Thursday October 2nd, 2025 was Vijayadashami – marking the victory of good over evil. This is an annual vedic celebration that happens on the tenth day of Navaratri. The name itself is derived from the Sanskrit words for “victory” and “tenth” – it marks the victory of the feminine cosmic energy over disruptive destructive forces. This festival also commemorates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the defeat of negative qualities and the upholding of righteousness. The festival is a conclusion to the Autumn Navaratri celebration. It marks a new beginning for all those who partake in it.

So what happens during Navaratri?

During 9 days, special vedic verses and chants are recited along with a ritual fire into which offerings are made. The vedic chants serve a purificatory purpose, but they also recount the heroic battles that the Shakti fights against a-suras – disharmonious entities – to put an end to negativity in the world.

Daily Homams were conducted with expert vedic pundits. A homam, or havan, is a sacred fire ritual that accompanies vedic recitations with offerings like ghee, herbs, and grains into the consecrated fire. These 9 days are an opportunity for all those who wish to, to attend a homam and through the ritual remove all that may be hindering their progress. In return, they receive purification and are able to grow and progress in life.

This year, the vedic chants and accompanying rituals were conducted by expert pundits here in LA. Many of you signed up and sent in donations – thank you! You will be receiving some items from the puja in the mail in a few days.

At the end of each of the 9 days as well as on the 10th day, Kumkum Archana was done to Shakti – a vedic ritual in which kumkum, a red powder made of turmeric and other sacred ayurvedic ingredients, is offered to Shakti – the cosmic feminine energy, while reciting mantras for blessings, protection, and well-being. The Kumkum Archana was offered along with the recitation of the 1000 names of the divine feminine.
