10 hours won’t cut it! Don’t believe us? Try it out…
3) Likewise: waking up 1.5hrs before the sun (after you’ve have 7-8 hrs of sleep) will keep you healthy and grounded in soma and ready for full-on activity, and joyfully too;
4) Eat a light yet unctuous nourishing diet, warm, and fresh, at least 3 times a day, and snack another 2-3 times a day;
5) Don’t overthink things! Let it go…. Learn to trust rather than imagine worse-case scenarios! Easier said than done but intention paves the way to remedies….
6) Read/watch/discuss uplifting things – turn off your news channel! Meditate, do yoga, dance, and sing instead. You will make this world a happier place faster when YOU maintain your own bliss and balance.

“Out of all the oils fit for human consumption, ghee is the best to eat”
Charak Samhita (Sutra27:232)

How did Charak Rishi know? And why is ghee the best oil? Do we have modern scientific evidence to back up and ancient claim?
But what is Ghee?
Ghee is clarified butter that has been used in India for thousands of years. It is made from sweet (unsalted) butter, simmered over low heat until the water evaporates leaving behind the milk solids. These solids float to the top and are skimmed off or strained out leaving behind the clarified liquid fat known as ghee. Ghee is an excellent source of the fat-soluble vitamins — Vitamins A, D, E and K. It’s also loaded with many other vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fats.
Ghee helps us to absorb nutrients into our cells. Here’s how it works: Whatever food we eat can’t help us at all until the food is broken down in our digestive tract into small enough particles which can cross through a very delicate cell membrane to gain entrance into our cells. Our cell membranes separate the inside of all the cells in our bodies from the outside environment, both protecting the cell and allowing nutrients to pass into the cell and toxic substance to pass out of the cell. The cell membrane has been called the most important organelle for the cell because it is responsible for determining what goes in and out of the cells. You see, outside the cell are important nutrients that the cell needs to survive, but on the other hand there are also dangerous acids and other compounds that are toxic to the cell that must be kept out. So they have this very important job and serve as gatekeepers which allow some molecules to flow through, but not others. The cell membrane is very flexible which allows for rapidly growing and dividing cells, but at the same time it is also a formidable barrier, allowing some substances to pass through while blocking others. 
Now here’s the important thing: 
All the cell membranes in our body are made of cholesterol, which gives the membranes a consistency kind of like that of a light oil. Fat-soluble molecules can pass through the membrane so ghee actually becomes a tremendous vehicle to transport the nutrients we eat across this fatty cell wall — the ghee actually slides the nutrients right on through into the inside of the cell.
In fact, ghee works so well at delivering nutrients into the cells it is used in many Ayurvedic herbal formulas which are cooked in ghee and consumed as a paste. It’s always amazing to me how the ancient doctors knew to cook so many of the herbs into ghee formulas even before we had microscopes to figure out why ghee would deliver these important nutrients into the insides of our cells.
And, by the way, this also means that cooking with ghee in your diet will enhance the absorption of the nutrients from the foods you eat into your cells. 
Many people I see from India report to me that they no longer eat ghee because it contains cholesterol. Then they proceed to tell me they deep fry or use high heat in cooking and they cook with ground nut oil or peanut oil, mustard oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil. And then in the next breath they tell me they just had stents put in for their clogged arteries. Even though they are vegetarian and there’s nothing in their diet that would otherwise clog their arteries.
Why NOT Use Vegetable Oils?
Except for these vegetable and seed oils! When you heat them they form a plastic molecule which clogs the arteries. They also form a toxic substance which when swallowed, damages the liver, giving rise to diabetes, and India has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world.
When you heat oils to a high temperature they oxidize and form very dangerous compounds. So everyone is now looking for an oil that has a high smoking point which won’t oxidize when heated to a high temperature. Which is why everyone is switching to using avocado and coconut oil. But these oils are very heavy and waxy, cold and hard to digest. Unless you live near the equator where there is more heat from the sun providing you with a stronger digestive fire, then you should not eat these oils as they are too heavy. 
Ghee, on the other hand, is the easiest oil to digest and yet has the highest smoking point – 485 degrees – amongst all other oils. 
So here’s the thing: 
Many patients are shocked to find out that when they eat ghee their cholesterol actually goes down! This happens because ghee contains high concentrations of monounsaturated Omega-3s. These beneficial fats also keep the arteries clean and prevent heart attacks. In fact, the nutrients in ghee actually prevent any sticky plaque from attaching to the walls of the arteries.
CLA, Butyric Acid, and More!
And you may have heard that ghee contains conjugated linoleic acid or CLA. CLA helps to burn fat and build muscle mass, which is why many people lose weight when they include ghee in their diets. This is also why body builders take CLA tablets, but CLA supplements do not provide the same benefits as CLA from food because they are the synthetic version made in a lab and are therefore lacking nature’s healing vibration, known as prana. Even modern medicine has proven this point: studies show that the synthetic version of CLA has a different mixture of isomers than what naturally occurs from getting the real thing from food, thus providing less of a benefit. And make sure your ghee is from grass-fed cows since this will contain higher amounts of CLA as well as other beneficial fats. 
CLA also prevents inflammation in the artery walls and hardening of the arteries, both of which can cause heart attacks.
And one of the things ghee is most famous for is that it contains butyric acid, also known as butyrate. So what is butyrate and why is it so important?
Well, it plays a huge role in the health of our gut micro biome. The gut lining is basically two layers — a mucus layer with friendly bacteria growing in it. This thick gloopy mucus layer is made by the goblet cells which are embedded in our gut wall. These goblet cells are programmed to make mucus 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It is important to have a very thick layer of mucus to prevent pathogens from going through. This is known as a mucus barrier, and it’s basically a shield that cannot be penetrated by pathogens. There are specialized friendly bacteria which make butyrate and it is this butyrate which tells our goblet cells to keep pumping out mucus. 
Unfortunately we can’t make butyrate, but instead we rely on the friendly gut bacteria to make it for us. These friendly gut bacteria use fiber to make butyrate which in turn pumps out goblet cells to make mucus. If the mucus layer gets too thinned out or dried out cracks can begin to appear where pathogens can leak through. Antibiotics deplete the both goblet cells and the friendly bacteria which can predispose the gut to infection and inflammation. 
Butyrate is found in only a few foods, and, you guessed it…one of them is ghee. It’s also found in butter and raw milk. 
The gut also consists of very tight junctions that hold together the colonocytes, which are the cells of the intestines. And butyrate works on our gut lining to keep these tight junctions intact so that large molecules of food don’t escape which could cause the immune system to attack and create food allergies, inflammation or even an autoimmune condition. Loosening of these tight junctions is known as leaky gut, which is now rampant in our society, and eating ghee in the diet is an excellent way of healing the leaky gut.
So now you can see how important butyrate is, and why eating ghee keeps the lining of the gut intact so the friendly bacteria can grow, keeps the mucus layer nice and thick, and also keeps the tight junctions intact.
As we speak there are lots of studies being done to examine the benefits of butyrate in treating inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. So fat the results look very promising.
It’s always been amazing to me how time and again, the ancient doctors predicted so many things that we’re now able to verify through modern research. Thousands of years ago they declared that women would become highly fertile and children would be very intelligent if they ate ghee. And this turned out to be true! The female hormones which make you fertile are made out of cholesterol and ghee provides this highly absorbable and nourishing form of cholesterol to crank up a women’s hormones. And the brain uses cholesterol to function, thus making our children highly intelligent.
I have helped so many women conceive babies who were infertile and were avoiding whole milk and ghee in their diets, mainly because they were told that cholesterol clogs the arteries so they were eating a low fat diet. When we switched them back to ghee and warm milk their fertility shot right back up.
Make Your Own
Now, for those of you who are not familiar with ghee you can either make it yourself from unsalted butter from grass-fed cows. Just melt the butter, let it come to a low simmer and skim off the dairy solids as they rise to the top. After about a half hour, depending on how much butter you are using, you will notice that you can see through the butter, that it becomes clear, and it makes a crackling sound. At this point you can strain it through cheesecloth into a pyrex bowl or jar and keep it at room temperature.
There is a second, more complicated way to make ghee, but this ghee has even more health benefits than regular ghee, which is already amazingly good for you. This is known as cultured ghee and is made by taking heavy cream, adding a yogurt culture to it overnight and turning it into yogurt, cooling it down for a day in the refrigerator then churning it into butter, then making ghee from that cultured butter.
This ghee is much easier to digest than regular ghee since the friendly bacteria in the yogurt cultures break the fats down into even smaller particles for better absorption into the cells. And this ghee has twice the amount of CLA than regular ghee.
You can use ghee the same way you use butter — sauté spices and vegetables with it, use it on top of vegetables and grains, and you can bake with it as well, since it can withstand the high temperatures.
I hope that you decide to incorporate ghee into your diet to keep your gut healthy, your arteries clean, to keep your weight down and to keep your brain intact into old age. It’s a shame more people don’t know about the amazing health benefits of ghee. Think of it as one of nature’s gifts to us, and probably one of the most important foods in your diet.

End-of-Summer Excessive Pitta Imbalance May be What You Got!
It’s Autumn! But don’t just jump onto the detox bandwagon yet. Just because it’s a new season. And just because everybody is doing it. If you detox without addressing pitta and amlapitta imbalances reaped through the summer, you are wont to make things worse – you will further aggravate your vata dosha and surely catch that seasonal cold that preys on the physiology this time of year. There is one key factor we tend to overlook at the end of summer, and it’s the stomach. The stomach is a primary pitta dosha site, and at the end of Summer, with the increase of agni in the environment, pitta is always found in excess in our bodies. It makes us crave more sweet juicy fruits, or ice cold drinks, cake, cold salads, ice cream, heavy foods… Did we mention ice-cream yet? And sweets, sweets, and more sweets! If you’ve read up even a little on Ayurveda at the source, not through secondary sources that tend to mistranslate, you will learn that in the Fall, we do not only get Vata aggravated because the climate changes, and colder temperatures come in, but because our pitta dosha is so high that it actually unsettles Vata dosha. And here’s the trick: if you start to pacify Vata dosha with warming and heating protocols as Vata needs to get pacified through heat, you are only going to make and already aggravated pitta go more out of balance, and hence create a vicious cycle to keep Vata out of balance. When Vata goes off all other doshas follow suit and compromise immunity. What’s more, your craving for heavy and sweet things will go out of control, and here you go, suddenly you are sick with that bad autumnal cold. Surprised? But it’s inevitable at this point…. So what do you do? Pacify pitta, or more correctly amla pitta – sour pitta. Pitta that has accumulated and reduced the pH of your body too.
By addressing and pacifying your primary pitta organ or locus, the stomach and digestive system, you can actually pave your way to a healthy Autumn and a pacified Vata that will keep things in check. But what is too much pitta? 
It can be as simple as craving too many cold and sweet things, to a feeling of heaviness in the stomach; or also the feeling that no matter what we eat, we feel hungry, never satiated. In extreme circumstances, amla-pitta appears as heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, burping, and a sour feeling in the digestive system, sometimes accompanied by diarrhea, also burning in the recto-anal area are all symptoms of “amlapitta.” Amla means sour, and pitta stands for the fiery metabolic element in our body according to Ayurveda. Amlapitta, is described to be an excess of sour gastric juices, a sure sign of an imbalanced environment in the stomach. Amlapitta can manifest in different parts of the physiology, giving different symptoms either in the stomach, the ano-rectal pathways, or even the skin, the eyes, the emotional heart.
Once in a while, we might all have experienced mild cases of amlapitta depending on what we ate, how stressed we were, how old the food was, how much ketchup we douzed it in! If stomach acidity is recurrent, it should not be ignored or taken lightly. When things become chronic, amlapitta can cause lasting damage to the stomach, throat, colon, and ano-rectal areas, including bleeding.

Acid reflux is very common with over 60 million Americans experiencing heartburn at least once a month and at least 15 million experiencing symptoms every day. Symptoms include burning pain in the chest that might worsen when you lie down. This is the most common symptom, but if you have a hoarse voice or a chronic cough, that could also be a symptom since if the throat or esophagus is burnt, the body reflexively makes mucus to lubricate it, causing a chronic cough. 
The underlying cause of acid reflux is said to be loosening of the lower esophageal sphincter, which is a band of muscle which acts as a valve that lets food into the stomach, but not back up into the esophagus. But when this valve gets weak then the stomach contents are regurgitated back into the esophagus causing heartburn.
While this may be true, let’s take a deeper look at WHY the lower esophageal sphincter might weaken. 
As usual, there is more than one underlying cause, and probably several going on at the same time in most people.
Now normally, once we swallow the food it goes from the mouth, into the esophagus, through the lower esophageal sphincter and then it enters the stomach. The stomach contains hydrochloric acid and it churns the food into a liquid acid. Once the food is liquid, it squirts through another sphincter, the pyloric sphincter, into the duodenum. The duodenum is the beginning of the small intestine. Just as a reminder, the small intestine feeds into the large intestine, then the food exits as a bowel movement at the end of the large intestine.
Once the food enters the duodenum, a signal is sent to the gall bladder to release the bile, which is an alkaline fluid which helps to not only digest the fats in the diet, but it also has the effect, since it is so alkaline, of alkalinizing the acids as they pour into the duodenum. This is important because the gut lining does not have the protective layer that the stomach has to protect itself from the acids. The bile also creates peristalsis, or little muscular contractions to move the food downwards through the gut. 
But there are many reasons why the bile might not squirt out even after receiving its signal to do so. And if it doesn’t squirt out, the acids move upwards back into the esophagus and start to burn the area. 
Now why would the bile not flow properly? 
Well, for one thing, if the thyroid gland is weak, the gall bladder gets weak at the same time. It turns out that the thyroid acupuncture meridian feeds directly into the gall bladder meridian. So if the thyroid is weak, the gall bladder automatically becomes weak. That’s why many people who have a weak thyroid gland develop acid reflux at the same time. So in this case you have to see what is causing the weak thyroid gland and address that, strengthen the thyroid and then use the herbs to fix the gall bladder. But that’s another discussion which I covered in my thyroid book, Healing the Thyroid With Ayurveda, if you want to delve into it more deeply.
Also, if the bile in the gall bladder becomes very thick, like a sludge, it might not flow properly. This could happen if you eat thick, heavy gunky goods, such as cream cheese, peanut butter or other nut butters, and it especially happens if you eat iced cold fatty foods, such as smoothies with heavy oils such as coconut oil, blended with frozen fruits, or if you eat ice cream or frozen yogurt. The cold congeals the fats, making it very hard for the bile to remain thinned out. A similar thing can happen if you eat deep fried foods or heavy red meats as these heavy fats are also hard to digest and can thicken the bile. The bile should be a thin liquid, like the consistency of olive oil, but if there are too many cold fats or heavy fats contained within the bile, you run the risk of forming a thick gunky sludge.
Another cause could be that the energy which resides in the lower intestinal region, known as Apana Vata, a downward flow of energy which pulls the food down, is moving up. Vata in our bodies controls the movements of things, such as the movement of food through the digestive tract. So if it moves up, then the food moves upwards instead of downwards, and it is this upward pressure which can over time loosen the lower esophageal sphincter, eventually causing the acids to move upwards.
In cases such as these, we have to teach the patient how to relax so that digestion can occur. All the digestive processes come to a halt if your Vata goes high from rushing through the day or going to bed late. In the West we call it “fight or flight” and in this mode the blood moves out of the digestive tract into the extremities, so you can run from the danger. The fight or flight response was made for an occasional huge stressor, but most of us are living in a constant state of fight or flight everyday as we work long hours and rush through our daily activities.
And believe it or not, there are numerous herbs which can move the energy back downwards through the digestive tract. These usually have to be given to our acid reflux patients along with herbs, foods and teas which promote the flow of bile out of the gall bladder.
I remember when I first started reading books on herbs when I was a teenager I noticed right away that on every other page of my herb books were herbs which promoted bile flow. I wondered why nature decided to give us so many herbs for bile flow. And then when I started seeing patients in my busy practice, it soon became apparent that just about every other patient had problems with the flow of bile out of the gall bladder.
And just about every case of acid reflux I saw had the gall bladder as the main cause of the problem, not too much stomach acid as we are led to believe.
Which brings me to the next point: is taking the acid reflux medicines the best mode of treatment for acid reflux? Is it safe? Is it the right way to treat this? And what are the side effects?
Well, after seeing my thousands of acid reflux patients over the years I have come to the conclusion that in some severe cases, acid reflux medicine might be necessary to alleviate more burning of the esophagus. But they should only be used temporarily, as they have too many side effects. Plus, I have also found that promoting the flow of bile out of the gall bladder, combined with healing the gut lining from the acids flowing through it, and regrowing the friendly bacteria in the gut, usually alleviates the acid reflux symptoms. So many times I have been able to help our patients avoid the acid reflux medicines in the first place, or slowly wean off them as our herbs kicked in. And yes, you must slowly wean off these medicines because if you just stop them abruptly more than likely you’ll have a rebound of acid, requiring you to go right back on them.
And are these acid reflux medicines safe? I remember when they first came out years ago, patients were told that they could only stay on them for a few weeks, as they were dangerous for the liver. But now it seems like most people are on them for extended periods of time, even years.
Also, many people are now developing bone loss as a side effect from these drugs. 
And then many people started reporting dementia as a side effect. In 2016 the first study was finally done to see if these drugs can cause dementia. At the beginning of the study 0% had dementia. But the group who were given the acid reflux medicines developed a 44% increased risk of developing dementia.
It was then further studied to see why that was, and it turns out that these medicines cross the blood brain barrier, which normally seals off the brain from chemicals. Then in May 2020 they were finally able to discover how they cause dementia. A study was published in the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Journal demonstrating how the proton pump inhibitors, the other name for the acid reflux drugs, affect the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. 
It turns out that these medications decrease the production of acetylcholine so signals can’t be sent in the brain, which predisposes you to both dementia and Alzheimer’s. 
And here’s the other very important thing: nature made it so that when we eat the food, the first place it goes is into the stomach for good reason. The stomach acids kill any bacteria that might be coming in from the food. This is very important because the small intestine, which is where the food goes after leaving the stomach, should not have much bacteria in it. It has to be fairly sterile, since this is where our food is being absorbed into our blood stream.
So now, if we take away the stomach acids by using a proton pump inhibitor or other acid reflux medicine, guess what could happen? Yes! Infection can grow in the small intestine, which is starting to happen at alarming rates now that so many millions of people are on these medicines. This is called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, otherwise known as SIBO — and is a very very difficult thing to treat.
So, it would be a better idea to first identify the underlying causes of the acid reflux, address those, promote the flow of bile out of the gall bladder, pull the apana back down, teach the patient how to get out of fight or flight and then heal the lining of the gut with mucilaginous herbs which can heal the gut lining by regrowing the thick mucus lining which should normally be found in the gut. And finally, it is important to regrow the friendly bacteria which grows within this thick mucus lining. Always remember that the gut has two basic layers — a layer of mucus with friendly bacteria growing in it, and the combination of these two give the gut a nice protective barrier, much like your front lawn has a nice thick turf of grass growing into the topsoil. If a heavy rain comes, the grass prevents the topsoil from washing away. This is a good analogy to help you visualize our gut lining of mucus and friendly bacteria protecting the gut from all kinds of invaders, such as bacteria and other pathogens.
By following the guidelines outlined here I have been able to save many people from the side effects of these drugs by getting to the root cause of their acid reflux and showing them through diet, herbs and teas, how to regrow the mucus layer back in the gut and heal both the burnt digestive tract and the gall bladder, preventing both gall bladder disease and long-term infections in the gut, such as SIBO.
