Description

This is part three of a 60 hour course on Ayurvedic herbs and spices.  This section contains over eight hours of audio lectures by Vaidya Mishra.

For a full description of this course, please view Section 1.  We recommend that you start the course from the beginning, as many terms were defined and explained in Section 1, which we will be using througout the remainder of the course.

It’s Time to Dive Deeply into the Ocean of Knowledge

Vaidya Mishra’s specialty is to go back to the original Sanskrit texts and explain word by word the practical wisdom contained there.  You will gain confidence from this this knowledge because it is not a modern teacher’s opinion or interpretation, but is rooted in the ancient shastras (or texts).  You will not find translations of the sanskrit verses, but you will learn the actual Sanskrit itself.  In this way, Vaidya Mishra connects you to the source of Ayurvedic teaching.

In this course you will learn a complete understanding of the body, the tissues, the doshas.  And you will learn how some of the most important Ayurvedic herbs and spices and vegetables affect the state of balance in the body.  With this framework of knowledge you will be able to start using the herbs and spices just as a child begins to put words together to form meaningful sentences.

The knowledge of dravya guna (pharmacopoeia) is the grammar of Ayurveda.  You must learn the qualities of each herb to be successful in creating health through Ayurveda.

What You Will Learn in This Section of the Course

In Section 1 you got an overview of what dravya (Ayurvedic materia medica) is.  You reviewed the doshas (vata, pitta, kapha), sub-doshas, dhatus (tissues) and shrotas (channels) of the body.  You learned the 20 gunas (qualities) used to describe the dravyas (herbs), as well as the rasas (tastes), viryas (potencies), vipakas (after effects), and prabhavas (special properties) used to describe the various herbs in the remainder of the course.

In Section 2 you started to look closely at the many herbs used regularly in Shaka Vansya Ayurveda.

In this section (Section 3) you will continue to explore more herbs that Vaidya Mishra uses regularly in his formulations.  Each herb will taught from the original Sanskrit texts and Vaidya Mishra will explain the meaning of each Sanskrit word and relate it to his vast experience of Ayurveda.

How to Use the Course Materials

When you download the zip file for this section of the course, you will find PDFs which Vaidya uses throughout the course while he is lecturing and MP3 audio files which contain the lectures themselves.  You can listen to the audio alone, but for the first time through (at least), we recommend that you follow along with the PDF documents to make sure that all of the concepts are clear.  The PDFs sometimes contain visual diagrams in addition to the Sanksrit verses.

We recommend reviewing, and re-listening to these files many times so that the heart begins to recognize and own the knowledge.  These MP3 files are especially good to put on your MP3 player and listen in the car.  Just as it is easy to remember songs you hear over and over on the radio, you will find that the knowledge in these lectures will stick to you with no effort when you hear them over and over.  You will also find that your understanding of the material deepens each time you hear them.
