Eat MORE Cranberries: Nutty Cranberry Muffin Recipe; your SV Ayurveda Newsletter Nov 21, 2024 – #47, Vol 14

Facebook  Twitter  Instagram  Youtube

Good news: THIS is the season when it is ok to eat whatever you crave – with one caveat! Vaidya Mishra used to say: “don’t try to eliminate your craving, as they are an indication of what your body needs.” “BUT,” he added: “if you are craving sugar, choose “good wholesome unprocessed sweets or sugar; if you are craving salty and crunchy, don’t reach out for those bagged chips and snacks laden with chemicals…”

This is why the first step is NOT to buy and have handy things you know who fall for when the craving hits! Second step is, when you have some down time or on the weekends, prep and make some snacks. Autumn is the time of year when Vata dosha goes high due to the sun’s journey southwards. As the weather cools off trapping pitta in our shrotas or physical channels, Vata gets thrown off and your alternate cravings for sweet, salty, tangy, crunchy, go off the chart! You will crave one, then the next, then that again, and then the other! Better to be prepared than regret things later when you start to feel heavy and bloated and then tired and irritable etc!

We are fortunate because Vaidya gave us lots of delicious recipes to help balance our doshas during the different seasons of the year, to help pacify our cravings, and satisfy our hunger as well.

Below is our popular “Nutty Tangy Cranberry Muffin” recipe – perfect for this time of year. Sweet, sour, crunchy and nutty, and so satisfying! And did you know how many benefits cranberries have? Let’s refresh our memory!

Did you know that cranberries are a power fruit? They are great for the eyes, cardiovascular health, and the urinary tract. Cranberry has not only been recognized as a disease-fighting fruit, it is also one of the highest ranked regularly consumed foods for antioxidant content per serving. Antioxidants protect cells from damage by oxidative stress and free radicals, damage that can lead to serious conditions like cancer and heart disease. Some of the antioxidants found in cranberries include anthocyanins, ellagic acid, quercetin, resveratrol, selenium, and vitamins A, C and E.

Cranberry Preserve (Vaidya Mishra’s proprietary recipe) with Organic Cranberries, Sweet Orange, and Organic Raw Sugar. Have it with toast or anytime of day. You can also add water and make it into a delicious drink.

The anthocyanins that is found in cranberries- the compound that gives cranberries their red color – also acts as a powerful antioxidant that may be stronger than vitamin E. Laboratory studies have shown that cranberry extract can reduce oxidation of LDL-cholesterol (so-called “bad” cholesterol), which can help maintain a healthy heart.

Cranberries also contain Proanthocyanidins – or PACs. PACs are flavonoid polyphenols found in many plants and fruits that have a number of health benefits, including:

  • Cardiovascular health: Proanthocyanidins may help protect the heart and cardiovascular system by reducing the risk of blood clots, lowering blood pressure, and working with vitamin C to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Proanthocyanidins can help fight inflammation and may protect gastric tissues from oxidative damage.
  • Antimicrobial: Proanthocyanidins can help prevent bacterial infections.
  • Anti-aging: Proanthocyanidins may have anti-aging properties.
  • Neuroprotective: Proanthocyanidins may be protective in some neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Anti-ulcer: Proanthocyanidins can help protect gastric tissues from oxidative damage, inflammatory responses, and apoptotic events associated with ulcers.
  • Intestinal health: Proanthocyanidins may help modulate intestinal dysfunction caused by diet.
  • Menopausal symptoms: Proanthocyanidins may help improve menopausal symptoms.
  • Renal function: Proanthocyanidins may help improve renal function.
  • Skin damage: Proanthocyanidins may help improve skin damage

Enjoy your Nutty Sweet and Tangy Cranberry Muffins – now that’s a good sweet treat to have this season in Vaidya Mishra’s standards!

Delicious Tridoshic Recipes

Nothing can help or cure us unless our digestive system is working optimally; reversely: nothing can ail us when our digestive system is working optimally! Ayurveda gives us beautiful details about how we can accomplish this. The details are beautiful because they restore our connection to Nature and its incredible complex detailed structures. For example: Ayurveda teaches us why it is important to Eat at certain times and fast at other times; eat specific things at specific times and avoid those same things at other times; eat with attention on the food; eat pranic food; eat foods prepared a certain way; etc – you get the idea!

In this light, Vaidya Mishra not only shared amazing recipes with us but he also taught us all those little details that make a world of a difference for more balance and bliss! The knowledge he shared with us was not only sublime and beautiful but it was also enlightening… So many would adopt new structures and routines in their diet, along with recipes, and sure enough, they would contact him back saying how not only their mind-set had shifted, but how their practice of yoga and meditation had improved tremendously AFTER they adopted SVA dietary guidelines and recipes.

Vaidya Mishra gave us so many delicious spice blends to use in the kitchen, specially the Mom’s Masala – a-ready-to-use pre-toasted blend of 20 herbs and spices that you can sprinkle on your food (no cooking needed) or even in your drinks (lime water, lassi, etc) or on top of fruit. If you have not tried them all out, you can order our rosewood sampler box to get a taste of each one.

Yakrit

Your Body’s Dynamic Powerhouse

Yakrit, the Sanskrit term for the ‘liver,’ literally means ‘where every process happens.’ The liver – the largest organ in our bodies – carries out hundreds of actions, primarily detoxifying and creating new blood; filtering out toxins/chemicals; building immunity. But did you know that it also has an amazing capacity to regenerate itself? Without the liver we wouldn’t be able to transform food into energy, by breaking down fats and proteins. Here are some of the liver’s most vital functions:

  • Produces fresh blood AND cleans toxins out of the blood: the many cells of the liver, known as hepatocytes, accept and filter this blood. They act as little sorting centers, determining which nutrients should be processed, what should be stored, what should be eliminated via the stool, what should go back to the blood; it also gets rid of old red blood cells; the liver thus regulates/maintains healthy amount of blood in the body;
  • Produces bile, a fluid that helps the body digest (break down) fat: the liver stores fat-soluble vitamins as well as minerals such as copper and iron, releasing them when the body needs them. It also helps to break down fats in a person’s diet: it either metabolizes fats or releases them as energy. The liver produces an estimated 800 to 1000 ml of bile each day. This bile flows into the small intestine where the fat gets broken down and absorbed – extra bile is stored in the gallbladder.

As if these functions weren’t enough, the liver also plays a major role in the following:

  • Metabolizes proteins and carbohydrates so they turn into energy and your body can use them;
  • Creates immune system factors that help fight against infection;
  • Create proteins responsible for blood clotting – otherwise we would bleed to death!
  • Breaks down old and damaged red blood cell;
  • Balances energy metabolism by converting glycogen to glucose and storing extra glucose by converting it to glycogen. Glycogen is a form of glucose that your body stores mainly in your liver and muscles. Your body needs carbohydrates from the food you eat to form glucose and glycogen.
  • Makes toxins less harmful to the body and removes them/detoxifies the bloodstream

So you can see how and when, for any reason, the “intelligence” of the liver gets compromised, different kinds of dis-ease may emerge. A compromised liver can mean compromised health on many levels…

In Shaka Vanshiya Ayurveda, we pay special attention to making sure the liver does not get “cranky” – as Vaidya Mishra would jokingly explain. Having taken the pulse of thousands of people who had “cranky hot livers,” he put together a gentle yet effective protocol to help cool things off and optimize its functions.
