Ayurveda is the ancient timeless science that teaches us to re-align our bodies with Nature’s laws so we can achieve all the more bliss and balance as humans! Ayurveda gives us so many therapeutic protocols, recipes, and tools. One central key concept and practical tool is that of ‘langhana.’ Langhana literally means “to lighten up/make lighter.” In practical ayurvedic terms, it represents the process of adopting therapeutic protocols, such as fasting, or dieting, in view of “lightening” the body. In modern terms, detoxing it! Langhana is just one the six foundational treatment protocols in Ayurveda as per the Charak Samhita (22:4). Langhana therapy is used to help reduce excessive weight- gain or accumulation, and bring equilibrium. It also helps alleviate and balance the doshas – pitta/kapha/vata as well as any accumulated waste products, and sharpens indigestion.

Langhana therapy is highly effective and increasingly popular in management of dis-ease due to chronic stress and improper diets. However, many of us do not even have the time to do any of these protocols. That is why Vaidya Mishra gave us practical easy tools. If you have not been able to take time for yourself this Spring season, for a much-needed detox, here is what we suggest.

On the weekends, for the next three weeks, before the Summer Solstice and the official start of Summer, replace your coffee/tea with Moringa tea. For lunch eliminate/minimize carbs, starch, bread, eat more vegetables, and a good side of protein. Cook your meals with Moringa powder. For dinner, make a light vegetable soup with Moringa soup mix, etc. You get the idea. Not convinced? Scroll down to read what all Moringa can do for you! It is nothing short of a “miracle” plant, filled with so many health benefits! In fact, Vaidya Mishra absolutely loved the Moringa plant.

He called it “a divine plant,” a great gift of Mother Nature, because it carried a perfect combination of detoxifying AS WELL AS rejuvenative properties simultaneously! This makes the Moringa plant 100% balancing. But here’s the best news: not only do the ancient ayurvedic texts recommend Moringa, but the scientific community keeps publishing papers that attest to the incredible nutritional, therapeutic and prophylactic properties of this ancient divine plant.

Moringa is where ancient Ayurveda meets the latest science!

Moringa is a fast-growing drought-resistant tree native to the Indian subcontinent. It is also known as “drumstick tree.” In Sanskrit, it is nick-named “shigru” – which means fast-acting. Its leaves and fruit – the drumstick – are edible and delicious. But more than just an “exotic” vegetable, the Moringa tree is key for health, specially during seasonal detox.

Here’s what Modern science has confirmed about Moringa:

  • Regulate Blood Sugar Levels
  • Enhance Digestive Health
  • Purify/detoxify blood
  • Boosts immunity
  • Facilitate stronger bone development
  • Help prevent Respiratory Diseases
  • Boost female sexual health

Add 1-2 drops of Moringa or Maha Moringa Nectar to a bottle of 16oz of water, for gentle ongoing daily detox. You can also add nectar drops of Manjistha, Coriander, and Mahanubandha, along with the Moringa, for a full detox and rejuvenation recipe.

How is Moringa rejuvenative you say? Here is what more we know – Moringa has:

  • 7 times more Vit C than an orange
  • 3 times more potassium than a banana
  • 3 times the amount of iron found in almonds
  • 25 times more iron than in spinach
  • 4 times more calcium than in milk
  • 2 times more protein than in milk

And if this is still not enough to wow you, it has

  • 47 different antioxidants

The greater potency of vitamin C and potassium, along with calcium, protein, iron, and amino acids, help your body heal and build muscle. It’s also packed with antioxidants, substances that can protect cells from damage and boost your immune system.

All of this in just one plant!

Moringa thrives where other plants and ingredients fail. Although the plant’s many parts are used – leaves, flowers, seeds, fruit and even bark – in the Vedic tradition, the leaves and the fruit are particularly favored in cooking, for daily nourishment and detoxification, alone or with some lentils (mung or masoor preferably). SVA recommends using it daily for nourishment and detoxification because it is very effective in ridding the bone tissue of accumulated toxic waste. Since it targets the bone tissue, it is then also good for the blood and fat tissue – toxins travel through the blood, the muscle and then the fat before reaching the bone as one is built on the other. As a side-benefit, moringa also supports the detoxification of the liver. There are also some additional benefits to consuming Moringa on a regular basis:

  • It is great for eyes, skin – it detoxifies the skin and nourishes the eyes
  • It can help lower cholesterol since it supports the liver and purifies the fat tissue
  •  It can help with joint pain resulting from the local accumulation of toxins because its primary action is to detoxify tissues, particularly the fat tissue
  • Long-term use supports our immune system.

It is tridoshic – balancing for vata, pitta, and kapha – however, if you are a high pitta body type, make sure to always cook it with a pitta pacifying masala. Alternately, you can use the SVA Moringa Soup Mix which has been formulated to be balancing for all three doshas.

Enjoy Moringa in of the many formats that Vaidya Mishra made available for us: as a powder for soup; as a delicious tea blend; as concentrated nectar drops in your water; or even transdermally as a soap – see the beautiful results on your skin daily!
